+ -1 moreUmberto was totally on top of things and extremely meticulous about his work. They were considerate and quiet and stayed to late to finish the work. Umberto was amazing at being able to match paint colors. The painting is just beautifully done. They prepared the surfaces very thoroughly and were careful in applying the paint. The one problem, which they did try to address, was that they did not always cover the garden below and some paint chips got into it. I am very concerned about the environment and stressed ahead of time that all surfaces needed to be covered. I grow food in my garden and do not want any chemicals in it. I realize that it's difficult to avoid paint chips drifting down on a windy day. They did try. When I complained, they worked hard to vacuum up the remaining chips. On the whole, I am very, very happy with the work and would recommend these painters to anyone. If you can, try to get Umberto's team to do the work. You will not be disappointed.
Description of Work: Tom Curren's team of Umberto DaSilva, Jose, and Milon (sp?) did a superb job of painting my kitchen, bathroom, parts of a hallway, and the exterior of my house. The exterior included security doors, porch, and house numbers. In addition, they patched a damaged part of a ceiling and repainted it, and they varnished a bookcase.

+ 1 moreThe company was quick to send Bryan out to look at each room and discuss our options and provide a price quote. They are not the least expensive company out there but we had used them in the past for exterior painting and they did a very nice job, so we were comfortable hiring them for this large project. Our house is an antique and Bryan did a great job finding trim paint that matched some of the undamaged rooms in our house. Originally we were going to have a more relaxed time line to get all the repairs and painting done but after receiving a call from my in-laws who invited themselves up from out of state for a visit at the end of the month, we suddenly had 3 weeks to start and complete the job! I honestly didn't believe all the work would be done in that time frame but Humberto and his crew did an AMAZING job. Not only did we have a compressed time frame to complete the job, but the crew also had the challenge of me working from home every day (on a floor of the house that wasn't damaged.) They arrived early each day, were super polite- they worked quietly, cleanly and never compromised the quality of the work because of the tight deadline. They finished the job with enough time for us hang our paintings back up, plump up the couch pillows and make everything perfect for my in-laws...who RAVED about how beautiful our house looked.
Description of Work: After experiencing serious water damage in 6 rooms of our house this winter from ice dams on the roof we hired Tom Curren Company to do all the interior wall repairs, wall paper stripping and painting of walls, ceilings and window trim in each room.

+ 1 moreWe were very satisfied with the work done by the team sent by Tom Curren to repair a portico above the front entryway to our house. The wood had rotted and needed replacement. Someone came soon after we called to provide an estimate and suggested that we go with a composite material which would weather better. The repair was scheduled to take place within a couple of weeks. We had a bit of a delay due to bad weather which is understandable for exterior work. The work was completed in a 24 hour period with no mess left behind. The workers were courteous and professional --for example, they always removed their boots when coming inside to inspect the work from a second floor window. They were able to match up the paint perfectly and the result looks great. My only negative comment is that the work was expensive for the amount of time it took to do. However, this is a company that keeps it appointments, sends professionals, does a great job, and follow up to see if the customer is satisfied. I never feel like I am taking a risk when using their services (I have used them 3 times). You do pay a premium for this level of service and confidence, but I would do it again for the next home repair or paint job that I have.
Description of Work: Wooden banisters of the portico over front entryway had rotted through and needed replacement as well as re-painting to match exterior house paint color.

+ 6 moreI cannot say enough good things about the Tom Curren Company - their work and their people are outstanding. Our bathroom needed a complete remodel and, based on quality of previous painting and handyman services provided by this company, we chose them to renovate our 70 year old primary bathroom. Project Manager Sue helped us with needed purchases and ensured that the project moved along as quickly as possible. She kept us informed and was always available to answer questions or address concerns. She regularly provided a detailed spreadsheet showing all costs, payments and other details. Sue is no longer with the company, but I'm sure that whoever is performing the function now would do an equally good job. Dave, who did the majority of the work, did top quality work and also had excellent suggestions to address some unusual challenges that our bathroom presented. The other craftsmen, including the electrician, plumber and painter were also excellent. Project was completed a little later than originally anticipated, but that was because we chose to have additional plumbing work done. They make an effort to inconvenience the customer as little as possible. For example, the demolition, which was major, was done while we were on vacation. All workers were very neat and tidy. The company's continued follow-up is also commendable. For example, about a year after the project was completed the toilet paper holder loosened up. We called and the company sent over a handyman who fixed that and also tightened up towel bars at no charge.
Description of Work: Demolition of bathroom. Assistance with customer purchase of fixtures, lighting and tile. Obtained required permits. New wiring and plumbing. Installation of walls, tile, new window, lighting, and all fixtures. Painting.

