John O Connor was very professional and reliable on all visits and quick turnaround on detailed estimate. I had obtained several estimates and John was very thorough and clear as well as pragmatic regarding the approach he would take, eg. digging 1 foot extra into the ground to repair and expose more foundation, where some small stones would be used to match for filler etc. The preparation work in particular was meticulous. The final product was the best the foundation has ever looked in our 25 years of ownership. They were also a pleasure to have on site - polite, quiet and excellent daily clean-up. Daily check-ins on progress and next steps due to weather forecast etc. I would enthusiastically hire them again. They were my first find on Angies List.

John and his team were FANTASTIC!!! Fixing our basement foundation walls was a big job and they handled it without ANY issues! John was very pleasant and detailed oriented and walked us through every step. The work was hand done to minimize dust and did take a little bit longer but it was sooooo worth it. They were very competitive with pricing and were dead on with the quoted price at the completion of the project. We are so pleased with the new foundation walls and the finished look. I would highly recommend them!!!!!!
Description of Work: Basement foundation walls had all old mortar removed by hand, walls were washed to get rid of dust, new mortar placed throughout and then the walls were sealed. Basement concrete floor was washed and then sealed properly.

John was very responsive and professional. He stopped by had a look at the foundation in pretty short order and provided a written estimate within a day. The actual work took about a day and a half. We felt the price was very reasonable considering the state of the foundation. I would definitely hire Renaissance again and recommend them to friends and family. A++++
Description of Work: We hired Renaissance Masonry to repair a corner of our stone foundation that had several stones that had fallen out and loosened. They also removed any loose mortar and repointed around the entire perimeter of the house. Our house was built in ~1880.

John was very adaptable to my schedule when trying to arrange a time to review the work. He provided a detail quote, which was broken down as requested. John and his team arrived on time to begin the work and completed all the work over 4 days. They were tidy throughout and cleared up all the debris at the end of the job. Very happy with the end result, very professional to deal with throughout.
Description of Work: Rebuild or repair 9 brick built window wells around multi unit condo building. Each window well was in various states of disrepair, some required multiple levels of brick replaced, some patches to pointing and stucco. Also several areas of stucco on the building required patching.

Kevin was very responsive and professional. He came by a few times to get a good sense for the job and worked with me to make sure the job was done the way we were thinking about it. He said he could start around a particular date (two weeks out) and to his word, he started on time. The job took two days and the repairs look great. He impressed our neighbors, as one hired him!

We live on a street in which many of the houses have had their steps replaced this year. Almost all were full replacements, almost all were at least twice as expensive as what we paid, and all of the results were inferior, in our opinion, to the work done by Renaissance Masonry. They have good judgment and will give you an honest appraisal of the options rather than selling you on a bigger job than you need. It is a pleasure to work with them and the pride they take in their work and how they do it is impressive. We're very proud of the way our steps look, and very glad we found Kevin and his assistant. Having owned this 1895 house for over 30 years we have had a lot of repair and replacement work done over the years. We would rate Renaissance Masonry at the very top of the people we have worked with,

As an Angie’s List subscriber, I am someone who always consults Angie’s List whenever I have big projects to do--because I know that Angie’s "performance reports" are reliable: I have an old Victorian home that needs much care, and, because of Angie’s List, it looks much younger than its 121 years. Largely the reason for this has been the mason, John O’Connor, who, about 13 years ago, repointed my whole house, with the help of his assistant, Kevin Burke. Then, I had water-infiltration in one of my apartments. Now, not since, not at all. And, last week, John, Kevin, and two other of their workers repaved and recurbed my front walkway to the point that neighbors stop me on the street to complement me. Really, they are complementing me for hiring these two men, who simply cannot do unsatisfactory work. And, along with their superlative work, they walk in with dispositions to match. It’s simply that good.

