The original salesman was responsive and professional. The work done was great. At the time of purchase I was given a 10 year warranty. Last year the unit began showing problems. This was within the warranty period. Mike repair tech has come on multiple occasions but was unable to determine what causes the unit to cease blowing warm air and blow cold air. I am sure Mike was frustrated as were my husband and I. This year Mike came out for an annual check of the system and made a repair that we all hoped would fix the issue. It unfortunately did not. I phoned the company and spoke with Paul Murphy. He suggested that I contact Mike no matter the hour when the unit malfunctions again so that Mike can observe the problem in real time. I attempted to do that. On both occasions that I called the number I had for Mike, I got a message that the subscriber was unavailable. The number I had for Mike is the one listed above in the company profile. Clearly it is not accurate. On the following, Monday I called Mr. Murphy and left a message. Over the course of two weeks I have left 6 messages. Mr Murphy has not returned my call. Professionalism would be returning my call and discussing the issue. I am sad that the relationship has ended in this manner. Mike, the repair tech is kind and professional. I am disappointed in Mr. Murphy's behavior.

After they left, I noticed a part on my floor. I have a loud banging sound with my heater that I had never had before. Also, on the Angie's List website they say that there is no travel charge, however, I have noticed on my bill where they are charging me $20.00 for the trip charge. I would also like to get in touch with Mr. Murphy regarding the charges and to pay my bill. This was supposed to be a free estimate and I don't feel like I should be charged a trip charge. I have used this company in the past and have been very satisfied with their work. I am hoping that someone will contact me from this company to resolve this issue.

If it was not for them I would still have these issues but thanks to them the problems were solved with the new system they installed. Mr. Raleigh was so nice, helpful, knowledgable and he really saved from a bad situation. The installers completed the work in one day and I have had no problems since. I would highly recommend them and they are also very responsive. If I have issues again I will call them.

Installed a Unico system in Jan 2011. Due to delays in the project, we were unable to actually turn the system on until July. The a/c would work for a day or two, then it would not work. This happened on and off for a month or so. Phone calls were rarely answered and often not returned on a timely basis. Although, when I did finally reach someone, they usually had a technician out within a day or two. They came out 4 times for this recurring problem. The final visit, the technician told me there was a refrigerant leak in the walls somewhere and that the pipes must have been punctured by the drywall/plaster guys. He said our only options were to tear down the new walls to find the leak or reinstall the system to the other side of the house. Both choices were at our expense. We knew that this did not make sense and argued that we should not have to pay for a fix. We fired our contractor for a multitude of reasons, including this (and since ReCom was his sub, they were fired as well). We then learned that the outside unit was placed in violation of our town's building code and would need to be moved to the other side of the house. Hmm, was this their way of having us pay for their mistake? We had another company move the unit (Central Air Solutions, which was WONDERFUL). Central AIr Solutions also discovered that the leak (that ReCom wanted to charge us $1000 to rectify) was a loose cap on a valve on the inside Unico system. How did ReCom not find this in 4 visits AND determine that the leak must be inside a new wall? See above - trying to get us to pay for their mistake. I would never use them again and would never recommend anyone else use them.

More mistakes I wish I never used them, please review the photos that came with this report. Photo #1.This is how they improperly installed the top support and liner for the gas hot water heaters. This is a photo of the top support and the "plastic" zip tie they used (which melted and broke from the heat) to try and keep the cap and liner together. So now the flue liner can just fall down into the chimney which is very dangerous.Photo #2.this is a picture of the top plate and support installed upside-down! Top plate was also loose - No adhesive used to hold plate down. No cement used in basement to close up hole and thimble area that connects to the water heater. So it's a very high risk for carbon monoxide to gather in the basement.I already put in one report on this company on March,01, 2009 when they did my heating and AC System the title was " Avoid this company". Please make sure you read that report in detail which contains the company's statement and my response to their statement. This report is for the chimney flue they installed for me. I just had an Angie's list contractor put on chimney caps for me, this contractor has multiple "A" reports. They told me that the chimney flue was installed incorrectly and that they're made out of a thin cheap metal. The metal rots out after (5) years, to completely fix the problem it's going to cost me $1,500.00. They should have put in a stainless steel liner. Instead the put in a cheap $100.00 kit that is the equivalent of a dryer vent and charged me $1,100.00 dollars for it. Again this company is no good, avoid them, the mistakes they make may not show up at first but as time goes on you'll will find them and how much they will cost you to have it redone correctly. Also if they did work for you have a real Professional come out and inspect their work. It's a real bummer that this happened to me, all that money wasted. I hope this report stops people from making the same mistake I did.

