The owner of the company was very responsive and he came out right away and did inspections of what type of roof we had. They were very helpful and gave me a quick estimate and they did the job as they had promised. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I would rate them high overall. Their price was little expensive but when considering about the circumstances that there was only little space to put a ladder to work, the price was fair. I would use them again in the future if needed.
Description of Work: I used Capital Construction for roofing and chimney caps. The last time I used them was in April this year. They put molding around the skylight and they also installed chimney caps.

I found Capital Construction on Angie's List 2 years ago, and David & his crew did a great job then. (I still had leaks in my attic around the 2 chimneys back in 2009/2010, and David would come out repeatedly at my request to try and remedy the situation, honoring his guarantee. He always had a good attitude about it all. It turned out it was a masonry issue not a roof issue and once I had the chimneys re-pointed and Dave did his work this year - no problem!) Of course I knew that after this hard winter he would be in demand so I emailed him in early February and requested to be put on his schedule as soon as the threat of snow had passed. His crew did a fine job this time around as well. They also had no problem accommodating more work as the job grew due to more repairs that were necessary than first thought. He always made sure to go over what was being done and to make sure I approved it all. hey also made sure to clean up after cleaning out the gutters, not leaving the mess around the house on the ground.
Description of Work: We needed our slate roof repaired after the hard winter, Our gutters had broken away due to ice dams, leaks in the attic. We needed all new gutters on our barn. Gutters needed cleaning & sealing.

We got small water stain and a small crack on the ceiling of our master bedroom. We called two roofers to do the estimate. The first roofer showed up on time and inspected the roof and chimney from the GROUND .Then Dave or David from Capital Construction came and actually got up our roof. He inspected our entire roof and explained in detailed about the leaking problem and how his crew will do to solve the problem. They provided exceptional service, were very professional, punctual and cleaning everything up on the day of repair. David send us a email on 2/21 to follow up on the leaking repair project. We told him that there may be still a leaking issue because we saw a little more water stain on the ceiling since the repair. Dave came again on 3/4 and did a full chimney inspection,re-sealed around the chimney and added additional lead counter flashing. We had a very nice experience with them toward our chimney repairs. The whole team were professional, punctual, personal and polite. We will hire them again in a heart beat.
Description of Work: install a stainless chimney cap inspect and repair all lead flashing apply masonry clear seal to existing brickwork on chimney

Overall we are extremely happy with the job. Capital found the windows we wanted that met standards for the 2010 tax break and were overall high quality windows at a very reasonable price. The came on time and finished the project exactly when they said they would. The were courtious and professional during the job. The cleaned up everything (inside and outside) perfectly. They repainted the window trim to fix any scuffs. They even re-hung our blinds (they would not fit in the same brackets because they are a different type of window) without our asking. They did a quality job on the installation and we are very happy with the result. Overall this project was absolutely no hassle on our end and we are extremely pleased with the result. We also feel the price was reasonable.
Description of Work: We have had several interactions with David and Capital Constructions and they have all been excellent. In general they have always been professional, accomodating, helpful, and have provided very reasonable estimates. This specific review is with regard to replacement windows. We had Capital Construction replace 7 windows in our Condo this December.

