This report is completely false. If you look at the top of the web page our hourly rate is listed explicitly. On every phone call we take from customers our hourly rate is stated. It is impossible to give an estimate on work that is unknown until it is properly diagnosed in the field. Please refer to all of our reviews that show the kind of company we are. It went very well with Arthur of Fire and Ice HVAC. I'd had 2 others come out to check the unit with no resolve. One found no problem at all while the other replaced the correct part with a universal part the wasn't so universal. Arthur came is and was immediately able to pinpoint the problem. He showed me the part and explained very simply what the issue was. He also brought my attention to another issue in the roof that could impact the heating unit if not addressed. Would absolutely use again.

I had called Fire & Ice last month because my boiler wouldn't turn on. As usual, they came the same day, and John & Artie spent quite a while on the phone with the Weil-McLain service reps trying to identify the problem with our newfangled, fancy-schmancy, super-complicated, high-efficiency boiler. They thought they had solved it, but a little over a week ago, I woke up on a cold morning to find that again we had no heat. They came right back, spent a lot more time on the phone, did more extensive work, and this time they seem to have fixed it. They put in a new ignitor, pump and something else, and charged me way less for labor than the time they put in. Since we're going away soon, I decided to get a wi-fi thermostat installed so I check remotely to see if my heat's working. John ordered it, and when it came in, he came and installed it FREE OF CHARGE, because in his words, "You guys have been through enough." The point is, these guys care more about taking care of their customers than about making a killing. At this point, I can't imagine calling anybody else for HVAC repairs.

They did a great job. Everything is installed and working much better than the older equipment.
Description of Work: The reason I reached out to Fire & Ice because they had previously done work for us replacing our outside air handlers. Our hot water tank was having issues, and we saw this as a reason to replace both our hot water tank and our boiler. They were very responsive when we reached out, and set up an appointment that worked with our schedule. They talked through different scenarios, discussed what was involved with each scenario, and the pricing with each. Also, since they were already doing our hot water and boiler, we had them service our air handlers as well.

I can't say enough about John's work on our chimney. We had already had him service our furnace and air conditioner, so I knew that he really cares about his work. But, I think the masonry job really brought out the artist in him. Not only is the new chimney a thing of beauty, but he did the work completely professionally, removing all the old bricks, cleaning up after himself, and all of it exactly on the schedule he had quoted. He really took pride in this job. Also, there were folk in the condo association who thought his price was high, so they went ahead and got other bids, all of which were above his. Another great thing about working with John is that he explains everything he is doing and needs doing, and he also explains ways you might cut corners to save money, and the pros and cons of going that way. I really appreciate the transparency with that way of operating. As I said above, John is a consummate artist: he takes pride in his work, and he likes a job that's well done. He is fair and honest, and a pleasure to work with. I recommend him for HVAC work or chimney work highly and without reservation.
Description of Work: John at Fire and Ice HVAC diagnosed the problem with the furnace as chimney deterioration in the flue. He inspected the chimney, saw that it needed to be replaced, insulated and a new cap installed.

It's a hot summer Sat and one of my A/C units stopped working. Called and left a message with Fire & Ice and they promptly returned my call. While my job was originally sched for Mon, Arthur came by on Sat since he felt the issue could be easily addressed and he was in the area. He opened up the unit and showed me where the problem was (wire burned out), and was able to make the repairs needed on the spot with the supplies he had on hand. Would definitely call them again for any HVAC issues.

The were on time. One of their personnel came and took a look. He spent about 30 mins on the property looking around. For a simple expansion tank replacement he gave me an estimate around 800$. i did the same with someone else for just 200$. I ended u paying close to 300$ for 30 minutes of almost nothing and a ridiculous estimate. Will never go back.

