After we accepted the Duffy proposal, things happened very quickly. A Duffy crew had completed a job at a nearby home, and then moved that same day to begin our gutter replacement. With frequent thunderstorms in July 2008 in the area, their plan to complete the job in two days was frustrated, but there were plenty of workers around for three straight days, removing the old gutters, installing the new and getting out of the way of the rain. The end result is exactly what I expected; gorgeous and capacious new gutters at every location, cleanup of the property every night, and attention from Duffy after the job was over.
Description of Work: We purchased an older home (1941) in 10/2007 and later determined that there were problems with the old and possibly original wooden gutters. We had prior experience with Duffy regarding repairs to the slate roof shortly after we took title to the house, so with great confidence, called on them again. Phil Buswell came by, evaluated the gutters, and suggested a way to handle the replacement. We decided to replace all the gutters and downspouts, to have the gutters snow-bolted to the fascia, and to have a type of mesh installed within the gutters to keep leaves & other debris out (plenty of oak trees on our property).

I contacted them and right away they came and looked at the chimney to give me a quote. They gave me an honest quote of what needed to be done. They came in a couple of days to do the work. The work seems to have been done very well. They didn't want payment until after the work was done. They said because I was a member of Angie's List, they trusted I would pay. They were very helpful.

The crew were very neat & courteous very professional came right on time. Philip Buswell was slow in getting back to me; it took several calls. Once the job started he was efficient and seemed to be quite honest in evaluating the needs and condition of our roof. I do have confidence in him, he seems more honest than most.

After looking at the gutters, Phil Buswell proposed solutions that sounded like they would resolve the problems. However, when I asked about his company's warranty he said they wouldn't provide one. When I told him I wouldn't do business with a company that refused to stand behind its work he said he'd think about it and put something in the estimate. I never heard back from him.

Prompt return of phone call and immediate appointment to assess the situation. Price given on the spot based on visual inspection. I was unsure how Phil could estimate the cost without a closer inspection, but he assured me that he could tell, based on the condition of the roof he saw that his estimate was in the ballpark and if he found more than what he was expecting, he would take care of it. He did find more and took care of it. I did not price shop so I don't know if their price was high or low, but I think it was fair to good. Anyway, I asked them if they could do the work on Wednesday (the quote was given on Monday) and they showed up and completed all repairs on Wednesday. If Phil hadn't called, other than a few telltale signs, I never would have known they were there. He came by the next evening to explain and provide photos of what they found and did. I researched roofers and they came away with a top rating, which I will confirm is well deserved.
Description of Work: Inspected a slate roof, replaced missing or damaged slates (19), pointed a chimney, other miscellaneous repairs. Also purchased and replaced a bulb in an outdoor flood that was only accessible by ladder.

Duffy Roofing is the best. Phil was extremely responsive and the quality of work was excellent (we have had no leaking at all since the work was done), but most importantly, Phil approached the job in a very consultative fashion. He saw the big picture of the other aspects of the project (i.e. possible removal of all or a portion of an exterior deck, interior drywall and painting work, etc. that we would have to have another contractor do). Phil was very flexible in discussing our options -- he explained what they could do with only part of the deck off and what they could do with the whole deck removed. And, once we had decided to pursue having the entire deck removed, he offered to provide us an entirely new roof (which would not have been possible if the deck was only partially removed) and the other necessary work for the same price. He followed up by phone to describe how the work went, and personally supervised the removal of the old roof so as to advise us on the state of the wood of the addition because he understood the big picture of the project. He was more concerned with making sure that the work was done on schedule and on budget, and at a very high quality than he was with timing of payment. I would enthusiastically recommend Duffy (and working with Phil in particular) because they were extraordinarily helpful in our achieving the best long-term results in the project for the least money, and serving as an adviser as we made decisions to get there.
Description of Work: Description: Our condo association building was built in 1908 and is brick with a mansard style roof, but also has an addition off the back of the house that was built in the mid-sixties that is part of the downstairs unit. The downstairs unit experienced relatively bad leaking through the roof of the addition. To complicate matters, the rubber roof of the addition is under an exterior wood deck of the upstairs unit. Phil from Duffy Roofing correctly diagnosed the problem as a combination of issues with the roof of the addition not being properly flashed, gutters in need of repair, and water damage that had caused issues with the brick not being pointed. We eventually decided to have the following work done, all of which was in a written contract: SPECIFICATIONS: AFTER DECK REMOVAL, strip existing rubber roof and substrate board. Remove right side aluminum gutter. Install new structodek substrate board, using plates and 3 ?? screws. Install new .060 fully adhered EDPM rubber roof. Roll rubber into gutter area, and terminate. Rubber flash wall transition. Re-point bricks as necessary in the adjacent side wall area. Cut in new lead counter flashing on the said area. Replace aluminum gutter to the left of the door. Install new .170 black modified bitumen on shelf above new gutter. Roll modified into gutter. Repair black slates above new gutter where roofers deem necessary. Rubber flash rear of fixed skylight over bedroom. Clean out front main gutter. Silicone caulk gutter back wall. Clean up debris.

