They did the repairs quickly and efficiently
Description of Work: We have used Fire and Ice several times. They repaired our central air system, replaced our hot water heater and repaired a kick space heater. Very refreshing in this day and age to find 2 gentlemen who are courteous, prompt, get the job done in a timely manner and take pride in their work!

They came out to our house and gave us a very high quote; it was 10 times higher than other quotes we got. They also used a lot of scare tactics; talking a lot about what the inspectors were going to approve, about pulling permits and how we were going to bring our house down. They also called my husband and were doing this high pressure sales thing. It made us both really uncomfortable so we decided not to work with them. They charged us $400 to come out and give us a quote. They were here for 2 hours and at the time they gave us the impression that they were going to give us a detailed quote on paper. We were considering legal action against the people who had started the job and never finished it. We were thinking that it would be helpful to have a bunch of written quotes but they never did provide us with a written quote. We thought if it was going to cost that much money then we were definitely going to litigate. After talking to other people we realized their quote was way out of range. When they were here we felt like they were being very informative and helpful but towards the end of the meeting we began to become concerned. We were not pleased with their responsiveness; we got a lot of high pressure follow-up calls afterwards, which was way too much. They were right on time and came right when they said they would come. They were probably totally professional and they seemed like they knew what they were talking about when they were here but something was definitely wrong with their quote.
Description of Work: We got a quote from Fire & Ice to repair our heater and install an upstairs air conditioner.

Response from Fire & Ice HVAC LLC
It is unfortunate that you and your husband did not see the safety concerns that Fire & Ice saw once we arrived at your home. I would like to take the opportunity to clarify exactly what occurred throughout this assessment. Your husband contacted Fire & Ice to come to your home and assess and figure the steps needed to complete a HVAC system that was partially started by another Contractor and abandoned once they found out they under bid the project. F&I made an agreement with your husband to come out on the following terms since this was a job that was in disrepair: Assess the work that was started and its adequacy, determine additional scope of work needed to complete the project to conform with current building regulations including gas, electrical, sheet metal, plumbing and roofing. There was no agreement to provide a written proposal for you and your husband to use in litigation towards another Contractor. F&I spent two hours going through the entire project and discussed in great detail the work required to complete the project. We find it highly unlikely that there were other Contractors willing to perform the work correctly and pulling all the necessary permits mentioned above. In no way would F&I perform ANY WORK without pulling ALL necessary permits. These are NOT scare tactics, it is the only way to perform work and it is the LAW. If in fact other quotes were ten times less, our material costs alone would be 4 times that! In addition, we gave you our pricing prior to leaving your home and then you called us several days later requesting another quote to just complete the heating work. In no way whatsoever will F&I use “pressure tactics” to sell work. We give our customers options and are always welcome to having you find other quotes from Contractors performing the SAME scope of work. We don’t know who these other Contractors are but if they are willing to do the same amount of work as us for ten times less, please let us know who they are and we can start SUBCONTRACTING them out!

Central Air Conditioner stopped working called another company who changed the circuit board and the air conditioner came back on. However, technician left before verifying that the unit was actually cooling the apartment. When I called the original company back, and said that the apartment was not getting cooler, they said that I had another problem and that there was a constriction somewhere in the unit and it would take the whole day to find and fix. At that point I called Fire and Ice, who came over on Sunday, (they were at the apartment for approximately 2 hours) and said that there was no restriction, just that when the new circuit board was put in, the unit reset itself, and the fan in the unit was turning the wrong way. They reset the fan to turn the correct way, and the unit started cooling the apratment right away. They also cahanged my thermostat, which was not accurate. They really knew what they were doing. I paid extra because it was Sunday, but I was glad that the problem was quickly fixed. I would use them again in a heart beat.
Description of Work: Central air conditioner was not cooling although I could hear it running. Diagnosed the problem right away and had it cooling the apt in no time. Came on Sunday.