The install was adequate although I was not informed that the original design of the venting system (out the front of the house) would be a significant eye sore during colder months. My Plumber had to rework the vent system so it would not be so obtrusive to the neighborhood. However, my most dissapointing experience came when the system failed 16 months later and the company would not back their work. The bill to repair the system was $500 and I have no guarantees this will not happen again. I will definetly be switching to another company that is more dependable and reliable.

Paul Raleigh spent a lot of time on this project to make sure it came out right. First, he took very careful measurements of the interior space of the house to determine our heating requirements. Next, he explained the many choices of gas furnaces to my wife and me. We chose a furnace and got started on the next steps. At this point, the project encountered difficulties. There were problems getting permits to connect our gas line from the street to the house. Communication between the city and the gas company was not always fast or efficient. But through it all, Paul kept a positive attitute and a can-do spirit that kept the project moving forward. Finally, when the permits had been issued and the gas was connected, Paul put together and supervised a crew of gas fitters, electricians and furnace men who completed the furnace installation in one day. The last hurdle came when Paul and I were waiting for the gas company to come and hang a gas meter in the basement. We stared in disbelief as the gas company technician arrived with gas meter in hand, then turned around immediately and left to go investigate a gas leak somewhere else. Paul worked the phones at the gas company to get a replacement technician. He spoke with several people and finally was able to get someone to come out later that same day. Paul waited until the technician arrived and installed the meter. Paul then bled the gas lines and tested the furnace. Everything worked perfectly. My wife and I are very glad that Paul Raleigh and Recom Heating handled our furnace project.

On the positive side, they were punctual during the work and cleaned up everything themselves. It was, however, an average experience working with them because they did not ultimately do what they said they could do. Two rooms in my house have been cold - this situation was explained to RECOM several times, and a solution to it was requested. Before we "signed on dotted line" the rep told us that we would be happy with everything. After signing, the rep was not confident that our cold rooms would be any warmer. After the project was completed, the owner and a tech analyzed the cold room's delivery system and came up with a solution - the only problem was that it would have cost us an additional $3600. They also did not pull a permit for the gas line connection. I called them three times about the permit, but they have yet to respond. I thought the work was over priced and under delivered.
Description of Work: They installed a new furnace with air conditioning coil. They also did some duct work, added supply grates and thermostats for a new 2-zone system.

Response from RECOM HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING INC
Recom Heating & AC, INC. will be more than happy to reimburse the homeowner the cost of a gas permit in her town. Due to the fact that Recom is never responsible for any existing components to remain, the homeowner was given a legitimate 43600 proposal. Upon receiving the proposal, I was told they would probably do the work a week or so after the original contract was honored. Any and all follow-up calls fell on deaf ears.

