Description of Work: For mold remediation in north wall due to ice dams, they isolated the work area with a plastic sheet and duct tape. They created negative air pressure with an air blower/filter, exhausting out a window. Then they removed all of the inside wood paneling (real pine, tongue and groove, varnished) and examined the interior of the wall. Some mold found but no "black mold". They removed all insulation, treated the area with a thyme based cleaner and mold killer. The replaced the old insulation with new insulation and replaced the paneling with almost no damage (a few nicks, almost imperceptible). They were professional and checked in with us about the progress during the work. They thoroughly vacuumed the room and surfaces to eliminate spores. All in all, well done. The only downside was that the smell of the thyme was quite intense for several days. We were able to keep the room closed and an air cleaner running for several days, opening windows when temperature permitted. Six days later, the smell is still perceptible but largely gone. I would use them again.

Description of Work: They removed asbestos shingles and asphalt shingles from my eighteenth century house and disposed of the waste. They were punctual, goodnatured, fast, strong and really responsive to my priorities. They knew I would appreciate an old advertising sign that was in between the layers of shingles and they left it for me in situ so I could photograph it and take it off myself. There was a crew of about three sometimes four men, and they were all great. They were all suited up and very careful when they did the asbestos, and then they had to work hard to get all the asphalt off. They stayed late the last few nights to get it done, and they did really good work on a difficult job. Couldn't be happier.

Frank Tilli and his team did a great job, and I especially appreciated the efforts of our project lead Dan. We had a short timetable because our (c) 1936 boiler was leaking and needed to be gotten rid of asap. The job was more extensive than it looked because there turned out to be a bunch of asbestos-covered piping that was obscured behind various partitions and walls in the basement. Removal of one wall turned up an electrical problem which also had to be dealt with. The professional crew made sure the job got done within one day and at cost despite the wrinkles. In doing his initial walk-through, Frank suggested the possibility that some asbestos from the leaky boiler might have contaminated the basement due to a whitish residue on the floor (fortunately the boiler asbestos appeared intact once it was disassembled). I'm not sure how likely the possibility of contamination was but if we weren't operating under an insurance claim I would want to know for sure whether we were dealing with friable vs intact asbestos in the basement. But either way I'm glad to have the remediation done--a project well worth the while. I would recommend Abide.

The estimator was very straightforward and professional and gave line item estimates for our options. The two techs they sent were a bit rough looking, but showed up on-time and knew their stuff. They sealed off the area and used "glove bags" to remove the insulation without releasing any into the environment. Even though we had neglected to check with the boiler installer as to how much insulation to remove, the techs figured it out; when the boiler was later installed there were no problems. The area was left neat and clean. If we have the remainder of the pipe insulation removed, we'll certainly use this provider.
Description of Work: Abide removed about 50 feet of asbestos steam pipe insulation so that we could have our 1960's era boiler replaced.

Top notch service. They took 30% off the initial estimate because they accomplished a two-day job in one day! I can't be happier with how it turned out. The technicians went above and beyond by cleaning the grout and re-caulking along the tile lines. They even cleaned the bath tub!

My house is a 1910 Federal Colonial and had a huge oil boiler. The boiler appeared to be as old as the house and was covered in asbestos. Abide arrived on time, were very friendly and professional in the work they did. They arrived at 7 A.M. and were done by 2:30 P.M. My wife and I arevery happy with the work they did.

