The original problem: water falling behind the gutters at the rear of the building and at the front porch, due to improperly installed gutters and/or flashing. As others have noted, the company initially responds more quickly to an e-mail inquiry than to a phone message. After the initial contact, all communication was with Phil Buswell, who was very competent, articulate and considerate throughout the estimation and work phases. What I liked best about this project was Phil?s approach to problem-solving. Unlike the two other outfits from which we received estimates, he recommended that we *not* replace the front porch gutter, as within six or seven years the asphalt roof would need to be replaced, at which time we?d also be replacing the covering deck and attached railing (in addition to new gutters and downspouts). His proposed solution: that the current gutters be retained and flashing be properly installed to route water into the center of the gutters. He also noted the sad condition of our chimney -- the top half of which was missing a considerable amount of mortar -- and said that they could do that work, as well.

Joe Duffy was responsive, clear and prompt, even thinking to get our work completed prior to a big winter storm. Very thoughtful. His price was right in the middle and we felt we received great value for the price.

The roof on our building (flat gravel with a center drain and three skylights covered by some kind of composite board and rubber roofing material) was approximately 20 years old, had been maintained by periodic patching and had begun to leak. We had been told both by the inspector when we purchased our unit on the top floor, and by a couple of roofing companies, that the initial installation was not done well. When I called Duffy in early September for a quote, they responded promptly, and sent Phil Buswell, a construction supervisor out to assess the roof and the work needed. Phil was knowledgeable, personable and professional. He assessed the project (detailing the current condition of the roof, and the work that would need to be done to replace it) and provided a quote on the spot. He then asked if we had obtained additional quotes, and when I told him that we had, and what the competing numbers were, he was very candid in explaining why their quote for comparable work was slightly higher. In the end, this explanation gave me a measure of confidence that Phil, and Duffy Roofing, knew their product well and what was important to completing the job properly. Once the work was scheduled, the job was started on a Thursday morning, and completed by Friday morning. The crew was efficient, and left a clean work site. There were incidental costs in addition to the initial quote, but they all seemed reasonable. Phil explained the additional cost and why it was necessary, and provided receipts of all of the additional material for our records. It is also worth noting that the work scheduling was largely dictated by weather, and as circumstance would have it, I was out of town when the job needed to be done. Phil made extra effort to update me multiple times the day before the work was to be done about preparation being made, and during the course of the work itself to make sure that I was comfortable with the progress and how things were going. Although I would have liked to be better informed as to why scheduling the job took as long as it did from the date that we signed the construction agreement in late October (a combination of permitting, weather and other work), Phil's communication in the days leading up to and during the work itself was excellent and much appreciated. In all, my experience with Duffy Roofing, and Phil in particular, was very good. In the event that I need a new roof in the future, I would consider Duffy Roofing again for the work.

Roof was done, start to finish, in one day. The worksite was left spotless -- if you hadn't seen the crew at work you wouldn't have known that a major project had been undertaken. The workers were polite and hard working, and the entire effort was done on schedule and within budget. The Duffy supervisors were easy to reach and responsive, and the price was very attractive. This kind of high quality, customer friendly effort is increasingly rare, but very refreshing.

Everything went very well with my roof replacement with Duffy Roofing. I found them to be very proffesional and responsive, always showing up promptly when they said they would. The day of the job the crew arrived at 7:30am and completed my roofing job including excellent clean-up by 3:30pm with a crew of 5 or 6. The new roof and chimney repairs look great and I can only assume that all is installed correctly since I did have some leaking issues. The only glitch with Duffy is the price--to get all this top-notch service you will pay a top-notch price---substantatially more for my smallish roof than the next closest bid for the same work in my case. This is a high overhead (no pun intended) outfit and may not be for everyone. That said, there's no arguing with the finished job and if price is not your number one concern then I would say Duffy is a great bet.

We used Duffy in the past to put a new roof on our triple-decker, and we didn't consider using anyone else to do this work. Phil Buswell and his team are very (uncommonly, in fact) responsive, highly professional, and do good work. I trust them to tell us what we need, and not any more than that. I would highly recommend them for any roofing work.

Phil Buswell responded to my phone call in February 2010 within 24 hours and gave me a price shortly thereafter. In October the other owner and I agreed to have the job done. Three men came and did both sides within a few hours. We are both happy with the job.

