It went well. They arrived at the appointed time and since there is a cap on my chimney, it needed to be cleaned from inside the house. They laid drop cloths and brought the hoses in through the garage. I had originally asked to have the section of the chimney that vents my furnace also cleaned for an additional $175. He examined my furnace and since I have always had natural gas, he said I didn't need that service. The job was done quickly and they cleaned up well. I was very pleased.
Description of Work: Three people arrived and used tools to clean the chimney from the inside.

I believe that it was the owner who came and did a good job on the cleaning. However, initially (over the phone) he told me that they could not do it the week I needed it done as they were swamped. So I thanked him and said I would try someone else. He then said, "No, wait. We'll fit you in." When the day came, no one showed up at the time we'd scheduled and when I called an hour later to see where they were, he said they couldn't do it that day after all. I had made a special trip down to the Cape from the Boston area that day just for this, so I was aggravated (I had specifically told him that I would be doing that). It was mid-afternoon and would be impossible to get someone else to do it at that point. In the end the owner came himself, which I appreciated, and he did one of the three chimneys and looked at the other two (for a $35 fee per chimney to check). He seemed to do a careful job on the cleaning and was pleasant and polite. However, I would have preferred to learn at the initial phone call that they wouldn't be able to do it and have left it at that so that I might have made other plans without having the situation play out as it did.
Description of Work: Cleaned one chimney, checked two others but I was told that those two did not need cleaning at the time (one outside chimney had never been used).

All went well, and I would recommend to anyone.
Description of Work: Covered the floor to prevent damage, pointed out a couple of things I could do with the gaps in the brick, cleaned the entire flue area with special brush, used another type of brush to clean fire place, checked the mechanics, and did a final vacuum. Dan had two helpers, everyone was very sociable and worked well together.

I called Old Tyme for a chimney inspection because we hadn't used our fireplace in about 10 years. Dan showed up right when he said he would and was very friendly and approachable. He got right to work and was very conscientious about moving items and making a mess. He was done in about 30 minutes and made a suggestion for further repairs that should be completed before next winter. Dan (and Baxter, his Golden Retriever that came out of the van at my suggestion) will be coming back in the spring for further service. Recommended!

We called Dan Hill on a Monday morning. He arrived in Hyannis around noon THE SAME DAY. What we learned: Our 28 year old fireplace was letting in a lot of cold air because of a damper stuck in the open position. Heavy rains let water drip down the back wall of the fireplace because there was no chimney cap. The cover to the ash pit in the floor of the fireplace was missing. And the cleanout door in the cellar at the base of the chimney was also missing. Dan took care of all these items in a couple of hours. He had all the parts with him in the truck. We were given a Gelco warranty card for the chimney cap. And an invoice breaking down the cost item by item. And a 5% discount. If you live on the Cape, give Old Tyme Chimney Sweep a call, you won't be disappointed. As soon as the weather warms up, Dan is taking care of our flashing and crown coating.

The first fire I had in my newly purchased home filled the house with smoke. I had another chimney company take a look at the problem and their recommendation involved several thousand dollars to fix. I joined Angies List,, found Old Tyme Chimney and called. I did not tell Dan Hill that another company had already diagnosed the problem. Dan suggested to fix the flashing and put a new cap on to allow more airflow, he didn't think there were any other problems. After telling Dan with I'd been told earlier we both agreed a second opinion is a smart idea. Dan came and did the work 2 days later and said there shouldn't be any problems going forward. He's definitely won my business!

We recently moved into this house and knew from the home inspection that the fireplace & chimney needed attention. I called Dan and he came out the same week to do the work. He arrived exactly when he said he would and completed the work in one morning. The cost was within the price range he had estimated over the phone. He was incredibly friendly and helpful and answered all my questions. I enthusiastically recommend him to anyone needing chimney work done!

We bought a house with a wood stove in the summer, and wanted the chimney cleaned and the stove inspected before using it. We called Old Tyme Chimney Sweep based on the good reviews on Angies List. The first available appointment was about 3 weeks out, which was not a problem. Two men arrived at the time promised. They were very nice and professional, and did excellent work. They explained to me how to operate the stove and cleaned the chimney (which needed it!). They placed cloths from the entrance to the chimney to walk and work on, and everything was perfectly clean after they left. They discovered that the chimney needed some minor repair, and offered to do it at some point in the future. We knew about this already from the house inspection, and plan to have them do the work, but it is not urgent. I was impressed by how professional they were, and will definitely use this company again in the future.

