PV Squared Solar (Pioneer Valley Photovoltaics)

Solar Panels, Electrical, Roofing

About us

Since 2002, PV Squared has provided renewable energy solutions to homeowners and businesses in the Pioneer Valley and the surrounding regions. We’ve grown from a four-person company to more than ten times that size today. As a worker-owned cooperative, we’re invested in the happiness of our clients, the livelihoods of our workers and the health of our community. This is an important milestone for us as two of our core goals are to create sustainable, living-wage jobs and to strengthen our local economy. We work hard to deliver projects that go above and beyond, not just in terms of power production and finances, but also in terms of thoughtfulness and attention to detail. Our client-focused approach has built a reputation for quality and service that is second to none. We have installed PV systems for more than a thousand clients, each with unique goals and physical sites, and we utilize that experience with every new system we design and install.

I want to revise a review that I left when I was frustrated about a long delay in installing my Tesla Powerwall - I don't know if it's possible to edit a prior review. The delay was due to supply chain issues out of PV Squared's control. But I was frustrated that they didn't foresee the delay. Nevertheless, we finally obtained the necessary part with the help of my electrician - the excellent Ron Stevenson - and the project has been finished. The workmanship is excellent and the people unfailingly polite and informative. I'm giving a five to balance the one star I gave before.

The initial install went without issues other than excessive wear to my roof shingles - some companies will take measures to prevent that. Now 5 years later I want to replace the roof. Not PV2’s fault, the roof as a whole is at the end of its life. PV Squared refuses to do the deinstall/reinstall of the panels so the roofers can work, which leaves me without options. Every other company I call in the area says they provide this service (at a cost) for their customers only, which is the standard except for PV2. This leaves me with no options because I made the mistake of going with PV squared and they only care for the more profitable initial installs and not for working with existing customers.

Job went very smoothly. Two man crew was very punctual and the entire install only took 2-1/2 days. Very professional.

I contacted this company to inquire about getting assistance in setting up a photovoltaic generating system on my home. I told them I had the solar panels, and wished to work with a company that would allow me to do some of the installation, with them handling the critical aspects. The representative I spoke didn't sound opposed to working with me in this way. I understood that this approach might not have squared with their company policy, so was expecting them to say they couldn't work with me. But they took my contact information and told me they would be in touch. I never heard anything further from them.

Very professional and customer oriented eventhough I was/am at very preliminary stages of considering solar panels. Will definitely go with PV Squared if all the kinks are figured out being part of a condo - no fault on them but rather on my end.

I am impressed with all aspects of this organization. I interacted with 2 other PV outfits during the early stages of deciding if and what we would be installing, and PV-squared differed in a number of important ways. During the initial site visit, they took extra time to answer my many questions, and the design plan that was developed was very detailed. Unlike the other companies, I never felt like I was being pressured by a salesman, they were very patient in making sure that we were comfortable with our decision, and even reworked the design plan to reflect different options. I liked the fact that they only offer owner purchase rather than power leases that most PV companies push. Although having the option of leasing a system with no/little up front costs is a better option than not installing PV at all, with all the eager phone calls I was receiving from the other companies to see if I wanted to move forward with a power lease, it became obvious that owning the system is a big financial plus over the long term. I also like the fact that they are a worker owned cooperative and they've been around for a while. Many of the other PV outfits seem to disappear after a few years, and most have merged with other outfits, been purchased outright, or gone out of business. Once we decided to move forward with them, they were very efficient in completing all the permitting and rebate paperwork, and quickly installed the PV system. The thing that impressed me the most is that even when there was a problem that led to a loss in some productivity (that they inadvertently caused), they fixed the problem within 1 day of realizing it, and offered to compensate us for the lost productivity (before I had a chance to ask). This was the only thing that did not go as planned during the entire process, and they were more than willing to make it right.

Everything from the original consultation, estimate, all interactions with workers, the permitting and rebate applications was handled with cheerful expertise. We were having a major upgrade of our heating system at the same time, and (PV)2 coordinated their work effectivily with our contractor, Wright Builders of Northampton.

They have been incredibly good and I recommend them strongly to anybody. From the beginning their proposal was much more careful and better designed around our specific site. The people are wonderful to work with, and there is a full team you'll be working with - the folks who look at the site and work up the detailed proposal and cash flow estimates, the folks who work through the regulatory thicket, the project manager, the amazing installers, the guy who comes in at the end to explain everything - even the folks who do the billing are wonderful to work with. PV^2 is a worker co-op, so the workers participate in the company profits. You really feel this, as everybody you deal with has a stake in making sure your project goes well and that you're happy with it. At every point we felt like they were taking extra and unusual care. For example, they took about a day extra because our barn roof, where the panels were going, were not square and they wanted to be sure that the panel arrays looked properly lined up. This was not something that we asked for, but something they did on their own. Our system went online today, and we are now producing our own solar energy. We couldn't be happier with the work, top to bottom, that PV^2 has done.
Description of Work: PV^2 provided an initial estimate - we had got estimates from three other groups. PV^2 primary model is for you to own your solar system. Most of the other companies push leases in which they provide the money up front for the system, but then they get the federal and state credits and, more importantly, they get the profits from the SRECs (Solar Renewable Energy Credits) and in some cases the future savings on your electric bills. These look appealing at first, but if you have access to capital (eg, if you can borrow the money up front) for the proposals we saw you do much better over the long run (even factoring in the interest we pay on the loans) by owning your system. Otherwise they are making money rather than you. PV^2 was also much more careful in looking at our site and figuring out how to optimize the solar production we could get. They were able to put about 50% more solar panels into the space than the other estimates because of this, and as a result, we get enough more solar energy that the PV^2 system saved us a good bit more money in the long term, despite the significantly larger initial outlay. Once we signed on, they worked through the regulatory thicket - it takes up to 3 months to get permission from the electric company (WMECO in our case), and there are many forms to fill out for building permits, for state and federal rebates. Once those hurdles had been cleared, they did all the installation top to bottom, running underground conduits for wiring, lining up and mounting 54 solar panels, installing various required cut-offs and the main inverters (to convert the DC solar into AC that will power your house and go back into the grid), doing the interface into the electric grid, and coordinating with WMECO and with local building inspectors. It's a lot of work, and they were full-time on it with a steady crew. Once the installation was finished they worked with WMECO to get its final blessing (in a ceremony quaintly called "witnessing"), and to explain in detail everything about how it works and how we get started selling SRECs back to the grid. (This is where you actually end up making money on the solar - we expect to break even on our outlay in the 9th year of operation, even after accounting for the cost of financing.)

The installation went well. I helped, which I was ok with me. They do a good job and the Enphase inverters are great. I bought the monitoring on my own and love it. My chief unhapyness is that they said one thing and then did another.
Description of Work: PV2 installed 6 photovoltaic panels on my roof. I have two problems - they said they would install electrical conduit and used flex instead (which can't have additional wires installed) and made it sound like there would be free monitoring of the system and then tried to charge me for it.