Boston permit was obtained in advance. Work was scheduled for a specific date. This contractor arrived on time with a large crew and all the necessary stock and equipment. By the end of the day the work was complete and the job site was immaculate. The workmanship is first class. This is the second flat roof I have had Duffy Roofing replace for me in three years. This company, family owned and in its third generation, is the "go to" roofer in and around Boston. I give them an A+ in an industry where quality is paramount and risks are not worth taking. These experts are reliable, responsive and friendly. They take pride in their work. They charge a fair price and stand behind what they do. What more could one say?

They were good and reputable, but their price was high. That?s why I didn?t use them. They do roofing work too. If I have roofing job, then I would probably go with them even though their price is high. The job needs to be done well even if the price is high. They are right in my neighborhood. They were very professional. It?s a family owned business. I have seen the other work they have done.

They did a temporary repair of a leaky roof (at no charge) giving us time to work out the details of the shingling job. We met with Phil Buswell, who is very knowledgeable and helped us choose what to do, what materials to use, and how to do it. He gave us an estimate right on the spot. Duffy did not do the whole roof because the front half had been done a few years earlier (by another company). Duffy made sure that we were satisfied with the shingles selected since the ones on the front half were no longer made. Duffy coordinated with a garden contractor building a patio so both could work at the same time. They finished the job in just over one day (a bit of delay due to an afternoon rain). Whenever we had a question, we found them to be responsive immediately or if not, shortly late that same day. They cleaned up after themselves. Duffy did a magnificent job of replacing our gutters some years earlier, which is why we came back to them for the roof. We are extremely satisfied with Duffy and will use them again. Be sure you get a cell phone number to get the fastest response.

They removed and replaced the roof. The work they did was good. I had a good experience with them. The work was done as requested and on time. The price was a little above average.

The way there was only one layer on the roof and he would cover the roof for $5,600. These roofers are all screwing people who do not do their homework and charge extra for any boards to be replaced. I am on my tenth estimate ranging from $6,000-$10,000.

The company was responsive from the word GO. My call was promptly returned, and someone came out ASAP to provide an estimate. Workers arrived on time, the job was done on time and within budget. Staff were professional through and through.

Duffy Roofing is fantastic, and Phil Buswell in particular, provides excellent personal service. We contacted Phil a few months before our condo association was prepared to spend the money on this job, and he promptly quoted it and was willing to stick by the price (which was very good for the amount of work involved) even a few months later. They performed the work on time, and on budget. The guys who work for Duffy Roofing are polite, hard-working and clean up after themselves as well - and working at our property is not always easy because it is on a very urban street in Cambridge without much room to maneuver equipment. Phil always calls personally to provide updates on how the work is going, and to answer any questions we may have. Wouldn't use anybody else!

During the heavy March rains this year, I experienced leaking in the 3rd floor apartment of a 3-family rental property I own. I got several quotes, including Duffy Roofing. I was very impressed with Joe at our initial meeting. He gave me a great overview of exactly what was wrong with the roof, along with what the replacement would entail. He definitely spent more time with me explaining the process than the other contractors who I met with. In the end, Duffy's price was favorable to the other quotes I received, and seemed to include a lot more. The company seems to take the extra steps to avoid any issues. The property is located on a busy street in Dorchester, and they actually ordered a police detail for the period in which they'd be lifting all the materials to the roof, just to avoid problems at street level. I found Joe, along with the workers, to be very professional in all respects. They were timely, efficient, and most importantly did a quality roof replacement. I would highly recommend them.

Great. Duffy is not the cheapest by a long shot, but they are very thorough, very professional, don't try to sell you anything you don't need, and are happy to come back if there are any issues. Definitely recommend

I haven?t chosen a company to do this work yet but I?m considering Duffy. My experience with them has been good so far. I spoke with the owner and he was very professional and gave me a quote right away. My initial impressions were positive and the prices seemed reasonable.

It was quite a simple process from start to finish. Duffy Roofing was on-time, on-budget and we haven't had a problem since the repairs were done. They even came back to help me put the leftover shingles (which weigh a ton) back in the basement. Great service!!!

Phil Duffy returned my voicemail very promptly, explained that there were roofers much closer to us who would charge less for the work because of the shorter travel time, and was very helpful in explaining what we should look for. He spent 10 minutes just helping me figure out next steps, knowing that there was no financial reward in it for him. A class act.

Duffy Roofing had done work here in the past, a few times. Gutters, slate repairs. This time it was wind damage to chimney flashing. Phil came out pretty quickly to look at it. Said he would email me a quote. Could do the work in a week or so. So far so good. But then over the next 2 months I repeatedly requested this quote, both by email and phone messages. May 5, I received an email saying "Hve it this afternoon sorry" ... but after several tries I guess I am giving up. Dunno, maybe it was personal problems? Now it's June 29 and I am giving up.
