For five years, since my new central air system was installed, I've never experienced the cooling I'd come to expect from an earlier system. I called numerous outfits to diagnose and fix the problem, and they all said there was nothing to be done, that I shouldn't expect great cooling, and just accept the status quot. Fed up, I once again called someone, this time Jon of Fire and Ice. He immediately diagnosed the problem as a condenser too small for the inside unit. Though the cost hurt, I trusted his claim as it just made sense to me. Noone else had said this. Once we replaced the undersized condensor, the ac now works great. And it doesn't run all the time to maintain a comfortable temperature. I am impressed with how quickly they responded and how quickly they fixed a problem that has bedeviled me for years.

It went very well. I had a problem getting this heating system to work properly. It would not run long enough to bring the temperature in the apartment up to the setting on the thermostat. My building manager had tried all winter, replacing various parts, and still couldn't get it to work. Fire and Ice solve the problem quickly.

Received follow-up call after review posted, and I was told there was an attempted call and a VM left. But unless Verizon has massively screwed up and simultaneously failed to connect the call and then deleted the VM - someone else got the call. My rating remain the same. C.
Description of Work: There was quick and responsive contact via messaging to get contact detail set up, but the follow-up phone call never happened. Apparently they weren't interested in a project for full replacement of heat pump ($6k to $8k budget). I gave the company 2 extra business days before posting the review. "Fire and Ice" may be the greatest HVAC company in the Boston area, but I'll never find out because they didn't bother to follow-up.

Hello [member name removed] Thanks for the compliment. We strive to be the "greatest" HVAC company in the Boston area. We're unsure why you never received our voicemail. Just like you stated we responded very quickly to your email. We called you the next business day at the time you requested and left you a voicemail to call us back. After speaking on the phone with you today its clear you don't want to do business with us. This is not reflective of our work, just look at all our A reviews. We have numerous satisfied customers that use us for all their HVAC needs. We wish you the very best with the HVAC project. Have a good day!

The repair estimate was accurate, the service was on time and very courteous. We were very pleased with the professionalism and work ethic of Fire and Ice. We will definitely use them again.
Description of Work: Our furnace was broken on a very cold day. They came out the day we called, quickly diagnosed the problem, gave us our options, and came back the next day (the parts store was closed already on the night they came) with the parts they need to do the repair.

during this crazy cold snap my furnace started leaking. John scheduled an appointment for the day I called. My unit is on the top floor and not easy to get to or service. He and Archie came by and did a very careful job determining where the leaks were coming from. Throughout, they were courteous, professional and were able to pinpoint the problem and fix it. I appreciated their responsiveness and care in fixing the unit.

Our furnace broke on the weekend when it was quite cold outside (~5F in the morning). We called them and they sent someone over at their "emergency weekend rate" of $350/hr. I agreed to this rate because I hoped that it would only take 1hr and I was desperate to get the heat turned back on. The technician was friendly and seemed skilled. He diagnosed the problem within 20 minutes but did not have the required part (new control board). He said that they would pick one up for $200 plus their hourly rate of $350 (including driving time!). Because their hourly rate is so high, I told the technician that I would rather wait for their weekday rate and try to heat using our space heaters instead. In total I think that having them pick up the part and instal it would have cost an additional $700 in labor and $200 for the part. As it is, I ended up having to pay them $350 just to diagnose the problem. They would not tell me how or where to buy the part myself. After they left, I called around and got somebody else to buy the part for $115 and install it for $75 ($190 total). I think it is outrageous to charge somebody $350 an hour to pick up a part (and include driving time) and then to also markup the price of the part by 200%. Their work seems fine, but their prices are completely unreasonable.

As we explained over the phone on weekends we charge a higher per hour rate. We also explained that all after hours and weekend calls get billed for drive time as would most of our competitors. Like you said within an hour from your phone call including drive time we are able to pin point the problem ( Broken Control Board ) and locate a direct factory replacement part on a Saturday. You declined to have it replaced due to the higher rates and agreed to have us come out on Monday to install it. We explained to you that we would purchase the part anyway just in case it got too cold and needed it replaced sooner. We would've only charged you two more hours at the lower weekday rate plus the cost of the part. Later on in the day you called us up to cancel the work and asked us where to buy and how to install the part, We unfortunately can't tell our customers where to go and buy parts as most supply houses require licensed technicians to purchase heating parts. It would pose a huge liability issue if we told you where to buy it and how to install it. We are not sure who you found to buy you a factory replacement board for $115.00? $115.00 is our cost and if you do the math you'd see we only charged 75% mark up, not the 200% mark up you claim. They're are some questions we need to ask. Would this other company have been able to figure out the problem in a timely fashion like we did the first time? Are they insured? Are they licensed? Will they stand by the work if it fails again? We don't see how someone charging $75.00 on an after hours call can offer all this and more? Once again we feel we were completely upfront and honest from the moment you called us. We would've wished it to be a simple call as well as our weekends are valuable to us. We have many repeat and satisfied customers and are sorry you couldn't be one of them. We wish you the very best!

