Dick is a nice guy. He was very busy and missed our first estimate appointment. He apologized profusely. I agree with another member that he is very talkative. Overall, things went very smoothly and I am very pleased with the work. They come as promised at 7am and stripped and shingled the roof in one day. It looks great, and the flashing work looks so much better than it did before. He gave me a great price, 1700 less than another estimate. I would definitely use him again.

Excellent. Dick Tolan is very thorough, more so than the others we received estimates from. He also made recommendations on materials and helped to explain why some of the issues that we had were not really problems. They finished the job in two days. we were impressed at how they did the roof in sections to prevent any damage over the weekend.

Excellent experience. Dick and his sons were wonderful to work with. Dick comes out and does the estimates - he's a very chatty guy, but extremely honest and true to his word. Work began about 2 weeks after the estimate (start date was delayed due to rain). Dick's two sons perform the work with a crew of four other men - they were clearly very experienced. Crew arrived as scheduled at 7:30 A.M every morning and worked intensely without any breaks. The job took 2 1/2 days of work to complete. Removing 3 layers of old shingles including wooden shingles and installing the plywood increases the time and labor intensity of the job. They did a great job with clean up - this job was performed in April 2007, before we'd done our spring yard clean up and the yard was much cleaner after they were done. I was extremely pleased with the work and with the result. The new roof looks wonderful (and functions wonderfully). As far as price, Dick outbid our other estimates ($9000 and $12,000).

Dick called me back himself in a timely fashion (and all other calls were returned nearly immediately). He was able to come out within 48 hours of the call to give me an estimate on the steps and the awning. He wouldn't do the awning by itself ($300) but that doesn't seem unreasonable to me. When I called to make an appointment for the actual work, he was able to come out the next business day (I called on a Friday and the work was performed on Monday). A large crew arrived and performed the work quickly (completed by 11:30 AM). The steps were complicated by the fact that his guys had to work with an existing iron railing that was set into granite at the ground level. The new stairs are nice and square and match up to the railing perfectly. While the work wasn't that difficult, it was performed professionally and quickly. I'd definitely hire these guys again to do work on my house. They might not be the cheapest around, but I'll pay extra for this level of service.

Great - he faxed me his quote asap & he came in as (by $800) the lowest bid to boot! Next highest bids were much higher (& not using copper!), one guy was 3X Dick's bid. If you can get him, I'd suggest using these guys, I'm very happy w/their work.

Dick Tolan (father) specs out the job, does the design, stays in touch with the customer. Responsive to customer's needs and handles unforeseen problems (in our case, nutty obstructionist neighbors) graciously. David Tolan (son) does hands-on construction with a hardworking crew. Really nice work, very solid, beautiful finish where finish counts. Other contractors in the neighborhood admired the job (unusual to say the least). We are very satisfied.

We found a leak in our roof and I contacted several roofing companies. Dick Tolan did the most thorough inspection of the roof (spent at least 1 hour on the roof) and found several other problems. Although he did not say we absolutely needed a new roof he took the time to explain the pros and cons of a repair vs. new roof. All of the other roofing companies came to the same conclusion and also did a good job but Dick was the most thorough and came in $2000-$3000 less for his estimate. They finished the work quickly and did a decent job of clean-up (there was debris left in the garage and a few stray nails). But so far the roof seems to be working and looks great!

The job from first contact (estimate) to end of job was excellent. Returned every phone call promptly. They came out each time exactly when they said, started the job and finished according to plan. Placed protective coverings over house and shrubs close to house. Made sure the dumpster company didn't scratch up or damage driveway when placing dumpster. Full clean up after job including coming back two days later to sweep up after dumpster company picked up the dumpster. Truly Dick and his son were a joy to work with, very conscientious, honest, professional and polite. And we initially contacted them from what we read about them on this site and we were very pleased with the results. They could have even sold me some things I didn't need which was recommended by others but they were nice enough to explain why it wasn't needed and suggested we not spend money for it, although if we wanted to do it they would. I do have a few other jobs and yes they will be my first call.

Dick Tolan and company did a great job on our house. We have a turn-of-the-century cape that had a old multi-layered roof that suffered leaks from ice dams and due to venting that was poorly installed through the roof. They understood not only what type of roofing work we needed but also our desire to restore the house to its earlier appearance, suggesting roofing materials, pulling older vinyl soffits and adding rafter tails. In addition, cedar siding was replaced on two dormers and in areas where additional water protection and flashing was installed. The workmen were reasonably careful around extensive plantings around the house. The overall workmanship was first rate, including especially the new cedar shingles. The house and roofline looks great as well, we've received a few compliments from neighbors.