Before I called Duffy Roofing, I had a couple other roofers evaluate my slate roof. Each was prepared to do piecemeal slate repair, but they didn't carefully inspect the roof for problems. It seemed like they were a little too quick to quote me only what I thought I needed. Normally, that would be desirable, but for something like replacing an old slate roof, I really needed trustworthy expertise more than anything else. Phil from Duffy Roofing came quickly after I called and did an extensive review of my house and the work that needed to be done. He's something of a perfectionist, but was clear about the options that were available to me: slate repair or full replacement. Once we decided on replacement (the slate was nearing the end of its useful life, and there was no way to guarantee near-term expensive repair), Phil was quick to put together a complete estimate, although there was a minor delay in getting it to me. Once the agreement was signed, Phil explained Duffy's process of house and property protection fully. About two weeks later, the dumpster arrived and the crew got to work exactly as described. There were some minor glitches (some drip edges were more complicated to replace than originally thought, so we decided to remove them from the job, and some plantings just could not be fully protected), but I was kept fully informed of them. The roof replacement crew worked quickly and efficiently. They moved the old slate across the roof and dumped it into the dumpster on one side of the house, avoiding lots of extra cleanup and potential property damage. John Duffy supervised the job setup and completion. The work was done by mid-afternoon. The cleanup was so complete that when the neighbors returned, they asked me why the roofers hadn't shown up -- they didn't notice that the entire roof has been replaced. The next day, two experienced guys who specialize in the metal work replaced the small roofs above the front door and front bay window, as well as the gutter around the front door roof. They also replaced an old problematic downspout, installed a pigeon guard, and did some other minor work. Everyone was helpful and courteous. The final job looks great, it matches the roofs of the other buildings in our complex, and I have confidence that the work was done correctly and will last. A roof is something that should just work; I'm happy I don't have to worry about mine any more. I would enthusiastically recommend Duffy Roofing.
Description of Work: Replacement of a 150 year old slate roof with a new roof with architectural shingles; replacement of two smaller roofs, installation of gutter around roof above front door, minor gutter and downspout repair, installation of a pigeon guard above a bay window.

I was very pleased with Duffy roofing. I had, had a bid on the work from another company, which seemed very high. Mr. Briswill of Duffy came promptly and gave me a much more reasonable estimate. He also seemed very knowledgeable about just what was needed and he made a lot of sense. The work was done as much on schedule as can be expected given the weather situation and I think they did a very good job. I would definitely use them again.

A year after moving in to an 1885 Victorian with cross gable slate roofs, one of the older valley's developed a leak. The valley had been spot patched by the previous owner over the years. Knowing that this older section of slate roof will need replacing in the next 12 years we didn't want to install a new valley just yet. Phil Buswell of Duffy Roofing came by to assess the work and schedule the repair crew. Phil arrived early one morning with the crew to make sure they knew exactly what items needed attention. I had hired Duffy Roofing when we first moved for a fair amount of other work (gutters, new flat roofs, slate repairs). The crew was great then and proved once more to be a competent, efficient team. Thanks guys!

We installed a new roof on our house which we are in the process of selling. I called the company on the Wednesday and by Thursday Phil had come by to give us an estimate. He was very sensitive to our need to have a decent roof to attract buyers without spending the earth. He also offered a 10 year warranty that we could immediately transfer to the new owners which I think will be appreciated by people looking at the property. They were also able to fit us in almost immediately; the following Monday the crew showed up to do the work. They were very professional, quick and left the property spotless. I was very impressed with the company, overall. I had the job quoted by another company and Duffy's quote was lower.
Description of Work: Installed new architectural shingles over the present roof on a 1450 sq. ft. colonial main roof, garage and porch. Installed detailing around edges and over front door to give it a finished look. Cut in two new roof louvers on the rear, cleaned out gutters.

Company provides excellent, white glove service. All repairs were done to my satisfaction on schedule and without any surprises. In some cases Duffy Roofing did more than asked. They performed minor related repairs to my roof and gutter. I'm sure what I paid for this indirectly but I didn't need to ask. They took the initiative. This is very unusual. Also, I was very pleased that the owner came by my house a few days after the work was done to inspect. This is a well run company.

