I had Manning here to do several jobs including installing a walkway, patio and doing some general landscape work including some plantings spending somewhere around $10K. The patio/walkway work I have not complaints about...they did a nice job..even re-seeded the grass that they messed up during installation. The issue I have is with the plantings. They told me there is a 1 year guarantee on the plantings so when I contacted them in the Spring (they planted the previous fall) to let them know at least one of the plantings didn't make it through the winter all I was told was, "We'll tell Bud and he'll get back to you". Well after at least 4-5 more calls/emails and 6-8 months, I've finally given up. Too bad too b/c they did do some nice work but they just don't stand behind their work. I'm wondering now what would have happened if I had problems with the patio or walkway....guess I would have been out of luck.

This could be the best service I've gotten from any contractor I've ever hired, and I've had some good ones. (Check my other reviews.) My neighbor got a quote from them to cut down down and remove a large fallen tree limb that lied on our property line. Since I needed a lot more work done, I figured I would call them for a quote and include the fallen limb as part of the job. I called and owner Bud Manning came the next day to look over the job. He was right one time. I had a quote emailed to me two days later. Because the quote for the lawn replanting was $500 less than another one I had, and because Manning had so many good online reviews, I decided to hire them without getting other bids. So I don't know if their price rating should be an A or not, so I gave them a B. The best isn't always the cheapest anyway. About a week later, they came to do all of the work except replanting the lawn. This work was mostly tree work and this needed to be done before the lawn could be replanted, and we wanted the lawn replanted before hot weather set in. So we were very grateful to get the tree work done at this time because most tree removal companies had lengthy backlogs due to the March snowstorm that caused so much damage. The crew showed up a bit early on a Saturday morning and worked very hard and efficiently until all tasks were completed, about five hours time. They did a bit more work than was required (e.g,. additional tree trimming) and all tasks were done to our complete satisfaction. In late April and early May, they returned to replant the lawn. On the first day, they removed all of the old lawn and vegetation, brought in 155 cubic yards of loam, and graded it. Much of the old topsoil had been removed when we had a new septic system installed. Two days later they returned to apply the hydroseed. Bud Manning emailed me detailed information about hydroseed and its care. It's now late May and the grass has grown in quite nicely. I cannot think of one thing Manning Tree & Landscape could have done better.
Description of Work: One medium-sized tree cut down. Several small trees cut down. One large tree limb removed. Trees trimmed. Two sections of shrubbery removed. One large brush pile chipped up and removed. Entire back and side lawn replanted using hydroseed, 8400 square feet total. Included 6 inches of new topsoil and grading.

things started ok, responsive to phone calls/ email. I wanted to be home when they did the work but the didn't let me know when they were coming. Much was left undone. No mulch cleanup in bed by front door, in bed between steps and grill and there was no edging between the stones along one of the beds. After much back and forth, they came and did the clean up by the front door but never called/returned to do the other two items. While I was willing to forgive the missed hedging as they had hedge an area that wasn't quite part of the deal, I was very annoyed that they didn't finish the mulch and weed clean up in the small bed between the grill and steps. I am most annoyed after having paid them 180 per square yard of mulch and hedging I STILL need to buy mulch and complete the job.

Owner was responsive to my request for an estimate and worked around my schedule which was greatly appreciated. Work estimate was very reasonable compared to other estimates I had received for the same work. Crew arrived on time and did an excellent job removing the hemlock which was in a fairly difficult place to access. Cleaned up the site nicely, did a great job pruning the spruce. Even pruned more than I had expected and left it looking great. Work was done on time and in timely manner. Definitely recommend and will likely be using for future projects.

Once they were here, the tree work was done promptly and expertly. They came first to assess the work needed and determined that their equipment couldn't go through our fence gate, so they decided to climb the trees to perform the work, which they did without a problem. They also provided an assessment on other trees around our property to make sure we didn't have any concerns about falling tree limbs, etc. The only hiccup on the process was scheduling as it was hard to get an initial commitment on the scheduling to begin with and there was a misunderstanding as to when they were going to come to perform the service (they didn't have the job scheduled the day we were told they'd be coming). It took some back and forth (and time) to finally get the work scheduled, but we were able to get it done at a reasonable time frame.

