+ 0 moreWe had a complicated job of relining 2 flues, repairing a crown, and installing a cap. These guys did a great job. They were easy to reach for questions before the job started, and called the day of the job (a rainy and windy day) to confirm they were coming. They were very conscientious of keeping things clean and simple. When they ran into a snag with the fireplace flue, they had to break into the side of the chimney from the attic - they hit the flue dead on, broke out only the bricks they needed, ran the flue down, and did a great patch. They were very patient with my endless questions and didn't seem to mind when I was right there with them when they were doing the work. They did a nice clean job and were extremely professional and knowledgeable overall.
Description of Work: Installed 2 stainless steel flue liners, repaired cracked chimney crown, installed stainless steel chimney cap.

+ -1 moreHe called ahead, and showed up on time. He was undaunted by the mess in the second chimney and covered the rugs to avoid getting them dirty with ash, soot and honey. Given the incredible mess a beehive leaves behind, his charges were more than reasonable. He gave an estimate for a chimney cap, but didn't apply any pressure to buy one, and said the hive in the chimney was very unusual, and probably wouldn't happen again. The whole job took less than 1.5 hours. We are very satisfied.
Description of Work: 2 chimneys were swept. One we use quite a bit, the second we use infrequently. However, we had a swam of bees establish a nest in that chimney and needed the wax and honey residue cleaned. The bees were gone, but the mess remained.

+ 2 moreDuring a rainstorm water poured into my living room. I thought it was the newly installed roof but the roofer examined it and said it was the chimney. He told me exactly what he thought the problem was so I would know if the chimney repair people were honest. When I called Horizons they were friendly, prompt and knowledgeable. Without knowing what the roofer told me, Horizons gave the same evaluation. Horizons educated me on the operation and maintenace of chimneys. I highly recommend this company and refer my friends to them.

+ -1 moreThey were extremely professional and came out when we wanted them to. My only ding was that you have to pay for their estimate and they take that off when you get the work performed. Most people do free estimates. I think it is because he is a one-man guy and his time is money. It is a $70 estimate. We are going to use them again.
Description of Work: We used Horizon Chimney Services to do an inspection and they sealed the brick. We had gotten about 12 inches of rain and water was coming into our house and we wondered if we needed some pointing or something like that. They said that we didn't need pointing. They said that the bricks had gotten super saturated and the water went to the lentil. It condensed on the lentil and it was dripping a quart every 20 minutes.

But they were very booked up so I called Derek instead, who was able to come in very short notice and did a great job sweeping the chimney and installing a cap. Both Derek and Ronnie were very professional and I am quite satisfied with the experience. Will definitely call them again in the future!

+ -1 moreEverything went perfectly and just as scheduled. Both Derek and Ronnie arrived on time and finished in a couple of hours as promised. They left no sign of their having been there except the nice refinished chimney. Their work also comes with various levels of guarantee. They didn't destroy any property, they cleaned up after themselves, and they were courteous and friendly and explained everything they were going to do. They obviously care about their craft. I highly recommend them. And I will have them come back for any other work that I need including simple cleanings, etc.
Description of Work: Horizon first inspected the leaking chimney and made an estimate for repairs. They sealed the flashing with flash seal membrane, repointed bottom mortar joints, sealed cracks in various joints, re-crowned the top of chimney, and waterproofed the exterior bricks and mortar.

+ 3 moreDerek was very clear about how and why everything needed to be cleaned and repaired. He was professional, prompt, and couteous. He promptly returned all phone calls and directly answered all questions. When I had a question about my water heater temperature on the weekend he called me right away and helped me figure out what to do. He also offered to come out and help me, but it turned out the heater level was accidentally not turned back up, so all I had to do was adjust the dial. Part of the work had to be done in April, as this work actually began in late fall as it was getting too cold to do the chimney cap. We made the appt for April. When the time came he called and reminded me and he finished the work as planned. He is a pleasure to work with!
Description of Work: I had my chimney repointed, the chimney capped, the flue lined, the exterior chimney waterproofed, and the chimney cleaned. He also put in the correct size hot water heater vent and flue into the chimney.