They were great. read above. the price was a bit of a shock, although they had said it would cost extra on a holiday, but I was just so happy to have heat.
Description of Work: My house was feeling cold for a day or so. I called the gas company and they came to see if there was a leak and why my boiler would not work. They could not find any problem with the boiler so they told me to call a plumber and shut it off. The guy from the gas company was also completely baffled by my programmable thermostats. I was not too familiar on how they worked either. So with the boiler shut off, I had no options for heat and it was freezing! I joined Angie's list just to find people to call but being New Year's Day, I knew it would be tough to get someone in. Of all the places I called, only 3 got back to me. B&G sheet metal, who had put in my air conditioner, just did not service boilers, only hot air systems. Kerivan-Lane only serviced their own oil customers or ones where they did the installation. Fire and Ice called back that night and came and fixed the problem and then finally after 2 cold days, I had heat! They replaced the batteries on all my thermostats and did a check on the boiler and relit the pilot, but I'm not sure what else they did. I was upstairs in front of a space heater! I felt comfortable with them in my house and felt they knew what they were doing, much more than the person the gas company sent. I was so grateful that they were willing to come over that night around 10-11pm so I did not have to go another night without heat and possibly risk frozen pipes.

I hadn't had my gas furnace serviced or inspected at all during its 3 year lifespan, so I figured it was time. I chose Fire & Ice based on their reviews on Angie's List. I didn't get any other quotes for the service because I was more concerned with quality, so I can't give a good indication of their prices relative to other companies. So I emailed Fire & Ice about my service request and got a call back from Jon probably within an hour. Even though this wasn't urgent, he quickly scheduled me for later in the day. He clearly communicated timeframe, what to expect, costs, etc. Jon & Arthur stopped by later that day to service the furnace. They were extremely helpful, describing what they were doing and pointing out various things to keep in mind. They did a great job. I'd definitely use Jon and Arthur for future work.

Jonathan and Arthur were extremely responsive. I called to arrange an estimate and Jon was able to give me a ballpark over the phone just from me answering questions about the house and current heating system. Then he came out and looked at our furnace and radiators. He had to revise his initial estimate upward at that point as the furnace was bigger than he was expecting, but he still stayed below our other estimate. Over the course of 3-4 days, they removed our old furnace, built a concrete slab for the new one to stand on (as it sits in the lowest point of the basement and had been at risk of flooding), and installed the new furnace. They then flushed the whole system several times, as rusty water had been sitting in our radiators and spewed out once the new, more powerful furnace was hooked up. They even replaced a couple of the radiator valves at no charge. Both Jon and Arthur were extremely accessible by phone and came on Saturdays and evenings to do the work, as that was most convenient to our work schedules.

Our AC unit started leaking water due to a clogged condensate line and a poorly installed overflow pan&switch. I called Fire and Ice and they came over about an hour later. (I had called expecting to schedule an appointment the next day, but they came that evening as they were going on vacation the next day.) They were knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. Plus they made an effort not just to clear the drain, but also to try to adjust the unit so that the overflow pan would work, and not just spill out, should the drain clog again. They also replaced the existing, not very effective, cutoff switch with a new wet switch. All in all, they did a great job. The only negative I can think of is that the final bill was a bit more than I expected. (They charged $250 for the first hour, $200 for the second, and $185 for a part that sells for $95.)

These guys did an awesome (if somewhat pricey) job on my central A/C last month -- plugging a leak in the freon and replenishing the freon that had leaked out. However, my system went down again this past week and unfortunately the guys were on vacation and said they couldn't come for about a week. I was frantic -- and called another company -- but then Fire & Ice called back and one of the guys came in the dark to check the condenser outside. The fan belt was gone and looked like the motor was gone as well. They did not charge me -- and I really appreciated the fact that they came despite being closed and on vacation. but, in the meantime, I have found another company to do the ongoing maintenance -- and they put in a new motor. In fairness, the guys from Fire & Ice were terrific -- next time, however, they probably should just let the machine answer if they're on vacation -- No one wants to hear that it's going to be a week before they can get back to you.