Kevin communicated about the start date being pushed back a few days due to inclement weather delaying the previous job. Then the start date was again pushed back due to almost a full week of daily rain. Though I knew he'd be unable to start work in the rain he still called to made sure I understood the reason for the additional delay. Much appreciated. Once work began the entire crew was personable. They cleaned up at the end of each day. I was pleasantly surprised when Kevin suggested adding a slight bit of color to the mortar to help match the bricks. He showed me what it would look like my filling in with the dyed mortar in a small spot.. Again, I appreciated this added touch and decided to go with the dyed mortar. The crew worked daily until the job was complete. There was a good final clean-up. Overall, it was an excellent experience from estimate to completion. I'd definitely use Renaissance again for my next masonry needs. A couple of neighbors even took his card because of how impressed they were with his work.
Description of Work: The entire foundation on the outside of my house needed repointing. I received estimates from a few masons all of which were fairly close. I decided to go with Renaissance both because of other positive reviews on Angie's List and Kevin (one of the owners) was quite personable and gave me a couple of options when he came out to look at the job.

Because we had a very complicated "repair" situation, 3 other contractors who came to give estimates tried to talk us (or scare us) into either replacing the entire concrete walls of our concrete stairway or telling us that the entire concrete stairway/walls needed to be replaced, that there was no point in trying to "fix" each of the front corner areas needing repair. John O'Connor was the only one who was willing to go through each of the areas of concern with us in detail, listening, offering options, describing what he could try to do with each of the parts needing repair, stabilizing, patching. He came back for a second on-site meeting to work out more details, and was still reassuring about the stability of the concrete steps themselves. He was thoughtful and honest about what he would be able to do, and gave us a written estimate spelling this all out clearly. As promised, when the work could start after the freezing temps had subsided, he came each day to do the work himself, with great care and thoroughness, cleaning up the area each night, protecting the wet concrete with wood supports, covering it if rain threatened, meeting with me to clarify progress and plans, etc. I can't say enough about the professionalism, ingenuity, and pride he takes in his work (when he was almost finished, he even offered to build up and level off the cracked bottom step to avoid people tripping on it and helping it drain better to avoid ice. This was not on the original estimate, and he did not charge us any additional for it!!) He was careful to block off areas he was working on, very safety conscious for anyone using the stairs during the project! Overall, a real gem who seems to actually enjoy devising ways of solving problems and doing the work himself! It is especially significant that he could have "scared" us into making a much bigger, hugely profitable project out of this, but he was ethical enough not to. If years down the road it looks like the stairs are becoming unsafe, we would absolutely trust him if he then said "It's time!!"
Description of Work: Repaired and stabilized front corner of stone wall where it connects with poured concrete stairwall of our unusually wide concrete stairway Redesigned, stabilized and installed a drain hole in other front corner (where original concrete stairwall meets poured concrete retaining wall) that was crumbling due to original installation (by another contractor) being sloppy, inadequately framed and poorly designed corner connection between old and new. Repaired and stabilized large gap in concrete stairwall at the top step of our concrete stairway. Reseated heavy iron stair railings in deeper, wider concrete footings that had been improperly installed years ago and were loose and becoming unsafe. Patched and leveled out large crack in bottom concrete step, also improving the pitch to allow water to drain off rather than forming puddles (and ice in winter).

Our experience with Renaissance Masonry was a very good one. They promptly returned phone calls and demonstrated flexibility in scheduling a walk through to quote the work required. Ultimately we hired Renaissance Masonry because of their ability to create a simple, elegant, yet very effective solution that other contractors had not proposed. They were very candid about the pros and cons to some of the approaches proposed which helped a great deal in crafting a solution that we were comfortable with. Pricing was appropriate based on other quotations obtained. They promptly executed the work and left the work site clean. Renaissance Masonry will be my next call for repointing and basement waterproofing work.

They were awesome. John, the owner, is everything you want to have in a contractor. He is respectful, he is courteous, they clean up after themselves, and I felt perfectly safe leaving them on the job when we left home. They were very responsive and we negotiated through any problems; it was just easy to work with him. Having a contractor that is easy to work with makes big jobs like this bearable. It was as good as it could have been. They didn’t have the lowest price but I think they had the best price for the work they did. We would call them back in a second if we need more masonry. His work was definitely better than the masonry work that we’ve had done previously, and his price was better as well. He negotiated with us about how to actually set up the job and the building looks a ton better than it used to. It is water tight, the basement looks fantastic, and the quality of their work and the way they finish it is excellent. I can’t say enough good about it. The quality of the work was excellent and they did well with both the large and the small things.
Description of Work: Renaissance Masonry did a really large job for my condo association. We repointed the entire building’s exterior, we repointed the brickwork in the basement, and we capped the retaining wall in our parking lot.

