This is an old house and a small but old and very steep driveway with questionable drainage at the bottom. AE went out of their way to ensure it was done correctly and that the work would hold up well over time, without drainage problems arising even from severe weather events. They methodically established what was actually needed which turned out to be a lower cost solution for me, but they clearly went through a rigorous process to make this determination. I now feel confident that the work will be long lasting, and I paid less than I was anticipating I might need to. Dealing with AE is like dealing with a professional engineering or architectural firm. Their estimates are detailed and accompanied by blueprint-style schematics. A professional project coordinator is assigned (Laura was great!!) and keeps you well informed about everything through the whole process. On a technical aspect of our job, an AE owner Nathan contacted me several times and helped me as a layman make the best decision possible. AE is a very solid company and I'd happily go back to them again and recommend them to others.

I called and left a message with a very pleasant woman, therefore the A for professionalism. I told her that I wanted my driveway sealed and she asked if I had been a customer previously. I had contacted Asphalt Engineering for a quote for paving my driveway, but did not use them a few years ago. I did not receive a phone call from them regarding sealing the driveway.

Hi there [Removed member name] - Thank you for your review and bringing this to our attention so I can be sure no other prospective clients have the same experience. If I had known you had a concern I would have been sure to resolve it for you. First and foremost I truly apologize that you reached out and did not hear back from anyone. We strive to have prompt communication and have several members of our office team ready to assist all of our clients' needs. I did do a back search of your phone number in our phone system starting March 2015 and was unable to find any inbound calls. It may be that you had called from another number. I wanted to make sure that this was addressed with whomever you spoke with as this is certainly not how we do business. Since we had done a previous estimate for your property in 2012 it would have been simple for us to use the measurements from the diagram on file and provide you with an estimate same day. I would love the opportunity to turn around your experience. My direct number is 508-541-8300 x302. I will send you an email as well. ~Erin Landry : Director of Operations

Asphalt Engineering was wonderful to work with. The interaction with the staff on the phone throughout the process was professional and kind. When they had to shift my schedule by a day, they called to let me know and called again when I didn't respond to be sure that I was aware of the change. The estimator was courteous, on-time, and thorough. The team that showed up to do the work was large and completed the repair very quickly -- couldn't have been on site more than an hour. Highly recommend these folks.
Description of Work: Repaired about 1/4 of driveway that had heaves and crumbling edges.
The contractor did an excellent job. They were on time and performed as promised. I note that the concrete storm water swale initially was not installed properly by their subcontractor so they immediately fixed the installation at their own cost without any hassle, which was much appreciated.

I called Asphalt Engineering on Monday 7/20/2015 to schedule the work. I was told by the woman who answered the phone she would get with her supervisor to review the schedule and get back to me. No one called me back. I called on Wednesday afternoon 7/2/2015 to see if I could get the work scheduled. At that time I noticed that I had an 'Estimate' and not a 'Quote'. I am a Professional Mechanical Engineer and an experienced Project Manager. As such I have let contracts on multi-million dollar projects. I expect a quote, not just an estimate. I spoke to Erin. She said the number on my 'Estimate' was firm. I said I wanted a document that said 'Quote' on it. She told me Asphalt Engineering was no longer interested in my business. I found Erin's conduct to be unprofessional. She was impolite. I feel my request was completely reasonable, and asked for in a professional manner. I am still interested in having the work done by Asphalt Engineering. I was impressed by the man they sent out to inspect my job. I was confident Asphalt Engineering was technically capable of performing the work. I am not at all impressed by Asphalt Engineering's office staff, however. In my experience they were neglectful and unprofessional. Edward A. Bianchi PE

[member name removed] - We apologize that you feel this way. We strive to provide a quality service experience for all of our potential clients. Just as you, the consumer, make an educated decision and are able to decide who you want to hire to service your projects, we as a company have to protect our team and business by being wise in respect to whom we choose to service. To clarify, I did not state that we were not interested in servicing your project because you wanted a "quote" instead of an "estimate". I stated we were not interested in servicing your project because of your approach and disrespectful nature with the office team, Annette specifically, and myself. The tone of your voice, condescending nature and hostile approach were off-putting and offensive. We have worked hard to build a reputation that our clients can trust. When a client is already showing these personality traits and behaving in a way that implies lack of trust in our company, we simply feel another company may be better fit to meet their needs. We wish you nothing but the best of luck with your project. ~Erin Landry Director of Operations

