After booking my appointment over the phone and scheduling for the contrator to visit my home within the week, I rearranged my work schedule and took the necessary time off to be available at my home when the contractor would arrive. The morning of the appointment, I received a phone call from Melanie at Willard Company apologizing that the contractor was ill and we would have to reschedule. No problem. Everyone get's sick. I had to take time off work but we rescheduled a few days later. I again arranged to have the time off for the next meeting with the contractor. The morning of the next meeting which was supposed to be at 10am, I had prepared some photos of the exterior of the problem areas of my condo. It was cold and wet outside, so I thought I would help the contractor by bringing up these problems on my smartphone within an email attachment for when he arrived to take a look at. Around 10:15am, there was no contractor in sight. I decided to check up on my emails while I waited...and there is an email from Willard Company that I had apparently received at 8:56am. (So, yes, I should've been paying attention to my personal emails that morning instead of preparing for my meeting with Willard Company.) Here's the note from Willard Company: "Unfortunately, we do not have the manpower or equipment to even begin to tackle a project as large as yours. Mr. Willard looks at the homes via google earth each morning so that we are not wasting your time or ours. We aplogize for any inconvenience this may have caused." I will not speak towards the quality of work of Willard Company as they never did any work for me. I however do want to encourage other possible customers to not be misled by a website that does not accurately describle the extent of the companies services. I also believe, specifically for my circumstances, the Willard Company should have been aware before re-scheduling my appointment that they could not "tackle" a project as large as mine (by the way my home is 1250 square feet total). Most importantly to me, was the lack of a phone call when cancelling the last appointment. I wasn't even upset at the first cancelled appointment even though my time had been wasted because those things happen. The professional way to handle the situation was to call. They never called me to cancel the second appointment. They also, never bothered to make a decision about my project until that morning. I couldn't trust a company to do a job if they wait until the day of and the hour before to cancel the job.
Description of Work: I found Willard Company on the internet as I was searching for a general contractor or company that could perform; masonry, carpentry, and gutter replacement to my condo in South Boston. I thought I had struck gold when I found all of these items specifically listed on their website and called to book an appointment. Unfortunately, that's when things went downhill.

Mrs. [member name], The responsible party was immediately spoken to regarding this matter. We take tremendous pride in our service before, during and after a job is complete and I wholeheartedly agree with you regarding the need for a phone call. This was a new office employee and the employee has been since spoken to regarding this matter, long before your anticipated review was posted. I apologize immensely. This is not an accurate reflection of our company. But our company is run and employed by people, and on rare occasions, even the best people make mistakes. Regards, Parker M Willard Jr.

Hello [Member's name removed], Thank you for your review. I apologize that scheduling was difficult. But please understand that we received SEVERAL THOUSAND phone calls during the snow emergency. We were overcome with the overwhelming volume of phone calls. We were working 90-100 hour work weeks to keep up with what we could. We did the best we could to service all of our clients as quickly as possible. If you have any further issues, call my cell phone directly at 781-858-7496. I am the 5th Generation in the company and we take enormous pride in our service both during and after the job is complete. Although I am disappointed you felt our overall service merited a "C" overall grade, thank you again for taking the time to write a review and I am glad we were able to address your problem during this most historic winter. George C. Willard Company was the only ones to answer my phone this past winter (2015) to remove snow for my roof. They are up front with their pricing and costs. I needed my roof cleared and the ice dams minimized. Willard Co was very accommodating and had a reasonable timeframe. They even waited for a storm to pass and then come so I would not pay to remove snow and then have more to remove. Their staff is professional and explained all the charges up front. The staff was honest and got the work done fast! Just by simply picking up the phone, they got my business now and for the future.

