Phenomenal. Gavin first came to see the house in mid-September. He gave us a quote -- the cheapest of three -- and aware of our time limits, moved other projects so he and the team could start almost immediately. Gavin and his team showed up each day at 8, and worked through to 5 or 6 every evening, 6 days a week, for 2 1/2 weeks. They fixed some rotting boards, removed faulty gutter covers, fixed the gutters, and scraped and sanded extensively. As with any good paint job, the prep took 3/4 of the time. Gavin suggested beautiful colors and attended to every detail to the end. They were trustworthy and were committed throughout to our satisfaction.

Excellent service, punctual, professional. tidy. Took great interest in choice of colors, painted various example shades on parts of house, made helpful suggestions for what parts of house to put the accent color on.

After contacting Mr. Curd and setting up a time to assess the exterior painting/light carpentry job on our house, my husband met with him at the agreed upon time. He was prompt, pleasant and courteous during the assessment and stated he would send a quote in a few days. Six weeks later, we still had received no word from Olde England Painters or Mr. Curd. He did give us a call subsequent to the pre-post of my Angie's list review stating that the job required equipment that his company did not own, and apologized for not contacting us after assessing our painting job.

Gavin and his crew did an amazing job. Attention to detail was remarkable, and the job was completed efficiently and punctually. Gavin meticulously examined our house exterior and clearly explained options and recommendations. The work was completed to perfection and they made sure to put everything they had moved-- furniture, etc.-- back in the proper place (again, attention to detail). Pricing was very fair. Gavin was great to work with-- personable, relaxed and thorough; our young kids looked forward to seeing him every morning! We could not have asked for a better experience, and will definitely hire them for future home improvements.

They were very professional and came first thing in the mornings. They did a great job and were very creative. We worked with Gavin who was very helpful in terms of making suggestions on details. He helped select colors which went together really well. This company did a great job and had great attention to detail. I will use them again in the future.

Gavin and his crew did an outstanding job, and completely transformed the appearance of our home! His color suggestions were extrememly helpful, and his understanding and implementation of my ideas/desires were excellent. The work was performed professionally, and complete clean-up was done daily. The house hadn't been painted for (too) many years, and Gavin took the time necessary to make sure everything was properly repaired and caulked before painting began. Although that made the project take longer than anticipated, everyone remained friendly and helpful throughout, and the work was completed to the highest standards.

Gavin and his crew did an excellent job. They showed up on time, did great work, and cleaned up each day they were here. Due to the construction schedule, they came back three times - they were very flexible with scheduling. Gavin was a big help in selecting colors. I was especially impressed with their willingness to do little extras (caulk around a skylight, clean the glass, paint the entrance door) that wasn't in the original work agreement.

Olde England has painted the exterior of our house twice, including the wooden fence. They have always been very professional and meticulous. They use high quality materials, are punctual and clean. They offer color consulting when asked, and have a remarkable ability teh specific paint color they used years ago and to pick matching colors when the original is unknown or unavailable. They stand by their work.

