We've used Hancock before to remodel our backyard patio/hot tub/outdoor living space as well as to remodel our basement and add a new bathroom down there. You cannot find a more reliable builder--the construction teams are extremely competent, professional and pleasant to work with, and the quality of Hancock's work is unmatched locally. The vendors and subcontractors we've used in conjunction with this project all highly endorse working with Hancock which makes our experience all the better. We have gone through this phase of remodel through awful weather but everyone is toughing it out and working hard to keep things on track. Darrell is without question one of the smartest, seasoned construction company owners around. Whatever he commits the company to do--they do it. I found Hancock on Angies List three years ago and it was one of the best connections we've ever made!
Description of Work: This is Phase II of a Phase IV remodel of our modest ranch home. This is an addition of a master bedroom and master bathroom suite also converting a smaller bedroom into the entrance and walk-in closet space for the master suite. We're also doing an update to the current main bathroom and addition of walk-in closets to current bedrooms as part of this project.

The only reason we did not select Hancock is that our project is being funded by an insurance claim and the estimate was quite a bit beyond what insurance would be willing to reimburse.
Description of Work: Hancock provided an estimate for a rebuild to be done on our living room, kitchen and bathroom. Darrell came to my home to provide an estimate. He was extremely professional, punctual and knowledgeable.

It went well. The sub-contractor that did some of the work, when Darryl came out and looked at it, he said that some of it was not acceptable and made them take it out and redo it. Darrel the head guy was really good, did a good job and they could have cleaned up better in some places. I found Darryl really easy to work with. The price was really reasonable.
Description of Work: Hancock Building Associates Incorporated did general remodeling, waterproofed the basement and did a lot of repair stuff around the house. They did some electrical work and painted the exterior of the house and some of the inside.

The service is going great. Darrell is a very professional general contractor. Proficient, knowledgeable, and courteous. When one of his subcontractors left equipment on our neighbor's lawn, he went out of his way to apologize to them for the inconvenience which was very generous.

Darrell was on time to check out work to be performed, helpful suggestions on a few items that we were still up in the air about. His crew showed up on time, did great work. We had some unexpected bad weather, subzero temps and snow storm with over 24" of snow. Yet this didn't stop his crew. Excellent job cleaning up after themselves every day and when the job was completed. Overall we were very happy with the work Darrell and his crew performed. After experiencing many no shows for estimates, no call backs and companies coming out to take a look at the work we wanted and never getting back to us one way or another, this was a painless experience. We highly recommend Hancock Building Associates. Definitely would use them again.
Description of Work: Work included stripping off old roof. Building a wrap around farmers porch 62x8 in total length. Replacing all facias and soffits through out the entire house. Re-roof house and porch.

We had a very large window with crank outs that did not function well. We had new windows installed throughout the house a few years prior. The only window not replaced was the upstairs bathroom. It was old and dated and did not look well with the newer windows. Darrell came for a consultation and designed a new window that would complement the existing windows. We had three contractors quote the job, we chose Hancock. The price was competitive and Darrell knew exactly what we wanted. They did a great job start to finish. The only negative was the start date as they were delayed by rain. I would use them again.
Description of Work: Hancock removed old windows in an upstairs bathroom. They then installed a new window and repaired the drywall on the interior and the siding on the exterior.