Avoid this company. If you’ve had them install a system for you call another company to double check their work. I have never written a negative review before but I don’t’ want this to happen to someone else. They put in an AC/Heating system. Don’t be fooled by the friendly sales person (Paul) he’s very good at convincing people that they’ll do a good job, do not fall for his sales pitch. I’ve had problems with the system they’ve installed, I’ve had them back repeatedly to fix things. Unless you know a lot about heating and heating/AC and watch them install every part of the system, don’t use them. Their mistakes have cost me hundreds of dollars in lost hot air and cold air. When I’ve had to have them back to fix things it was exhausting dealing with Paul, when I talk to him on the phone he over talks me and I can’t get a word in. I don’t have the energy to deal with them anymore. Please find someone else on the list to work with. 1/12/2009-1. Company statement: Please allow me to start by stating ReCom Heating & AC, Inc. signed a contract to install a new heating & ac system, complete with bathroom & kitchen exhaust for this member. The contract, for their 1st floor apartment & 1st & 2nd floor home was signed on 9/6/06 & the work was to start ASAP. 1. Customer Response: Yes, I agree they started on time. 2. Company statement: Unfortunately, due to the member acting as his own general contractor, ReCom Heating & AC, Inc.’s last visit to complete the installation was1/23/09. The project took over 2 years & 3 months 2. Customer Response: Yes, like many DIY people on Anigie’s list I had to be my own general contractor to save money and this is the 4th house I have renovated. . This is a 2-family house that I live in and they had to put in 2 systems. The entire house was gutted and rebuilt. Paul told me at the beginning don’t worry how long it will take he’ll do it when I’m ready. I have this in the contract. 3. Company statement: We were at the members beckon call or at least we tried very hard. We must have made over 15 trips with 10 being totally unnecessary due to poor coordination, planning & judgment. 3. Customer Response: They constantly canceled appointments at the last minute you can see other members complaining about this in the other reports. As far as poor coordination and planning this is simply not true. If they did the job right the first time they would not have had to keep coming back. 4. Company statement: In addition to fulfilling our contract & tolerating the member general contracting his own job to save money, the member asked ReCom (as an extra) to go on his roof to drop a flue liner down his chimney for the plumber (because he wouldn’t go on the roof). 4.Customer Response: I didn’t know Paul resented me so much for being my own general contractor. I had no problem with my other contractors, again like many people on Angie’s list I did this to save money. If you are acting as general contractor for your job you should not use Recom because obviously they have a problem with people doing this. As far as installing the flute liner that was their job not the plumbers and I have a contract to prove this. Also it was installed wrong I now have a dented three foot pipe sticking out of my chimney, I can also provide a photo of this. 5. Company statement: The member seems to have forgotten that I personally went on his snow covered roof in the pouring rain to complete the task because his plumber couldn’t handle the job. 5. Customer Response: This is an odd statement, I’m not sure why I’m responsible for the weather. He could have done it another day when it was safer. Again this was not the plumber’s job to do this 6. Company statement: This member also seems to have forgotten about ReCom Heating & AC, Inc.’s patience, tolerance & consistently being there for him. I personally sold & oversaw the installation & easily made 10 visits of my own - always being told how much myself & the company were appreciated. 6. Customer Response: I’m sorry Paul had to “tolerate” me. As I’m sure other members have had this problem with bad contractors, they talk down to you and when you ask questions and sometimes they give you attitude to boot. It’s as if they think they’re the customer and I’m the contractor all I want is common respect. 7. Company statement: In fact, the members would always mention the cookout they were going to have for all of us that worked on the project. Instead of an invitation to a cookout, this member opted to ruin the name of a reputable subcontractor who stuck with him to the very end. 7. Customer Response: I would have liked to of had a cook out except I had no money left because of the extra fees I had to pay to Paul so he would finish the job. He charged me extra for running a vent to the bathroom. When I asked his workers about this they told me it was a miss on their part and I should not have paid for that. Again, bad contractors charging you more when they have you over a barrel. 8. Company statement: In my 32 years in HVAC, I never take a contract or installation lightly. Hence, I will not accept one customer’s personal attacks & unjustified dissatisfaction. I will let ReCom Heating & AC, Inc.’s other Angie’ List customers comments & grades speak for our abilities & reputation. Sincerely, Paul M. Raleigh V.P. Residential Sales & Design 8. Customer Response: Paul’s response of not accepting responsibility for anything is again typical of a bad contractor. 9. Company statement: I will let ReCom Heating & AC, Inc.’s other Angie’ List customers comments & grades speak for our abilities & reputation. Sincerely, Paul M. Raleigh V.P. Residential Sales & Design. 9. Customer Response: Yes please pay close attention to the D and F reports where Paul promises you one thing then when you sign the contract he tells you he won’t be able to do the entire job as promised. So I suggest instead of putting time into this company and Paul’s obvious frustration with customers there are plenty of other contractors on the list that you should pick instead of this one. Save yourself the hassle it’s not worth it.

Recom, represented by Paul Raleigh, installed a new furnace and AC in our home one year ago (Dec. 2007). We were so happy with the way that job went that when the opportunity arose to convert our home to natural gas, we didn't even think about calling anyone else. Since we eventually want to finish our basement, we were eager to move the new furnace to a corner of our basement and to conceal as much of the ductwork as possible. Paul Raleigh devised a fantastic plan to accomplish this and made it a reality. We couldn't be more happy with the outcome. Paul Raleigh runs an amazing operation. His customer service and professionalism is clearly his pride. Even before we decided to do the gas conversion, Paul was willing to make multiple visits to our home in the evening and on weekends to consider ways that I wanted to alter the design of our heating system. When we finally decided to do the conversion, Paul designed an efficient layout for our system and figured out how to hide all of our new ducts in between floor joists. He then organized an efficient team of sub contractors and also coordinated with National Grid, the town building inspector, and the fire inspector to make sure everything was done on time and properly. In both of our furnace installs with Recom, we were without heat for less than 24 hours, a remarkable feat for everything that they have to get done. Lastly, Paul is personable, friendly, and clearly someone you can trust, without hesitation. You always get the feeling that he wants your job to come out even better than you want it too, and it does. My hat is off to the man, he does a remarkable job.