If all service providers were as fabulous as these guys, there would be no need for Angie's List to. From the first conversation I had with Gavin I could tell that he didn't run a "slap paint on a house" kind of operation, but rather that he approached his work from a craftsman's perspective. We gathered 4 quotes, and Olde England's was the highest by about 10%, but our newly purchased house was in pretty rough shape and we went with Olde England despite the small price difference because we felt that the work we would get from them would be well worth the extra few bucks. We were *absolutely* right. Gavin, Willy, and Popi (sp?) showed up on the day they said they'd show up, finished on the day they said they'd finish, and worked unbelievably hard every day in between. They showed up at 8am exactly and were cleaned up and on their way out by 5-6pm every night. I've never seen people work so hard for so long consistently. They worked quickly, but I never saw them rushing through any part of the work. the prep work was extensive, and they attended to every nook and cranny with painstaking detail. Plus, they were great to have around! All of them were exceptionally courteous and polite, played music quietly, never swore, cleaned up after themselves, etc. They all took pride in their work and had exceptional work ethics. The color picking was really tough, as the house has brick, a red roof, and stonework, none of which were in any way tied together by the paint on the house when we bought it. I was beyond overwhelmed by the color choices and was really nervous about paying a lot of money and spending a lot of time painting the place a color that I wasn't confident in. Thankfully, Gavin came in with a plan on how to pull together the red on the roof and the red in the brick so that they made sense together, while finding ways to bring the eye not to the reds themselves but rather to the details of the house, underscored by the reds. We ended up with 5 colors which sounds crazy, but looks amazing. I could never have thought up this color palate nor the way in which the colors were laid out, and I'm confident that it is the optimal way for the house to be painted. It looks less like we just got our house painted and more like we had a team of contractors come in and completely refurbish the place. Gavin said his goal was to "transform" the house, and that is in fact the perfect term for what they did. Every time I drive up to my house, I find a huge goofy smile on my face - I can't believe I live there! It went from being the neighborhood's embarrassing run-down Addams Family house to being one of the most fresh, clean, and exciting looking houses on the block. Neighbors and passers-by have been commenting on how great it looks, which feels wonderful! This review is long and glowing, but I still feel like I haven't given them the proper level of credit for the work they did. This was the best money we've spent so far, on any house we've owned. Hands down. I will hire them again without hesitation for any painting I need done in the future, and I have been recommending them to all my friends and family.
Description of Work: Exterior of house (2000 sf, first floor brick and second & third floor stucco, with 50' of covered porch) scraped, stucco repaired, rotted wood replaced, house sealed through caulking, windows re-glazed, several glass panels replaced, downspouts replaced & repaired. Painting included all stucco plus all trim (which is quite extensive,) porch floor and ceiling, porch columns and railings, cornices, eaves, fascia, etc. Two car detached masonry garage also painted including exterior walls, garage doors and trim. They did an excellent job. Assisted thoughtfully in selecting colors, advised on types of stain to use, protected (as well as possible) plants and flowers around the house, and cleaned up thoroughly. Gavin Curd and his team were unfailingly friendly and polite. Clearly they take pride in their work. They were on time and on budget. Their price was on the lower part of the spectrum of quotes we got, and they were worth every cent. We'd recommend them enthusiastically to anyone, and we'd certainly use them again ourselves.

Working with Gavin Curd and his workers was a pleasure. Communication with Gavin was fabulous. Several times a day he explained what they were doing and why. Gavin gave excellent advise on painting the trim. It was not until the job was done that we noticed the beauty of his recommendations. I especially appreciated his feedback on exterior wood issues which required repair before painting. Painters I have used in the past would just paint over problems. Olde England adhered strictly to the new EPA lead paint regulations. All areas requiring scraping had ground cloth collecting paint chips. All scraped areas were also power sanded with sanders with HEPA filters. It is a huge advantage to have a small experienced team of painters where the owner of the business is on site 100% of the time. Quality of the painting was a good as you can get on an old house without stripping the entire building. The level of detail work was excellent.
Description of Work: Olde England Painting painted our 90 year old house and garage which had not been painted in 8 years. Portions of the house were in poor surface condition including rot in wood gutters and and trim boards. Painting included one coat of primer and two coats of paint. All necessary carpentry was repaired. The project took two weeks.

Olde England did a fabulous job-- from start to finish. Gavin was extremely responsive and professional -- he was willing to come out to look at our property 3 times during the bidding process to accommodate my husband's and my schedules. He was extremely helpful and detail oriented as we estimated the job. His proposal came when he said it would, and he followed up with us as we were making decisions. This professionalism and responsiveness made an impact and encouraged us to go with his team -- even though his bid was in the middle among the bids we received. The actual job went just as smoothly. His team showed up promptly every day, worked professionally, efficiently, and quickly. Gavin was on the job everyday and did much of the detail work. He was helpful in helping us finalize colors, and offered numerous ideas that we wouldn't have thought of to make the final result really come alive. He and his team were extremely detail oriented and fully set up and cleaned up everyday. We've done a total renovation of our house and, as a result have worked with numerous contractors. We couldn't be more pleased with this experience -- or the final result. In fact, we're asking the team to price out another small interior project for us and are giving their information to all our friends and neighbors (nearly all of whom have admired their final work as well). Feel comfortable going with them, you WON'T be disappointed.