Extremely professional, personable, and courteous service. Did exactly the work that was needed. Went above and beyond the call of duty in taking care of a problem with the outdoor AC compressor. We felt completely comfortable with these guys in terms of the work, the pricing, having them in our house, everything. This is the second annual service they have done for us, and I expect we will ask them to return every year going into the future.

The repair went well and it was done promptly, but they overcharged me so much for a replacement part that I feel compelled to warn others against using Fire and Ice HVAC. Fire and Ice HVAC charged me, in addition to $225 an hour, $215 for a "gas thermocouple sensor ... new universal type." In my experience with other HVAC service providers, thermocouple sensors cost much less. So I asked about the part. At first, they wouldn't specify which one they used. They just said that they use high quality, original parts, which cost more but are worth it. Finally, they told me that they used a Burnham sensor, part # Burnham 8236004. My research showed that the retail cost of the part (retail price being much higher than someone in the business would pay) was $35. So, the markup was more than 600%. I told the service provider that I understood the $225 hourly fee, but that it didn't seem forthright to also charge more than six times the retail cost of a part. After some discussion, they agreed to charge me just 100% markup of the retail price of the part: $70. I called them for service again and this time was told that they would not provide service unless I promised not question their part charges. I asked if they could tell me the most markup they would charge for a part and suggested they limit it to 100% over retail. They responded by telling me that they don't disclose their markup and that they would no longer provide service to me. In my view, a service provide should be honest, and charge the hourly rate they believe is fair. They shouldn't hide charges by asking for more than 600% the cost of a replacement part. In sum, Fire and Ice HVAC performs good work, but they aren't honest about their charges and you will thus have to overpay them by an undisclosed amount in order to get service.
Description of Work: Fire and Ice HVAC came to my house for a gas boiler that wasn't producing enough heat. The service people found a broken gas thermocouple sensor that they replaced. It took an hour.

Being in business for six years we have never had an issue with a customer accusing us of a 700% mark up. Look through our reviews. We are always honest and upfront with our pricing Anyway the above comment is false and we would like to voice our side of the story. Back in December of 2013 we were called out after hours for a no heat call. The Landlord lives in California and we had to deal directly with the frozen tenants ( home had dropped down to 50 degrees) Because this was a new customer we decided to waive the higher overtime rate since it was after hours ( a savings of $100.00) We spent a total of two hours at the home. This included waiting a half an hour for tenant to answer door, removing junk from around boiler to gain access, troubleshooting and replacing sensor and giving the boiler a quick tune up to avoid any other potential issues which is a common courtesy to all new customers to gain business We felt this was more than fair only charging one hour labor. Before we installed part we got the approval from the Landlord for a parts charge of $215.00 After the Job was complete and the home was warm again we didn't receive the payment.( two weeks late) The labor was paid in full but the parts charge of $215.00 was over due. When we contacted the landlord he said he would not pay a 700% mark up. The part our cost was $70.00 and $215.00 customer cost for a mark up of 300% not 700%. In order to keep good customer relations we decided to discount the part as he requested and charged him $105.00 The landlord stated he could by same part online for $35.00. He would have to wait for a week for it with no heat and online heating supplies have a poor warranty and are cheap knockoffs that aren't reliable. We would never install them. All HVAC businesses charge a mark up. The lower the price the higher the mark up. When The landlord contacted us again for service we told him we could not guarantee a 100% mark up. He then threatened to write a bad report about us on Angies list unless we lowered our pricing. We do not give in to threats to tarnish our name. We feel as we've done everything we could to appease the landlord. Further more after the threats we didn't want to take a chance again having the landlord with hold payment especially after the tenant told us to watch out for him as she was having problems with him as well Look through the reviews and you'll see we are a growing HVAC company that is known for our honesty and upfront pricing with no hidden extras.. Our reviews speak for them selves, but I guess you cant please everybody. Fire and Ice HVAC LLC