Jon and Arthur are great. My 4 ton AC unit went out on a Wed night. We live in a third floor apt, and it get HOT in the summer. I called Thursday a.m. Jon came to check it out and give me an estimate. They installed the new unit Saturday a.m., showed up at 7:00, and were done by noon! Another highly rated company told me that in addition to the cost of the unit, I was going to have to hire a crane to get it to the roof, including getting the Town to close the street, which would have added thousands to the cost (not to mention delay in the middle of summer). Jon and Arthur (and one other helper) lifted the unit from the ground to the roof. It was a sight to behold. They did the job fast and right. I don't know whether they were the cheapest option on the install, but with the crane savings they certainly were. I'll happily recommend them to all my friends in the future.

We had the copper pipe attaching our a/c unit to our house stolen this winter, and have been trying to get it fixed for the last 2 months. After getting the runaround from another company, we called Fire & Ice on a Monday. They told us they could be there between 4:30-6:30 the next day, which they were (and called ahead of time to let us know they were on the way). They were extremely courteous, asked if they should take their shoes off in the house, and put up with our dog who was acting like a lunatic. They looked at the a/c unit and said they could easily repair the copper, and couldn't be sure whether or not they had to replace the unit until the pipe was fixed (this is in contrast to someone who came to our house and said that the unit would definitely have to be replaced, without even turning it on or anything else). They had me turn the unit on to see if it would run, which it did, so they said they were 90% certain it would work once the copper was replaced, but they couldn't promise anything. They said if they ended up having to replace the unit, they weren't going to charge me twice. They then fixed the coppper and replaced the refrigerant, and had the a/c up and running in 3 hours (without having to replace the unit). The cost was exactly as quoted, labor was $200 for the first hour plus $150 for each additional hour, and the rest was for the refrigerant and various parts they had to use. They were extraordinarily pleasant despite working outside in miserable heat, and could not have been more efficient. I would highly recommend this company.

They were the only ones who called back over Memorial Day week-end, a very, very hot week-end when my A/C was not working. They showed up on Tuesday after Memorial Day, as scheduled -- fixed the system and said they'd be back on Saturday to be sure that it was working. They did that -- and it's been fine since. They are a couple of hard-working young guys, know their stuff and were delights to work with -- a bit pricey, but very professional and very competent. I'd gladly recommend them to others.

We have lived in our home for over four years and we have never had our furnace/HVAC system serviced. At the advice of a friend we decided to have someone come in for preventative maintenance. We turned to Angie's list and found Fire & Ice to have terrific reviews and the highest of praise. We called John on Tuesday and got his voicemail and left a message. He got back to us within 30 minutes or so, getting our voicemail, and left a detailed response. I couldn't get back to him until around 7:45 that night and I suspected we would continue the game of phone tag since it was after normal office hours. This was not the case. He answered immediately, was very personable, helpful and asked specific questions to understand the job and then immediately walked me through what work would need to be done and how much it would cost. No run around, no "um... ahhh... let me see..." just clear decisive answers. We then moved on to scheduling the visit, and again a bit cynical around service calls I expected to hear it would be weeks before they could come out, instead they offered Wednesday (the next day) or Thursday. I happily picked a 2 hour window on Thursday between 6 and 8 PM and they arrived well within that window as planned. They were cordial, offered to take their shoes off and then jumped right in recapping what they would be doing and how they would do it. John opened up the furnace and started work immediately on that, walking me through everything as he went - while Arthur went outside to start work on the AC unit. They guys were top-notch. They are extremely knowledgeable and talk you through everything in lay terms without being patronizing. The charges were exactly what they quoted with no surprises. I now know a lot more about how to manage our HVAC system and have a fantastic company in our address book for future jobs. We liked them so much we are having them write up a quote for us to install a central in-line humidifier. I have already emailed the other two units in our condo building telling them about these guys and I would recommend them with the highest of praise. Other service companies could learn a few things from these guys! Thanks Arthur & John!