It never started. Very disappointing result.
Description of Work: I'm not a negative person (my other 2 reviews are glowingly positive) and I thought long and hard as to whether I was going to post a negative review. But if I don't, then what's the point of this service? Paul came out to our house to give an estimate for conversion from oil to natural gas. He is a terribly friendly and personable individual. He spent almost 2 hours at our house, going over our options and walking through the house. Because he mistakenly thought we had forced air, he wanted his plumbing specialist to come out and take a look at the boiler before they gave us an estimate. A few days later, the plumber came out and spent about an hour with us. He left, promising that somebody would get back to us with an estimate. That was 4 months ago and we've heard nothing. I've called and emailed Paul and his plumber numerous times and have heard absolutely nothing back. I wouldn't care as much, but they wasted 3 hours of our time. My wife and I work a lot and 3 hours is a lot of time we could have spent doing something more worthwhile. From the reviews, I'm sure Paul and his people do a good job, I guess the trick is just hiring him.

They were responsive and friendly by phone, initially. We had a narrow window of a few days when someone could be there to let them in, and they said that would be fine. They said they would charge $75 an hour and each unit would take about one hour each. Then on the day they were slated to arrive, they called and said they couldn't come because it was raining. Please note, they were coming to service indoor equipment and weren't planning to do anything with the A/C. Even the guy's message sounded pretty sheepish when he explained they wouldn't come in the rain. Fine enough, they said they would come at 8 AM the next day. We rearranged schedules to accommodate and got to the house in time to open it. When no one showed up after 30 minutes, I called. I called a total of three times over the next few hours before I got a call back. They were too busy that day and had to cancel. They said they waited to call me back until they knew for sure they couldn't make it. They asked to reschedule on a day when no one could be there to let them in. We decided not to try them again as they seemed unreliable.

Paul Raleigh was our contact throughout the experience. Paul always returned phone calls promptly and was always polite. The estimate we received was approximately $1000 less than a competitor's price, and the competitor claimed that we would need to upgrade our electrical service from 100 amp to 200 amp. Paul's electrician carefully calculated the peak current demand and assured me that that wasn't necessary, which was nice, because it could have cost an additional $2000+. We've had no problems thus far. The estimate price was indeed what we paid in the end. The start of work was delayed about one week, but there were extenuating circumstances and Paul made me aware of them immediately, so it was fine. Work took 3-5 workmen three days of work. They started promptly at 7:00 am each day and cleaned up every day at the end of work. The outside and inside units were installed solidly, the ductwork seems high-quality, and the in-room registers seem acceptable in quality. The American Standard system has been performing very well. Paul sized the units correctly for our space. Paul also paid us a final visit to fill out rebate information and he showed us how to adjust the dampers on each duct so that we can adjust them later. All and all, excellent work was performed at a reasonable price.
Description of Work: ReCom installed a central air conditioning system in my home, which did not previously have any central a/c system. Work included the installation of an external condenser unit with lines run to a heat exchanger in our attic, ducts from the exchanger to both first and second floor rooms, holes cut for the in-room registers that they installed in each room, a second-floor air return vent, and a thermostat.

The overall experience has been pretty good. They carry an Angie's List brochure and looked at their reports and that actually made me sign up for Angie's List. They came out and did an estimate and of the 2 people that came out, he actually measured my house and made recommendations as to the best placement of the air conditioning unit. They knicked my wallpaper and they had somebody come out to fix it with no charge to me at all. He returned phone calls and is easy to get a hold of and keeps up to his word on the work that will be done.

Well they did an excellent job. I thought that they were a little higher price than other quotes that I got for the work, but I went with them because I wanted that type of equipment.

They did a wonderful job and I would recommend them. They had to work with a roofer and carpenter and they all worked well together.