I contacted 3 roofers and chose Capital Construction due to the no-nonsense manner in which the inspection and quote was rendered, their location and work within my local community, and their fair pricing. David Arrowsmith and one of his foremen performed the estimate and I was impressed by David's conscientiousness. For instance, he cautioned against certain adjustments to the gutters so as not to create a hazard for my neighbors (one of the other contractors was oblivious to this). Capital Const. offered a reasonable discount to undertake the two projects together, but I got the impression that their price was already reasonably set. They were scheduled to start work on Monday, Nov. 8th, but inclement weather set in and they weren't able to start until Thursday, Nov. 11th. I was glad they did not attempt to work until it was safe and clear to do so. On the 11th they stripped all the siding and roofing off, which created huge piles along the perimeter of the house, but by the end of the day they'd cleaned and carted away everything. I bought the crew lunch on Thursday and Friday and we ate together in my kitchen. One or two of the guys were locals (my new neighbors), and others were from Ireland living locally, or from elsewhere. They were all very friendly and polite; I got the sense that they worked hard for an honest day's pay. The continued the work on Saturday, Nov. 13th and then recommenced on Monday. They'd more or less finished by mid week, but there was still some finishing work to be completed by the painter on the rear side. While working on the rear side window trimming (this was also part of the contracted work) they had offered to perform some touch-ups on the rear siding where some gaps were found; to fill them in and paint them. This last part took some time to complete, about two weeks in fact. The painter had left his ladder and paint cans in the back yard in the meantime, which I was not too happy about. I had to follow up on Nov.27th to make sure the job would be finished. The painter eventually did come back the week of the 30th, but a side vent was not inspected/secured as requested. This was finally done on the 8th of December, but he left his paint cans and caulking behind (hidden behind my Adirondack Chair). I did not report this to David Arrowsmith, the owner, because I did not find them until much later and thought perhaps I might need the paint for one reason or another in the future. There were times initially, before the project began, when I thought David could have been more communicative/responsive, but as the project began I heard from him regularly. Initially we'd communicated via e-mail, which I thought was very convenient, but once the project began, David and I kept in touch mostly via SMS text messaging on our mobile phones. This was also very convenient. I gave Capital Construction B grades on responsiveness for the few times where I felt I had to chase them for an update, but I only felt this way before the project started and at the end. I also gave them a B for punctuality, which is because despite their kindness offering to touch up the rear siding, it took too long to finish and the paint cans were left behind. Overall, though, I was very pleased with their service and workmanship and would use them again as well as recommend them to others.
Description of Work: I bought the house in June of this year and the home inspector said the roof needed replacement. The house also needed siding to match the front and rear, which were done in hardy board versus the sides which were asphalt shingle. Here are the itemized lists from the proposals: ROOF REPLACEMENT 100% ------------------------------------------ • All shingles to be completely stripped to the roof deck 100% • Comprehensive inspection of roof deck, damaged boards to be replaced, re-nail all roof boards. • Plywood to be installed over old chimney area / Damaged fascia to be repaired • Ice & water shield to be applied at all step flashing, perimeter, pipe and louver vent locations • 15 lb roofing paper to be installed at all other areas • 8" White aluminum drip edge will be applied to the perimeter of building /new pipe boot & two new louver roof vents to be installed • 30 year Tamko architectural shingles will then be nailed to roof (All shingles to be storm nailed) • Gutters to be completely cleaned, minor repairs to be completed, downspouts to be moved at both rear locations • New Cobra ridge vent system to be installed • All flashings to be carried out to manufacturers specifications • All debris to be removed by contractor, 15 yard dumpster supplied by Capital Construction • Magnetic cleanup daily at 4 PM SIDING ---------- • Installation of pump staging system • Existing asphalt siding to be completely removed from specified areas ( Right & left sides) • New pine to be installed • Tyvek to be applied to all areas • Installation of new hardy board siding • Rotten trim on rear windows (x9) to be replaced • All flashings to be carried out to manufacturers specifications • All debris to be removed by contractor • Magnetic cleanup daily at 4 PM For the siding they used the same Hardy boards as existed on the front and back to ensure they blended nicely. They did not use Tyvek home wrap, but another "green" manufacturer which I was told conformed to the Hardy board specifications/requirements. It looked like an equivalent material.

Capital Construction came over and finished the job in a week. They left the place clean and did a good job w/ all the repairs. The copper flashing work was very detailed and I've seen quite a few of them since we've had these gutters replaced by a few crappy contractors. For the guys who said they didn't get calls returned, they do get busy...if you call and leave a message about what you need done and when they would be free, I'm sure Dave would get back to you.
Description of Work: Replaced rear gutters and shingles. Reinforced roof deck. Redid rubber roof of an overhang that another contractor didn't bother tucking under shingles so it leaked.