When I first contacted Asphalt Engineering, Erin responded extremely quick, I was very impressed. We set up a date and time for an estimator to come out to my house to see exactly what I wanted and Paul showed up at the exact time. We discussed what I wanted to do, and i told him I needed enough space to park cars across my driveway. I told him that I wanted to widen the driveway 6 feet from the side of the house. He either didn't understand me or wasn't paying attention to what I wanted and measured the expansion 6 feet from the edge of garage door. They gave me an estimate of $5428.00. I told them that I had gotten other estimates ranging from $4600 to $4900. After some negotiations, we agreed that they would do the job for $4600, but that I'd have to wait until the Spring of 2015. Assuming that Paul had the measurements the way I wanted, I gave them the approval for the job. They were scheduled to start on April 27 and complete the work a couple of days later, but they didn't show up until the 28th to rip out the old driveway and prep the ground for the new driveway. When I got home to check the work, I noticed that the width wasn't wide enough.I tried to get them to make it wider by the original 2 feet that I wanted, but they just went ahead and laid in the asphalt without making the correction anyways and left. I complained, and the owner of the company, Nathan came out and agreed that a third car wouldn't fit. Then I asked him to make it wider as I originally specified, and he said he could, but that it would cost me another $1250 and that they couldn't do it until June 24-25th. I had no other choice but to accept to pay them. In summary, instead of having the complete job done for the original $4600, it costed me $5850. Instead of finishing the job in 3 days as agreed, it took them almost 3 months to finish it. Instead of getting a new unblemished driveway, I got second rate driveway with an ugly seem running down the completely length of the driveway.

Hi there, As you know I worked very closely with you on your project as did our owner Nathan. I am not surprised to see this review as you did prepare us for it in an email you sent upon completion of your job. I do appreciate your review and understand this is your experience from your perspective. For future potential clients I do however feel it is important to note several facts left out of your review. 1) We always have clients review their estimate and diagram prior to starting the project and ask that all pages be signed prior to excavation. As you stated you feel your estimator (who quoted the project almost a year prior to the work starting) must have misunderstood your needs. This certainly can happen and is exactly why we provide a drawing to be sure we are all on the same page. Your drawing clearly depicts that we were expanding the existing driveway 6' to the right. Not 6' from the foundation. 2) We excavated the driveway a day before we came to pave. You indicated that you notified us of the fact that you actually wanted the driveway to extend 6' from the foundation (not existing driveway) what you did not specify is that you did not notify us of this concern until we were in the process of paving the driveway with several thousand dollars of hot asphalt being installed. As you know our prep crew has different equipment then our pave crew. At this point there was no way to create the additional expansion without throwing away thousands in mix, leaving, sending another prep crew, and coming back at another time. This was expressed to you, at which time you allowed us to proceed with the paving. 3) You called the office and told Nathan the owner this was your mistake and that you wanted us to fix it for you. He met you personally onsite and gave you an estimate, at only our cost, to come back out and add the additional feet you were looking for. At this time you accepted the agreement and gave us the impression you were satisfied with the resolution. We did this expansion at our cost for you because we wanted to make sure you were happy even though we had strictly followed the contract and diagram right from the beginning. We were trying to work with you to get you what you wanted. I am disappointed that you still felt the need to give us such a negative review. It is clear the only thing that would have encouraged you to give us an "A" would be for us to come back and do the additional work at no additional cost. Of course the project is going to cost more when you have additional tonnage and Syds (all estimates are based on Syds and tonnage). While we are proud of our reviews and wonderful reputation we also understand that there will be times that we simply can not make someone happy. I think we, as a company, have gone above and beyond throughout your entire project as you yourself stated in your email to us (below): "It’s just too bad that Paul wasn’t really paying that much attention to me when I told him what I wanted done. If he had got it right, everything could’ve been done so easily and I would give you an A+ rating, but as far as it stands now, I won’t be able to give Asphalt Engineering the coveted A+ rating it’s advertised as. I think that you and Erin did an exceptional job with communicating with me, and your crew is second to none, but because of what did happen, the project spanned from April 27 – June 18, and the price skyrocketed from the agreed upon $4600 to $5850. I know I agreed to what was on the diagram that was sent me, but I don’t think too many people would take a tape rule to go out and check every measurement on the diagram either, so you can blame me for this, and technically, you’d be right, but I do think that, at the very least, Paul is partially to blame too, and I also don’t think it’s right me to have to pay for his error. But in any case, I agreed to pay to have it redone and I’ll keep my word. I just wanted you to know how I feel about it, even though I am happy with how it turned out. I hope you’ll share this with Nathan as well. This very easily could’ve been an A+ job, but I will have to give you a C rating at best. No hard feelings!" ~Erin Landry Director Of Operations

They were excellent in everything. They had a big crew of people, so that they were able to get the job done quickly. They also had a lot of machines. The driveway looks fantastic. The price was reasonable. It wasn't the lowest quote I got, but it was average. The only problem is one of their big trucks were leaking oil and it's all on the street in front of my house. It has a bunch of big oil spots and makes the front of the house look bad. They should have treated me more respectfully when I had questions about how much they were digging the foundation and not try to rush the job. They didn't want anyone asking any questions or watching what they were doing.

