Tim had a great estimate, did a great job, will be coming back to do finish plumbing after counters are in. Already gave his business card to my neighbor who is hiring Tim next.
Description of Work: I'm doing a kitchen remodel, relocating sink across room, and adding dishwasher. While I had a plumber there I figued-- tear out the old cast iron and do a new vent stack (15 ft maybe) and remove old cast iron drain pipe in basement, and fix piping on basement sink. I wanted all this done on a permit. Tim came over quickly and got all the work done great. I felt bad as my 2 yr old kept running water down on Tim as he was trying to fix the drain pipe. He seemed to laugh it off, not sure why she choose this day to play with water--- my luck. Tim has it all inspected, new pipe, everything up to code, priced right. I had got an estimate from another plumber on Ange's list in Somerville who wanted $6,800 for the same job. -Tim has since come back to check out a leak in the 2ns flr bathroom, he fixed within hours-- $175 bucks. This was a separate issue (not his work) -- -Tim will be coming back to do more work in my house in the future and do all the finish plumbing when I get the counter and sink installed, and new gas line to stove.

I wasn't real happy with him. He didn't seem to be very competent. He hemmed and hawed about the blockage and said that he didn't have a snake and would have to borrow one and come back. It seemed like it was constant that he would come in and do something. He didn't charge a lot of money and he seemed like a nice guy, but we ended up with a plumber working on three things and we ended up with buckets underneath them. It finally got to the point that he wasn't returning my calls, which was fine. He was responsive at the beginning. He didn't seem that competent.
Description of Work: I used Richard Tyler Plumbing because we had a leak in the main line coming in from the street and I had a leak in the kitchen. There was also a blockage, which caused a leak in the bathroom. He did replace the fixtures in the kitchen, which leaked, and he came back to work on them again and they leaked some more and the bathroom leaked.

I hired Mr Tyler to install a Buderas gas boiler and got a low bid of $6700.00 and went with it. It was a huge error. Mr Tyler came in as a three person crew (subbing out an electrician and another plumber) and installed the unit as promised, but dented the unit to the top and sides and set it into an existing recessed area where the old furnace was; by doing so he made it so the front lower panel cannot be taken off if repairs are needed. This was only the first of a list of errors made. The electrician installed the thermostat connection and reversed two wires, so the thermostat shut off rather than turned the furnace on. I had to diagnose and fix that myself. Mr Tyler installed the direct vent exhaust manifold outside upside down, so the air hole was facing up where water and leaves could come in and block it. I had to point this out to him in order to get it reversed. Mr Tyler also took a sledgehammer to my old furnace to break it up before carting it outside. He failed to notice a layer of asbestos insulation and I had to point that out to him and urge him to stop what he was doing for everyone's sake. The hot air exhaust was hidden out of view inside the ceiling so it would not be seen; this seemed like a nice option except it was later pointed out by the plumber I hired to fix Mr Tylers work that this stainless steel exhaust needs 8 inches of air clearance around it to meet fire code, and this is stated clearly on the pipe itself. Mr Tyler apparently did not see it, did not know, or just ignored this. This alone could have voided my fire insurance. Mr Tyler installed the cold air return using a plastic flex hose (like for a laundry dryer) that when installed to the back of the unit immediately shut down the furnace for lack of air. Rather than diagnose and fix this, he left the cold air return unconnected with a note to "leave this off for now" and with assurances he would be back to fix it. One year later, after a number of phone calls and emails asking him to return and fix it (and to which he never did) I had to hire another plumber to come and diagnose what needed to be done to make the cold air return work properly. This second plumber (Thomas Ahern of Cambridge) diagnosed the problem as being the flex hose needed to be PVC, but also pointed out that the exhaust was testing at 300 PPM for CO when a proper reading would be under 10 PPM. He found Mr Tyler had failed to cuff the exhaust manifold to the unit properly, and a 1/2 inch gap there was causing needless and dangerous CO levels to be in the exhaust. Mr Ahern also pointed out that the stainless exhaust did not have the proper air clearance and could not be placed in the ceiling rafters. I hired Mr Ahern to fix the issues Mr Tyler left me with for a year, then asked Mr Tyler to reimburse me on the paid invoices for the repairs or I would have to post my story with the BBB, Angies List and Yelp. He has refused, so here is your warning about doing business with this company. The work he does is neither proper or safe. I will see him in Small Claims Court. I have photos of the botched work and how it looks now, along with copies of the invoices and email trail. Update 2012. I sued Mr Tyler in small claims court and won a judgement for approximately $1500.00 Not surprisingly, the payments stopped every two months and I had to threaten more court action to get them to continue. At one point My Tyler claimed he had made all the payments when there was still over $300.00 owed. it took over a year get the money. I still have the sheriff's arrest warrant I could have had issued on him for failure to comply with the terms of the agreement. His response below is comical if nothing else.
Description of Work: Purchase and installation of a new Buderus G124X32 gas hot water boiler, 135,000 B.T.U.'s, Direct Vent 5 section.

Response from RICHARD TYLER PLUMBING
I totally disagree with this rating the member approached us while we were installing neighbors boiler. He wanted a Buderus boiler installed. We told him we never did one before. But because our price was half of all contractors he went with us. Actually everything come out nice but there was problem with the fresh air intake so we called Buderus and they said there was plenty of air in basement. The member saw some dust from his 1000lb existing boiler so he assumed it was asbstos. I know what asbestos is and would never expose anyone. He is a typical know it all and is trying to get somebody to pay for his boiler. His neighbor loved us and warned us about him. I have a perfect rating and would like this removed. Thanx Richard Tyler Plumbing.

I called Tyler plumbing when our tenant's hot water heater got dangerously close to dying. This was the fifth or sixth place I called for a quote. Not only did they offer the lowest price, but also agreed to do it the next day, on a Saturday. Steve showed up right on time, took care of everything in a couple hours and thoroughly explained how to use the new heater. I am very happy with the service I got from Tyler plumbing.

In the end, I did not commit to the bathroom renovations, mainly due to budget concerns regarding the entire home renovation project. But I would consider Richard in the future for my plumbing needs.
Description of Work: As part of a home renovation project, I requested Richard to give me an estimate for plumbing work. Richard was quick to respond and came on time to my house for the initial visit. Richard was very friendly and understood exactly what I needed done. He provided me an estimate in writing shortly after.

I wanted to replace the seats and springs on a dripping faucet but found that the shut off valves beneath the sink were not working and the faucet set screws were stripped. I decided to replace the faucet instead. I looked on the list for someone local and found Tim. I called him and asked if I bought the faucet could he give me a ball park figure on installing it and replacing the valves. He estimated 75.00. I asked when he could do it and he said next day he had a job going but could do it later in the day. I called him next afternoon to verify he was coming and he gave me a time he expected to be here. He was here when he said he would be. He was friendly and polite and did a great job. He even had to run out and get some parts he didn't realize he'd need due to the configuration of the supply line to my dishwasher. Despite this he stuck to the price he initially quoted me site unseen. I am very pleased and will definitely call him for future plumbing needs.
Description of Work: Tim installed new kitchen faucet, soldered new hot and cold water shut-off valves beneath sink and replaced old copper lines from valves to faucet assembly with flex lines.

The project was already started when I found them via another website. They were the least expensive and Tim & Scott didn't act they were doing rocket science, they're very down to Earth and easy to get along with. Their work had to be done in phases since I/they were coordinating with other tradesmen.
Description of Work: Plumbed all of our new kitchen, which included new sink, baseboard, toe kick heater, disposal, dish washer, ice maker ran new GAS line to new gas stove etc. Rerouted pipes in basement.
