I don't know where to start about the awful work that they did. John Asselin, the owner of the company is a talker who can't meet what he says. I can't even count how many times that John lied to me. 1. He said that he used the grout that he had in my bathroom floor & walls instead of the grout I got because his was better and had waterproofing in it. He still used the grout I got and didn't even use the waterproofing sealant that came with it. All the grout I got was mixed up and the additives boxes were open and used. 2. He said he would put the sealant on the kitchen floor after grouting. He never did that, and the bottle of sealant remains unopened. 3. He said he took the tiles along the wall around the outside corner out, recut them, put new tiles in, and redid that whole area. The tiles on there were chipped at all the same places and still at the same crooked angles as previously so there was no way that ever happened. 4. He said he would wipe up the grout and mortar that was on the floor up, clean everything up and remove the ram board. Grout and mortar are still stuck on all the same places of my solid oak floor, my bathtub still has leftover grout and mortar on it, and the ram board on the first floor is still there. 5. He said he would remove the vanity from my house and take it away, that was never done. 6. He said he would make perfect cuts around the toilet, instead the cuts were not even the shape of the toilet. Before: They told me that they usually don't sign contracts, which was a red flag. So I drafted one up and they signed it eventually. They were also available in a few weeks, which was another red flag. All the flooring contractors in this area are usually booked months to half a year out. They also had awful reviews online and were previously Hampshire Flooring Company, but I always believe that people change for the better so why not put your trust into them? But then of course, this experience once again told me that you should never do that. During: I called him and brought up all the issues I had in the process and communicated some through email. He assured that every one of them would be taken care of. But they weren't and when I brought them up again, he assured me again that he'll fix it and do it right. He never did. After: A picture is worth a thousand words. As you can see in those 40 photos that don't even fully cover half of what's wrong with his work, there is no section of wall or floor tile that is flat or level. They go up and down and protrude in and out, and there are no straight or clean lines. They did not do 45 degrees inner angles, which you're supposed to do when laying wall tile in corners. They just butted tile up against each other! They chipped the tiles while cutting it and just decided to put the chipped tiles on! The chipped tiles stick out on the outside corners and most of the tiles were laid down crooked! They got grout all over my solid oak floors and didn't clean it up. They made ugly cuts and chipped the tile in the process. They left a terrible mess that still awaits me to clean up. There is still grout and mortar everywhere on my solid oak floors, toilets, door handles, etc. Did I mention that they only grouted half of one tile? They were supposed to do my basement floor, but I am terminating that. I brought up many issues and problems during the process that they assured me would be fixed but never did. Other contractors and friends came by and were all aghast at the work. They unanimously agreed that it was unacceptable and urged me not to give Earth First Flooring and Tile the remaining payment and to cancel the work on the basement before it even begins and that is what exactly I will do.

It did not go well because the communication between this vendor and our carpenter, who had to frame in the shower, was poor. We blame it on the vendor who did not provide specific measurements and detail for our carpenter to do the framing correctly. This resulted in increased cost in time, materials and labor. We were never given an itemized product list that broke down each component by price. There was 'allegedly' a sale that we were pushed to take advantage of. All in all, we were quite unhappy with the process. The workmanship, however, was fine and the finished product is fine.

The worker was late both times that he came. He dumped his caulking stuff on the bushes in front of our house. There were also cigarette butts left in our driveway. The job was done, but afterwords there was not one follow up call. The job looks good, but I wouldn't recommend them.
Description of Work: We hired them to replace tile in our home.

John Asselin gave me a price of $1000 which seemed to be a very reasonable price compared to Home Depot' s quote of $1600 which was the lowest quote I had other than Aseslins. He seemed professional at the time. When I agreed to have him install my kitchen vinyl, He tried to persuade me to give him the whole amount up front.. I should have taken this as a warning sign. I ended up giving him $600 with the agreement that he would get the other $400 when he finished the job. When the day came that the vinyl was supposed to be installed, the installer did not show up. John actually called me and told me that the job was finished at the end of the day. I called a friend to check since I do not live near the house. My friend told me that it was not done. The same thing happened 3 times over the course of a week. The second and third time I went there myself to check driving almost an hour to find that nothing had been done. The installer did finally show up. But when I got there, the tile was laid down but the molding had not been replaced on the walls and there was nothing to hold down the vinyl in entrances so anyone could have tripped over it. Also 2 doors were off the hinges. I found out later that this is because the installer did not have the proper tools to trim down the bottom of the door so that it would not rub on the floor. The installer did finally show up to finish the job. However, the vinyl that was installed was not the one I had picked out which matched the vinyl in the bathroom. John Asselin had originally told me that all of the vinyl that he sold had either a 15 or 20 year warranty. John Asselin verified after the install that the vinyl he used did not have this warranty. The vinyl that had been installed was a very thin, low quality vinyl, with a different design and color than the vinyl I had picked out. I was also told that as part of the installation, the sub floor would be replaced (John told me that he would replace only part of it and that this is why I was saving money compared to what home depot would charge me. Home Depot would have replaced the whole sub floor.). None of the sub floor was replaced. New vinyl was installed over the old vinyl.

Response from Earth First Flooring And Tile Company
The member owes us $400.00 for the labor & he tore the floor when he attempted to slide a refrigerator over it, now all these claims. I will repair the tear at no charge if he pays the balance due. 1-To his first complaint, we offer a 5% discount to anyone who prepays. He wanted the lowest cost to do the job, he agreed to do the job, he agreed to take the discount, then did not want to prepay, we still have him the discount. 2- To the second complaint we showed up on time after driving a hour to get to the house and waited for another hour, the doors were locked we could not get in. I told him this & he said sometimes the front door “sticks” we returned the next day to do the work, we completed the work and found we needed to do a lot more extra labor I.E. cut door, repair base, also needed transitions we returned the next day to complete everything, I did call him once, and said we were done, at that time I was not aware of the extras the installer needed to do. He returned & fixed everything. 3- I never told him I would replace any subfloor we prepped the existing floor very well & went over it, he has lied in order to get a new floor because he ripped the one we put in. The final product was good, however they left a huge mess! We left the house for a few days so they could complete the work. When we returned the house - inside and out -was a huge mess. there was a layer of dust everywhere inside the house - not just in the bathroom. Our neighbors informed us our fire alarm went off, the fire dept had to come to the house to check it out. We were told this is "normal" and that the dust could not be prevented. Outside the house there were hundreds of cigarette butts from the workers and the grout was left all over the driveway and our lawn. There was tile scraps all over the lawn where they were working to cut the tile. I am amazed they could call themselves professional.
