I've answered this in the item above. Actual work was not performed. Got only as far as a visit to look at the various jobs and provide and estimate for work and materials involved.
Description of Work: The provider responded quite quickly to my contact, soon after I purchased an Angie's List Big Deal. Person came to look over the various tasks (replace cracked marble step in front; repair loose stair tread to basement; level balconies; repair basement stone/brick foundation; replace lintels above 9 old windows). I received an estimate for each item, except the marble step, within a short period of time. This estimate was missing because they had not yet been able to locate a vender for the marble needed. Heard that it was difficult, after which I asked whether the current marble piece could be used, by removing shorter end of cracked step. Said that worker would need to come take a look to determine that. In an email, I said we'd like to go ahead with the loose step tread on the outdoor stairs to the basement, and would wait on the other items until additional bids had come in. I never heard another word. Given the greater responsiveness of other vendors who were asked to bid on the job, including one for whom getting the marble for the front step was not an issue, I did not contact American Made Mason any further. I've learned through past experience that it is rarely worth dealing with a vendor who does not follow up, or who says they are having difficulty locating some needed material. The C ratings for responsiveness and professionalism are based on lack of follow through, not the initial contact and visit.

I made an appointment for an estimate to have major work done to the foundation of my house and to replace deteriorating stairs and repoint my chimney. Jim arrived on time the day of the appointment and was very professional. We discussed the work and Jim explained to me what would be involved in completing the project. He stated that they would be able to repoint the exterior of the foundation during the warm weather and if I were to wait until winter to repoint the interior, he would give me a 25% discount on that portion of the job. The estimate was reasonable, so I contacted Jim to let him know that I wanted to proceed with the project. The work was done over the course of one of the hottest weeks of the summer. Jim and his crew did a fantastic job. The one issue was that when they went up to the roof to repoint the chimney, they found a major problem and the chimney had to be totally rebuilt. this added an addition $1450 to the original estimate. That of course, was not the fault of the contractor. I appreciated that the problem was brought to my attention and a quality job was done rebuilding the chimney. Overall, I was very pleased with the work and plan to use this contractor to complete the interior foundation work later this year.

Jim was quite personable and responsive, and the price was right. In the end, the job came out okay, but it was a rough road getting there, for the following reasons: 1. The first day they showed up to work, the crew had forgotten some equipment back at the shop and had to go retrieve it (about 1 hour round trip). When they returned, they had still forgotten a hose and needed to borrow mine. 2. I was alarmed one day when a two-person crew was doing work, and one was teaching the other how to read a tape measure. 2. I gave Jim clear, engineered plans of the work required. When the crew arrived, they asked me questions as if they had not read the plans. 3. I received a phone call from Jim at 6:30 AM from the Lowe's parking lot because he was confused about what materials he needed. If he had read the plans, he would have not needed to ask me. 4. There was welding work required for this job, and this was not quoted in the estimate. The welding requirement was clearly stated in the plans, and if Jim had read the plans, there wouldn't have been any confusion. To his credit, he took off $250 from the bill for the confusion. 5. Maybe I'm too picky, but I was not satisfied with the straightness of the columns, and had to adjust them myself prior to welding. Despite these complaints, the guys worked hard to get the job done. I would consider hiring them again to do a patio or stone wall, but not for structural work in my home.

Response from American Made Masonry LLC
i believe some of these points are not accurately portrayed 1)when we first got to the job we encountered a situation we did not foresee and had to return to the shop to grab a few more things 2) At the time of this job i had a brand new laborer with me who was still training and was still learning the finer points of a tape measure(everyone has to start somewhere) at the time his responsibilities were just to dig holes, lug materials, and learn from me 3)the morning of the job i had misplaced the plans provided for the job so i did call the homeowner from the supply yard just to confirm some details 4)before i left the job i made sure all the columns were perfectly plumb and straight, upon inspection of the job by the towns inspector he commented specifically that the work was very nicely done as we take great pride in all our work and take great strides to assure that everything is done to the highest standards and quality

Service provider came to my house & gave me estimate for complete job. I called twice to set an appointment to do the work and was told, "You're on my schedule." Both times he was unwilling to give me the date when the job would be done. (I did tell him when I was going to be away, and he said he'd do it soon after I returned. It's been 2 weeks now, and no call. I'm tired of calling him, and I no longer want him to do the job.)

this customer was on our schedule and we had full intentions of completing her job, i tried explaining to her that we could not commit to a specific date more than a few days out as we have to deal with weather and other delays in our business that prevent us from doing that, i gave her a ballpark time frame and told her i would be in touch as soon as i knew the specific date

