Signed contract on 7/2/2014 for full exterior paint job on our home. Work was scheduled by Mr. McDonough both verbally and in writing to begin on 8/25/2014. Painters never showed up. Had been given 1/3 of cost for job pursuant to contract. Showed up for the first time following many calls/emails and a lot of stress on 10/6. Weather was already becomming cool. We were concerned about our large deposit in his possession and the fact that cold temps would either cause work to be rushed and therefore not the quality we were seeking, or completely stopped due to cold and stormy weather. Crew worked for 3 days. At that time Mr. McDonough requested second 1/3 of contract amount. We were led to believe crew was there to finish job. Paid second 1/3. Ladders and painting materials removed that evening with painters not returning the following day. McDonough now had 2/3 of total cost for job and had only been present on our property for three days total at that point. After many unreturned called and emails, painters returned 10/27. One or two painters would arrive randomly to paint for a day and may not return after lunch or the following day. Many areas only given one coat with paint that was not paint specified in contract. Contract stated "primer and one coat of finish color." We continued to express our concern via phone messages and emails that it was now November and possibly too cold to paint. No response from McDonough. Only contact was our watching for him to arrive (or not) and drop off someone to work for a few hours and run outside to catch him before he drove away. He made no attempt to respond to us. We repeatedly asked whether it was okay to paint, especially following a day of snow/rain for 24 hours and him saying "we'll guarantee the work." His contract, however, states he does not guarantee the "paint." If applied at the wrong temperature, the "paint" would be what would be in question. After a few additional random days of one painter for a few hours, Frank McDonough informed us he was done for the year. He had other jobs and would return in the spring if we wanted him back. This was on 11/10/14. He left much of the more difficult work untouched. We were forced to purchase our own paint and complete painted parts of the house and porch if left unpainted would have looked ridiculous. This required hundreds of dollars and vacation time being taken by us to finish the necessary work. We are now left with a lot of work facing us in the spring. We hired a painter so that we would not have to deal with house painting and took a bank loan to make it happen. To be forced to constantly push this contractor to even show up and then be left with an unfinished job is unacceptable. The crew left suddenly, leaving us to pick up architectural pieces of the porch and shutters removed by painters from the wet leaves and ground surrounding our property. Our experience with this painter was terrible. Very unprofessional, unresponsive, and his crew was disrespectful and inconsiderate. I would not recommend anyone use this painter.

Frank was wonderful. We had had the house painted one other time and didn't feel they had done a good job removing the old paint. So we went with Frank this time because it sounded like they would do a thorough job prepping the house - and they did just that. They took their time and did it right. We feel confident that they did as good a job as anyone could do on a house this old! The always-courteous crew was good at what they did and seemed to take personal responsibility for doing a good job. And communication from Frank and the crew was great throughout. It's been over a year since our home was painted and it looks great. In addition, I just called Frank to paint some new clapboard that was replaced when we had some rubber roofs redone and he said he'd come out this week. Can't beat the response time!
Description of Work: Removed old paint, primed and repainted 2 family (approx 4200 sq ft total) 3 story home with Benjamin Moore Aura paint. Home was built in late 1800's so it's quite a prep job.

Overall the work was good..not great though. One negative was the amount of paint drips left on the floors in some of the areas we asked Frank and his crew to paint. It seems they did not use a drop cloth in some of the areas(hallways, living room and stairs). We did tell Frank we were planning on refinishing our floors after he and his crew finished painting, but I would still have expected measures to be taken to keep paint from dripping or splashing onto the floor. We asked that the painters be careful not to leave lights on or windows open when they left at the end of the day. Unfortunately, on a couple occasions we found lights left on well after his crew was gone. Overall, the work was performed on schedule and according to estimate with just a few minor problems.

Response from FM painting
As I used to refinish floors I knew the small amount of paint drops on the floor would come up easily when the floors where sanded, it's common practice among painting companies, especially when no one is living in the home. The cracking around the edge of the ceilings was due to the moisture from the freshly plastered walls which I had told this customer, not our fault and happy to have fixed it. Our goal was to have this project completed on time and on budget which we did.We also primed and painted newly installed spindles at no additional cost which should have been additional. With over 30 years in the industry and a great reputation we pride ourselves on quality workmanship and personally surprised this young couple had any complaints at all.

I thought they did a wonderful job. The walls were in rough shape and they were meticulous in fixing all of the repairs. They were so helpful and friendly and did a fabulous job - I am planning on using them again for the exterior of the home.
Description of Work: They painted the downstairs of the home and the entryway. They repaired a lot of damage to the window paint and and plaster. They also stripped the wallpaper in the kitchen.

Frank is Fantastic! In fact we are having him out again in a few weeks to paint two more rooms. His team was punctual, quick and clean. Frank was around the entire time for the job and did the final finish work to ensure quality. I would highly recommend Frank and his crew to anyone.

Frank arrived on time at my house on a Saturday morning to provide an estimate for painting a large home office. He provided the estimate while on site and we agreed to start the work only a few days later. Frank usually begins his day at 8am, but due to the fact that there were several small children in the house, including a newborn baby, he and I worked together to start a little bit later in the morning to accommodate my schedule. He and his assistant arrived promptly and got to work right away removing shelves from walls and a large wipe board. They moved all the heavy items such as several desks and carefully covered them with plastic. Frank filled all the holes in the walls, sanded down the walls and painted the ceiling, walls, trim, and much to my delight he also painted the radiator covers to match the trim. Once done he moved the furniture back in place. Frank and his assistant worked so quietly I hardly noticed that they were here. I am delighted with the results and how quickly and efficiently Frank and his assistant worked. Frank was able to complete the room in 1 day and the results are amazing. I would definitely recommend Frank and will most likely utilize his services again.

It could not have gone better. Best people I have worked with. They are coming back in November to paint my basement. Very reasonable and the best thing about Frank is he gives you the estimate on the spot there is no suspense about will he get back to you in a week. We are new home owners and all the painters we asked for quotes knew it and tried to scare us, Frank did just the opposite, gave us suggestions, told us where to go to educate ourselves and told us that the job was easy and could be done. He then gave us the quote and said he could start and finish in the time frame we needed. Made us feel at ease right from the start arriving on time to "hello I am Frank". Will refer him in a heartbeat.

Frank was highly recommended to me by a friend, and he was indeed very polite, knowledgeable, and honest. He gave thorough answers to all our questions. His crew did a great job with exterior painting, and they were polite and efficient. Frank even did the final touch ups himself. Because of the crazy weather this summer, they were running about two months behind schedule, and at times it was difficult to get a hold of Frank to find out where we were on the list. That perhaps is my only complaint. Overall we were very satisified. Price above reflects a 10% Angie's List discount.
Description of Work: Power washed exterior of home and deck, hand scraped and sanded body and trim, applied one coat primer, applied one coat acrylic solid stain on body and trim paint to trim and doors, painted iron railing; price included all materials.