He showed up on time, and was courteous, thorough, efficient, and did not leave any mess. In addition to the liner and cap installation, he also recommended that some masonry work be done to the chimney exterior. (He also gave us the name of a great roofer - which we NEEDED). All in all, it was a great experience and he came in hundreds of dollars lower than other estimates we received. We'd definitely use Horizon Chimney again and would recommend Derek to anyone.
Description of Work: We had a Ventinox stainless steel liner system installed, as the original terra cotta liner was deteriorating and falling apart. We also had a stainless steel chimney cap installed over all three flues.

+ 1 moreWe had a great experience. Derek and Paul were very nice and polite. They were kind enough to explain all of the various chimney terms that we did not understand. They worked quickly and were done in about an hour, cleaning the furnace flue and replacing the chimney cap in that time. They also provided us with an explanation on how best to start a fireplace fire as well as some tips on seasoning the wood from some trees we had taken down in our yard recently. We look forward to having them back for our annual cleaning and any additional maintenance.
Description of Work: Derek and Paul came out to clean our two flues (fireplace and furnace). Our fireplace was very clean and did not require cleaning so we were not charged for that flue. Our furnace flue definetly needed cleaning and Derek and Paul took care of that. The price estimate was $150 for one flue and $100 for each additional flue. We only had one flue that needed cleaning so it was only $150 for the cleaning charge. I thought it was great that we didn't get charged for the inspection of the fireplace chimney. Much appreciated and unexpected. They also examined the clay interior of the flue for wear and tear and they replaced the chimney caps with a new single unit stainless steel cap. It cost $350, but it comes with a lifetime guarantee and our 50+ year old wooden caps were quite rotted. They also provided us with a price quote on a sleeve for the furnace flue as there was a lot of clay flaked off.

He gave us a quote, then returned as scheduled to do the work with no surprises nor additional costs. He is extremely knowledgeable and explained both the problem and solution in detail. An old galvanized chase cover was replaced with a new stainless cover. This solved the problem completely.

We had been experiencing condensation in our clay lined chimney ever since we installed a high efficiency furnace in June 1999. We originally contacted Derek to diagnose our moisture problem. Derek provided us with a thoughtful and logically assessment of the cause of our moisture problem. He also provided us with a multi-step action plan to correct the moisture problem and repair the damages. The first step in his plan was to install the stainless steel liner. The estimate he provided was complete and easy to understand. The price was competitive, based on numerous estimates we received from other chimney maintenance services. Derek performed our installation in a very professional and efficient manner. He arrived at our house on schedule and completed the installation work without any delays or rework. His cleaned up the work site thoroughly after the job was completed. Finally a year later we can confirm that the chimney liner solved our moisture problem and we plan to move to step two in Derek's recommendation in 2010.
Description of Work: The owner of Horizon Chimney Services, Derek Carmichael, cleaned our stainless steel chimney liner yesterday. Derek provided us with a written summary of the work performed and his findings on the condition both of our flues and our chimney cap. He arrived at our house about an hour later than scheduled, but called us at the scheduled time to let us know he was running late. Derek is knowledgeable about his craft and is able to articulate his recommendations in a clear manner that any homeowner should be able to understand. Description of Work: I had Derek Carmichael of Horizon Chimney Services clean my fireplace flue and my gas heating flue last week. He did an excellent job and his pricing is extremely reasonable. He is very professional and always very informative. Horizon Chimney Services performs chimney cleaning, stainless/copper chimney caps, chimney liners and wood/pellet/gas stove installations. I highly recommend Horizon. In September of 2008, Derek did extensive work at my home. We needed extensive work done on our chimney and Derek performed the work efficiently and always kept me up to date on the costs of this project. Derek assured me that he could be reached for any questions or concerns. My first attempt at a fire in our repaired fireplace ended in a very smoky house. Derek stopped by the very next day to check on things, unfortunately I was not home. He still checked the cap even though we had missed each other. My next attempt at a fire also resulted in a smoky house. Derek came over and determined our fire box was a little too big and immediately installed a smoke guard. The smoke guard solved the problem. Upon completion of this project, he spent time showing me tips on how to build a fire. There were several points that he showed me which were extremely helpful. I do not usually experience such professional, prompt attention. I feel that Derek Carmichael was a great help to my family and we are looking forward to working with him for any future needs.
