Mark has the remarkable ability to envision projects that he's never been asked to do before, and then designs as he works, overcoming any obstacle to complete the job. And he's not above helping us with yard work, leaf removal, yard and garden cleanups, planting trees, shrubs and perennials, and mulching everything after. He's done other jobs as well, like preparing the site for a garden shed, installing a drainage system that works(!) to keep rainwater out of the basement, and other jobs too numerous to mention. He's easy to work with, and his fees are not overblown, even modest compared to what I believe other, larger contracting companies charge.
Description of Work: Mark Rutledge of Rutledge Contracting Company has completed numerous jobs for us over the last four years. WE first hired him in November, 2008, to cut down and remove over 70 dead/dying tress from our property. He has returned from time to time since then to remove tree damage due to weather, etc. In the spring of 2009, Mark began the construction of a 50 ft. long waterfall and a pond of about 120 sq.feet using the numerous granite rocks/boulders from the site excavation of our house. Despite a unusually wet and cool spring that extended into summer that year, and despite numerous situations, with unexposed rocks that had to be overcome, both projects of his were completed in late summer that year. In addition, he built two small terraces, one near the waterfall, the other by the pond, using stones and pavers. Mark returned in the to do finish work and help with the landscaping down and around the area. He accompanied us during trips to nurseries, pond equipment stores and others, to help choose what plants/materials we needed for these jobs. In 2010, Mark was back removing more trees and brush, and began to excavate the site for a small horse barn, round pen, turnout paddock and a new kind of paddock (Paradise) that will traverse 2 acres of rugged hillside with wide envclosed tracts/ trails. This is an ongoing project that we hope to complete this fall. The barn site is ready and construction will begin soon. Another contractor is building the barn, but Mark & Co.. will install the barn trusses and complete other work for the builder, plus build the round pen, install the property line fence, complete the excavation and building of the trails, put up an inner P. paddock electric fence. In addition, Mark built a retaining wall on the barn site last month to shore up the bank. It's a sturdy and attractive wall, even though it will be mostly obscured once the barn is built. Last spring, he helped us clear a 11/2 acre lot in W. Falmouth of brush and leaves, then installed an "Electrobraid" fence around it, to be used as an extra paddock in warm weather. Mark Rutledge "throws" himself into his work and won't stop 'til he gets it right. He's given us good quality service at a modest price. We were lucky to have him referred to us by another happy customer.

Mark and his team were persistent and dedicated to building the water feature. In short, it wasn't a good summer for constructing a waterfall on a steep hillside. The numerous thunderstorms, downpours, and cool weather made the task difficult and time consuming. Then there were all the hidden rocks and boulders that had to be removed or implemented into the plan. This was Mark's first waterfall/pond project, and he did the research needed to build them, especially spending time checking out the types and quality of water pumps. He also spent many extra hours working on the water flow pattern and force. The result is truly remarkable, a wonderfully unique water feature! The shed site was finished in two days, despite having to excavate and level a sloping wooded area of the property. They had to remove a few trees and they even dug up some of my perennials that were in the way for me. After leveling the site, they added a weed barrier and then a thick layer of gravel. In addition, they arranged the rocks that were dug up and used them as a retaining wall for added stability. All of this at a very reasonable price. We're very happy with Mark's work.
Description of Work: Mark prepared the site and constructed a hillside waterfall with a pond below. He also prepared the site for a new shed, which was brought in and built on 9/04/2009.