When I first contacted Willard, they put me on their schedule for ice dam and snow removal. They told me that it would be a 1 to 2 week wait as they were slammed with work due to the 7 feet of snow that fell in 3 weeks.I told them what my budget was for the removal ($400.00) and they said they would complete as much as they could for that amount. They called me 1 week later and asked if I still needed their services. They were set to come the next day but I was concerned that they would only get half of the work done and I wasn't sure if it was worth the money. They were willing to come out and look at the job before I committed. They came out and said that they could knock out the job in about an hour. So, with this coming in lower than their initial estimate, I accepted. I came home from work the next day and there were no ice dams, no snow, absolutely nothing on that side of the roof. They cleaned up the area where they dumped the snow and ice from the roof. They also applied ice melt in the gutter for any lingering ice. They did a really good job. I would use them again for this service. The only negative for me was the initial service charge of $200.00 for just showing up. This charge had nothing to do with the labor charges which were $100.00/ per man per hour. I had two workers for 2 1/4 hours. I thought this rate was very fair.

[member name removed] Thank you for your review. I am glad we were able to assist you during, what turned out to be, the worst winter ever. We received thousands of phone calls and serviced who we could, as quickly as we could. The $200 Service Fee covers the use and purchase of equipment to remove the snow. We have roofs rakes breaking ($50-75 Each) , shovels breaking ($15-20 Each), ladders breaking ($250-500 Each) and other associated equipment breaking on almost every job. My trucks have taken an absolute beating. It's dirty, difficult, dangerous work. Believe me, contrary to a popular yet flawed belief, we were not "getting rich" on roof cleanings. Our prices were a far cry less than a few of our competitors', who I know had charged out at $450-500 an hour for a 2 man crew. And those charging less were fly-by-nights with little or no insurance or qualifications to do such work. We performed the roof cleanings as an opportunity to introduce ourselves to a new group of potential clients. I hope we accomplished that and hope to hear from you in the future for your roofing and exterior needs. Regards, Parker M Willard Jr. 5th Generation

Willard was responsive from start to finish, showing up on time to provide an estimate, working with me to keeps costs managable, and quickly returning calls. They were extremely busy at the end of the roofing season in November, so it took a few weeks to get an install date, but they came when they said they would , finished the job quickly and professionally and responded to one punch list issue right away.. They were not the lowest bidder but seem to have the most experience in EPDM roofing. I am fully satisfied with the job and recommend them.

While I was happy with them doing the skylight I asked them for a quote to do part of the roof I wanted, but they never got back to me. Once they got to work they went right at it and finished quicker than I thought they would. They did a good job. Their price was basically in an emergency situation so I took it as it was. I would say the price was fair. The quality of their work was excellent. Their responsiveness and punctuality for the skylight was good, but after that it was dismal.

Showed up on time and did an efficient job. Four men took 2-1/2 hours and gave me the tab: $1,515.00! They have a "service charge" of $200 which is separate from actually doing the job, which they just tack onto your bill. They cannot adequately explain what this "service charge" is for, since they charge $100 per man per hour for the job (starting not from when they arrive at your house, but from when they leave their facility). Isn't that the service? At a time when you really need your roof cleared and most contractors are backlogged, I felt I had no choice, but I still think the charges are excessive.

Hello , Our contract stated that there was a initial service fee of $200 and that our hour charges are "port-to-port" That being said, you were actually only charged for one way. This is a contract you read and approved. It wasn't a "tack on" secret charge hidden in the fine print. As for the justification of the $200 service fee: This covers the use and purchase of equipment to remove the snow. We have roofs rakes breaking ($50-75 Each) , shovels breaking ($12-15 Each), ladders breaking ($250-500 Each) and other associated equipment breaking on almost every job. My trucks have taken an absolute beating. It's dirty, difficult, dangerous work. Believe me, contrary to a popular flawed belief, we are not getting rich on roof cleanings. Our price if far less than a few of our competitors', who I know have charged out at $450-500 an hour for a 2 man crew. As for the $100 per man, per hour: This covers our men's salaries, worker's compensation, liability insurance, health insurance, the 5 people in the office fielding the calls and a very small profit margin. Unlike someone you'd find on craigslist or otherwise, who may charge less, we are properly licensed, insured and bonded. We use this work as an opportunity to make new customers/clients in the spring. The last thing we want to do is make any enemies. And we didn't get to our 142nd year by shirking our responsibilities to our clients. I hope this clears it up for you and anyone reading your review. I am always available. We have a 24 hour answering service. Regards, Parker M Willard Jr. 5th Generation at Willard Co.