I interviewed 5-6 masons, roofers and combo contractors for this job, and got estimates that ranged from $3k to $30k. Dave's was around $9k for patching roof, continuing roof membrane up back or parapet and some flashing and re-pointing on front. Having collected expert opinions from so many contractors, I had decided that Dave's was the best combo of creative problem solving for a budget and basic "do it the right way, even if its a bit extra". We signed a contract, and then within the first day of the job, Dave's job foreman showed me some problems they were having- specifically that the old roof membrane had been painted with difficult to remove paint. No solvents did a good job, but ironically, the rubber patch glue they were using pulled the paint right off. I spoke to Dave the next day, and he said they could continue as planned, but would have to reduce the warranty or they could put a whole new layer of rubber on and double the warranty, but I would have to pay for it. I was pretty upset, as this indicated a rather casual inspection of the job in quoting and the quote was one of the deciding factors. I do not condemn Dave for this too much, as I have come across this with numerous other contractors. It seems to be almost par for the course. But that only excuses the behavior so much. That the roof had been painted white, and was not in fact a white rubber membrane (as I have seen on other buildings) was news to me also, and was another example of weird practices by the prior roofers. I had a long talk with him about it, the kind that can lead to hot tempers and hard to reconcile arguments, but he remained relaxed and considerate. Having had otherwise good dealings (see last sentence) with Dave, and short of his casual inspection, I saw lots of evidence that he knew what he was doing, and was easy to talk to and deal with. His budget was still under that of the other quotes I had collected as well, so I gave them the ok to redo the roof with a new membrane (new budget $16k) and his crew proceeded. They worked hard and consistently in very hot summer weather. When the job was done, Dave came out to review, we made a punch list, and he took care of everything on the list without an argument. To date (3 months out) the roof is doing wonderfully, and the leaks have stopped. I like the work we got from Dave. The casual pre-quote inspection issue is why I have given Capital Construction the B for professionalism. But in all other ways, they were a pleasure to deal with (hence the A's). If you want a good masonry/roofing contractor, give him a chance, but as with any contractor, get AS MUCH info as you can up front and understand as CLEARLY as possible what unexpected outcomes might lead to. I would absolutely consider hiring him again, but would be extra careful in the quoting process. For example, ask for guarantees and what if scenarios.
Description of Work: original request: to address leaks in one story flat-roofed brick building with disintegrating masonry and parapet, and potentially faulty roof job (less than 10 years old). Work done: -replace rubber roof, back the inside of parapet with plywood, run roof membrane over ply. -cap/flash parapet -install lead flashing in masonry -minor repointing

Dear Angies member, Thanks for the A report, Unfortunately the prior roofing contractor you hired had used a masonry paint on your existing rubber roof , This was the major problem during the initial project, It is very very seldom that a project runs above the estimate but unfortunately on occasion it happens. Now that the new roof is completely installed you are finally leak free.. Thanks again for choosing Capital Construction.

After I posted David did email me to let me know that he did send me an estimate about 2-3weeks earlier -- he told me to look in my spam box -- I did not find it but than I have alot of spam there so I did not care but he also sent along the estitmate again -- so that help -- I will review and see what the other company give me for estimates and make may decisions than
Description of Work: I first email back in July about getting the gutter replace/repair and the building repointed -- got back an email right away saying that they would be over in the next week to look at the job -- no came so I email again -- this time David said he was real busy and was sorry that they did not get back to me earlier -- when he finally came by he said that he would have his roofer guy come by to take a look at the gutter and he would give me a estimate -- so far no estimate -- I know that there might be alot of work and they are busy but I why is it that people can not just say they are too busy and to look elsewhere -- I called them because I figure it would be better to have one company to all the work than two company -- but I guess that is the way to go ---

Dave and his crew were very user friendly, and very responsive to our needs. We have a number of fragile foundation plantings, and they took great pains to make sure that they were protected. The job took a week - Dave is a tough taskmaster with his crew, and bends over backwards to make sure that everything is done to his exacting standards. He was at our house for most of the first day supervising the set-up, and didn't leave until he was satisfied. After the job was done, we had a couple of downspout overflows, and he sent a couple of guys over within a day to clean out a small amount of debris which was causing the problem - this was AFTER we had paid him - I thought that was impressive. The whole experience was very professional and very positive. We would definitely use this company again.
Description of Work: We have a three story 110 year old Victorian house. Dave and his crew stripped 2 layers off the front of the roof and replaced it with 30 year architectural shingles. They installed ice and water shield to the valleys, vents, pipes and chimneys. They added an aluminum drip edge to the perimeter of the building, and also new lead chimney flashing. They also repointed one of the chimneys.

