It was an awful lot of work for what he got paid. It wasn't in that bad of shape, but I'm picky. The chimney is only 30 years old. I've had it re-pointed a couple of times because the wood stove really eats up the chimney. I had brick left over and I went down to the masonry supply place with him. Everyone there knew him well. I got a couple of bids. It was a good price.
Description of Work: He rebuilt the chimney from below the roof up.

Provider wasted my time, did an inspection to see how much business he could drum up instead of doing the specific work desired. I came home having expected the work had been done . I hired this company to clean the chimneyss. I asked for the price and arranged for someone to be home when they came. Instead of cleaning the chimney/flues they did an inspection and wrote up an exhaustive list of proposed services to the tune of over $6,000 . I did not hire him to build a new house! Hopefully provider will learn to be up front with their intentions; that they use the visit as an evaluation of possible services to offer rather than to provide service for which hired.
Description of Work: Fabricated a long laundry list of expensive proposals to do other work. They did not do the work for which they were hired, Provider caused unnecessary delay in my obtaining services because they did not do the service, hoping to squeeze enough income as possible out of work at our home.

Response from American Chimney Pros
Dear Ms. [Member Name Removed]: American Chimney Pros has been in business for over 18 years, and we have a lot of loyal, satisfied customers. My business slogan is "Working to keep you safe", which I take seriously. When I came to your house, I did a full inspection of the fireplace and chimney, top to bottom. I did not do a cleaning because it did not need cleaning! I don't charge people for something that they don't need. But the inspection brought to light repairs that should be done in order for your furnace flue to be in the best working order. I would be negligent, on your behalf and mine, if I didn't point these needed repairs out to you. If I didn't, and you had a problem down the road, who are you going to blame? Yes, my chimney company. So it is in both our interests that you know what needs to be done. I didn't charge you an inspection fee, and I have not and will not attempt to contact you regarding the estimate. So I am not out to take advantage of people in any way. It was unfortunate that you couldn’t be there for our appointment – only your non-english speaking housekeeper was present. I think you would have had a much better understanding of the work I was proposing if I could have pointed out the problems to you directly and discussed them with you. If you would like to discuss this further at any time, I am available 24/7 via cell at 617-201-2318. Best regards, Gary Ridge/American Chimney Pros

I have never used my fireplace outside one instance following a chimney sweep when I bought the home in 2009. I tried using it last week and my house smelled of smoke and I could see a little bit of smoke escaping the fireplace while I had a fire going. I was concerned there was a nest or something in it. I called Gary at 8:30AM on a Sunday morning. He works on Sundays and was available to come over within the hour. He inspected my fireplace and it doesn't require a cleaning. Rather, the issue is that the damper doesn't open enough due to inefficient design. He recommended replacing the damper, which would run $400.00 minus the $45. He then looked at my wood stove. He said the liner looks great. He managed to get the side door to the stove closed for me.He pointed out some openings that would not allow the stove to run efficiently and told me what to buy and how to do the simple repairs myself. I really appreciated this since I want to use the wood stove as an alternative heat source to save money. He checked out a third chimney and then the outside chimney and again said things look mostly good. I felt like he WASN'T trying to rip me off. Very rare!! When I can afford it I will have the new damper put on my fireplace by Gary.

I called on Friday, 10/18 and set up an appointment for 10/23 between 8am-9am. By 9:15am no one had shown, so I called, and the person who answer, said there was no record in his log book of my appointment. When I mentioned, I spoke to someone and set up the appointment, his reply was: "well, you got screwed". Needless to say, I won't be using them in future. Update to ACP's response; I called 617-201-2318 at 5:30pm on 10/18; I called the right company. As to my approach; if it came across poorly, it is because I had been waiting for my appointment to arrive. When I called, it was to inquire where they were.
Description of Work: I scheduled American Chimney Pros to come and inspect my chimney to make sure it was clean and to see if any repairs were needed.