Hello [Member Name Removed], Your false accusations are unfounded. You paid us $275.00 on 10/8/15 via check #279 (not $300.00) to tune up a gas boiler and air handler which was agreed upon over the phone prior to our visit. There was a total of 2 hours spent at your home (not 30 minutes) to service the equipment. On top of this you mentioned there was a lack of heat and air trapped in the heating pipes. besides the heating pipes being drastically undersized we found a broken expansion tank, rotted out water feed/backflow valve and all the antifreeze needed to be changed out for proper freeze protection due to the heating lines being located in an unconditioned attic.. The $800.00 would have covered all this plus the cost to dispose of the old antifreeze. The company you hired for $200.00 sounds like they could care less about future problems at your home. Where did they dispose of the old antifreeze? We here at Fire and Ice do not take any shortcuts, follow all applicable codes and give all our customers peace of mind. There will always be someone willing to take shortcuts for less money. That is the easy way out and not the way we do business. Thanks for you time

The whole experience was first-rate. Sure, it cost a bit more than we would have wanted to spend - but this DID happen on a weekend, and the part was obscure and not easy to find. The guys were professional and thoughtful throughout. They explained what was happening, showed us all of the parts, and worked quickly and efficiently. I don't want our furnace to fritz out again - but if it does, I'd call Fire and Ice without hesitation.
Description of Work: We woke to no heat on a morning when the outside temperature was 18 - and our inside temperature was dropping rapidly. I called three providers off of the Angies list, then settled on Fire and Ice. They had a two man team here within the hour, despite the early Saturday emergency. It turned out that a motor was shot and would have to be replaced - but the part was old, and only one place in the Boston area carried it. Three hours later... after a rushed drive by the Fire and Ice team to Malden and back for parts... we had heat.

It all went very well; there were no surprises. My rooftop heat pump had stopped working. They came, diagnosed the problem and told me what my options were. I decided to replace the heat pump (it was old). They ordered and installed the new heat pump. Artie and Jon are competent, professional and reliable. They came when they said they would; they kept me informed on the status of the delivery; they answered all my questions before and after the installation; and I now have a working heat pump. I would hire them again and would not hesitate to recommend them.

In essence, it all went well and I was happy to have a working furnace again. I gave him a B on price and actually it was a B minus. He explained that his cost was $225 an hour. I'm not sure that it is right to include driving time in that hourly cost (or if you are going to include it, use a reduced rate). I understood that the initial visit would be $225 flat rate. He diagnosed the problem in about 10 mins. I know he had to drive to Boston to get the part (but I think he comes from Brighton). He came and installed the part which took 10 mins. at most. So the total charge was 3 hours($675.00) plus the cost of the part. I think he should have charged less hourly time (maybe 2.5 hours) I would use him again because he is so reliable and knowledgeable and when your furnace is broken, you just need it fixed in a timely fashion!
Description of Work: Jon was prompt reliable and friendly. He arrived, diagnosed the problem (inducer motor not working and needed replacing), explained that he would get the part by the next day and return and install it. He did!

I have been having problems with our furnace cycling during very cold weather. With the onset of a cold snap in the fall, this happened again. I had called another service provider twice over a couple weeks who had looked at the furnace before and made recommendations for repair, but they did not call back (you know who I am talking about, Fisher Churchill!). So I reached out to Fire and Ice instead. I heard back from them the same day. In spite of their busy schedule in the wake of that cold weekend, they made time to come out within a couple more days. After a discussion regarding the behavior of the system and the past recommendations for repair, the company acted quickly and efficiently on the needed repairs right on the spot. I found them knowledgeable and professional. The costs for repair were comparable to the estimate I had gotten from the other company the year before. Am thrilled with the result.

This was the second time we have used Fire and Ice. As expected, they were very responsive, flexible in terms of scheduling, gave us an excellent understanding of the options for replacing an ancient boiler, and did a fantastic job! We have total confidence in their work, and find both owner and team to be professional and great to deal with. Highly recommend Fire and Ice, and absolutely would use them again for anything related to heating and cooling systems.