Amazing job! I called Jim on a Saturday regarding significant repairs to our fieldstone foundation. Jim came out Sunday morning to provide an estimate. Jim immediately identified the source of our problem (a buckled fieldstone wall), something that even a structural engineer had missed. He also identified the source of the problem (improperly positioned downspouts). Jim and his team set to work the next day. Their team worked constantly for two full weeks until the work was complete. The damage was more significant than originally thought, so the final bill was higher than the estimate. However, Jim checked in before commencing any additional work and was excellent at explaining why it should be done. He was also very good at staying within my overall budget. I can't say much on price because I never got a second estimate. I knew after our first meeting that Jim was the right guy for this job. Also, I don't like to cut corners on major projects, which may have upped the price a bit. But I can say that these guys worked d*** hard for two weeks and poured an incredible amount of concrete. Relative to other work I've had done, I think I got a good value.

the only thing to add is it wasn't done within the time allotment(due to weather) which I appreciated but my emails were always answered and never did I feel that they would not honor the agreement.
Description of Work: fixing cracks in cement and repairing a cracked brick. they were here approximately 3.5 hours. I don't know what masonery charges are usually. This company was $200.00 an hour. They were efficient, professional and discussed the overtime of the "deal" before they proceeded and were timing not to leave work in a half finished state and giving me what I could afford. All in all, i rated the price good because I have no idea but was very satisfied with their work and professionalism. If it was a bigger project needed I would check to see what the "average" price per hour was and if they were anywhere near the "range" I would use them again.

Jim and company did a great job. Even though there was not much time, they finished the work! They were honest about how much they could do to patch the foundation in the limited amount of time and still did what they could. I was extremely pleased. Their communication via email was prompt and efficient, particularly as this was a very small job. I would definitely use them again and I will recommend them to my friends and neighbors.

American Made Masonry was really great to work with, would use them again and recommend them to a friend without hesitation. I contacted 5 contractors to come out and give me a quote and 3 showed up. 1 of the 3 was over an hour late. No call letting me know he was going to be late either. Jim, from American Made, showed up on time and was extremely professional. Jim really listened to my needs and concerns, taking the time to walk me through his proposal, and showing me his portfolio of works he had completed. That was a nice touch, not only did it give me ideas, it showed his competency to do a good job. His professionalism, knowledge, and desire to do right by the client was clear to me from our first meeting. Just a great salt-of-the-earth type guy. AM?s quote was right in there with the other three contractors. I went with them because Jim left me feeling most confidence in their ability to do the work. He and his crew showed up on the date we decided on and he finished pretty much exactly when he said they would. Throughout the different stages of the job, Jim kept me in the loop as to what they were doing and made sure I was happy with the way things were going. His crew were all friendly and polite. Their attention to detail and the clean and orderly jobsite was refreshing. I have had a lot of work done to my home in the past and this was one of the few pleasant experiences. I had total faith in these guys and they did not disappoint. I even made a couple small changes in what I wanted along the way, that was different than what we had discussed, and Jim took in in stride incorporating it into his design, no problem. Jims follow up was great. He went above and beyond making sure I was 100% satisfied with the work being done. Really a great company to work with! We already have talked about him coming back in the winter to sort out some water issues I have in the basement