Very responsive with quote. I initially went to them because they advertised both roofing and carpentry. I have a flat roof with a deck. They would not do the deck, too involved, but did introduce me to a good carpenter who worked with them to get the job done. They provided a good price for the roof. Had to keep on the crew to keep their trash and debris in the dumpster, but overall went well. I had to pester them to do final punch list work. Most were taken care of but they never addressed all my concerns. I have a large area of standing water that they told me not worry about without coming out to see. The roof trim is not flush in all areas and they only fixed in some places. They simply said the roof is guaranteed so do not worry. The project manager never came to my house to see what my concerns were. In the end I gave up.

[Member name removed], Thank you for both your positive and critical comments. It helps us better our customer service. As for concerns brought up in your review: 1) Our contract does state that standing water may occur. This is due to the framing of the house and not a product of our workmanship. Any sag in the roof was a pre-existing condition. Rectifying such a condition would require reframing the roof, which would be hardly a small expense. 2) Our crew leader provided you with both progress reports & pictures and was available for any other concerns. If you have any further concerns about the metal work or any other parts of the job, please call the office and speak with Mr. Willard directly. We will be happy to come out and go over any concerns you may have and rectify any problems, as part of our workmanship guarantee. Thank you again for your business. -PJ Willard

They were very responsive and punctual in the bid process. I obtained two bids - the Willard bid contained better materials in the bid while the other bid offered better materials for more money. Both bids ended up about the same, but Willard rep called me back and negotiated. I did not like their plan / price for my flat concrete roof on garage, which was $5,000 for a rubber covering. We decided on an elastomer coating (used for many commercial buildings) for far less money. The men doing the work were very diligent and hard working. They listened to my concerns about plants in the garden and a glass table on the patio. Halfway through the job, work stopped due to rain. They were careful to cover all unprotected surfaces - I noticed no water leaks into the house. The roof is still new and held up well during last weekend's all-day rain. I am very confident they will correct any problems if they arise.

After our roof leaked this past winter, we needed both interior and exterior work done to repair the damage. We called Willard after reading very positive reviews and were happy to hear they could handle all 3 aspects of the job - roofing, replacing a window, and replacing part of a ceiling that was damaged. Mr. Willard came out to give us an estimate and explained that the roof leak had happened due to poor craftsmanship on the roof prior to us owning the house. He explained each part of the work that needed to be done in simple terms and let us know the options we had within each portion of the work. We chose to replace additional windows while we took care of the roof leak damage. The estimate was consistent with other estimates we had received and no prices changed during the project. Melanie handled all of our scheduling and kept us apprised of the timelines for each aspect of the work. The roofing crew came first - they were friendly, professional, and efficient and finished their work in a day. The same was true of the ceiling/sheetrock crew, though they did leave behind a residue on our wall. After calling the company to ask about it, I received a call back from Mr. Willard within an hour to personally apologize for the residue and to let me know it would be rectified at my earliest convenience. It was taken care of the following day and Mr. Willard followed up with me yet again to be certain I was satisfied with the work. Finally, Mr. Willard?s son, PJ, installed 5 new windows to the upstairs of our house. He was professional and friendly and did an excellent job. We are very pleased with the quality of the work that was completed, the professionalism and punctuality of the crews, and the ease of communicating with Willard Company (returned phone calls, clear invoices, etc.). We are now considering replacing additional windows in our home and our first call will be to Willard Company!