Mr. Tolan returned my call the same day my message was left. He gave me a fair estimate for the project, set a date to come out to fix it, and his company showed up on time to repair my roof. Both he and his crew were very professional and did an excellent job. It was a pleasure dealing with this company, and I give them the highest compliment and would recommend them. I was very happy with the overall work done and will hire them again.

Dick Tolan was wonderful to work with. He and his son were polite, professional, and reasonable. I had three quotes for the same job for identical materials and extent of work. One for 35K from a outfit with high recommendations on Angie's List and one for 14K from an outfit not on Angie's List. After investigating the 14K contractor, I found they had over nine complaints with the BBB. Dick Tolan and Sons started on time, finished the job in four days (one day ahead of schedule), did a great job with good workmanship, and cleaned the site well. They were a pleasure to work with.

Dick is a really nice guy and is very helpful. He even called in from vacation to set up our appointment. They were clean and efficient. I'm considering having him do some more work around here, as they do windows and doors as well.

They did a very nice job. The price seemed reasonable. They did good work. I have no complaints and would recommend them to others.

Dick was responsive to our first call, and returned messages promptly. He was the only one willing to perform this minor repair, when others told us frankly that it would be difficult to find a roofer for such a small job. Dick showed up when he said he would, repaired the problem correctly, and was thorough in his follow-up to be sure we were satisfied. We would absolutely call him FIRST when it comes time to replace our roof.

American Discount came on time for the evaluation, provided a written bid, did the work on schedule and for the contracted price, left the room in question cleaner than we left it, and was very pleasant to work with. The work, to my untrained eye, looks like very good craftsmanship. They took the extra effort to redesign the skylight opening so that future leaks through our shallow grade roof will be unlikely. I don't expect we'll have leaking skylight problems with this one again. We're very happy with them, especially in comparison to our past experiences with other roofers. We will definitely use them again should we have any future roofing needs.

Some delay setting up initial appointment (phone tag issue). The owner who came to do the estimate spent about 1/2 hour looking at the roof and gave me a verbal estimate with very few specifics about what would be included. He said that he could do it in the next few days. I felt that he was over-eager for my business in a way that did not give me confidence. Also, his bid was less than half of my other bids, and given the size of our roof (gables, high turret), I thought $9000 was not realistic.

Great experience working with Dick Tolan and son. Courteous, explained in detail the job and the various options available. Did the job in under the estimated time. They were responsive to phone calls, and reliable in doing what they said they would do.

THE COMPANY CALLED ME BACK PROMPTLY AND WAS VERY PROFESSIONAL (NOT ALWAYS THE CASE WITH CONTRACTORS). UNFORTUNATELY, MY HOUSE IS TOO FAR AWAY FROM THEIR AREA.

DICK TOLAN RETURNED OUR INITIAL CALL WITHIN A DAY AND EVALUATED THE JOB SOON AFTER. HE WAS PROFESSIONAL AND EXPLAINED EVERYTHING THAT WAS NEEDED, INCLUDING RECOMMENDING PREP WORK THAT WE SHOULD DO (IE: COVERING THINGS IN ATTIC, SHRUBS, ETC). HIS QUOTE WAS VERY REASONABLE, LESS THAN WHAT WE EXPECTED. HE WAS ABLE TO DO THE JOB WITHIN A WEEK OF OUR ACCEPTING HIS PROPOSAL AND THEY COMPLETED IT IN 2 DAYS AS QUOTED. THE LABORERS DID THEIR JOB THEN CLEANED UP EVERYTHING AFTER. DICK CAME OUT FOR A FINAL INSPECTION. WOULD RECOMMEND FOR ROOFING AND WILL CONSIDER USING THIS COMPANY FOR VINYL SIDING AND WINDOW REPLACEMENT.

THE REPRESENTATIVE WAS NOT ANXIOUS TO COME OUT, BUT DID. HE WAS ON TIME FOR APPT., BUT WAS NONCOMMITTAL REGARDING THE WORK. HE SAID WE SHOULD WAIT FOR A LEAK. SOMEWHAT UNSATISFACTORY RESPONSE AS WE ARE TRYING TO FIX BEFORE THAT OCCURRED. HE TRIED TO GIVE SUGGESTIONS, BUT ALL WE WANTED WAS A PRICE TO FIX.

THEY WERE POLITE AND CAME AS PROMISED.

IN AN AGE WHEN IT IS HARD TO GUARANTEE THE ARRIVAL OF SERVICEPEOPLE, THE TOLLANDS DELIVERED THE MATERIALS AT 7 A.M. ON THE DAY THEY WERE TO START WORKING AND COMPLETED THE JOB ONE DAY AHEAD OF SCHEDULE. ALL SURPLUS MATERIALS AND WASTE WERE REMOVED. THOROUGHLY PROFESSIONAL AND SATISFACTORY WORK.