Response from American Chimney Pros
Hi - I handle the ACP office, and inquired about this incident. The owner and his assistant are the only two people that schedule appointments in the book. Neither he, nor his assistant made an appointment with anyone for a Francis Avenue address. He suspects that you may have made your initial appointment call to a different company, thinking you had called American Chimney Pros. This happens occasionally when people shop around before hiring. You may want to check your phone records for that day and find out what number you actually called. As to his response? He is always very accommodating with his customers so my guess is that your approach may have set the tone for the conversation. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Did great Jon and a pleasant team. Gary turned up with a young lady and walked me through the quote. No pressure. Within days Gary and a helper came to repoint the foundation and prep the chimney. On final day I had 4 people working here, installing the liner and finishing inside. The house was spotless, the placed protective rugs and ran a vacuum to eliminate any possibility of soot. Job was fast as they worked flat out for 3 days.

I called Gary for an estimate. He came over within the hour. He had two other people with him. Both Gary and the guy who was going to do the actual repointing work went up onto my roof to check out the chimney. I had two other masons prior come to look at it and neither of them went up on the roof. They just eyeballed it from the ground. By looking in my chimney, he was able to see that we did not have a chimney liner. This is a fire hazard and my husband and I both know that. My husband had thought he had one installed when we had a wood insert installed in the fireplace a few years prior. So, while it made the project much more expensive, we knew it was something we needed and were happy that Gary spotted the problem. They came when they said they would. They did the work quickly and cleaned up afterwards. My husband had met Gary previously and when I told him that he had come by to give an estimate, he said, "Gary is THE MAN! We are definitely going with that guy." I had to agree. Gary seemed to not only REALLY know what he was talking about, he seemed to relish talking about chimney work and coming up with solutions to the problem. The cost of the chimney liner seemed to be in line with what we expected it would be. I think it would be cheaper if it was done WHEN the wood stove insert was put in. The price on the grind and repoint was less expensive than the other two people we met with quoted.
Description of Work: They installed a stainless steel chimney liner for $1500. They did a grind and repoint of our (very large) chimney above the roofline for $1000. They removed the old chimney caps and installed a new 24"x90" stainless steel chimney cap with a lifetime warranty for $900.

Member - sincere apologies that you did not get a call back. There are two reasons that can happen: your message could have come through unclearly (frequent), and/or your number came through as "unavailable" in the calls listing on the phone, so there was no number to track back to. Gary, the owner, always returns calls when he has a decipherable message and a number. I wish you had given it a second try rather than assume you were being ignored.

The first time we hired American Chimney Pros was a number of years ago, and we had them rebuild, line, and cap our chimney (at a former house). Their bid was the least expensive of those we received and the chimney looked great afterwards-- never had any problems. Last year (2010), we hired them to reflash and waterproof the chimney at our current house, work which solved the leaking problems we had been having. Their service was prompt and professional, and the price again was very competitive. Today, they blew me away. We had an emergency situation-- we had hired another firm to just sweep the chimney (through an Angie's List deal), and they discovered that the ductwork connecting our (<5 yo) oil boiler to the chimney had completely fallen off and we had been venting furnace gas into our house for who knows how long. We called American Chimney Pros on a Saturday, and they had a guy at our place about an hour later. I was expecting an estimate and so was a little concerned to go down to the basement and find him actually at work trying to put the pieces back together (how much is this gonna cost me?). He didn't think it'd be that hard, and unfortunately, was wrong about that-- but by God, he re-affixed the ductwork as best as could be done given that it had apparently been originally constructed with some missing pieces(!!). So now we can at least use the boiler until the longer-term fix is in place. Want to know what he charged for all his hours today? Not a freakin' penny. And then he left us a quote with zero pressure to sign, for the future work-- and which was half what this morning's firm had estimated. Let me tell you, the chances of us hiring them again are about 99.999%.
Description of Work: 1) Rebuild, line, and cap chimney (house #1) ~$2500? some years ago now 2) Reflash and waterproof chimney (house #2) - ~$1500 in 2010 3) See amazing story below

