I had some questions about the fireplace itself, not just cleaning out the bird?s nest. When I called them, I got the impression that they were knowledgeable about that, the sales person. When the tech guy came out, he didn?t have that knowledge at all. For that reason, I was slightly disappointed in that respect. It took him a little more than 10 minutes. Responsiveness was good, that was one of the reasons I picked them, because that they were able to come out right away.

When I was getting the insulation work done, when they were trying to do the air sealing around the chimney, they noticed an old chimney flue. It turned out to be what looked like an old chimney flue coming out of a wood stove in the second floor. It was broken, so it was snapped off. The insulation company said, "We're not comfortable sealing this off. If for some reason it was a back trap for the chimney, you have issues. We don't want to be liable for it. You probably just need to seal it, patch it, but we don't want to do that work, it's not what we do. So, have someone else come and address that, make sure it's fine before we finish." So that is why I had to get them. So, A-Tec Chimney came out and basically confirmed what it was and why it was there and then they basically mortared over and patched up that pipe to close it off from the chimney and confirm that nothing was blocking the chimney after they did that or anything like that. So it was really basic. It was $200 for them to do that. I was satisfied with the job that they did. It literally took them 5 minutes, they basically just knocked off that section of the flue that was connected to the chimney. They just hammered it off. Then where the hole was, they literally put mortar over it and smoothed it out. That was literally all they did. I probably could have done it, but I wanted them to come to make sure that the old flue pipe wasn't connecting anywhere else and wasn't still active to make sure that it was safe to do that. One of the things that I really liked about them is that everyone else I called to get this very simple job done was saying that they would also need to inspect the chimney and send a camera down there to snake it look at it and that I would probably also need the chimney liner and all that stuff. Everyone else was a lot more expensive. The guy that came, did what he needed to do and he didn't try to upsell me. He was like, "Listen your chimney is so old that it's probably pointless to put a liner in it at this point." He didn't try to upsell me like a lot of the other folks did. To me, that is important, especially as a new homeowner with all the other expenses. I feel like that may be valuable for other people to hear because when you don't know anything about what is being repaired it's hard to tell whether they're trying to just get you spend more money or not. So I thought that that was important.

They inserted the stainless steel liner. They were thorough and neat, and even installed - at no extra cost - a chimney cap that fit (replacing 2 ill-fitting, poorly installed caps that still another inept company put on about 5 years ago). It will take weeks for the bricks to dry out, but I am confident that these guys finally diagnosed the problem correctly.
Description of Work: It seemed that our chimney was leaking badly for quite some time (relatively new house, 2005). I had another company come in the spring, They said I needed the flashing to be reattached and the bricks sealed. Spent over $700. Fall came, and the fireplace was soaking wet again. A-Tec came, immediately suspected that we had a high-efficiency furnace but not the necessary stainless steel flue liner. They showed me example after example in the basement that supported their diagnosis. (I had scheduled another company to give me an estimate, and the young man was clueless as to where the water was coming from).

A-Tec came out and took a look at the chase cover and it was still in good shape. Looked at the seal around the collar and determined that the caulking was cracked and not making good seal. Re-caulked around the collar and should take care of the leaking. Very good service will hire again and recommend them.

Even though A-Tec is an A RATED Angie's List Company and was awarded the Angie's Super Service Award in 2015, always have a second and third opinion and estimate before hiring this company or any company. A-Tec tried to scam me out of $1590 of unnecessary work. Due to the expense of my chimney job I decided to bring in a second chimney company for an evaluation and estimate. After having a second A RATED Angie's List company evaluate my chimney and problem I was told I DID NOT REQUIRE ANY OF THE WORK PROPOSED by A-Tec Chimney Sweep Co. I wonder how many completed jobs here in the Angie's Reviews were unnecessary and paid for by unaware home owners. The Chimney cap which I was told to be a special size was a standard size. The crown of the chimney did not need to be resurfaced. The flue tiles which needed replacement due to cracks were NOT cracked. The chimney did not need to be repointed. The chimney did not need waterseal. A smoke guard is needed. I was told if I could install a shower rod I could install this item. Bought on line for under $50. A-Tec wanted $225.00. Giving A-Tec Chimney the benefit of the doubt I sent Jonathan Kopec, owner of A-Tec an email asking for an explanation and giving him the opportunity to reevaluate the chimney and situation. After 2 days I received no response. I sent a second email. To this day I have not had a response from A-Tec Chimney Sweep Co. Question, is this their standard practice? I am out $89 for an inspection and wonder if the chimney was examined at all.
Description of Work: I contacted A-Tec Chimney to evaluate a problem with smoke in the house while having a fire in the fireplace. While they were here they conducted an inspection of my fireplace, and chimney. After the inspection A-Tec recommended a chimney cap (special order), resurface the crown on the chimney, replace the top ceramic tiles in the 2 flues due to cracks, repoint the north side of the chimney, apply sealant to the chimney, and install a smoke guard inside the fire place. Total expense $1590.

