John Vespa Electrical Contractor LLC has more than 30 years of experience meeting the electrical needs of homeowners and businesses in Boston, MA. Family owned and operated, John Vespa Electrical Contractors provides all types of wiring, electrical service upgrades, lighting and outlet design, power outlets, generators, electrical repairs & misc. John Vespa Electrical Contractor LLC specializes in wiring solutions for older homes in the Boston, MA area. Cost is determined by the job.
Vespa's pricing estimate was fair being in the same ballpark as all other estimates. He reviewed the lighting plan and made a useful suggestion that added one more light in a kitchen area that improved the light output significantly. He showed up to perform the job when he said he would. He did the work as he said he would. The only change was a small amount of additional work due to a necessary ground for a low voltage light that he warned me may be the case far in advance. He performed the additional work as described at a fair price. The job came in at the budget agreed in the time agreed, no surprises, no mishaps. John and his crew were a pleasure to work with. All involved were very professional and polite. I would recommend him and use him again without hesitation
Description of Work: Installation of recessed lighting and wall switches in existing ceilings. Intallation of track lighting and new closet lighting.

I communicated with 3 electricians what I wanted to have done and Vespa's was the first to have availability to come and perform the work. Everything was well organized, I received a phone call when he was leaving and another one when he arrived here, he completed the inspection, explained his findings, etc. He answered my questions and also gave me an estimate for additional work I might have performed. He found some problems and also gave me advice on how to avoid being in this situation in the future. I was overall very pleased. He also uses e-mail which I find is a plus due to my busy schedule, which not all the electricians I worked with were fluent in.
Description of Work: Electrical inspection because I wanted to have insulation installed and active knob and tubing is supposedly a contraindication to the insulation contractors.

I contacted John Vespa Electric and my phone call was returned promptly. An estimate was set up for the following Friday. (Only do estimates on Friday). John showed up as planned and was in and out quickly. I received an estimate via email the next Monday. I was happy with the price so I set up an appointment. Two younger guys showed up, again on time- pretty good for the night after the Bruins win and got to work. They did a perfect, neat job with everything. One of the guys even put all the crystals on the chandelier, which I was expecting to do when they left. He also put the switchplates back on and I noticed that even the screws were all turned to match the same direction. Can you say attention to detail? These are things I notice, so I was really impressed to see how well the job was done. They cleaned up after themselves and grabbed me to show me everything before they left...job was priced as quoted. I would definitely hire again.
Description of Work: Installed an entry way and hallway light, installed a chandelier. (Already had the wiring in place, just replacing fixures) Installed dimmer switches in 3 rooms. Also, capped off an old live wire in the basement.

We are selling the unit in April and wanted to make sure that we would pass the fire alarm inspection. We were confused about the requirements and a handy-man had previously installed battery-powered fire and carbon-monoxide alarms alongside the hard-wired ones. John checked them all out, and after he told me that the battery-powered alarms were not necessary and might cause confusion at the inspection, I had him removed them.
Description of Work: John came out to check the smoke alarms inside our condominium for compliance.

Vespa Contracting was fantastic all around, from scheduling the visit, sending me confirmation calls, coming out on short notice, staying late to do the work so I didn't have to take another day off, performing the work quickly, explaining what he was doing, charging and excellent price for the time and effort he spent in our place. This company is superb all around, and I would definitely hire John again for any electrical work in my condo. Very professional, very efficient, very clean and very fair with price.

John Vespa kept a close eye on the job but his crew also took pride in theri work and we are very happy with what they have done.
Description of Work: We purchased an old house that according to the inspector needed some minor electrical improvements and possibly an upgrade in service to the house. John looked at the house and quickly realized that more was needed to make to the place safe. He went over the place carefully, listened to us and did just what was needed to provide the upgrades we wanted and those needed. His clear descriptions of why somethings were needed and not others made us very comfortable. He ended up installing fans, upgrading service into the house, replacing some wiring that was above a false ceiling and installing more outlets. He had an excellent crew, including his sons who were also very helpful. The painter working in the house at the same time noted that she had seldom worked with electricians who were so neat and who patched the holes they made. We were more than pleased with the work he did. Right now he is doing some work former residence in preparation for a sale. We had already painted this house and had the floors done before we became aware of need for electrical work. He and his crew are doing the job making with making minimal holes and doing just what is needed to make the house safe and attractive to a buyer.

John returned my call within 24 hours, and set up a convenient time. He was smart to advise me to buy my own light fixture because he knew I would like having control over how the fixture looked and the best way to do that was for me to buy it myself. He told me all the details I needed to know to ensure I bought the correct kind of fixture. He installed it and repaired my very old circuit box as well. The light fixture looks great and works perfectly. Thank you, John Vespa!