Overall everything went great. They called right before they arrived, and did everything. They were also very knowledgeable about all of the equipment that we have and how to keep it maintained.
Description of Work: During the summer our outside AC units were starting to have issues and one of them broke down, we had them do a little repair on the hottest day of the air. Even though they said the units did not have to be replaced, they are about 10 years old, we got them both replaced. They also services our boiler in the basement, and the two internal air handlers. When servicing the internal ai handles they suggested a "breaker" that would would turn off the ACs if they started to flood.

Well, it was a mixed bag. I was desperate - and we were in a terrible stretch of hot, humid weather. If my regular AC servicer had been able to respond promptly, I never would have looked for anyone else. I think Fire and Ice specializes in emergency residential calls. a) Price - I paid a large premium for going with this company. My regular servicer would have charged $225 for a weekend visit. Fire and Ice charged $325. Then, the part under warranty needed to be replaced, and this involved about 90 minutes of labor. On top of the $325 diagnosis, I paid about $900 additional for labor to have the defective part replaced. In addition to covering the 90 minutes of labor, this must have covered lots of telephone time between Fire and Ice and the manufacturer Luxaire plus telephone time with me plus transportation time. b) Professionalism - I assume that these guys knew what they were doing, as the diagnosis was correct and they fixed the AC. However, the two owners are young and did not convey the professionalism of more experienced workers. They were rather rough to talk with, and complained a lot about the manufacturer they had to get the part from. As far as I was concerned, for the price I was paying, I should have not have had to deal with this. c) Competence - they fixed the problem. However, they did not have experience dealing with a lot of manufacturers outside their favored ones. d) Reliable and punctual - they followed through when they promised to come over or call me. Would I go with them again? Never as my first choice. But if I was in a bind and willing to pay a big premium, and if the job was straight-forward, then it would be ok.
Description of Work: I needed emergency service for my new high-end central air conditioning system that had been installed by a large, professional company 30 months ago. Of course, this was during a heat wave and on a Saturday. Fire and Ice came out within 4 hours of my calling - they arrived 8pm. Great response time. Especially because the company which had installed my AC and which was proviiding annual maintenance could only check out the problem within 3 to 10 days of my call! I was desperate and willing to pay for it to be diagnosed and fixed. Within 30 minutes, Fire and Ice diagnosed that the problem was a defective blower motor in the Luxaire air handler. This part was under warranty. Fire and Ice ordered a replacement part from Luxaire. This part had to be pre-programmed at the Luxaire factory, so it did not arrive until 9 days later. Fire and Ice returned to remove the defective part, and install the replacement part (about 90 minutes work).

My forced air furnace stopped working on one of the coldest weeks this winter and I called these guys whom I used once before. They came out within a couple of hours at the end of their day (emergency call rate) and were able to determine the problem (a regulator I think which controlled the flow of gas). They weren't able to get a part that night but got it the next day and installed it before the weekend and saved us from having to stay somewhere else that weekend. They knew exactly what they were doing, found a supplier with the part, drove to them the next day and cam back and installed it. Fast and professional work, just a little expensive but as it was an emergency, I was sort of expecting that but I felt better going with these guys whose rate might have been slightly higher but I knew they could get the furnace back up and running. They also replaced one other part they wasn't necessarily broken but it looked like it could also become a problem soon. So, they included that in their rate and so I didn't have to pay any additional labor. Definitely recommend although might be better to try to schedule an appointment vs. emergency rate if possible. I didn't have that choice.

John and his colleague arrived at my house 1.5-2 hours after my original call. I gave them an A for all of the ratings because they were so professional, knowledgeable and effective. I might have given a B for cost but it was worth it. What was more important was the discussion on my present system which is R22 based vs. the new systems. They told me about additional options to make a replacement of my condenser beyond changing everything out (Including air handlers). Much appreciated and I will most likely use them in future.
Description of Work: My AC condenser unit stopped working - not a good time. I thought that the main capacitor had probably broken because I could hear the relay trying to kick the system on - a worse situation was that the compressor was toast. Anyway, they came out quickly and could see the capacitor had exploded. They replaced it and good to go.