Jim and his crew appeared to know what they were doing to repair my water problem but w/ the first rain, it was as if they did nothing at all. The water entering my living room not only remains the same, but is actually worse as water now enters further into the living room in completely new additional areas necessitating even an additional bucket to capture the water. I am devastated to have spent thousands of dollars to receive no reprieve, especially after joining Angie's list and researching extensively and carefully to locate a reputable mason w/ good reviews! Furthermore, the exterior appearance of the stone wall is worse than before. One can clearly see where the former work begins as it seems they made no effort to blend the new work with the former. This is unsightly, and cheapens this expensive exterior stone wall that should last at least a lifetime. I attempted to contact Jim just after he completed the job, while it was raining and water was steadily entering my living room for hours, so he himself could view the problem as it was occurring. Despite what I thought he'd agree to be a serious situation, he did not respond to me at all. I tried again a couple weeks later, at which point he finally did return my call. I was surprised and very put off by his noncaring, nonchalant attitude, especially w/ such a critical issue. I asked what he could do to repair his work and fix the problem given rain is entering in exactly the area he was to repair and now additional areas. He repeatedly insisted his work is good and needs no correction. Hoping he'd recognize that he had some responsibility given the repair work for which I hired and paid him was completely unsuccessful, I asked what he thought would be fair. He eventually mumbled what seemed to be a very insincere offer, that he could come to work on a different area of the wall but not examine or redo the work he already did; this would obviously involve charging me thousands more dollars! Since he took no responsibility and did not offer to correct anything or remedy at all the work he did, I asked if could reimburse me a small portion of the money I paid him given I now need to hire another mason to correct the problem. He refused and offered nothing, and seems to feel no sense of remorse or responsibility. I told him I'd give him some time to reconsider before writing this review hoping he'd have some integrity and pride in his work and reputation. But after another couple weeks with no reply from him, I am writing about my experience. I now need to hire another mason to fix the ongoing water problem and make the wall presentable so it appears relatively consistent to the eye. I am extremely disappointed in American Made Masonry's work and in their lack of concern and professionalism in handling the situation. They seemed to have no interest in customer satisfaction nor in taking any responsibility for their work which is appauling. If they thought at all that they were incapable of fixing the problem, they should have been upfront. If they thought repairing even a section of the wall would yield no positive results, why represent themselves as competent to do so and charge a large amount of money. I would never hire them again nor recommend them.

Response from American Made Masonry LLC
We were first contracted by this customer to re-do poorly done brick work around 3 windows. While we were there the customer had mentioned that she had just had one whole side of her house covered with natural stone veneer and she was getting water leaking though that wall, particularly through a row of windows. She explained that the contractor that had installed the veneer had done a horrible job and completely botched the whole project. It was obvious that it was done poorly because there were holes on the joints everywhere. Furthermore, after we examined it very closely we discovered that there was no flashing or moisture barrier of any kind underneath any of the stone work. I promptly informed the customer that the whole wall was installed completely wrong and the only way to guarantee to stop the water was to replace the whole wall. She responded by saying there was no way she could afford that as she was in way over her head with a plethora of other projects that needed to be fixed due to shoddy workmanship done by a several other contractors that have been there in the past. I reluctantly suggested we take out a small section above the windows where it was coming in the worst and flash above the windows and install ice and water shield. EVERY STEP OF THE WAY WE INFORMED HER THAT THERE WAS NO GUARANTEE THIS WOULD STOP THE WATER. We informed her several times that there was a good chance the water was coming in from another spot on the wall and just replacing less than 1% of a completely botched job was no guarantee when there are thousands of water entry points on the remaining 99%. Even with this information the customer insisted she would like to try it anyway. . At American Made Masonry we take great pride in the quality of our work and customer satisfaction, both of which are evident by are large number of straight “A” reviews on Angie’s List and this being our only “F” in over 10 years of business. I do have empathy for this customer as she has been a victim of some extremely shoddy work by many other contractors and wish her the best of luck in the future. However, the problem she has is with the contractor who originally installed the stone, not with me. I told her time and time again that this small repair was no guarantee and could not guarantee it unless the entire project was redone correctly (the original installation was that bad) and if she did do that in the future I would guarantee the small spot I did.

Jim Linskey responded promptly and visited the next week. His price was provided on the spot verbally, but was not followed-up with a written proposal. The price was high but probably reasonable if repairs were not possible and a substantial amount of sub-structure work would be required. It was based on demolishing the existing steps and re-constructing from foundation up. Foundation work would be extra. Another contractor was selected based on scope and price.
Description of Work: The main front entrance to our home includes stairs from the sidewalk down to the yard. They are mortared stone structures with five risers and treads made of 5” thick granite blocks. Over time the mortar beneath the stone steps had deteriorated and the granite blocks were loose. The project included removing the granite blocks, inspecting and stabilizing the stone substructure, and re-laying the existing stone with fresh mortar. From all appearances the foundation was solid, since the stairs had not moved in the 50+ years they have existed, however the condition of the stone rubble substructure was unknown.

Jim's company fixed our chimney and a pillar holding up our porch. He not only did a great job, he did it in a reasonable amount of time and according to his estimate. He even recommended a carpenter for the porch job who also did a good job. His guys were courteous and professional. The only "complaint" is that in fixing our chimney, they dropped some things into the chimney, which ended up blocking the furnace flue. (We have a funky furnace flue and already had a decent amount of debris, which are not Jim's fault.) Unfortunately, our carbon monoxide alarm went off late at night. We called Jim, and he came over the very next morning to clean out the blockage at no charge.