Work was done while I was out of town so I didn't "supervise" -- returned home to find very professional job completed and excellent clean-up. I'm pleased.
Description of Work: After March heavy rains the concrete block foundation on one side of my house had water seeping through -- clearly needed repointing. Contacted Kevin (and several other companies for quote in late March. Waited a while for weather to improve -- Kevin repointed wall in late May and also sealed joint where wall meets sidewalk.

After having a car hit my brick garage, I contacted John and another company for estimate for repairing a brick wall separated from the concrete and wood supports. John was very prompt in responding and coming out for an estimate. He saw splits and separation cracks that I hadn't noticed. John was honest and requested that I wait for the structural engineers report which matched his finds. The original quote for the garage work was $7600.00. My insurance check originally came out to be not total coverage and John said we could still work with what I received. Fortunately, the rest of the check came and I was thrilled to be able to pay John for the full estimate. He came with his crew and completed the work between 8-4 so it didn't interrupt my privacy at home. Each day the area was cleared and covered to limit the masonry dust. He even called my on the first day to let me know he wanted to close the windows that I had left open absentmindedly over the work area to avoid the dust from floating into the house. I was so impressed with his work, professionalism and demeanor that I asked him to give me an estimate of the rest of the house for repair. Again, John found areas that I never saw beyond the obvious. Scaffolding was up and down with nothing left in my lawn or driveway area. Hoses were put back neatly and everything was swept up each day. I would definitely call him again!!!

John and his crew were fabulous, arrived on time everyday, worked dilligently and thoroughly until the job was done. Cleaned up immaculately. Their work was clean and top notch. John is extremely knowledgable in all aspects of foundation work and offered some great solutions to issues we were having regarding water drainage. We are already planning on using them for future jobs including basement wall repair and front stairs. True professionals in every sense of the word.

Kevin and his team did a great job. They gave a competitive quote, arrived on time (or even slightly early) to all appointments, took measures to control dust and dirt during the work and did a good job cleaning up after. The stucco work came out looking great (made us wish we had done it long ago) and when we asked them to help with two additional jobs (filling in the crumbling bricks beneath the front stairs and re-cementing the loose bluestone on the patio), they happily agreed to take care of it and then did so for no additional charge. Overall, a great experience. We highly recommend Renaissance Masonry.

I first contacted him by phone. Call returned promptly. Then we did the rest by email & phone. I emailed him pictures & he gave me an estimate. Showed up when promised, got the job done. This was a "make it safe" low cost repair job. I didn't want, expect or ask for a deluxe Home Beautiful job. Got what I paid for. I'm happy. Note: he needs water & electricity.
Description of Work: Kevin & the guys repaired a concrete front stoop (three stairs) that was totally shot - chunks were breaking away. Chipped away the old stuff, set forms and poured new concrete. When all the old broken stuff was removed it was barely recognizable as stairs. I'm thinking to myself - "Jezz, what a mess, will this ever work out?" The result was fine.

AAA Masons. Kevin, from Renaissance, was very professional: returned every phone call, was punctual, friendly and very reliable. Despite poor weather, Kevin's crew showed up every day, never wasted a minute and did a very detailed, careful pointing of all brickwork. When they were finished, all dust and debris was removed. Over the years I've worked with a number of masons. Renaissance by far was the best. Absolutely would recommend them to anyone looking for excellent, professional masons.

Team arrived, worked fast, finished patio and rear steps much sooner than I expected; and then part of team began work on front steps, trimming shrubbery as needed to get to stones. Taped off steps as necessary until ready for traffic. Cleaned up debris, dust, hosed down stones, and John came by and talked to me several days after work was done, just to check on the project. A craftsman, old school, a gentleman, he and his team could not have been nicer.
Description of Work: John and his team of masons and a helper did major repairs on our front and back bluestone steps and patio. Project completed in 3-4 days w/minimal disruption to our routine, despite rain interruptions. Crew is dog and child friendly. Talked through the project with me, before, during, and after. Final bill was exactly $100 over estimate--because of a massive piece of thick stone required for a fix, but not on the estimate. I would definitely use Renaissance Masonry again, and highly recommend without reservations to anyone in Cambridge, Watertown, Belmont, Waltham, Arlington area. Top notch, great people!
