We hired Platt to complete a major home remodel - they built a staircase, replaced all doors, flooring, exterior siding work, and a roof. The experience was one of the worst we have had with a contractor, and this is our third home and third major renovation. From the start of the project we had concerns. The project manager made clear to us that he was unhappy at Platt and it showed. He was often late and failed to respond in a timely way. We later learned that he was applying to other jobs and left Platt right after our job was complete. The workers sent by Platt to our home seemed unskilled. Nearly ever part of the work had to be redone - both minor (floors with large gaps, poor carpentry, painting issues), and major (roofing, water issues). We found significant safety issues with some of the work completed. Platt installed a metal cap on our clay lined chimney resulting in significant water leakage and potential carbon monoxide blockage and mold. When we raised this issue with Platt, instead of fixing it, they hired a law firm. It seems they have a pattern of failing to fix issues and instead using lawyers instead. Eventually they paid for some repairs to the chimney but only after we started to take legal action. We still have ongoing disputes with Platt about water leaking in another room, which we believe is due to how they applied the roofing materials, and poorly painted balusters. Instead of working with us, Platt again hired a law firm (curiously, they now have a new law firm). It's clear to us that Platt has become too big in recent years, and can't keep up the good work they might have done in the past. We've since used other contractors in the area who are excellent.

Response from PLATT BUILDERS
Thank you for your review. I, like any business owner, love A+ reviews but your project and your review will have a greater positive impact on Platt Builders than any A+ reviews we have received. As you and I have discussed in the past, I am sorry that my team caused you consternation during the project. This is why, when we met 2+ years ago to close out your project, we opted to address all the things that you asked for and also remunerated you for your feelings about the unsatisfactory process. When you called this year, you and I discussed at length that your current issue is not derivative of our work. I explained the building science and showed you photos of our work; our warranty does not cover every issue that may arise with your home. I am aware that your disappointment with the project back in 2018 would lead you to think this was our fault, but it is not. I’m saddened to see that you have followed through on your threat to use your legal training to paint a one-sided picture in social media. We are a company of people, fallible because we are human, and on a few occasions over our 30-year history have fallen short of delivering the excellence that we strive for on every project. Again, I wish you and Rachel good wishes with future remodeling. Halsey Platt, President

There was a bit of back and forth during the quoting process and leading up until the time when the work got scheduled. Once they picked a date they showed up and did the work in a highly professional and efficient manner. This roof was the second one they did for me. The first roof was larger and more involved and that work was done in the same manner. We are now looking to do some inside work and will ask them to bid on the project.

We worked with them from November until May. They are very good and if you look around for them they have a phenomenal reputation. They do a lot of high-end home stuff but you pay for it. If you want really nice design work and high quality contractors and materials you will get them from Platt. They also provide good job supervision and excellent estimates. You will then pay 20 or 30-percent more than other vendors for that service.
Description of Work: I used Platt Builders for a full kitchen and bath remodel. They did a complete tear-out of the master bath and kitchen.

They were outstanding. It was a major project. They started the work in August 2008 and finished in about August 2009. The price was good. They were responsive, punctual, and professional.
Description of Work: Platt Builders of Groton did a huge year long project on our house. They demolished an addition that had been put on the house in the 70s and then they dug a full basement and made a new kitchen, a family room, a new master bedroom with bathroom, another new bedroom with bathroom, a new laundry room, all new windows, and all new heating. We added central air.

This was our first home and first renovation. It could not have gone better. Platt Builders gave us confidence in our vision and the result was better than we imagined. They have a complete staff that helped with things we initially thought we wouldn't need. We thought we knew just what we wanted. But their experienced staff showed us options we hadn't considered that turned out to be perfect and unique solutions for our home and how we live. I also appreciated their desire to preserve and restore rather than simply replace something. Halsey Platt, the president of the company, is truly wonderful to work with. He has incredible design instincts in addition to a commitment to quality. His crew were also very easy and friendly to work with. We did some of the minor work ourself and the Platt crew was always willing to share suggestions and advice.
Description of Work: We did a major renovation to an old (1926) neglected home. We worked with Platt Builders to address major issues (structural, water and termite damage, new windows, doors, insulation, new ceiling, repair old plaster, custom designed, built and installed new kitchen and new bathroom) as well as improving the design by adding built-ins and other architectural enhancements.
