Phil returned my initial call the next day, then came by exactly when he said he would, spent time evaluating the job, patiently answered my many questions, and explained what they would do, and took some pictures. He emailed a detailed estimate to me the following day, along with pictures from another similar job. I hoped they'd be able to do the work several weeks later, before we went off on vacation and in fact they were able to start a week before that. I was really pleased with how smoothly the whole process went. They showed up an hour late the first day because of problems on another job, but after that they came promptly and worked hard. At one point it started to rain while they were working and they could see that one section of gutter wasn't draining into the downspout properly, so they added another downspout around the corner. They're not cheap, but they're very professional and it was well worth getting the work done right.
Description of Work: They replaced all gutters and downspouts, replaced wood fascia where needed and covered with aluminum fascia. They also repaired and re-pointed two chimneys and installed new lead flashing around the bottom of the chimneys.

A representative came out within a reasonable amount of time from initial call to do the estimate for gutter cleaning and repair. He said he would email estimate. I called him 2-3 times to inquire where estimate was. He thought he had the wrong email address. I gave him 2 email addresses to try. Said he would email the next day. That was about 2 weeks ago. To date, after almost a month, no email estimates have come. I left him a message clearly stating, if you are too busy just let us know and we will call someone else. No response.
Description of Work: No work was ever done as company never responded with an estimate.

I emailed initially, but got no response. Then it took a couple messages left with the answering service to get someone to call me back. A guy did come to the house, and was very nice, seemed interested, and said he would email me the quote. Never heard back. Even after leaving 2 messages on his cell phone AND with the main number, no one called me back. Very rude. I would never hire these people.

I spoke with Phil from Duffy, and scheduled a time for him to come do an estimate for 2 small bay window roofs that need replacing. I informed him that the other condo owner would meet him and arranged for that to happen. Phil did not show up nor was I called. I called him a week later, and he explained that he was held up at another site and came by and saw the two roofs in question. He asked for my email address and stated that he would email me an estimate the next day. This all happened July 26 and August 1. I never heard from Phil or anyone at Duffy.
Description of Work: No work was performed. Phil was polite on the phone, but there was no follow up or initiative.

I had contact with Phil Buswell, same contact as for the roof. He had already told me the gutters were in bad shape. Very available, answered questions, returned calls promptly. the work was delayed a month because of the rain. We were so pleased with their work on the roof, that I did not get another estimate for the gutters. (The roofing estimate was in the middle.) I knew we'd get a high quality job, and we did. The people with whom I had contact seemed to appreciate old Victorian houses.
Description of Work: removed all wooden gutters from large 1885 Victorian house, repaired/replaced fascia board as much was rotten; installed aluminum gutters and down spouts all painted same color as our trim. Re-routed several downspouts for better drainage away from the house. Same company had replaced our roof in March 06 (which ended a 12 yr leak that no one had been able to trace.)

Excellent experience. The customer representative, Phil Buswell, was informative, willing to educate me about roofs (including answering my many questions), and kept me up to date on scheduling. Because of winter weather delays, they ended up doing the roof while we were out of the country. On our return, the roof looks, and more important, functions beautifully. (No more leaks!) The clean-up job was superb. I felt that I was dealing with craftsmen who took pride in their work on a complicated roof and not with some impersonal company. And they were $5000 cheaper than the other credible estimate we got.
Description of Work: Re-shingled entire roof of 1885 Queen Ann Victorian house: 8 gables (including different styles of dormers) and a turret 50' off the ground. It required seven roofers over 3.5 days.

The back half of the roof on the house we had just purchased was a real mess: a mixture of old slate shingles, patched asphalt shingles poorly installed, and worn asphalt sheeting over a low-slope roof covering a back section of the building. We had several roofers come look at it and give us various quite different ideas for how to deal with it in a cost-effective way. Phil was persistent in explaining what he thought was the best way to go and providing the reasons why. He also gave us a competitive price. I think the quality of the job is good but could have been better if the crew wasn't asked to work on one of the hottest, most humid days of the entire year. They were nearly dead, as anyone would be after a few hours on the roof in those conditions. Phil was willing to include lots of small add-ons at no charge and was very responsive and easy to work with.
Description of Work: Duffy Roofing removed a messed-up, mixed slate, asphalt roof on the back half of the house. They demo'd one chimney to below roof line. They installed a new asphalt shingle roof which covered the chimney gap. They repainted the other chimney and installed a new set of roof louvers, new copper ridge cap, and new series of roof vents. They reshingled three bay windows and porch entryway cover. They stripped the old low-slope roof and installed asphalt sheeting on it. Also, they cleaned gutters.

The representative of the company (Phil) showed up to give us an estimate the day after we called. We agreed to his price and he had a crew on the roof later that afternoon to make emergency repairs -- the January wind storm had blown huge numbers of shingles off. The old shingles (installed by another company) were supposed to be a ''20 year roof'', and that's just about how long they lasted. Although the crew that came later, when there were two good days together, were energetic and the roof looks good, I won't really know the quality of the work until several years from now...one of the problems with judging roof work. It did bother me that they continued working after sundown, when it was too dark to see. I had to go out and convince them to stop until the next day. That's why I graded their work as ''B'' -- the possibility of error with unlit night work is too high for my liking. I would hire them again, but only with an understanding that the crew quits by sundown.
Description of Work: Emergency repair, plus later replacement of entire roof.

