I called Asphalt Engineering to get as estimate for repairing a sinkhole in my driveway. The person doing the estimation arrived on schedule a couple of days later and went over what was probably causing the issue and what my options were. He was able to give me the pros and cons of the options and I decided to replace the first 6 feet of the driveway. I also wanted to sealcoat my driveway. I had a few issues with getting the estimate by email. For some reason my email address was not working for them. The office staff worked with me on it and I ended up giving them an alternate email which worked fine. I was happy with the estimate and set up a time to do the work. I was told that it would be done on two separate days, one day to replace the 6 foot section, and another about a month later to do the sealcoat. The day for repair arrived and the crew arrived on schedule and quickly removed the section to be replaced. They then went to another job and said they would return in the afternoon to do the actual paving part. I received a call later to say that they had run into problems at the other customer and wouldn't be able to do the paving part that afternoon. Since the forecast called for rain over the next couple of days, they rescheduled the paving for 3 days later. They returned at that time and completed the job. It looks great and I am looking forward to getting the sealcoating done so that the entire driveway has the same appearance. Even though there were delays, I still give them an A because they were quick to notify me of things beyond their control and were very good about completing the job as fast as the weather allowed. I would most definitely make them my first call if I need any other work done on my driveway.

Nathan went above and beyond dealing with the conservation agent from my town ( I live on a river therefore all projects must be approved by the conservation committee). He was always professional and willing to put in the time and effort to make the project go smoothly. His excavation crew, paving crew and administrative staff were exceptional to work with and communicated every step of the process. My driveway looks wonderful !! and my 86 year old Mother who lives with me is thrilled to have a smooth, safe surface to walk on. I am entirely satisfied and pleased with Asphalt engineering and highly recommend them

We had our old driveway ripped up and then expanded it by a large amount (46 X 26). Overall its a huge driveway now. Asphalt Engineering is such a pleasure to work with. The office staff (Jackie and Erin) are extremely pleasant, always available, very responsive, and knowledgeable. They make you feel as thought you are the most important customer they have. The quote process went quickly and was professional presented. Prior to receiving the quote my expectation was that Asphalt Engineering was going to be on the high side. They were actually the low bidder, and by a wide margin. I got 2 other quotes after doing the research. All 3 companies were highly rated, but Asphalt Engineering cam out on top with both their price and their service level. The morning of rip up, the team arrived exactly on time. They were great to work with and even did a few extra things I asked them to do while on site (running conduit under driveway - I supplied the conduit). They were professional and accommodating as we changed the layout a few times. The only issue was that the owner (Nathan) had said they could move our basketball net. The crew made it clear that it was not normal and after a few attempts to get it re-installed we gave up. I had them stop and they promptly removed the quoted fee for re-installing the net. Two days later, as scheduled, the paving crew arrived exactly on time. They were also great to work with and explained what to do after the install. The equipment used seemed high end and the driveway came out great. It looks great but we are still waiting to drive on it. I would definitely use this company again.

I usually don't write reviews when things go well or business as usual, but in this case I want to take the time to write one. The quoting process and scheduling process was smooth and fair. Considering the scope of the job, we weren't looking for the lowest price, but a company that would stand behind their work and be competitive. The price we received was not the lowest of five bids, however, we went with the company because of their positive reviews. The reclaiming and paving process went as scheduled. The reason I'm writing this review and the reason I went with this company is because of the service provided. Once the job was completed, I realized a small cut of the lot, adjoining our neighbors, was not complete. I called the company and we realized it was no on the original plans. The company came out within a couple of days and finished the small piece of lot. Within five months, I had three small divots in the lot. One within a week of the project and two five months later. These divots were no fault of the contractor, but Nathan came out and assured us they can be filled and would be covered under the warranty. In all three cases, the contractor was responsive and stood behind their work and resolved the issue. I was very impressed with this company's customer service, because based on my experience with contractors, it's lacking in today's workplace. I would strongly recommend this company to anyone who is looking for a competitive price that does not come at the expense of quality or service.