I called and left a message at around 2PM. John called me back within an hour and a half. I described the problem and he correctly assumed that my system just needed to be recharged and made an appointment with me for that evening to come by and take a look. The window was 5-6 PM and John and Artie showed at 5:15. Artie jumped right into diagnosing the issue (taking a pressure reading from the condensor) while I took John to the basement to inspect the system from the inside. They quickly diagnosed the issue, but did not have the right kind of refridgerant on hand to fill they job. They agreed to come back in a couple hours to complete the service. Artie gave me a call 10 minutes prior to their return to give me a heads up. Once they got back, Artie charged the refridgerant from the outside while John installed a new coupler to the condensor drain and cleaned out all the sediment. Throughout the whole process, they explained things to me and gave me pointers as to how to properly maintain my unit. I really appreciated that. My system needed a ton of refridgerant (6.5 lbs.) and they suspected a leak. They offered to come out for free later in the summer to ensure there wasn't a leak in the system. Overall, they were great, personable guys and I will be using them in the future.

I originally called the guys at Fire and Ice based on their past reviews on this site, and they lived up to every positive word. Their response time was impressive, returning my inquiring message within an hour and they were even able to come out to our house the next day. The guys were both honest and professional and worked within our budget. While working on the units they were timely and efficient and in the home they were respectful and professional. They were concerned with customer satisfaction and safety and went above and beyond in every aspect of the job. It is a small company and it was evident that they care about the customer experience more than just getting in and out and collecting a check. We plan on using them annually in the future.

One of the best service experiences we've had for maintenance on our home! My call was answered within a few hours to set up an appointment. Appointment was made within 3 days. Quoted price before I asked for it. When running late, they called to reset time frame. Arrived on time within newly set time frame. Took shoes off immediately as they entered our home. Explained what they would do firstly before rushing into the service work. Worked efficiently to provide the service and offered to provide us hard to find filters for our a/c's air handler Stuck to quoted price and added cost for filters and other work they provided. Could not have been more friendly and efficient.

We originally called after another company failed to repair our furnace. Fire and Ice spent 2 hours and identified the source of the problem and demonstrated to me how they determined it to be the problem. An expensive gas valve. As the unit was 20 years old I inquired about a replacement unit. They quoted $3800 including the hours they had already spent. Later that afternoon we had heat better than ever. There was no pressure to replace rather than repair. Just the facts as to how much the repair would cost and the possibility there would be more issues with the aging furnace. We chose to invest in the new unit as replacing the gas valve was too expensive to take the chance. Will hire them in the future.

I phoned Fire and Ice and very shortly afterward got a call back from John. When I described the situation to him, he declared quickly that a carbon monoxide leak meant the entire furnace needed to be replaced without even inspecting it. He then quoted a price of roughly $5000-6000 for the installation. His tone was somewhat aggressive, as if I were dealing with a high pressure salesman. The thing that quickly convinced me not to accept his offer was that he said he required $4000 in cash upon arrival at the house. This was very fishy and not the level of professionalism I found from other folks I ended up speaking to, all of whom were happy to accept a check. I will not be dealing with Fire and Ice again.

Hello, Always when a gas company "red tags" (turns off the gas permanently) an appliance (furnace/boiler etc.) it is deemed unsafe, unusable requiring complete replacement. Until replacement of the system, the gas line is not to be turned on. So because of this knowledge, I did not give you an option for repair. Based on experience with my other customers, my charge for a complete replacement of a new high efficiency furnace system with no hidden extras was well within the normal range. Due to the late time in the afternoon and this being an emergency, I had to get the information of the system and a yes or no answer to move forward with the work right away in order to shuffle my schedule around to squeeze you in next day. The supply house was ready to close but were waiting for my order. Under these circumstances with a trunkcated timetable, we get cash payment since we don't have the luxury of waiting for checks to clear at the bank. If other Contractors are willing to take a risk, that is their prerogative. We take a high pride and satisfaction in our work and are not willing to worry about collection of payment once a job is complete and functional. If we had worked with you previously, then we would accept payment via check because there would be a comfort level between the two parties. Please contact us if you would like to discuss any further. Thank you.

I spent $7375 on the job. They did good work at a very competitive price. They were very good on letting me know when they would be coming out to perform the work. They installed a brand new hydro air heating system. They replaced the previous system with the hydro air heating system. They did an excellent job. They did clean work. Both the partners were present from the date of the estimate all through the completion of the work. I had a very good experience with them. I will use them again in the future.
Description of Work: I used Fire & Ice: Complete Heating & Cooling. They replaced my system, two months ago.
