Description of Work: Based on a newspaper ad, we contacted Capizzi Home Improvement for an estimate. The representative said our project would cost $20,000 to $30,000. He asked for $500 to provide a detailed estimate. The estimate was for $80,000. I do not think he acted in good faith. Needless to say, we did not proceed with the home improvement.

I would like to apologize for any disconnect you may have experienced with our company. We take pride in providing our customers with detailed, written, and accurate proposals/estimates which detail exactly what is and is not included in our quote. As with any large purchase, there are many different ways to specify how a job will be done and the materials that will be used. Without being afforded the opportunity to sit down and review the materials and specifications detailed in each proposal, I cannot accurately explain the price differences. It is likely that our representative used more substantial material allowances and methods than the others you consulted; otherwise there would not be such a great cost difference. The bottom line is that the comparison is most likely far from apples to apples. Please accept my sincerest apology for any misunderstanding and/or dissatisfaction with the estimate you received. Bout our representative, who has been with us for fifteen years, and our entire company, hold ourselves to the highest standards and ethics in serving the local community. Sincerely, Thomas Capizzi, Jr., President, Capizzi Home Improvement

Description of Work: I was cold-called by what appeared to be a handyman service and, since I had a few small projects to be done, I agreed to getting an estimate from them. Tony, Capizzi's estimator, arrived promptly at the designated time, looked at the projects, proceeded to explain that, in fact, they were a large company, giving more details than I wanted to know about the company's hierarchical structure and division of labor. He then gave me an estimate that seemed to me unreasonable for the amount of work to be done. I pointed that out and he proceeded with his pitch, telling me that if I signed the contract at that moment I could get 10% discount. He was persistant, even when I asked him to stop. I do not appreciate high pressure sales and that was what this was. I will not do business with this company.

SEE ABOVE STATEMENT !
Description of Work: The task was to design and contract Capizzi to create a finished basement in a seven year old home. The salesman was slick and ready to get you to sign a contract. The contract was not upheld on their part due to the following issues: 1. Capizzi did not do any of the work....they hire subcontractors and then do not make sure the materials being used are the ones contracted for by the client. i.e. lighting, wallboard, trim. 2. After we kicked them out of the house on two separate occasions we were the ones who physically had to do the insulation installation, the trim, the painting, the finished carpentry. The ledger shelf they put up had fallen apart. The plaster from the wallboard seams has fallen off the ceiling. They never finished the opening left in the wall for the gas fireplace to be installed. Some of the wallboard has cracked at the seam lines. We also have a double oak French doors that won't close. 3. When we contacted the foreman on the job (Gary) he said it would cost extra to finish the job and kept trying to get us to sign up to do the other part of the basement. They even sent out the wrong pot lights. The ones they sent were old and looked as though they were reclaimed from another job. The electricians cut the wires to the security system and left us for days without a security system and fire/smoke detectors. 4. As far as we are concerned, we would never hire them to put together a cardboard box. 5. Fair warning.....get everything in writing....even model numbers of electrical fixtures, manufacturers and specs for nails, wiring.......and make sure who is doing the actual work!!!!

They seemed a little expensive. Someone else might think that for what they do they are great. They came to our house six times and went over drawings and ended up paying them $600. We did not end up using them. The information they gave us ultimately helped us decide what we wanted to do. For what they did it was a wonderful job. They only drawback was that they seemed to want to give us more than we asked them for.
Description of Work: We were going to have our house remodeled to suit us.