It was a great experience. I have an old house and live in the city so space is tight. Capital responded and submitted an estimate very promptly. The estimate was more comprehensive than others. Dave answered all my questions and presented me with options when asked. A start date was set and the work force showed up early every day. My neighbors houses were protected, as was mine. The site was cleaned every day. The work force was polite and quiet, easy to work with. Living alone, I usually hate making the decisions surrounding serious work on my home. Capital took the pain out of the process. I found this company on Angie's List and am so pleased, I won't hesitate to recommend both Capital and Angies

It could not have gone better. It was very high quality, very efficient, very professional and very quick. They couldn't have been any more pleasant to work with. They had great communication and took me through each phase of the project. Included in the price was also the repair leaks that occurred while they were working. House is 2 1/2 stories on a sloped lot. During a very heavy rainstorm on a Sunday, a lot of water started coming into our kitchen walls and ceiling. We thought it could be a roof or gutter leak but couldn't tell where it was coming from. (The area where we thought the problem was is about 25-30' above grade.) We reached Capital early in the week, David came out to investigate on Thursday, emailed a quote over the next weekend, and had a crew here to complete the repairs on the following Monday, before the next rainstorm began. They inspected the roof, removed and replaced flashing at the back of the gutter, sealed a leak at the fascia, caulked some windows, and cleaned and oiled the gutters. They showed up when promised (despite high demand for roof services that week), and did the job efficiently and effectively. The cost per hour was probably more than average but they were very responsive, prompt, professional, and thorough, so it was totally worth it.

Capital was punctual, responsive and professional. The 2 man crew was polite, and explained exactly what they did. Great company. I have several projects planned, and I'll definitely give Capital an opportunity to bid.
Description of Work: During a driven rain a leak developed. We called Capital Construction on a Thursday - the owner, Dave, came out the next morning and determined what should be done. The following Wednesday he and his crew arrived in the early morning, removed the siding, reflashed and resealed two windows, replaced J channel as required, and cleaned up and left the house looking great. During the most recent record-setting rainfall, not a drop of water; dry as a bone.

I had trouble finding companies that handle slate roof in Jamaica Plain AND which would actually show up to quote the job. Capital was in the lower range of the quotes we solicited. My main issue is that Capital Construction was not responsive enough and I now have damage to my walls which could have been avoided if I had gotten a live person on the phone. I called Capital Construction over two weeks ago to repair my skylights. I was sent straight to voicemail and left a message. When I didn?t hear back, I called again and this time received a message back. But when I called 5 minutes later, it went straight to voicemail. No one called me again for over a week when I left ANOTHER message. Again, no call back. It?s been another week since I called the last time. After all this rain, I now have significant water damage to my paint and ceiling. I can?t help but think that if they had been responsive, I wouldn?t have to repaint and plaster. Very frustrating!
Description of Work: I called to have my skylights repaired because one is cracked and a couple others are leaking.

From the start, working with David was a great experience. He was responsive, friendly, and provided all the information I asked for. His estimate was extremely competitive and he was able to start working almost immediately. When the project started, everything was coordinated really well despite some complications that arose due to snowy weather. His team was equally professional and were extremely careful to leave the site as clean as they found it. I would definitely use Capital again for any construction project that I have.
Description of Work: David estimated and completed the work of replacing the steep sections of a mansard victorian home in the middle of the city. This included removing the existing roof to the sheeting, replacing any rot, re-sheeting and replacing all the shingling. It also included replacement of rotted wood around 6 windows and painting all trim.