I spoke with Phil, who insisted that I had to be there when he came to take a look at the roof. I explained that I'd grown tired of being stood up for such appointments, and since the roof was plain to see, I saw no reason I had to be there. He expressed shock that companies on Angies List would fail to show for scheduled appointments. I relented, agreeing on a time when I was going to be home for a while. Not only did he not show up at the time we had arranged, he never called to explain or re-schedule. I could have called him, but I would have just given him an ear full, and he would have decided not to take the job. What a bunch of time wasters.

My mother has a 90 year-old house with a slate roof that needed moderate repair. Duffy's expertise, references, inventory of matching slate shingles, (everything about the company) was first rate. Phil returned my call the next day and we made an appointment for the end of the week. It was in November, their busiest month. Phil showed up exactly on time for the appointment. He had called to confirm an hour before and continued to keep in touch throughout the process. He was always very professional. Duffy was also very reasonably priced. Duffy is one of 2 roofers on Angie's Honor Roll. I've met several tradesmen and contractors over the past 3 years (we are doing an extensive renovation on our own home) and I'd give them the highest possible marks for responsiveness, honesty, expertise, punctuality, quality, professionalism, and price. A pleasure to do business with. This was my first experience with Angie's List and I was totally impressed with Duffy.
Description of Work: Repaired many missing and broken slate shingles on 4 roof sections. Repaired leaking roof valleys and surrounding slate. Repaired chimney cement pointing and flashing.

WE THOUGHT WE WERE GETTING A FAIR DEAL WITH THE ORIGINAL ESTIMATE, BUT DON'T KNOW WHY IT HASN'T BEEN REDUCED BECAUSE OF THE TIME DIFFERENCE. WE CAN'T FIND ANY OTHER ROOFER IN THE AREA WHO CHARGES EVEN CLOSE TO THE SAME THAT THEY ARE CHARGING.
Description of Work: A salesperson came out and gave us an estimate to repair a leak and some squirrel holes. He told us it would take 2-3 full days, with 2-3 senior roofers. He said the cost of supplies would be minimum, and that bulk of the price would be the labor. However, four months later, when he came to do the job, he said they would be out at noon, and they may have to return the next day. When they got here, I asked about the discrepancy. They came back the next day for just 3 1/2 hours. There were two people per day, it totaled out to 7 1/2 hours per man. We assumed that the balance would be significantly lower, but they are asking for the same amount of money. I spoke to the owner, who said they charge $122 per hour. It seems like he took the original estimate, and divided it by the amount of hours that they worked.

WE'D BEEN TOLD BY ONE ROOFER THAT THE WATER THAT WAS SEEPING INTO OUR SECOND FLOOR BATHROOM WAS DUE TO THE ROOF AND TO REPAIR THAT SIDE WOULD COST US $9,000. WE ALMOST TOOK OUT AN EQUITY LINE FOR THE AMOUNT WHEN WE SAW A NEIGHBOR HAD HIRED DUFFY TO DO SOME WORK FOR THEM. BASED ON THE NEIGHBOR'S RECOMMENDATION, WE HAD PHIL (JOE'S GUY) TAKE A LOOK. AFTER CRAWLING AROUND THE THIRD FLOOR STORAGE SPACE AND USING HIS BINOCULARS TO CHECK ON THE ROOF OUTSIDE, HE WAS COULD SEE SOME OF THE FASCIA WAS ROTTED OUTSIDE THE BATHROOM. HE DIDN'T RECOMMEND A NEW ROOF LIKE THE LAST GUY, BUT NEW FLASHING AND GUTTERS. HE SAVED US $7000 AND THE NEED TO TAKE OUT A LOAN. THE GUYS CAME IN AND GOT THE WORK DONE AND CLEANED UP IN ONE DAY. WITH THIS RAIN THAT DOESN'T SEEM TO GO AWAY, WE HAVE NO NEW SEEPAGE AND IT MAKES ME GRATEFUL THAT WE FOUND QUALITY GUYS WHO WERE MORE INTERESTED IN HELPING US OUT OVER MAKING A BUCK.
Description of Work: REMOVED AND REPLACED GUTTERS ALONG RIGHT SIDE AND FRONT OF HOUSE. THEY REMOVED ROTTED FASCIA AND INSTALLED NEW ALUMINUM FASCIA OVER THE EXISTING WOOD. PAINTED THE NEW GUTTERS TO MATCH THE EXISTING ONES. WORK PERFORMED ON A THREE-STORY 2-FAMILY HOME.

I NEVER GOT IT. AFTER MANY CALLS, HE NEVER GOT ONE TO ME, AND NEVER PERFORMED THE WORK. VERY COURTEOUS, BUT NO FOLLOW THROUGH.
Description of Work: I HAD LEAK ON SEAM FROM ADDITION TO MAIN HOUSE. BECAUSE OF POOR INITIAL ROOFING, THEY WOULD NEED TO STRIP, AND RE-DO THAT ROOF.