The fan is now working & that is wonderful. When he comes to fix the heater he will check the other fans. It went very very well. He was committed to see the job done and stayed with it, He was very professional and had to make some judgement calls that his experience allowed him to do. Everything worked out well. He cleaned up after himself using a professional vacuum. I plan to use him again in the near future.
Description of Work: He had to a**** the problem as to why my ceiling fan was not working. It only worked for 1/2 hour after another electricial installed it 2 years ago. He tested the remote and determined that the related piece in the fan was not working and could not be salvaged. He removed it and changed the mechanism to work by pull chain. He also noticed that there was no support for the fan other than the hung ceiling and so he moved and reinstallled it on a metal beam adding wood as extra support. My ceilings are 12.6 ft off the floor so it was difficult. He had to make a larger hole in the ceiling and then patch it up after. He also tested a heater (baseboard heater) & noticed one section of it no longer worked and also that they were iall mproperly installed.

Mr. Vespa arrived on time and was very thorough in his inspection of our home. I found him to be very professional and knowledgeable and he was willing to answer any questions I had about the electrical issues in the house. He provided me with a detailed quote within a short amount of time. Although I liked Mr. Vespa and genuinely felt he would do a good job on the project, his quote was significantly higher than all others we received. Also, he wanted us to remove all furniture from the second floor of our home during the renovations, which was not going to be an easy thing, as we would be living in the house at the time. As a result of the price and furniture issues, we went with another contractor for the job.

John Vespa (owner) showed up and did the work himself. He was professional, cleaned up, talked me through the issues and explained what he was doing. He also didn't charge the standard "Newton markup" that most other contractors in all categories apply. Extremely impressed - first time I've felt comfortable writing a glowing review, would highly recommend him!

In April I called John Vespa to get pricing information for installing ceiling fans, since they would not be replacing an existing light fixture the job would also include installing junction boxes in the ceiling and light switches on the wall. I received a call back from who gave me the pricing information. There was some initial confusion about the price, she initialing quoted me for 1 ceiling fan but then we realized the mistake and the price for the installation of 2 fans would be $800 for about 8 hours of work. I felt the price was fair so I inquired about scheduling the job. Unfortunately for me, John?s schedule was pretty solidly booked until mid June. John did call me to discuss the job and I asked him for ceiling fan recommendations. He said Hampton Bay and Hunter were good value fans and that he had Hampton Bay fans in his home. He said I could buy more expensive fans if I wanted too but didn?t think it was necessary. He said when I bought the fans I should call back and be put on a waiting list should a scheduled appointment cancel and he would try to schedule in my job. By the end of May I finally bought the two ceiling fans at Home Depot and called John to let them know I was ready. They were able to schedule my job for Thursday, June 17, 2010. He said they would arrive between 8:00 and 9:00 am to start the job. He called me that morning to let me know they were on their way. They did have a bit of GPS confusion, but they were pretty much on time and got straight to work. The team consisted of John and Dan, a younger electrician. I wasn?t sure where the living room/dining room fan should be located because if it was in the center of the rooms it would be the first thing you saw when you walked into the condo and I didn?t want that. So I asked John what he would do and he suggested centering it between the two air vents on the living room side of the rooms. That was the spot I was hoping he would suggest so I was very pleased. He also even suggested where to install the switch which was where I was hoping he would pick too. Great minds think alike. LOL They started first in the living room and John was at first concerned about encountering steel studs in the ceiling because he seemed to recall doing work in my condo building in the past. Fortunately, my condo is located on the top floor and the ceiling consisted of wood studs so there would not be a problem installing the new junction boxes. Once they got that job started, Dan worked in the bedroom to install that fan with John periodically checking his work and making suggestions. I hadn?t expected two electricians to come to such a small job but it would mean that the job would be completed in half the time. Both John and Dan were friendly, polite, professional and efficient. When they would make a trip to their truck to get something they would bring back equipment they no longer needed so that at the end of the job they didn?t have to make multiple trips to pack up when they left the job site. After a couple of hours, both ceiling fans were installed and John asked me to pick the fan setting I liked best because the fans had pull chains and no remote control. John asked me about the switch plate colors, my condo had all ivory switch plates which I didn?t like but they came with the place. I said I would rather have white switch plates (which would prompt me to replace all of the existing switch plates). John said that nowadays white is the color of most new construction. John had to make a trip to Home Depot to get a second switch plate (it was a 1 toggle with 2 horizontal toggle style) and take a lunch break so they took their break. When they returned, they finished up installing the switch plate covers and patching up the holes made in the ceiling to run the wires and once again vacuumed the floors. I got the fans just in time for summer and I?ve already been enjoying them!

Outdoor security light blew out - John recommended replacing the fixture as it was not functioning properly. The part that sold me on John was that the light blew out the whole circuit a week later - John came out and fixed the issue free of charge (it was a factory short not a problem with his installation). Honest and reasonable - two great qualities...
Description of Work: Outdoor security light blew out, blew out circuit after repair a week later.