Based on my experience with them, Fire & Ice seems the definition of a great small local business. I think there's only two guys running it (Steve and Artie), with an occasional assistant, so the person you talk to on the phone is typical the same person doing the work. That's crucial because you can get a sense right away whether they're the right company for the job. They replaced the compressor for my central AC, which included some tricky hoisiting of the new unit up 3 flights as well as the old unit down 3 flights. I think from the total time from when they first diagnosed the original as being DOA (which it clearly was), to when they finished installing the new system on my roof, was something like 36 hours? absolutely AWESOME turnaround time!! Probably not typical by any means, but they worked extra hard to get the job done since they saw it was going to get extra hot over the next few days. The installation was completed yesterday, and in fact today it did get up to around 96 outside. Thankfully, my place stayed a nice 70-72 degrees. I'll have to wait to see how the work holds up, but based on today and their friendly and quick service yesterday and the day before, it already seems like money well spent!

Our initial call was promptly returned by Jon, the owner. He provided information to help ensure that we had a basic understanding of what the options are and what would be involved. An appointment was easily scheduled to discuss further, view the premises, and develop an estimate. There was a $200 charge for this estimate, but this was applied to the job so did not end up costing us extra. Jon did a great job of explaining clearly the various choices, and did some problem solving to help meet our needs in an economical way. It was clear that he is thoroughly expert in this area. The work was scheduled within two weeks, they showed up when they said they would, and the whole job was completed in a couple of days. Communication with Jon was excellent - he kept us abreast of all plans via phone and e-mail. All of the people we met from Fire and Ice were knowledgeable, courteous and professional. The job was done with very little disruption to us, at a convenient time, and there was absolutely no mess afterwards. The equipment and installation were all exactly as promised. We could not be more satisfied with the whole experience. HIGHLY recommend Fire and Ice for any HVAC work. We certainly plan on using them in future for any HVAC needs, and will recommend them to friends. If only every contractor could be as good.... Truly outstanding.

A bit expensive ($887.50) for 2 1/2 hours of work but at least I have heat now. Recently renovated condo, over last summer, and the heat wasn't operating. Turns out since the unit has dual heat, there is a valve that needs to open and close depending on which zone is operating. They charge from the shop to my home. Both good guys, John and Arthur. They also noted complete deficiencies in the way the attic furnace was installed by the General Contractor, or his sub. First question for Monday morning is did the GC pull the proper permits for the gas, electric and especially the sheet metal. My guess is no. They noted the following things need to be repaired: The condensate line needs to be re-pitched to drain properly, the furnace needs to be lowered approx. 4 inches, the sheet metal needs to be insulted properly (to meet code) to R-8, the gas exhaust that goes through the roof needs to be adjusted, there are leaky joints, and the whole system needs a larger drain pan. That's just the heating list. On the cooling side: the chill lines need to be properly wrapped and overall the system needs a blast test and leak test once fixed. All of the repairs could cost upwards of $15K. Hopefully I can stick the repairs to the GC. Overall, expensive, but they fixed the heat at 8pm on a Saturday night and told me everything wrong with the system. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Repair required on a Saturday night to fix a forced hot air, gas furnace in an attic space. Needed a valve adjusted so that it could function due to there being two zones. In addition, they noted all the deficiencies in the system. The condo was renovated prior to purchase. Most of the HVAC work was not done well and I now have a long list to get fixed.

We have had some issues with our furnace exhaust piping for a while. Pipes were hung and glued inappropriately among other issues, and few different people who have come to do other things on the furnace have questioned how everything passed inspection when the house was built and when we moved in. The joints between piping sometimes leak, and most acutely a motor attached to my furnace started leaking as well. I ended up calling fire and ice because I was not happy with another company who came in to take a look (whole different review). Jon and Artie ended up coming that same day, diagnosing and fixing the immediate leaking problem, and talking me through what they felt needed to be done to take care of the rest of my heating issues. They made me feel comfortable and confident, and gave me a same day estimate that was in the ballpark/less than another company. We set up a time for them to come back to take care of the rest. A few days later, I called them because there was still a phantom leak coming from under my furnace. They came late afternoon that day, and ended up just taking care of everything that night (didn't leave until after 8) instead of waiting until our initially scheduled date. It's only been two days but so far so good, and I feel comfortable knowing that if there is a problem, they will take care of it. I am willing to pay competent people to take care of my stuff, but there is an even better satisfaction to paying competent people who I just really like. Thanks Artie and Jon, I am sure you'll be hearing from us again!!