After the roofers informed me that our chimney seemed to be crumbling, I called a few chimney companies to come and do an inspection and give me a repair estimate. A-Tec came the next day, had a thorough look at the chimney system and provided estimates for repointing and installing a chimney cap. I appreciated that they asked how often we use the fireplaces (rarely, only as emergency heating backup) and did not try to push us to purchase unnecessary procedures (such as sweeping or installing chimney liner). The same two technicians who performed the inspection/estimate came two weeks later to do the repair job. They completed the agreed work competently, efficiently and tidily, and even helped to clean, at no additional cost, the water heater vent in the basement that connects to the lower end of the chimney flue, which a plumber had found to be clogged with debris. Although I'm not able to get a close look at the repaired chimney above the roof line, everything looks good from the ground level, and after heavy rain since then, we have not experienced any leaks around the chimney.

These guys are great! I had my chimney swept this morning and they were very knowledgeable, thorough, and polite. These guys were awesome. Very competitive pricing. They worked super fast. They had the job done in less than 6 hrs including staging, takedown and rebuild. They were clean, courteous and professional. They protected my property and yard / garden as they were working. The end result was incredible. I would highly recommend them to anyone who needs to do a rebuild. Several neighbors are already asking. Fantastic family business.

James and David showed up on time. James had shown up a week previously to give me a quote. He did not check out the top of the chimney, only climbed a latter and looked at the chimney from about 20 feet away. On that quote it was noted that he would clean off the moss and stain on part of the chimney before apply sealer. David showed up grumpy and showed no respect for my new gutters when he laid a latter right on top of them. The bricks that were replaced were not the ones that I thought were bad but were convenient for him to reach. When I spoke with Jon, the manager, he initially indicated that the cap was easily removable should I need at a later date a new chimney liner installed. After I paid I found ou that the Hip and Ridge model was not removable and I needed to break the crown to remove it. After James and David left I notice that I could see light coming through the Hip and Ridge Cap meaning that it was not water tight. I called James and he told me t it was not possible and refused to come out anc check it out. They failed to apply the Chimney Saver Water Repellant to the entire chimney and left out the lower part of the chimney. At my request James applied some caulking around the chimney.
Description of Work: For an antique brick chimney, (1) replaced 4 bricks, (2) installed 21" x 69" x 10" Hipe and Ridge Stainless Steel Cap and (3) apply Chimney Saver after scraping off moss on the exterior of Chimney.

Response from A-Tec Chimney Sweep
Hi, [Member Name Removed] Just to clarify the cap that has removable lids was the standard flat cap that was originally quoted, you decided on a high profile custom hip and ridge style cap which is not a removable cap due to it's A frame shape. And just as we spoke on the phone, the gaps you see on the top of the inner hip are typical of that style cap where the lips fold over at the ridge just like the ridge vents on your roof do.

Steve came out and gave us an estimate on all the work and inspected the chimney prior to Thanksgiving. We were very excited that the inspection went well and could use the fireplace for Thanksgiving. Steve and Kirk came to do the work after the holiday. Unfortunately it was pouring rain and the repointing did not go well. Steve rescheduled with me for about a week later. When he came out a week later, he discovered that some of the material he had used for repointing had stained the roof due to the rain. He had really scrubbed it the week before and thought it was all cleaned up. During this visit he completed the repointing and scrubbed the roof again. He felt like he got the remainder off but said to call if their was any residue present. Of course you could not tell immediately after the washing when the roof was wet. The next day I did notice there was still residue. I called Jonathan to let him know and he said Steve would be there as soon as he could. Several days later Steve came and worked on the roof. Again he said call if there were any problems! The next day I noted that the roof was back to its original color! I have to say that Steve is a great guy! Very honest and hard working! I will use him for my annual chimney cleaning!

Both technicians (James and Sean) were professional, friendly, and informative. I got good vibes from them immediately. On their first visit, the technicians inspected both chimneys and told me what work needed to be done. They explained things, including options for work that was not needed at this time but which could be done in the future. They told me neither of my chimneys needed cleaning at this time. There was no pressure to add unnecessary work to the contract. I thought their price was quite reasonable for the work to be done. An appointment was scheduled for the repairs. Both chimneys (a brick chimney which vents the oil furnace and a cement block chimney for a wood stove) were re-pointed as needed and stainless steel caps attached. Missing mortar was replaced in the vertical seam between the house and the wood stove chimney which runs up the side of the house from the basement. A few holes in the wood stove chimney were repaired. Waterproofing was applied as needed (to top of brick chimney?). Having arrived later in the afternoon, the technicians worked until sundown. A follow-up visit was needed when it was discovered that one small seam had been missed while re-pointing the bricks and a small repair in the wood stove chimney had been overlooked. However, this was understandable as it was almost dark by the time they finished working during the initial appointment. James and Sean cheerfully came and finished the overlooked spots, which gave this company good marks for customer service. The only downside was that I never heard back from the company when I left a message asking about whether or not the small hole near the top of the wood stove chimney had been repaired. Because of it?s location it?s hard to see; however, a closer look with binoculars seems to show that it?s not a hole in the mortar, but a seam that?s been filled with some sort of dark material, giving it the appearance of missing mortar. Perhaps a minor issue, but it would have been good to have this explained to me. Overall, I recommend this company for their upbeat attitude and professionalism. I also appreciated the $50 Angie's list coupon.