I want to make a distinction between the Abide administration and the Abide site supervisor and crew: > The Abide administration, particularly Greg Lindsey, was professional, responsive, and detail-oriented. > The Abide site supervisor and crew were sloppy. I visited the house when the Abide site supervisor and crew were first setting up. The site supervisor said there was fiber-glass insulation underneath the vermiculite, so it would all have to come out to remove any possible asbestos. The next time I visited the house the crew was packing up after the independent testing. The independent industrial hygienist said that during the attic abatement, some of the vermiculite had fallen into interior walls. Of particular concern was vermiculite that had fallen into the bathroom wall with the removable panel for the plumbing. The industrial hygienist was clearly worried enough to be sure I knew so that no plumber or myself opened the panel (to repair the pipes) without being aware that there was contaminated vermiculite inside. I knew the Abide crew had caused the vermiculite to fall because just a few months earlier, there had been plumbing issues and work done behind the panel. (Also, the site supervisor had told me there was fiber-glass batting as the first layer of insulation in the attic...) The site supervisor took no responsibility and acted like I shouldn't be concerned. He rolled his eyes at my questions. The crew continued to pack up and rushed to go. When I received the final report from the industrial hygienist, I realized the Abide crew had done a sloppy job. They hadn't sealed all the openings in the attic floor and had allowed the suspect material to fall into several open wall spaces. They'd had no regard for the hazard they were posing to me or a plumber. (I also discovered that the Abide crew had ripped up all the floor boards in the attic and then left them there in a pile with bits of vermiculite stuck in the cracks and slots of the boards. The site supervisor had assured me the boards had been HEPA vacuumed and were fine, but I could see visible and accessible vermiculite in the slots. They left the boards in a precarious pile with nails sticking out everywhere.) The Abide administration did do its best to remedy the plumbing panel situation. When I contacted the Abide operations manager, Greg Lindsey, he was polite, respectful, and concerned. However, the damage had been done. He did have an Abide staff return to my house with a HEPA vacuum to open the plumbing panel in my master bedroom and remove as much of the fallen vermiculite as possible. But again, when I checked the panel afterward, there was still vermiculite visible in the open space around the pipes. Finally, Greg came on his own with a HEPA vacuum and completed a thorough and complete removal of all visible and accessible vermiculite from the area inside the plumbing panel. I greatly appreciate his extraordinary professionalism and commitment to his customers, but it was remedial. The Abide crew had been sloppy. They hadn't done a proper sealing job and had rushed the abatement. They also left me a mess of boards, vermiculite bits, and nails in my attic. So although Greg was phenomenal in doing his best to correct their sub-par work, I don't know if I would use Abide again. Abide has a good reputation and the administration is clearly informed and professional, but I don't trust that the site supervisor and crew would take my home seriously. Now with my experience, I would be more informed and get a much more clear contract. I would make sure the contract included details on all the sealing, on the whole containment, and on the clean up of debris. With this first abatement, I was inexperienced and feel that allowed the Abide crew to do inferior work and be less careful. They did the bare minimum as it was stated in the contract. UPDATE #1: I don't think I would use Abide again--but I will definitely need another abatement. I had an electrician at the house to change the bathroom outlets to GFI. When he removed the outlet plate in the second-floor bathroom, contaminated vermiculite insulation fell out. So only the area inside the plumbing panel is clear because Greg came and vacuumed it. But the Abide crew caused vermiculite insulation to fall into all the interior bathroom walls. I can't even change a bathroom light fixture or cabinet without a secondary abatement--due to their sloppiness. UPDATE #2: I called Abide when I noticed some vermiculite insulation spilling from the bathroom light switch. At that point, I decided to check the shower pipe area again, and there was more vermiculite there too. I just wanted to get any of the exposed insulation removed from any openings in the bathroom walls where Abide's crew had allowed it to fall. I want to be able to change and repair those parts of the bathroom without exposing plumbers, electricians, or my family to asbestos. That meant someone from Abide coming to vacuum the shower pipe area, and behind the light switch, the light, and the medicine cabinet. I called Greg, and he was professional and responsive again. He spoke to the owner of the company, and they agreed to make this mistake right without charge or hassle. I was very impressed that they both came to the house to see the small areas, make a plan, and talk to me about my concerns. I didn't want to be excessive or demanding--no need for that. But I wanted the mistake fixed, and Greg assured me the technician would be careful, thorough, and clean. All three areas were vacuumed, foam or batting insulation was inserted in the right places to prevent any more falling vermiculite, and my house was neat. I was able to change the medicine cabinet and the light without any exposure. I know we all make mistakes--it's how we handle them that shows the quality of a business. And I was impressed with this effort.
Description of Work: Abide was hired to do a complete removal of vermiculite insulation from an attic. The attic was an unfinished attic with a low hip roof, approximately 550 square feet. Abide was to set up a containment area with negative air and use double bagging and HEPA vacuums to remove all the vermiculite insulation made by WR Grace. (WR Grace used a vermiculite mine in Montana that's contaminated with asbestos so the EPA requires their vermiculite be removed.) I spoke with Greg Lindsey, the Operations Manager, to get his assurance that the crew would seal all areas between the attic and second floor to prevent spreading the vermiculite through the rest of the house. After the abatement, Abide was to have the area tested and cleared.