A water heater began leaking on Sunday. I phoned Fire & Ice, who had done A/C work for us previously, to see if they could do the work. They asked detailed questions and determined that our water heater was not typical, was no longer being sold, and a replacement required a non-standard installation. Jon Ranieri spent time on Sunday investigating simpler alternatives, and was very responsive about calling back and was prompt on Monday morning calling around to get prices. Ultimately, for such an expensive job I did want to get multiple quotes and ended up going with a plumber who was able to get to it sooner and for a few hundred dollars less. But I would have no hesitation using Fire & Ice in the future.

Great experience - they responded within an hour by phone, gave us a rough quote over the phone (about 15% less than a larger company had offered), and then came out to finalize the quote and walk us through what they would do. We agreed, gave then a deposit check, and they were able to start within two days (less than a week after we had originally contacted them). The same folks we had talked to over the phone, and who had given us the quote, were the ones who actually came out to do the work (along with a subcontracted plumber). They came off-hours as agreed - after 4 pm - and had completed the installation so that they unit was operational by 8 pm (4 hours!). They arranged for the inspection, which happened within a week, with one minor adjustment (sealing around the outdoor vents) that was done quickly, and the re-inspection passed quickly. They were professional, courteous, communicative and punctual, very informative, and conveyed confidence in their work. Though we may have found a way to have the work done for a little less, I expect there would have been obvious trade offs in terms of communication and speed of work completion. I would definitely recommend!

Responded to email in less than 24 hours and were able to schedule service immediately. Showed up early. Very courteous inside home, mindful of not tracking in dirt. Took time to explain each system to me, (new homeowner). Systems are fairly new so not much was needed to be done. Honest about not needing any further service. No up-selling or anything like that. Would highly recommend. I would say price was excellent but I don't know what an excellent price is. I felt the price was fair and believe they gave me a bundle discount,

We are working with Yahoo to resolve this issue so that hopefully no other Angie's list member experiences this problem. We only received one email from you, not two as stated. We also have our phone numbers listed on our Angie's List page. Why didn't you try calling us? Although it's too late we would like to apologize for the inconvenience we may have caused. I contacted Fire and Ice early in the summer to ask for an estimate for an oil to gas conversion on my boiler. This job would also entail having a new high efficiency boiler installed. They indicated they were currently busy with A/C business but would be in touch later in the summer as things settled down. They also asked for photos of the existing set-up...which I provided. One month passed and nobody got back in touch. I reached out again and they said they were still very busy with A/C but would be back in touch very soon...which didn't happen. I called them and actually got a call back and they left a voicemail. I then proceeded to call them back within 5 minutes of them leaving the voicemail on my phone and left a message for them. That was more than a month ago and nobody has returned my call. These people must be very, very busy and don't really need more business. Not quite sure how they received the Angie's List customer service award. Doesn't make sense to me. I certainly will be looking elsewhere to have the job done. Too bad. They are local and I thought they might be able to do a good job.
Description of Work: I asked them to provide an estimate for a new high efficiency boiler and an oil to gas conversion.

Hello (removed member name) At our initial conversation we had explained to you that we are a very small company with three employees. We get back to everyone, but larger jobs get put on our waiting list till the season slows down. We weren't able to take on any larger sized jobs (especially heating work in the middle of the summer) due to how busy we were with A/C work. We thought we were clear telling you to hire someone else if you were in a rush to convert to gas. were not sure when we could accommodate you. We did call you back when we had a slow- down but never heard back from you. To answer your question, we have received our service awards because of our superior workmanship and ability to communicate to our customers. We get the job done right the first time. 90% of our customers will use us in the future. We are sorry we couldn't help you with your conversion and yes we were "very, very busy". Your statement of us not needing no more business is incorrect. we are in the process of interviewing technicians so that we may hire a new tech to help us expand as we have experienced an unexpected rapid grow of our business this year. We can never predict how busy we will get but we feel confident we are up front with our customers by telling them we are too busy too handle larger sized jobs from time to time. we wish you luck converting to gas! Extremely professional and responsive. Called me back within 1 hour. Arrived precisely on time on a Saturday. E-mailed me with follow-up answers within 24 hours. They were transparent with what needed to be done and what the urgency was. They were also transparent about the price before they did the job. I have noted that they were a little pricey, but on calling around it seems to be in keeping with what other HVAC vendors are charging (its the market that is expensive, not them in particular). I would use them again anytime. Excellent experience. I couldn't have asked for better service.
