Michael McKenna Electric Inc

Electrical, Landscaping - Lighting

About us

I began my electrical profession at Don Bosco Electrical High School studying Electrical Theory and hands on the shop. After graduating in 1986, I received my Journeymans Electricians license in 1990 and my Masters Electricians License in 1992. Over 25 years in the field I have had experience with many types of wiring including like Old Work Residential, New Work Residential, Commercial, Industrial, Theatrical, and Arenas. The majority of my experience is with the older homes in the Greater Boston Area and Metro West with aging electrical systems needing upgrading and remodeling projects within. I do not use sub-contractors and I work alone on most projects which assures the highest quality. I do plan to hire and train an electrical apprentice from a local trade school. An initial service visit is $100 for the first hour including travel to the job and $75 per each additional hour. On smaller contract jobs a 50% deposit is required at start and 50% upon completion. On larger contract jobs, a 40% deposit is usually required to start. 30% is due upon completion of the rough-in and 30% due upon completion.

We had just moved into our first home and were doing numerous renovations when we called and interviewed Michael regarding electrical updates we wanted to have done. Michael was patient, courteous, and very informative as we went over our ideas. He installed numerous wall dimmers, lighting fixtures, and gfi plugs throughout our home but most impressive was the Renewaire unit he recommended and installed in the basement family room. It supplies fresh air intake into an area of our home in which we spend a lot of family time and we love the idea that it is now well ventilated and not musty or stale like a lot of basement areas tend to be. We felt very confident in Michael's work because he is a Master Electrician and has years of experience. He was always on time, worked quickly and very neat in his work. I would definitely hire Michael again for any electrical needs and recommend him to family and friends.
Description of Work: Installed a Renewaire unit in our family room in the basement plus installed new wall dimmers, light fixtures, ect. throughout our home.

Michael had previously spent several hours in our new home, discussing with us the well over a dozen projects we wanted completed. He was extremely thorough, answering all questions, making recommendations that would provide us with what we wanted at the best price point, telling us when ideas we had were either not feasible or not cost effective, and coming up with alternate options. He also came out on very short notice on one occasion when we realized that outlets needed relocating before a built-in bench could be installed. Michael is very efficient and conscientious. He is extremely neat and careful, making sure all newly painted surfaces, furniture, hardwood floors, etc. are protected. He has installed sconces, repaired and/or replaced low voltage fixtures and low voltage Leviton light switches. He also installed a very intricate European pendant light in our 20 ft. entryway. On two visits, it was raining, and there wasn't even a drop of water anywhere, even though he had to make several trips in and out of the house. Michael is extremely knowledgeable and up-to-date on current electrical codes, and does not take short cuts. We are absolutely thrilled with his attention to detail and work ethic. He doesn't waste a minute, just gets the job done, and does it the right way.
Description of Work: On his most recent visit, Michael replaced the existing ceiling lighting outlet in dining room with a sloped ceiling 6-inch recessed light with a par LED lamp. He replaced existing bulbs in the 3inch recessed lights with LED bulbs all in warm white. He removed all incandescent fixtures in basement and installed 10 4ft fluorescent strip fixtures. He provided all materials for the job. He also did a fair amount of research on the best option before special ordering the recessed light for our dining room.

On a Friday afternoon in September, 2013, I called Mike McKenna to see if he would replace a GFI outlet in my garage for me. I had kept a postcard/ad he had sent me because it was so professionally done and well-written. I thought I would call him when the next occasion arose. He came at the end of a long workday, after he had finished a job and gone home, and brought the new GFI plug with him. He was polite, was very nice about coming despite the short notice and the very small amount of work I needed, and was driving a clean truck, which is usually a good sign in my experience. We chatted while he removed the faulty GFI plug and installed the new one and he tested it to make sure I had power. I did. I happily wrote him a check for $130 which included labor and the part. His work was neat, thorough, and done correctly and I was impressed by Mike. He is a complete professional with both a Journeyman's license and a Master Electrician's license. And, he is fully insured. His postcard indicates that he is capable of doing all manner of electrical work - rewiring of older homes, stereo, audio and video installation, circuit breakers, update wiring, interior and exterior lighting, store fit-outs, store lighting, landscaping lighting, security systems, pools and spas, just to name some of the kinds of electrical work he is able to perform. He is involved in a total-house rehab near me on Village Avenue in Dedham but was willing to do my very small but necessary job within two hours of my called him. I highly recommend him and will definitely use him for any and all future electrical work. I am so glad I kept the card he had sent me a year ago! He's terrific. He lives in Dedham but does work in all surrounding areas including Brookline and Newton.

Our kitchen hadn't been updated since it was built in 1964. The original wiring was perhaps done in a bit of a hurry. Mike is meticulous and professional. He is knowledgable, thorough, hard working and doesn't take shortcuts. I feel very confident that we now have a safe, up to code, efficient, well-lit and working kitchen.
Description of Work: Wiring and installation of appliances and lighting fixtures for complete kitchen renovation.