They were pretty easy to work with. They took care most of the paperwork and then just told us what parts that we needed to do and they were really familiar with laws and things like that so it was really helpful. They were also really flexible because part of our driveway had been painted in the past and part of it was a gravel spot and they were able to just do the paint to pave to process the whole area but leave the gravel spot gravel until the pavement is permanent and then we’ll come back and repave that spot but they paved the rest of it in the fall so that we would have it done for the winter.

Due to weather and scheduling, it took a long time to get a date scheduled but once it was set they showed up on time as promised. Very professional and thorough. Work was completed as promised and seems high quality, using heated crack sealant and seal coat. Only concern is a small amount of flaking of the seal coat in an area of a couple of square feet after 4 months.

We have an old asphalt driveway which needed rebuilding. There was also a concrete retaining wall next to the driveway which needed repair. Asphalt engineering responded quickly, and sent someone who gave us an estimate and recommended another company which could work on the retaining wall. We had gotten several estimates, all of which were in the same price range, but we were so impressed with Asphalt Engineering's responsiveness and professionalism that we decided to go with them. They had great reviews on Angieslist. We made the arrangements in mid-July, and the work was to start on August 8. We had some other jobs we needed done, so we worked really hard to line up the projects so the providers would not run into each other. We left on vacation for two weeks after we had worked out all the dates for all the projects. When we returned on August 5, we found a phone message from Asphalt Engineering. When we called, they asked us to go into downtown Boston to get a permit for the work. This is the first we had heard of the need for a permit. We initially resisted the idea as it had never been mentioned before, but finally agreed because it was so important to us to have the work start on August 8. Later the same day, we got another call saying that the city of Boston required a bond because equipment would have to be moved across a sidewalk. The bond was to cover any damage that might be done to the sidewalk. Ultimately Asphalt Engineering decided they did not want to do the job as, given the city's requirements, they would not make enough profit from the job. We gave them an overall grade of F because they cancelled the job at the last minute, and did not honor the agreement they had with us. This was very disappointing, given the good communication we had up to that point.
Description of Work: The provider cancelled the job so in the end nothing was accomplished.

Response from Asphalt Engineering
Bonding, permitting and deposit requirements are ever changing in the City of Boston and are job specific. When estimating a project we do our best to determine in advance what the requirements will be. Unfortunately, in the city there were a lot of changes and firmer implementation of policies that have never been required in the past. Upon the submission of your job location and diagram the city came back with the unexpected requirement of a $1,000 deposit for crossing the sidewalk (not a bond as we already had this with the city). Since all town required fees are the responsibility of the homeowner we wanted to discuss this with you and give you the option to pay the required fee so that we could continue with your project. At this time you said you were not going to pay the additional monies and wanted us to pave the driveway and simply disregard the city's requirements. This is not something that our company will do as it creates a future liability for the homeowner and our business. Since you did not wish to move forward we refunded your deposit immediately and removed you from the schedule. There was a lot of back end work with the city and continued communication through the entire process and we are sorry that you were disappointed with the outcome, as were we. This, by far, is the most professional provider that I have dealt with during the 42 years we have lived in this home. Their office staff are professional, polite, and extremely responsive to any and all questions. They all make you feel like your part of their family. The prep team arrived at the scheduled time of 12:00PM on November 4 (to the minute) and proceeded to excavate the driveway never stopping to take a lunch break. They were informative as to what they would be doing and what we could and could not do following their work until the crew came on November 6 to pave the driveway. On November 6, once again, the paving crew arrived right at 11:00AM to complete the job. After they finished, I was given an envelope that contained "How to Care for Your New Driveway!" with verbal instructions as well. The driveway looks great. Asphalt Engineering deserves the "A" rating they continuously receive on Angie's List. They are the best.