Hi there - Thank you for your positive review. I know that you had many questions throughout the entire process and that the office and crews were more than happy to answer all of them. You expressed many times how nervous you were about the paving as you had never had it done and that is why we were more than happy to walk you through every stage of the project. We are very used to clients watching the process as they enjoy seeing the big equipment, and what comes out of the driveway. We certainly apologize if the teams focused approach to the task at hand (prepping or paving the driveway) came across as anything else. We are so happy that you love the brand new driveway. As for the oil spilled out front all of the trucks on site were new and had no oil leaking. You confirmed with us on the phone that you had just had a UPS delivery (we heard you speaking with him while on the phone with us) and that he very well may have been the one leaking the oil. We never heard from you again after that call and we did have our full time shop manager make sure to confirm that indeed none of the trucks were leaking. We hope you enjoy the new driveway and appreciate your business. ~Erin Landry

The work performed was very good quality. They are not the least expensive but the quality was good. They suggested that I have the driveway sealed within 9-12 months to protect the asphalt. I scheduled the sealcoating for Nov 2014 including a signed estimate. They called in Oct 2014 to reschedule it for June 2015. I was concerned with waiting this long but agreed to schedule it for June 11th 2015. As of June 5th, I had not heard from AE and wanted to again confirm the schedule. I also left a message for their Director of Operations, Erin Landry. On June 9th, I received a message asking to again reschedule the sealcoating for July 9th. I called to let them know this was not a good date and asked what happened to June 11th. The person I spoke to decided it was best to blame me for not giving them a 50% deposit. I had never received such a request or even the courtesy of a phone call. I told the person to forget the job as I would be getting someone else to do the work. Very disappointed in Asphalt Engineering.

The job was done over two days. The first day, they excavated and removed the old driveway, extended it by six feet, and compacted it. A few days later, they returned and put down gravel and asphalt. They did a very good job, and it was fun to watch all the trucks at work. They came on time and did everything they agreed to do. I'm very happy with the new driveway.

I contracted for Asphalt Engineering to remove my old driveway, install a drainage basin which would drain into a rock bed surrounding my shed at the foot of the driveway, grade for best drainage, add sub base as needed, and install 2" basecoat and 2" topcoat. Unfortunately, there was a miscommunication somewhere down the line. I came home from work on the day of the rough in to find 10' of my lawn torn up, and the drain pipe from the basin coming out of a large hump of dirt in the middle of my lawn. I immediately called up to stop work until the drain was done correctly. They assured me that it would be taken care of properly. The next day, they came out and redid the drain line in a very professional manner. I was more than pleased with the second attempt. The balance of the paving went on without a hitch. It looks very nice and drains very well. ( I waited until it rained hard to see how the drain worked before writing this review...my old driveway would drain into my double garage). Other than the initial drain issue, (which left me with a 10'x 2' patch of lawn that I have to reseed), I am very pleased. If it were not for that issue, I would have given A's on overall and professionalism. I would recommend Asphalt Engineering.

I signed an agreement last fall to do this because they ran out of time in their paving/sealing season to fit me in. (That ended up being a good thing, as I scraped the h*** out of my driveway this winter.) I was a little annoyed that I had to initiate contact this spring (thus my B for responsiveness), but they fit me in within a reasonable amount of time. One of my main concerns about the seal coating was how to deal with a depression in the driveway that resulted from previous work done by AE. They would not warrant their work performed two years earlier because it was not a whole-driveway paving, even though the small affected area was completely surrounded by new pavement they put in, and they were well-aware of the presence of a buried drain line (they were the ones to cover the drain in the first place). Anyway, they offered two different solutions for addressing a round depression that holds maybe a half-gallon of water, both of which cost more than I was willing to pay, especially considering that either option would have a warranty lasting no more than one year. Aside from that tangential concern, the seal coating went great. They took care not to get the sealant on my new stone pavers, and the driveway surface was neat and consistent. I don't understand why they stopped short of the end of the driveway, skipping over not only the (asphalt) sidewalk but also the (asphalt) last few feet of my driveway, which the town had installed about a year and a half ago. Thus my B for quality.