The two gentlemen arrived a half hour late; however, they DID call and apologize beforehand, and because I wasn't going anywhere that day, I was not upset. They were friendly and did a lot of clowning around, said they were cousins, tough being family, can't fire each other, etc. I had hired them for a full sweeping of my chimney which, from prior experience, takes quite a bit of time. What I got was a vacuuming of my hearth and they stuck a vacuum up my chimney from the fireplace. I just had my hardwood floors refinished two months ago -- they did not spread out a cloth to protect the floors or the tile hearth area. They didn't even remove the wood grate from the hearth, just vacuumed around it. I had to advise them that the flue actually served two fireplaces - the primary one in the living room and the one around the corner. One gentleman was adamant I was wrong. I finally showed him the ashes and dirt that were being dumped into my smaller fireplace from the work that was being done on the larger one. How did they NOT SEE the large opening in the main flue??? They did give me great advice about burning in my fireplace with an unlined chimney, especially where my house is an antique. I was advised that there may be holes sparks can get through that could cause a fire in the interior of my home. All three of my chimneys are uncapped, yet they did not suggest placing a cap on any of them which I found odd as I had prepared myself to listen to their suggestions knowing I should probably take care of that issue. I didn't bring the subject up. Again, they were very personable, but I could have vacuumed my own hearth and saved the $175. I will not use them again but instead go back to the company I used in the past as they were extremely thorough, careful, and cost the same amount of money.

Called Dan and asked if they could do an inspection/sweep of our chimney. We set up an appt for the next day. They were on-time, cheerful and very thorough. Told us we really did not need an annual inspection/cleaning, that every 2-3 years would be fine considering the type of wood and frequency of our fires. Would definitely use them again and recommend them for their cleanliness, thoroughness and sense(s) of humor.

As I said they came and asked me if I had any problems. I was trying to decide whether to take the metal door assembly off, I leaned toward taking it off. They fixed the damper on the fireplace so it would seal and I wouldn't need the doors. They worked quickly and are very nice. I can't think of any way they could improve their service.
Description of Work: They came on time and cleaned two chimneys. Put one together; I had a 30 year old door ensemble that was blocking the circulation and heat, had to be disassembled and the bricks behind it cleaned. Surprise! When I came in from paying, they had even cleaned both fireplaces and didn't leave any debris behind. Anyone leaving less than AAA's should think about it. These days to have two nice men come, be polite, efficient, helpful and priced at less than others charge, is something to be grateful for. We should appreciate tradesmen with these values. Remember, even though they are pricing their work very reasonably, they still have to live their lives with the cost we all face. Be grateful.

I found the chimney sweep on Angie's list. I called and the phone was answered immediately. We set up an agreeable date and time. They arrived on time, ready to work and very professional. They checked the chimney first, explained what needed to be done, afet explaining it to us they got to work. They placed a buffer around the fireplace to assure no mess could get into the living room. The works was done well and completely with respect for us and our home. He even told us we could go a couple of years between cleaning since we use the fireplace so infrequently.

Arrived promptly with his daughter (assistant) and Golden Lab (companion). Set to work preparing chimney top while assistant prepared mortar. While he installed and mortared the cap in place, his assistant worked at repointing areas of the chimney where mortar had washed out. Job was completed efficiently and they cleaned up all pieces of mortar etc which had been removed.I was fully satisfied with the work performed.

Called for an estimate based on reviews on Angie List. Dan was very responsive and checked out the problem, gave an estimate and told us when he would do work. Performed work when scheduled as indicated. The only thing that could be improved is a more formal estimate could be written up and left/sent to customer rather than just an email.