I called on a Wednesday and explained that I had a secondary roof that was leaking into my kitchen. I was told that he wasn't positive, but he thought that he could send someone out on Friday and would call me back tomorrow (Thursday). His last words were that he would "get my roof fixed up". I never heard from him again. I guess this company doesn't need the business. Phil who came to give the estimate was extremely clear and specific about why we had problems and what we needed to do to have gutters that worked. He responded quickly with an estimate that asked for 1/3 payment. His estimate was roughly 1/2 of the 2nd estimate I got which was for copper gutters (which I don't think we needed). Company was ready to start work the next week so I left him a check, for 1/2 which is the usual practice. He returned the check saying that there was a law holding roofers to 1/3, as a result of some old scandals in the 80's. I gave him a check for 1/3. Other roofers have not done that. They were on time; courteous; did the work. I offered Phil that his men could come in to use the toilet and he told me it was company policy that his men never went in the house. Joe Duffy came to check the work after it was done; was dissatisfied with how they anchored the downspout, had them do it again! Gutters look great & work well.
Description of Work: They took down old gutter; replaced it with new aluminum gutter; checked the fascia behind the gutter to make sure it was ok; painted the new gutter with paint I had so that it matched the other trim exactly. Replaced and anchored one downspout.

Excellent service and quality work and I would recommend them without reservation! We called several roofers on a Thursday Phil from Duffy called back within a few hours and they were willing to schedule a visit early on Saturday morning (7:30 a.m.) to accommodate our schedules. Phil came and assessed the situation personally by eye-balling the roof and diagnosed a few probable causes of the leaks. He had a written estimate to us by 1 p.m. that afternoon. After getting condo association approval to proceed, I contacted him on Tuesday a.m. and he was able to get an experienced (28 years), salaried roofer over to do the work that day. All necessary work was done that afternoon, without issue and for the exact estimated cost and Phil called me personally to explain everything and give me an overall assessment of the health of the roof. Contract was short, fair and reasonable (I happen to be an attorney).
Description of Work: Our building was built in 1908 and is a mansard style roof, slate on the mansard part and rubber & asphalt on top, with skylights that were done in 1997. The top floor condo unit, which spans the entire building and is a loft style space, was experiencing some water damage in the bathroom and corner of ceiling in the adjacent room. They did the following work, all of which was in a written estimate and contract: Install new .170 black modified bitumen ruberoid rubber over the present roof, on the rear four window tops. Finish window tops with .019 cream 2 rake detail. Install new cement and metal flashing where the roofers deem necessary. Silicone flash the two rear bathroom and dryer vents. On bathroom window top roof, repair slates as necessary. Shim as necessary. Examine the rubber roof in the adjacent area. Rubber patch and lap seal as necessary. Install .019 aluminum flashing on the lower shelf area below the said rear windows. They also properly sealed off a few bathroom vents.

Great job. Submitted an estimate and told me he'd fit me into the schedule within 10 days. But they actually completed the job early - just before the snow storm this weekend. Also want to comment on the honesty of the company. Duffy had previously repaired a bad job performed by another company on the main roof of this building, before I was involved in the project. I had a comprehensive inspection of the house a couple of months later and was told that the rubber roof seams on top of the house weren't sealed properly and were starting to curl. Duffy, who could have earned money for another repair, told me over the phone that this was highly unlikely as Mr. Duffy himself had worked up there for a couple of days and his work is flawless. Phil, the estimator, showed me all the repairs they'd made. Everything was solid. No curling seams. This was the 4th wild goose chase I'd gone on because of this inspection, but that's another report.

Joe Duffy responded to my inquiry in a couple of days and quickly set up a visit to do an estimate. He evaluated the problem and provided an estimate to perform the work, explaining the choice of materials to resolve the problem and his recommendation. Everything was explained clearly and carefully. Work was scheduled soon after signing the agreement. The work crew arrived when they were expected and did a very professional job in stripping the old material, removing the old railing, finding and repairing the area where the old railing had caused the leak, and installing new GAF Roberoid 170ml. modified bitumen roofing with proper flashing. Cleanup after the job was well done. Joe provided a reference for a local carpenter should we want to have the railing replaced. I am very pleased with the service I received from Duffy Roofing for this issue.
Description of Work: Small flat section of roof had developed leaks. Material and workmanship originally used was not good (this work not done by Duffy) and a decorative railing was incorrectly installed. This all led to the leaking situation.

It has been an excellent experience. Ours was an emergency repair as we were in the midst of a remodel when the roof started to leak, holding up all progress on our remodeling. Within one week, Phil Buswell from Duffy roofing was able to visit the job site, get us an estimate & contract, schedule the work and then get the work done. We are very impressed by the speedy turn around and how it has helped us to get back on track so quickly with the bigger project already in progress in our home. Duffy Roofing was very prompt, knowledgeable and professional. Phil has excellent follow up. Any changes (which were minor) from the original agreement were discussed with us immediately and Phil came to check out the work before the crew left. We could not be happier with this project.
Description of Work: We replaced an old leaking slate side porch roof with new architectural asphalt shingles. Simultaneously we also replaced rotting fascia, wooden gutters and downspouts with aluminum.