They are one of the few companies in this industry that 1)communicate very well, 2) show up when they say they are going to, and 3) stay on the job until it's finished. Bud Manning (the owner) really cares. His crews are very conscientious. Some of the work was done with a price quote prior, and some was done time and material. In both cases I was treated very fairly. This is a great company and I recommend them without reservation.
Description of Work: Last fall I hired Manning to install granite curbing between my landscape beds and gravel driveway. They also pruned some large trees. This spring I hired them again to repair a bluestone patio.

I made initial contact with the company through the contact form on their website. Afterwards, I talked with a lady on phone to have someone come out and give an estimate. The three things I needed done were: 1. regrading the front yard 2. raising the front path, which floods 3. a rock garden or stone wall-- I have a ton of stones from the well digging. When the owner came out, it was clear he hadn't read any of the project notes and didn't want to be there. I explained about the regrading and the flooding front path, but he interrupted me multiple times to ask if I wanted lawn put in and to ask where all the stones I have came from. Before I could even explain that I wanted the entire front yard redone as a garden, he told me that his landscape crew was booked for the rest of the year and my job was too small. He could have told me that on the phone. I regret taking time off from work to meet him.

We are surprised and baffled by the experience you’ve outlined in regards to your interactions with our company during the estimate. We have been doing business locally for almost 30 years and pride ourselves on our integrity and professionalism. Given that a large majority of our business is repeat customers and referrals we strongly believe this attests to such qualities. You contacted our company via email on October 4, we promptly responded to you on October 5, the next business day. The estimate was then scheduled for the following day. We do our best to accommodate varied work schedules when scheduling estimates. During this time no mention of having to take time off of work was broached. Had it been we would have done our best to offer a time that would have not cut into your work schedule. In your review, you mentioned the owner had not reviewed ‘project notes’. What you are referring to is the description of the project you filled out on our online form. This form is for administrative purposes only. This allows our secretarial staff to have some background into scopes of work to ensure it’s a project that we’d be able to address the needs of. The owner is then given a brief description of such prior to his arrival for an estimate. We find your review to be muddled with personal perspective versus actual facts. If we were not interested in entertaining your project we would have never set up an estimate. Below, is a brief summary of our experience during the estimate. The owner arrived at your property on time. You had expressed great discontent with a previous company you had just worked with who was attempting to restore the functionality to your well. The concern the owner expressed in regards to the multiple rocks on the property was because this component needed to be addressed in order to accurately draw up a proposal in regards to grading, which is one of the key issues you expressed needed to be done. At no time did he express that the project could not be done. Instead he explained that the scope of work that your project entailed was something that he could not accommodate this season but certainly could address in the Spring, if that was something that was agreeable to you. He further explained that our company had ongoing commitments with other projects that had been delayed due to the recent weather which would not allow for any further work obligations to be taken on this season. To address the accusation that the owner was interrupting on a continuum; we’d like to explain that during an estimate we do our best to ask questions in order to grasp fully the scope of the work needed and the desired results from the customer. At no time during this conversation did you mention your distaste in his interactions. If you had he would have had an opportunity to explain the reason for the questions. We always welcome feedback and do our best to attain 100% satisfaction from all of our customers, both established and potential. We value open and ongoing communications. We do appreciate you bringing this grievance to our attention but again we strongly believe this was a case of misinterpretation as opposed to a lack of regard to professional conduct on our part. Should you want to continue this conversation we invite you to contact our office directly via email or phone to discuss the matter further.

Installation at first glance was ok .The patio looked lovely. But installation was faulty and the first rain brought water into the house (even though Mr. Manning had assured it would not happen) and eventually it got bad enough that my hardwood floor buckled and had to be replaced. Mr Manning became very difficult to work with denying any responsibility. I had several contractors look at the installation and all said it was faulty and caused the damage. He finally came out and repaired the installation but repeated requests to pay for the replacement brought nasty phone calls from him. I finally sent him an email saying I was going to small claims court which really angered him. Then he called saying his lawyer advised him to offer me $1000.00 not to seek legal action. I took it, even though the replacement cost $4000.00. I was tired of dealing with him.

