1. The final invoice was 40 % over the initial estimate, yet we did not add any additional scope to the job and there were no serious unknowns that came up. We were not informed of this increase in cost until we received the final bill. 2. The job was estimated to take about 2 weeks of time; it took over 6 months. . 3. Phone calls and emails we made to the company were not acknowledged or replied to for weeks (or completely ignored). 4. The door that we were to have installed was significantly more expensive than the estimate but we were not notified of this until after it had been installed. If we had been told of the actual cost we would have chosen a more reasonably priced one! In addition, we discovered that the door had arrived at the building company in October yet it was not installed until February. 5. The inside trim around the door frame was incorrectly installed and did not match the existing trim. Donovan would have charged us to replace it so we had to remove the incorrect trim ourselves, re-install and stain to to match existing trim. 6. The trim around the skylight was incorrectly installed --the slot for the screen was too narrow so we had to modify the screen ourselves in order for it to fit in the slot. I have restored three previous homes and I have never had such a frustrating experience! Not only was customer service and communication appalling but the information we did receive was usually incomplete or incorrect. The only positive was the office manager who began communicating with us in late January (about 2 weeks before the job was finally finished). She was very apologetic and admitted that they had taken on too much work, but there was never any offer of discounting the final bill or anything else that might have made us feel a little less ripped off.