10/26, Dan arrived for our scheduled estimate visit. He was early, but he had phoned me to let me know that he'd be in my neighborhood and would be almost an hour early, if that was OK with me---excellent communication!!! He arrived in his bright red work van, which was sparkling clean with shiny ladders on top, and he was very personable and professionally dressed in a clean black work outfit---Very good first impression. After hearing my story, and seeing the torn screening edges sticking up from the tops of my chimneys, Dan put up his ladder to take a closer look. With the help of his lovely young assistant bracing the ladder on the ground, Dan checked both chimneys from the roof. He took the needed measurements, and noted a crack at the crown of my leaking chimney. Dan gave me a written estimate, told me what the stainless steel caps would cost, that I needed large one, 17" x 58" one for my extra large chimney ( 2 separate fireboxes and furnace vent openings), and recommended that caps needed to go on as soon as possible, because raccoons were trying to get in. He asked me to call him to schedule, if I wanted him to do the work --- I hired him on the spot. Dan checked his schedule, and said that he could fit me in at 11AM on Nov. 2 ---but I had to be away that day. He said that if I was willing to let him do the indoor work "right now", he could do the roof work on the 2nd, even if I wasn't home. I could leave a check for him taped to my front door. Fantastic plan, and I agreed. Dan, who had all his equipment and a helper with him, cleaned my leaking fireplace and fixed that damper, and then another in the my living room fireplace, that was "off track". He was fast, efficient, neat, and had no trouble answering questions while he worked. On November 2nd, I arrived home to find my caps installed (they looked great) and, in the envelope that I had taped to the front door were my Gelco warranty cards, all filled out, as well as a "neatly printed" invoice. Great job! I am a happy customer and wouldn't hesitate to use him again!
Description of Work: Raccoons have been trying to nest in my chimneys for 2 seasons. ONE was finally successful, and raised three babies above my kitchen fireplace. Since then, in heavy rain storms, water drips straight down into the hearth and some runs down the back wall of that fireplace. We had screening put over the chimney tops, as a temporary raccoon deterrent, but they were still trying to get in, so I knew it was time for chimney caps. I called Dan Hill of Old Tyme Chimney Sweep, after reading his positive customer ratings and reports and going to his website, and recounted my problems. I made an appointment for him to come on Oct. 26, 2011 to give me an estimate for caps, cleaning and repairs. After going up on the roof to take measurements and check for damage, he wrote out an estimate listing the 2 caps: 17" x 58" for $475. and 17" x 29" at $285., crown coating for $250 and the sweep $165 for a total of $1175 for the complete job.. Dan has very neat, easy- to- read printing on all pf his paperwork. By mutual agreement, on Oct. 26th, he cleaned the kitchen chimney, repaired that damper, and repaired the damper in the living room (off track). I paid by check for that portion of the estimated service, and he gave me an invoice for "sweeping kitchen fireplace and vac. soot, paid in full, $165.". He said to leave a check for $1010, taped to the front door before I left home on Nov. 2. On the 2nd, he arrived, just as I was leaving, at 10:45AM . and said he saw the envelope on my front door, as we said Hello...Goodbye! I arrived home at 4PM to find everything done and looking great! My paperwork was in the same envelope on the front door---a complete invoice for the caps and crown coating for a total of $1010.,marked paid in full, and 2 warranty cards for the Gelco Stainless Steel caps, all filled out in Dan's neat printing, ready for mailing.

Mr. Hill arived, spoke with my wife and later emailed the estimate . He broke the estimate down, so I could see the price for each faze. I called and scheduled appointment for work. Day arrived and it was cancelled, due to weather. Made second appointment for July 29, 2011. Mr. Hill & his helper arrived right on time. They had all the work done by 13:00 hrs, with the exception of cleaning the flue. He needed another helper to move a pellet stove for cleaning the flue, and would come by the next time he was in the area. But, the sweep price was removed from the final bill.

We spent a few months trying to get work done on the chimney of our 25 year old house. We had everything from no-shows to scam artists who showed us a fake "video" of the inside of our chimney and said we needed several thousand dollar repair so we wouldn't be "exposed CO2 poisoning". In that case we were charged for the estimate. Old Tyme is a professional, well-run company who was fair, professional and honest. They came on time for both appointments, called to give us a final figure, left the house clean and did a great job. If you live on the Cape, start with them. You will save a lot of time and be happy you did.

It went fantastically! They were here promptly, did their work, and left absolutely no mess. They vacuumed up after themselves...and there could have been a real LOT of mess, since they had to take out parts and pieces. I now have a new stainless steel liner with a limited lifetime warranty. YAY!!! And the only pain was writing the check and even that was a lot less painful than I thought! Use this company...you won't regret it!
Description of Work: I had a puff-back on my oil furnace, and found out that I needed a new chimney liner sooner than later. The ceramic one was crumbling and blocked up the flue so the soot came into the house. Dan Hill (the Old Tyme Chimney man) came, measured the length of liner, then installed said liner, with a new chimney cap.