This is a follow-up to my report from October 26, 2011. All work was completed before Thanksgiving. The roofing crew (Dmitri and gang) did a terrific job. They were in and out in one day and cleaned up almost every piece of scrap (there was a lot!). They adequately performed all necessary repairs to the rake, installed a soffit ventilation system, drip edges, etc. And the new roof looks great. A+ The bay window and storm door were installed by Tom and his helpers. Again this was a top notch job. They did encounter some unforeseen challenges which added to the length of the project, but they did a professional and thorough job. We are very happy with this part of the overall project. A+ The chimney and hearth work were the only areas with which we had issues. First, the masons showed up without warning. This was an issue as there was inside work to be done (hearth) and I was not planning on staying home. I was literally heading out the door when they arrived. Regarding the hearth, this was a component of the job that I had mentioned to the project consultant (Jake) after the chimney work had been agreed to. I was later assured by the project consultant that the mason (a different Tom) was aware of the additional work, but when he arrived to do the chimney work the mason claimed ignorance regarding the hearth. Nevertheless he took care of the hearth and did a fine job, allowing me to leave for my errands albeit 45 minutes late. The masons were working on the chimney when I left. When I returned several hours later the masons were gone. A visual inspection of the chimney revealed that the flashing work had been done and some bricks had been replaced/repaired and re-mortared. There were, however, still several broken/cracked bricks as well as some cracked and chipped mortar. Some unused mortar had fallen onto an angled part of the chimney and not been cleaned up. Also, it was not obvious that the sealant had been applied, though I understand this is not readily apparent to an untrained eye. The entire chimney had not been re-pointed and some missing/cracked bricks had not been replaced as per the agreement. I assumed the mason would be back to finish the job, but was later informed that all chimney work had been completed during that first visit. Subsequent discussions with those involved revealed miscommunication between the project consultant and the mason. The project consultant and mason returned together to discuss the misunderstanding. At that time, the mason cleaned up the unused mortar and repaired some chipped mortar that he claimed he did not see during his prior visit. I was informed that despite the signed agreement stating the entire chimney would be repointed and all broken/cracked bricks would be replaced, this work could not be done for the agreed upon price. The project consultant explained that he misunderstood the amount of work the mason would be doing when he put together the work agreement. My position was that I would not have agreed to that small amount of chimney work being done for that price ($1200). Ultimately a meeting was set up with myself, the project consultant, and the company owner (Tom Capizzi). It was quite obvious to me during the meeting that Tom C. wanted me to pay the full agreed upon price. He explained that their margins were very small in this business and my price had already been discounted (the $1200 was after a discount advertised by Capizzi). I was sympathetic, but reiterated that I would have never agreed to have so little work being done for that price. Ultimately we agreed on a reduced price of $995. However, we were not quite done. After we agreed on the reduced price, they presented me with a bill ($367) for additional work and materials needed when the bay window was installed. Though I was not expecting this, it was obvious that more time and materials had been necessary to complete that part of the overall job. So I wrote them a check . I'll leave it to the reader to judge the appropriateness of presenting the bill at that time. Based on my experiences, I can strongly recommend Capizzi Home Improvement for roofing, windows, and doors. If this had been the extent of my experiences with them, I would happily rate them A+ across the board. However, because of my experiences outlined above, I cannot recommend them for masonry work.
Description of Work: Services performed included: Roof: stripping old roof, repairing rotted rakes, install new roof and soffit panels ($6142) Bay window: demo and dispose of existing window, install solid vinyl bay window, install new trim, replace necessary siding and drywall ($4140) Storm door: remove and dispose of old door, install new door, re-caulk ($536) Chimney: re-point chimney, replace cracked/missing bricks, demo/dispose/replace flashing, seal chimney, repair inside hearth ($1367)

I have used them for years. The price would have seemed very high but it was complicated. They had an electrician, a foreman and two carpenters working for most of the day. They are pricey. When I get bids, I end up going with them anyways because they are so reliable and do such good work. I was not exactly happy with how level it and they came back the next day and corrected it. There was no problem. I had them to do many other things also. In terms of price, they are expensive but they do provide quality work. I would use them in the future if needed.
Description of Work: I used Capizzi Home Improvement in put in a microwave but in doing so, they had to actually straighten about four kitchen cabinets, in order to get the microwave to sit above the range of all the other cabinets. The cabinets were not plumb and they actually had to loosen all the cabinets and straighten them up before they could put the microwave in. Then they also had to put in a dedicated electric line for the microwave. It was much more involved than just putting up a microwave.

All in all it was a very positive experience. The carpenters were just terrific, They really knew their craft and were very conscientious about cleaning up at the end of each day. The sub contractors were also very good. The whole process was completed within six weeks. We are very happy with the results.
Description of Work: The job involved a full kitchen remodel including window replacement, new cabinets and countertops, upgraded lighting, refinished wood floors, and painting.

Overall, it was fine and very nice. We had used him for a couple of small projects. All the three works came out fine. They gave us an estimate for the kitchen work, but we didn't go with them in the end. They were fine all through the negotiation process. They were on time. They did a good job. Their prices are higher. Their professionalism is great. I would recommend others to get their pricing and get other estimates; but also negotiate with them on the price. They are more expensive than the average price for the same work. They knew what they were doing. Their quality is excellent. They were good. The design work was great, and people who worked were good. They were co-operative and pleasant.

Description of Work: I called Capizzi to get an estimate for replacing all of our upstairs windows (eight in all). The receptionist who took my initial call was extremely helpful and friendly and set up a time for someone to come to the house. The representative who came to the house twice, Jake Laurie, was very punctual, professional, knowledgable, and helpful. Although we ultimately went with another individual, I would certainly recommend Capizzi to anyone looking for repairs or remodeling work.

I had an excellent response to an inquiry regarding installation of a bay window and replacing a storm door. Their representative was prompt, courteous, and thorough. Return trips to discuss cost and to review the work agreement were equally professional and complete. A subsequent roof issue led to another inquiry and equally professional visits. Capizzi will now also be installing a new roof and doing chimney repairs. Both jobs (window/door and roof/chimney) required approval of the local Historic Commission. All of the necessary paper work and meeting(s) attendance was handled by Capizzi. Window & door job originally estimated to be done in mid-October, but I suggested they could wait and do that job at the same time as the roof & chimney. I expect the work to be done before the end of November.
Description of Work: Work not yet completed. I will update upon completion. Work will include a new roof, installation of bay window, storm door replacement, and chimney repairs.

Very effiicent, the Carpenter cleaned up after his work was done and was very professional and curtious and showed me and discussed with me options, especially when it came to the post rot on the deck, Also he advised me of products to use to do my own repairs on the railings. prior to repainting.
Description of Work: I had sufficient wood rot around 2 windows and the eves of the family room. Also had some wood rot on a post on my deck. They sent out a carpenter that replaced the wood with primed on both sides wood and also covered the nail heads. The post was completely removed and a new post built and put in place with an raised area for the water to run off so future rot would not occur again and used a treated post. Only waiting now for them to come in and sand my porch deck so i can winterize an put a proper stain on.