It went okay overall. Things we really liked (in no particular order): 1. Fit a relatively-small remodeling project into their busy season. This was much appreciated, because we had already been turned away by a couple of other contractors, who cited they wouldn't take on such a small job until the winter months. 2. Made us feel at ease. Darrell McCrensky had a sense of what we needed because he told us he had recently done a similar project in his own home. He assured us the plasterer was someone who had worked with him for many years and would do a great job. 3. Quality of the plaster and baseboard work. Their plasterer removed a closet door and made it a smooth, seamless wall. They replaced a small section of a larger baseboard and made that look seamless, as well. 4. Prompt in their replies. Darrell checked email (our preferred communication method) and responded relatively promptly. Much appreciated. 5. Looking at our home improvements through a long-term lens. My wife and I REALLY appreciate this. We're considering other projects and Darrell is helping us to shape the strategy in a way which makes the most long-term sense for our home and needs. Things which could be improved upon: 1. Helping us understand our materials options. It wasn't until the day-of the closet build, when I was in a hurry to leave for work, that we were asked which materials we would like the closet built from. My wife and I take part of the responsibility for this, as we probably should have done more research in advance of the project, but it led to a hasty decision. We went with melamine, because Darrell suggested it was easiest to clean, but upon looking at it in our closet I think we were hoping for a more-finished, polished, and clean look. (the melamine has a few small chips in it, from when it was cut) Again, I don't fault Hancock entirely on this, as they were doing us a favor by fitting this work into their schedule, but looking back we would like to have seen examples of our options, so we could have made a more-informed decision. For example, about a year and a half ago we had a new roof installed. Prior to having the roof installed our contractor showed us examples of the different roofing options available to us. Those examples actually helped change our mind on what we thought we wanted installed and now we're really happy with the roof we chose. 2. Shelving a little small for our needs. The work including adding some box-style shelves, but they're just a smidge (probably less than a quarter inch) too narrow to fit things like folded sweaters and shorts. Just a tiny bit wider would have meant we wouldn't have to adjust the way we fold clothes to fit the shelves. A shoe rack installed at the bottom of the closet also doesn't fit my size 10 shoes (the tips of the shoes hang over the edge). I guess we assumed they would know standard measurements which would fit most shoes. 3. A little sloppiness. There were a couple of holes in the caulking, some paint drips on the shelves, and some places where paint and plaster dust were left on the shelving. This meant I had to take some time cleaning the shelves, after the work was complete. The reason we paid for a contractor, instead of doing the work ourselves, and the reason we chose Hancock is for quality of work. I think we expected perfection, in return for coughing up $3,000 to renovate a closet. One final note: Keep in mind the "points of improvement" above, I think are fixable items and our project was fit into an otherwise-busy schedule. Our impression was the laborers used for this job were pulled, temporarily, from other, larger jobs. Hancock does some beautiful work, based on what we've seen from their Web site, and we're confident they'll do the same quality of work on other projects we have in mind. We're already discussing with Darrell a decking project and really appreciate his approach to it (he helped us take a step back and address another, greater need for our home, before the decking project could be done). We trust Darrell and think the items above could be solved by just communicating a little better.
Description of Work: Remodeled a closet. Closed off one of two doors to the closet (sealed it with plaster) , installed shelving, clothing racks, and baseboards. Installed a light and light switch.

My experience of the quote process with Hancock Building Associates Inc. Company was fine. It wasn’t their fault that the project kind of fell apart. They gave me a very professional and well written estimate. It had all the information one would need. I would contact them in the future if required.

Professional and honest. There were no significant issues. They worked with us to stay within budget, and offered helpful suggestions. In general the work was excellent quality, however a few details (slab floor flatness, finish on some exterior trim) could have been better. If I had noticed these at the time I'm sure they would have corrected them. The addition has held up well over the past 10 years.

I felt like I was being up sold. I told them I wanted six new windows put in. They were pushing me to replace all of our existing windows. He told me he wanted me to take advantage of the tax credit. We had an energy audit recently and they told me the windows were great. They did not give me confidence in Hancock. I was dealing with a salesman. I felt like he was looking for ways to sell me more. They came out with a pretty high price. When we got it we said we would not get the work done after all. We got several estimates. They were on the higher end.

We have undergone two previous extensive construction projects, and this was by far the smoothest, least stressful and most professionally executed. Darrell was extremely good at accommodating our ideas and requirements for the project, while at the same time guiding us to good decisions when we were unsure or off-base. We did not use an architect, so the design process was based on our concept, modified by Darrell's engineering knowledge. He was in constant communication with us, when not in person then by phone or email (often many times a day!) One of the highlights of the project was the efficiency with which the different specialty crews were cycled in and out of the project. Darrell has a very firm working relationship with his workers, and a clear timeline for executing each phase of the project. In addition, we were pleased to find that many of these employees were highly dedicated and skilled craftsmen who often went several steps beyond our expectations of quality. There was never the sense that any task had been rushed or skimped on, and there was never a time when the work went into suspended animation. There were many instances when we were actually sad to see a crew complete their work and go! Construction is notoriously nerve-wracking, but working in tandem with Hancock we felt that the project was always under control, executed with high quality, and that our approval was the guiding force behind all the work that was done.
Description of Work: Hancock Building Associates created an expansive master suite above an existing garage. We took 3 bids and theirs was the lowest (significantly), but during the estimate/evaluation process it was clear that they were taking all of the potential construction challenges into careful consideration, so we were confident that quality was not at stake. The project required initial approval from two town boards, and Darrell McCrensky (co-owner of the company) spent many hours preparing our case to present to the town. The project also required some tricky engineering to seamlessly connect the new space with the existing one (floor levels and roof lines), as well as some creative plumbing solutions, and all this was achieved with a calm and confident approach that eased our fears. We also had aesthetic considerations and financial constraints that were respectfully taken into account. The final product has exceeded our expectations in every way.
