Winter came and I was sure to keep a close watch on the area where the new septic system was installed. Snow covered the ground for most of the winter season. As the snow began to melt, it melted in a perfect circle around the exact spot where the new septic had been installed. The ground above where the tank had been installed, had begun sinking. I made numerous phone calls to Jeff Thomas throughout the winter, as I continued to try and chase down a contract and a receipt and to address the new problem at hand. April arrived, the snow had completely melted and I could clearly see that the property was not the same prior to Thomas Bros. Inc. beginning the job. Because I still was not receiving any returned phone calls from Jeff Thomas, I visited the Health Department to seek out advice on the stuation. They suggested that I try calling Jeff again even though I explained how I had already done so a few times. They urged me to try one more time and so I did. I was able to speak to Jeff and he agreed to meet me on the property to look at and discuss the stuation. When the meeting took place, he agreed that there was a problem. I also asked him where the septic tank access cover was because he never installed one. He told me he would fix the problem and bring the cover to the surface. Five weeks later I called him and had to leave another message. I asked when he had planned on fixing the property based on our previous meeting regarding the matter at hand. He called and left a message stating that he had mulled things over in his head and had decided that the property was fine as is and he was not going to fix anything. I then tried contacting him several times. He returned a call and told me that he would draft a letter explaining his reasoning. I still have not received a letter to date. I went back to the Health Department to file a complaint. Personnel tried to convince me not to file a complaint but I did so anyway. The Health Department sent an officer to my property, who then filed a report and stated that the property looked low. After many non-returned phone calls by Jeff, I again contacted the Health Department and stated that I was then going to speak with the selectmen because I was not getting any help with my complaint. At this point the Health Department agreed to facilitate a meeting between Jeff Thomas and myself. Mr. Thomas cancelled the first meeting but did show for the second rescheduled meeting. At this meeting Mr. Thomas stated, "I got nothing to say." I then spoke with the Health Officer with Jeff present and I commented on Jeff's sub standard job and his business ethics. The Health Officer told that she ddn't care about his business ethics. The meeting ended with words being exchanged and yet here it is a year and a half later, the property is still low, still no receipt or contract has ever been produced and most importantly still no septic cover location has ever been marked. This has easily been the worst contractor experience I have had in my 17 years of being a home owner. Therefore, all prospective septic tank buyers, when you are in the process of selectiing a septic tank installer, I recommend that you NOT choose Thomas Bros. Inc. Save yourself some aggrevation and frustration. Thank you for taking the time to read this and hopefully this helps you in your selection process. -John Houlihan
Description of Work: For all future septic system installation consumers, I would like to take the time to inform you of my most recent experience with Thomas Bros. Inc. During the process of choosing an installer, Jeff, the owner of the company was very easy to get a hold of. Upon verbal agreement to complete the job, he was paid half the cost of the job. On many occasions a written receipt/contract was asked for by me and my wife, but neither document was ever produced by the contractor. Jeff began the job on a day that neither homeowner was present. In prior conversations before the start of the job, Jeff had acknowledged the quality of fill in the yard. He unearthed the old septic system and removed the soil and fill from the property without my consent. When I arrived home and realized that the fill had been removed I asked why he had taken it off of the property. Jeff stated that he needed room to work in order to install the new system. I am still to this day confused by this action Jeff took upon himself to do because I have close to two acres of open land that Jeff could have easily piled the fill on and I could have used it in other parts of my yeard to level off the terrain. One of the days following the completetion of the job we experienced heavy rains. My basement experieced new leaking. I tried on numerous occasions to reach Jeff regarding the stuation. Jeff came to the house to fix the situation without returning my call first. My wife expressed a feeling of uneasiness at his presence knowing that I had tried to reach him by phone ad because I was the one that hired him to do the job. She asked him to come back at a time when I was at home. When he and I finally spoke he agreed to put back the raised flower bed garden that there was prior to the start of the job. This was to prevent a barrier for the rainwater flow. After the raised flower bed was replaced Jeff Thomas wanted his remaining balance that was still owed to him. I was not comfortable paying in full as of yet because it was mid July at this point and my yard had to be reseeded. Jeff recommended spreading seed in September since it would be costly to water every day during the peak of the summer. He agreed to come back in September to York rake the yard to get rid of the weeds. At this point I asked Jeff how much loam he had spread because he had had this conversation with my wife rather than with me and this was the second time he approached my wife regarding the job, when I was the one that clearly hired him and was overseeing the project. I told him that I did not feel that the yard was left as it was before. Jeff absolutely defended that he brought in the same amount of loam to replace the fill that had been removed and said that he had packed the loam down really well with his machine. He stated that we had been friends for 30 years, played ball together for many years and that he lived right next door presently, and then he assured me that if that there were any problems, he would fix them and he would also drop off a receipt tomorrow. I took his word and paid him in full.