Olde England first painted our house in 1998. By 2010, it needed repainting, but the first paint job held up much longer than expected. Gavin Curd, the owner, not only remembered the house from 1998, but also accurately remembered the paint codes we used, which was fortunate, since we did not retain the old cans. The work was meticulous, prep and clean up was excellent, and there were no unexpected charges or other surprises. The price was very competitive.

The decking paint did not last but the decking is very old--we are now replacing it. I am not sure if this is due to workmanship or quality of the boards. I had expected more prep work but then at the price that may not have been reasonable. It is costly to completely strip decking and then repaint. We had another painter strip and repaint our 100+ year old door and that is holding up well. In the end and several winters down the road later, we decided to replace the boards and are staining rather than painting so we can avoid chiping between refinishes. We are using a highly skilled carpenter for this work and so cannot comment on Olde England's carpentry skills. In summary we thought Olde England was fine for basic painting but not stellar and we have found other painters that we feel do a more polished job.

Response from Old England Painting
I called and apologized to her after missing our first appointment. I showed up for a 2nd appointment, on time, and was shown the job by her teenage daughter. After talking to him on the phone I showed up for 3rd appointment, on time, and met with him who showed me around again. It was right at the end of the painting season and we were in the midst of organizing what jobs we could get completed. As it turned out this wasn't a job we could fit in our schedule. I should have called sooner but in these situations I assume that the customers are dealing with other companies at the same time who will have space in their schedule. I hope by our other 54 reports that members will see that we try our best to be responsive and maintain a professional standard in our work.

We had an excellent experience with Gavin and his two crew members (plus carpenter). Gavin was fast to respond to phone calls and scheduled a visit to give an estimate very quickly. He came across as very knowledgable and up front about the scope of the work during our walk-through. We knew our job would be expensive, but Gavin's quote was less than many that we received, and was inclusive of repair work and so we knew the cap amount. Throughout the job Gavin was always up front with what they would be doing, accessible, reliable and professional. Although they completed the job much faster than I thought possible (which is not a complaint!), I never felt as though they weren't giving thorough attention to all of the details. Gavin even took the time to return a week later to make a few adjustments. Olde England has a great reputation and they live up to it. We highly recommend them.

They came out promptly and gave me a reasonable and accurate estimate, $4,450, which they followed up with in writing (by e-mail). They gave me a concise list of all the materials they would need to do the job, accurately estimating how much material I would need to have for them, I believe it was: primer (2 big 5-gallon containers of Kilz oil-based white primer), ceiling paint (4 gallons flat white), wall paint (4 gallons eggshell Behr "Naturale"), trim and woodwork paint (4 gallons satin Behr "Soft Feather"), kitchen wall (2 gallons sateen Behr "Comforting"), some sandpaper, 000-grade steel wool, and 2 12-tube packs of DAP white caulk. I also got the apartment ready for them by cleaning out all the stuff (boxes, whatever), and, even though they didn't ask me to, taking off all the switch and outlet covers and generally trying to make the place as easy to deal with as possible. They came out Monday morning, with a crew of about 7 guys and, over 4 days, cleaned, scraped, re-caulked, sanded, and then applied 2 coats of oil-based primer, and 2 coats of finish paint, covering not just the walls and ceiling and trim, but all the woodwork--including the insides of the shelves of the dining room hutch. Their work quality was professional, and perfect, and the apartment looked amazing, completely transformed from a flop-house wreck to a bright, fresh, livable, and inviting interior that should be appealing to prospective renters. And the work crews were nice, decent people that I wasn't nervous about having in my home while I was away at work. Thank you, Olde England!
Description of Work: Painted interior of 1250-square-foot 1st floor 2-bedroom apartment: foyer, front hall, living room, dining room, rear bedroom, pantry, kitchen, front bedroom, including extensive trim and woodwork. This was no easy job. The apartment was in terrible, although structurally sound, condition: ceiling cracks, years of caked on grease, dingy yellow stains from perpetual cigarette smoking, and woodwork, including b-board all along the kitchen hall and the built-in dining room hutch, that had been covered with some atrocious varnish that had the consistency of sticky mucus. Since I already had bought all the materials (caulk, primer, paint), their price was for labor only.