The patio was installed properly, grades were very tight and patio was pitched away from the house. After the install the area got a heavy snowfall (3 feet approx.) accompanied but significant rainfall (2 inches approx.) Due to the fact that the ground was frozen the water could not flow with all the snow. The property was on the market and the homeowner had purchased a townhouse elsewhere, hence the property was not being maintained adequately throughout the winter season. A crew was sent over to property as soon as the weather allowed, that following Spring, since it was necessary to wait until the ground had thawed out. The crew fixed an area under the door, which showed years of rotted wood, where water had been dripping because of the snow issue.

The company accidentally damaged a pine tree and landscaping bushes along the property line between the two houses while trying to back up their truck into a space that was too small for it. The damage to the landscaping is not the reason I'm writing though. The reason that compelled me to put a note here is the attitude of the workers and the owner. When I pointed out to the crew that they damaged the bushes, the driver of the truck looked at me and laughed and said and quot;whatever, I'll call the boss manand quot; and laughed as he walked away. I called the company and left a message on their answering machine. 30 minutes later my doorbell rang, and less than 30 seconds after the bell rang, someone was pounding incessantly, and clearly angrily on my front door. The owner came by and heatedly told me that the bush wasn't mine and I shouldn't be concerned about it. I explained to him that the bush actually was planted with the roots on my property and said I didn't agree with him. The man was extreamly rude to me in his tone of voice during the rest of the conversation and then said and quot;I dont need this drama. We'll fix the plant as best we wantand quot;. I then explained to him how his worker was disrespectful to me. He said he talked to the worker and that and quot;he [the worker] had never talked to meand quot;. I said that was not true, and he went to get his employee. As he walked away he mumbled just loud enough for me to hear him swearing and calling me not so nice names. Apparently the disrespectful employees take their example from their boss.

As previously stated in the above posting, we DID NOT, do work for this individual. After a site visit and ongoing dialogue with the customer we were contracted to do business with we were given permission to perform the scope of work outlined within the proposal. More so, we were told by our customer that the bush/root system in question did in fact belong to them and had been previously surveyed which did confirm the lot lines. Prior to work commencing our customer did alert us that their neighbor (e.g. third party) was quite upset about the proposed tree work as they did not agree with the removal. We have been doing business successfully for over 29 years with the majority of our new customers coming by way of referral from other satisfied consumers. We pride ourselves on our professionalism and execute our due diligence on a continuum. Hence, the reason that once a potential issue was brought to our attention, in this case a phone call to the office, the owner promptly contacted this third party to resolve said issue. At no time were there any negative verbal exchanges or altercations of the sort. The only message conveyed was that we had permission from the legal and rightful owners of the property to do what we were contracted to do. Apparently this message was not well received by the third party which is unfortunate but beyond our control. At no time did the customer involved with this transaction express discontent with our company or our job performance.

My inquiry for a bluestone patio installation, stairs did not make it past the receptionist. While the company advertises online and on Craigslist, they apparently do not want business and have terrible customer service - as my job is too small for their consideration. We were surprised and perplexed to see this review as this is the first time anything of this nature was brought to our attention. We have been doing business for over 29 years and although at times things do happen beyond our control we strive to do everything in our power to make it right. We very much wish these issues had been broached at the time. The verbiage used in this posting is also puzzling as its stated that the experience was not 'horrible' and yet our company 'did what they were contracted to do'? We very much rely upon customer referrals for ongoing success and would never allow a job site to be left uncompleted or disheveled. We promote open and ongoing communication with our customers in order to avoid unrealistic expectations and to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Again, we truly apologize for your experience but we would have welcomed the opportunity to rectify any potential issues at the time the work was executed.

Manning tree service was professional from beginning to end. I had called several other local tree companies after the 10/2011 snowstorm. My calls were either not returned or in one case an appointment was not met. I called Manning on a friend's recommendation. We setup an appointment to review the work. Bud Manning showed up on time and worked through an estimate on the spot. I scheduled the work a few days later. The work was scheduled. Manning showed up on time on the scheduled day. The crew did the work fairly quickly. They did the work precisely as outlined in the contract. There was minimal damage to the lawn in spite of the need to drive a bucket truck or back a chipper onto the lawn. The crew cleaned up thoroughly on completion. I cannot comment on the cost as I wasn't able to get an estimate from any other local companies.
Description of Work: Manning performed tree trimming and tree removal at my home. I had several trees damaged in an October 2011 snowstorm. I had the damaged trees pruned or removed and several other trees removed. The work was a combination of cleanup after the storm and tree work I planned to schedule in the near future.