They were really nice and wonderful. Paul Raleigh was great! They were quick and they showed up on time. They did all the work for less money than any other quote I got. They always did everything when they said they would.

The job went very well. Paul Raleigh is to air conditioning as Admiral Rickover is to atomic submarines. He explained all technical details and decisions concerning the job. He planned it for four days and they would have completed it in three except that the electrician had to delay a day to a death in his extended family. Even though he was paid in full, his crew promptly returned to adjust a troublesome vent that was too noisy. The system works perfectly and quietly now and was just tested by the surprise June heat wave.

We had them come out to decide how to install everything. They were extremely prompt with getting the work done. They do good followup.

Paul Raleigh, design/installation, was very helpful explaining options and answering questions. The men who removed the old furnace and installed the new furnace were prompt and polite, but appeared in a hurry to be done with the job and on their way. They failed to clean up one area of the basement. They also improperly installed the humidifier, possibly due to less-than-clear American Standard installation instructions. However, if they had not been in such a rush to finish they may have realized their mistake before leaving. They never checked to make sure it was working. It took me weeks to realize that the humidifier wasn't working. When I did, I contacted Paul and he arranged for the electrician to fix the problem. I was amazed that the installation crew took several bottles of soda from a basement refrigerator without permission. While the installation of the furnace seems to have been done properly, the crew behaved in a very unprofessional manner.
Description of Work: Removed old gas forced hot air furnace and installed new American Standard high efficiency furnace with humidifier.

Response from RECOM HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING INC
THEIR WAS SOME TENSION WITH THIS HOMEOWNER RIGHT OFF THE BAT, WE REALLY TRIED TO PLEASE THE CUSTOMER AS OUR REPORTS INDICATE, EVEN ONES WITH AN ATTITUDE. THE HUMIDIFIER COVER CAME OFF WHEN HOT, DIDN'T HAPPEN UNTIL WE WERE GONE. IT WAS A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT, WHICH WE CORRECTED. AS FAR AS THE MESSY AREA, WE ONLY CLEAN WHERE WE WORK NOT THE WHOLE BASEMENT. THE HOMEOWNER CALLED ME IN THE OFFICE AND SAID ONE OF THE MECHANICS DRANK SODA. (TWO BOTTLES OF ROOT BEER WITHOUT PERMISSION AND SHE THOUGHT THEY TOOK SOME OF HER BEER.) TWENTY YEARS #1 RULE TAKE A DRINK AND TAKE A HIKE, NO ONE DRINKS WHILE THEIR ON RECOM TIME PERIOD. MY ELECTRICIAN WHO IS HONEST AS THE DAY IS LONG DRANK THE ROOT BEER, HE REMOVED FROM BASEMENT FRIDGE INNOCENTLY THINKING IT WOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM, THERE WAS NO ONE TO ASK AT THAT TIME IN THE HOUSE, SUBSEQUENTLY WHEN I TOLD HIM OF THE ISSUE HE RETURNED A SIX PACK OF ROOT BEER TO THE HOMEOWNER WITH AN APOLOGY. WE GO OUT OF OUR WAY TO PLEASE THE CUSTOMER AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO ON ALL OCCASIONS. WE WOULD BE HAPPY TO GO THROUGH ANY SYSTEM OPERATIONS AT THE CUSTOMERS CONVENIENCE. THANKS FOR THE CRITIQUE IT WILL MAKE US MORE SENSITIVE TO ALL CUSTOMERS NOT JUST THE 99% WHO THINK WE DO A GREAT JOB. SINCERELY, PAUL C. MURPHY, PRESIDENT

Of the 3 or 4 contractors I spoke with, Recom was by far the most responsive...Paul Raleigh really worked to get my business. He was also the most thorough in terms of sizing the system (he came up with the same thing that others had, but the fact that he really measured and did the calculations gave me more confidence) and worked with me to get the price closer to the NStar estimate and to do things like relocating the thermostat to a more central location right above the return duct, where it made the most sense. Others clearly didn't want to bother with finding a way to run new wires, even though it was a pretty reasonable request. He's returned all my calls and e-mails, both before and after the job. Everything went smoothly and the new furnace works great.
Description of Work: Installation of a new high-efficiency furnace and humidifier attachment, removal of old furnace and vent pipes from chimney, installation of new vents out side of building, relocation of thermostat wires and installation of a new programmable thermostat.