Gary looked the job over, then scheduled the installation. He showed up on time, accompanied by two young guys, who went on the roof and inserted what is purported to be a stainless steel liner. This took about 5 minutes. Gary then went into the cellar, saying that he needed to "finish up". About 5 minutes later, he emerged, got a check and left. Subsequently, we had a plumber in to replace the hot water heater. He pointed out that the liner was not connected to anything, so it was doing no good. It turns out that the code says you have to have a direct connection from the oil burner and hot water heater into the liner, for obvious reasons. Doing otherwise is a violation. Gary did not do the work to pull the liner out of the chimney so that it could be hooked up to the two venting units, and never said anything about what was legal or correct. I contacted Gary about three or four weeks after the liner installation to come and make good on his job, now that we knew the truth. He had mysteriously "lost" all his records, and had no recollection of the job. He maintained that he was never there. In summary, this person is totally dishonest, and is installing liners without completing the work, for which he not licensed anyway, but without telling people that just sticking a liner down the chimney does no good. He is extremely fast about taking your check for 20 minutes of work, then can't remember the job and can't find his records. Beware!!! He has been removed from Kerivan-Lane's recommendations, which they have stopped doing altogether, with a big reason being that several others have complained to them about this company. He is totally dishonest and I will have to sue him to get my money back. I have not yet verified whether the liner is actually stainless steel, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's cheap aluminum. We are still in the process of figuring out who can do the work correctly.

Horribly, worst experience I ever had! Repointed chimney but left mortar film all over chimney, it was so bad couldn't see red brick through white film. Promised to return to remove film and never showed up. Also hired to remove soot from roof (which was caused by missing liner part) but didn't remove any soot and damaged shingles. Tried to contact owner Gary Ridge and would never return my calls. Contacted attorney generals office and filed a complaint.
Description of Work: New stainless steel chimney liner installed in January 2004 which they forgot to install a cap for the tee inside chimney, never informed us of necessary yearly cleaning. In April 2009, they cleaned liner, installed missing cap to tee, repointed chimney and promised to clean roof of soot which was caused by missing parts of liner.

Initially they seemed good but the re-flash did not fix the leak problem. I called once after a heavy rain showed more leakage and they came pretty quickly saying it was just that they needed to use a stronger glue. After seeing more leakage they came again to "nail down some loose nails and add more tar". After a third rain and more leakage, I called multiple times over the next 3 weeks. They never answered or returned any of my calls. It looks like I'm going to have to find someone else to come fix the problem.
Description of Work: They cleaned the fireplace, added a stainless steel cap on one chimney, and were supposed to re-flash one chimney because of a leak coming through the roof (about $400 for the re-flashing work).

The company was very responsive and arrived at my house one day after I called them. They gave me a written quote in detail before leaving. I had several estimates from different companies and they were in the middle of the pack. I'm sure they would have been competent to do the job, I just was more confident of another companies experience level in doing this job.

OWNER SAID LINER WAS IN REALLY BAD SHAPE AND WOULD BE ABOUT A DAYS WORK TO REPAIR. WHOLE JOB TOOK THREE GUYS TWO HOURS AND THE BOSS KEPT ASKING HIS WORKERS WHAT THE HOLD UP WAS ON GETTING THE LINER DOWN THE CHIMNEY. (SHOULD'VE BEEN A ONE HOUR JOB?) FORCED LINER DOWN EVEN THOUGH THERE SEEMED TO BE AN OBSTRUCTION (NO WAY TO INSPECT THE LINER FOR IMPROPER INSTALLATION), TRACKED SOOT ON FLOORS AND STEPS (DESPITE DROP CLOTH REQUESTS), DAMAGED ROOFING (DESPITE REPEATED REQUESTS TO BE CAREFUL), LEFT MORTAR DEBRIS ALL OVER ROOF, INSTALLED CHIMNEY CAP AND MORTAR CROWN VERY POORLY. SHODDY, RUSHED, AND IN MY OPINION (FOR TWO HOURS WORK) WAY OVER-PRICED. AFTER HEATED DISCUSSION WITH OWNER AND REVIEW OF JOB, CHIMNEY CAP WAS REINSTALLED AND DEBRIS REMOVED FROM ROOF, BUT NO REDUCTION IN PRICE AND TRACKED SOOT AGAIN. FEW WEEKS AFTER JOB WHEN THE HEAT FIRST CAME ON DISCOVERED THEY ONLY PARTIALLY REATTACHED DUCTING TO FURNACE WHICH CAUSED THE BASEMENT TO FILL UP WITH COMBUSTION GASES AND FUMES. LIVID.
