This contractor is the living example of contractors having "a license to steal." He basically did the "bait and switch" with the pricing. Was extremely slow with his work, completed only the easiest tasks of the cellar renovation, and then sued us when we let him go. Our mistake was in believing him when he convinced us to work on a "cost plus" basis. Once hired, he worked extremely slow & expensively, forcing us to end his services with him after six weeks. He agreed to part ways and we paid him what he had done. Unfortunately the next day he broke this agreement and He then informed us that he had a relative that was an attorney whom would work for free when he sued us. His attorney in court told us that he had done this in the past with other customers.
Description of Work: Provider hired to convert our basement to a "finished basement." He estimated the cost to be approximately $80,000.00 but convinced us it would be cheaper to hire on a "cost plus" basis. After six weeks, He was paid approximately $27,5000 for the work that he had completed but had completed less than one quarter of the work hired to do. When then told him, "we no longer required his services." because we knew we were getting taken advantage of and knew it was not going to cost what he said. He was working with just him and his son. We agreed to pay for services he completed and then we agreed mutually to part ways. Unfortunately he lied and broke his agreement to us and turned around and he then sued us. We settled out of court for approximately $6,000.00 to avoid a costly trial. This was unjust. He was paid for the work he had done. He was upset that he would no longer be able to extort money from us and that we had put an end to him being able to take advantage of us. If we had kept him working the final cost of the project would have been more than twice that he had quoted us in the beginning. We saw this coming with what he had done in the first six weeks. We had to end it before it got out of control.