Demo crew came in and did great job, driveway was widened and lengthened. Large sinkhole were filled and compacted, fill was laid down followed by primer coat. Crew was sharp enough to notice ground under driveway had "liquefied" from over rolling and working. Made plans to come back when ground settled back and finish with topcoat. They showed up to day to finish and did a great job. They worked hard both days they came, took no breaks, I even offered cold waters, they just worked really hard.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience in detail. We work hard to meet our client's needs and we are so happy we have done so on your project. ~Erin Landry : Director of Operations
This has been a very pleasant experience from the beginning through to the final installation and review. I found AE through Angies List, knowing I needed a new driveway and concerned about my past impressions of driveway installation companies. I contacted them through Angies List and very quickly received a reply. A polite, professional young man (Brian) came out to see my property, measure and provide the estimate... which I received within a day or two. It was clear, specific, included a plot plan for the work and included appropriate costs, Angies Discount, etc. That was in November for a project planned for this Spring. Erin, Samantha, Annette and the entire office staff kept in communication with me during the winter, confirming schedule dates, coordinating payments, contracts, etc. Very pleasant and great attention to detail. The prep crew arrived at the date and time scheduled. Great bunch of guys. Friendly & professional. I planned my schedule to be able to work from home the week of the installation, so I was frequently out observing, asking questions, etc. They put up with me with a smile, answered all my questions and even volunteered information I might not have asked. I had a few minor questions about the finished prep, and my dog decided to dig a couple of small holes in the compacted prep. I called AE to let them know and they assured me that they would address both the questions and the dog issues the day of the paving. This meant they had to rake and re-compact a couple of areas, which they did with no problem. Again the paving crew arrived on-time and went right to work completing the paving on schedule. And again, the crew itself were very helpful and friendly, answering questions and providing me with advice on what I needed to do, keeping the pets off the hot surface, etc. I was given written instructions for how to care for the new driveway, when we could walk on it, drive on it, etc. When they left the property was clean, a caution tape was strung across the entrance to keep people off. So at this point, I was extremely happy with the entire process and the look of my new driveway. And here is one more thing that makes me happy to provide them with a completely high rating. The next day I was looking at my new driveway and believed that there was an area where the pitch was different than planned and expected, and I had a question about how water flowed in a couple of areas. So I decided to call AE and tell them of my questions/concerns right away. Again the office staff took my call very politely, listened to what I had to say and asked if I would like the owner to come meet with me and review my questions. They set a time just two days away. My schedule was tight that day, so I cautioned that I had a very short window to meet with him. Nathan called me when he was 3 minutes away and met me right on time. He was very open to my questions, listened carefully, gave me some answers and advice, sprayed water on the driveway to check my areas of concern, and then offered me a plan to ensure that even such a minor concern would be addressed to my complete satisfaction. This is a very professional organization. They care about the work and the customer's satisfaction. It's why they have a high Angies List rating and they deserve it. I will recommend them (and already have to a neighbor) when anyone asks.

WOW! This company is incredible. They are prompt, courteous, professional, fair and provide exactly what they promise. We tried them last year by having our driveway sealcoated, knowing at the time we would eventually need to be completely excavated. We called them a few months later for an estimate. We felt it was quite reasonable and hired them. As the job approached we received advance information about what to expect. They showed up when they said they would, answered all our questions in a very friendly manner and proceeded. Unfortunately, they encountered a problem in the shape of a huge boulder. We all discussed the options and with their help, decided what to do. Smooth, no angst! They came today to apply the asphalt. Our driveway, at the risk of sounding obsessive, is gorgeous. Throughout the entire process there was complete communication and patience because I ask too many questions. I was away when the job was done and they left an envelope with instructions on the care and feeding of our new driveway. We would completely recommend Asphalt Engineering and plan on calling them in the future for the sealcoating to maintain the "masterpiece". You had to have seen it before.
Description of Work: They completely excavated our driveway, prepared it for paving. They came back two days later and laid down the asphalt.

It was very good and we shall use them again. They did what was asked of them. They were very quick and the driveway was great. They were professional. They weren't the cheapest but they do a very good job. They are worth the money.

Humans answered the phone promptly. Very professional, gave ball park figures over the phone. Estimator was here within 24 hours. Made suggestions for many options and followed up with formal quotes by email within 48 hours. Scheduled work, showed up on time, finished the job on time for the agreed price, which by the way was 25-40% cheaper than some of the other quotes we had and they did more work than the other quotes. Best contractor I have used in years, would recommend highly to anyone.

The work was not completed. We ran into cold weather and they had said that a lot of people had purchased the deal. They seem like a good company.