It went extremely well. Nathan came to my home to discuss the job and answer any questions. The old driveway was not pitched correctly so the car would scrape the street when I pulled out into the road. We discussed the problem and he recommended how this could be fixed. I also wanted a parking area created in front of the house. I received a detailed estimate in two days via e-mail. As soon as I accepted the contract, the office staff contacted me to set up a work date, which was about 2 weeks afterward. A permit was required from the city for the work in the roadway; this was obtained by the company before the work began and the cost of the permit was added into the estimate. The work was completed in two parts. The crew removed the old asphalt, prepared the work areas, and put down the gravel on one afternoon, and returned the next day to pave. Communication with the office staff was easy and excellent. They were readily available via e-mail or phone and always responded to my questions quickly and courteously. I was also provided with informational materials about the care and maintenance of the new asphalt, which is a great reference. The scheduled work dates were moved twice to accommodate larger commercial jobs. This was not a problem for me and the office staff kept me up to date. So, a little scheduling flexibility may be needed on the part of the homeowner. My neighbors have commented about how great the paving looks. The results are beautiful...and the car no longer hits the roadway when I pull out into the street. Note: Asphalt Engineer offers a 5% discount for Angie's List members; this is reflected in the price quoted above.

The estimator measured the driveway, drew the planned direction of water flow, designed the new drainage plan and explained the process, timing and all the details thoroughly. The estimate was received via email two days later, then immediately revised to reflect the Angie's List discount which I originally forgot to mention. The work was scheduled for two weeks from the first meeting. During the time between the estimator's work and the start of the job Asphalt Engineering's office kept me up to date on the arrangements with Dig Safe, additional utility companies, our town's permitting and police traffic details. Exactly two weeks later the crew arrived to excavate the old asphalt, ripping up a very thick original driveway and the thin topcoat added years later, adding processed stone and regrading the sub-base. They also replaced a small broken drain basin with a larger one, connecting it to the existing drain pipe that extends through a retaining wall. Compaction was done with a vibratory roller. This process was completed very well in a quick two and a half hours. I was kept informed of the details and timing of the next steps by the very efficient office staff. Two days later the paving crew laid down the asphalt in two layers with each being compacted with the same roller. This part of the contract work was also done very efficiently as well. The grading was checked for proper water runoff by pouring water onto the entire area. The seams at the sidewalk and street were clean and neat. Their thorough cleanup was a nice ending touch. Followup care and maintenance instructions, from the initial cure period to long term maintenance, were left before departing. Once again, the office followed up with customer service questions and final billing was processed the following day. Invoices were emailed saving time and paper. Having worked for a multinational road construction company I had very high expectations for the work to be done. Asphalt Engineering made the job look easy and the results are exceptional. The cost is competitive and proportional to the quality of the work performed. The operations of the company's office and their customer service was spectacular. Overall, I am extremely pleased. I would use Asphalt Engineering again without hesitation.
Description of Work: Asphalt Engineering obtained all required permits from the town, arranged for Dig Safe and additional utilities to delineate underground electric, water, gas, power, and cable/internet/phone lines as well as police traffic details. The crews excavated two layers of old pavement, regraded sub-base, installed larger drain basin and connected it to through wall discharge pipe, paved driveway with two layers of asphalt.

Extremely profession and responsive organization! Asphalt Engineering followed up with us numerous times - first to make sure we received the quotes they sent and to see if we had any questions, then to book the dates, actual services and then how did it go? It was the best customer service experience I've ever had with a contractor doing work at my home. Our driveway pad had a large trench across it going to a drain we had installed a couple of years ago. We finally decided to rip up the old driveway and replace it. I always dread looking for a contractor to do work at my home and from the first meeting with Nathan, I knew we would go with Asphalt Engineering. I brought them in to give us quotes based upon the reviews we saw on Angie's list and was pleased with the quotes and love the results. Our new driveway looks beautiful... extremely happy and would (will) definitely be recommending Asphalt Engineering to friends and family. Will also bring them back to do the seal-coating next spring.