+ -1 moreI was looking for a company to clean our gutters and was hoping to find a service I was happy with that I could use bi-annually. Unfortunately, due to their poor professionalism, Tom Curren was not this company. I was using an Angie's list coupon (which dropped the price to 95$) so the person whom I spoke with said that I had to be home when the gutter cleaner came. I arranged to get to work late and noone showed up. When I called they at first had no record of who was supposed to come and then said they would call back with an update....30 minutes later, no call had come. When I called back they said "oh, didn't the handy man call you, he is sick and will have to reschedule...we will call tomorrow." No call came the next day. When I called back to arrange, again they had lost track of the order. When the guy did finally come (this time they said I didn't need to be there), he left a note that side "the shingles on the side of the house are rotted". No note of which side of the house or any more info given. When we had another contractor come to fix the shingles it turned out to be a small row of shingles on the left side of the house...this kind of info would've been useful. Overall, they got the job done but given the lateness, the lack of follow--through and the poor communication, we won't be using them again.

+ -1 moreNot a huge deal. They left a flier at our door. We called to get service and they came and did the work without ever calling us back. Left the bill at the door and we paid them. I don't remember much more.
Description of Work: They were fine. Nothing special. Left a lot of the debris on the driveway. We moved to Dallas so obviously, are not going to use them again.

+ -1 moreWe decided to choose Tom Curren after getting five estimates. It was one of the more expensive ones but based on reviews and being a local company and previous experience with a cheap painter, we decided to go with them. They did not disappoint. The house was fully scraped and in many areas sanded. Since there was lead paint found beneath, they needed to follow all the EPA guidelines and cover the lawn and use a special sander. They also fixed some planks that had rotted. After first walk-though, I found some minor issues with old cracked paint that wasn't fully stripped (on the garage, not the main house). They were fixed the same day. They didn't receive final payment until I had inspected and approved the job. I would work with them again, they were timely, responsive and professional.

+ -1 moreI think I was very clear about our needs, but I think the company did not take them seriously. I don't think it is necessary to have multiple conversations with workers, and project managers. The customer should deal with the project manager, and he should deal with the workers. The project manager should visit the site in advance of the project, rather than sending the workers.
Description of Work: Tom Curren came to my house on August 25, 2011 to give me an estimate on replacement of gutters after we had our house painted (by United Home Experts). He seemed professional and knowledgeable and after reading recommendations on Angies list, I signed a contract to have them install our gutters for $3,800. On that date I told him I wanted either a gutter that matched the trim or that we would paint the gutters the same shade as the trim. He told me they would send me a sample in the mail of the colors that the gutters came in, which they did. On that date, I also showed Mr. Curren a sample of the particular screening I wanted on the gutters and he said he knew it wand would have it ordered. Brian Pellegrino, the project manager called me and told me the installation date would be the week of the 19th. I received no less than 4 messages from office staff saying they were having trouble running my credit card. I gave them the information once via e-mail and later 3 times by phone the final time, I was not happy to be calling for the third time. The week before the 19th Brian called back and told me the install date would be moved till the next week because of the storm. I told him I was anxious to get the Gutters because of water problems around my house. On the 26th, two installers came by to "look the house over again" and take more measurements. I was expecting them to bring a sample of the gutter to see if it matched the trim well enough or if we would have to paint it, but they neglected to bring this and said they would return the next morning with the sample. They did not come the next morning. I called Brian again and asked where they were, and I was becoming aware of a lack of accountability in the company. He informed me the workers would come the next day with the sample which they did. We decided the color was close enough to the trim to use it. The workers informed me that they would install the gutters Friday (9/30) and Saturday (10/1) would finish up the job. I asked them about the screening and they said they didn't know anything about it (again lack of communication and accountability). I showed the workers the gutter screens I had shown Tom Curren on day I signed the contract. I was getting impatient because it was quoted in the contract as "Install gutter leaf guard $288 Material costs TBD". I called Brian and voiced my dissatisfaction and growing impatience about this. He returned my call to my cell phone, which I did not have that day because it was being repaired, but he left 2 messages to ask me where they might get the screening. When I got my phone that evening I saw the messages and was just amazed that I'm paying the company $3,800 for the gutters and screening quoted in the contract and the project manager calls me the day before they are to install the gutters wondering where he can get the screening? And why did he not call my home phone if he couldn't reach me on the cell? Today I called him at 8:30 AM to ask what time the workers would arrive to install the gutters and when they would order the screening and he informed me they would not be coming today. He said "well you threatened to cancel the contract because we didn't have the screening. At that point, I just decided I had had enough of this nonsense and no longer want to deal with this company and I did cancel the order. I DO NOT RECOMMEND TOM CURREN COMPANIES.

+ 0 moreOverall, the timeliness & quality of the work was excellent, as was the timely follow-up (on a weekend, nonetheless). Our entire experience, from start-to-finish, set a new standard for how we expect to work with painters, carpenters, etc. Although the price was slightly higher than the competition, IT WAS WORTH PAYING due to the ease-of-interacting with the estimator, the office and the onsite foreman - as well as the quality and clarity of their estimate. We plan on using this company for many more projects - large and small - around the house over the coming months.
Description of Work: Painted & patched four walls and three ceilings in our interior, and prepped and stained part of an exterior (cedar clapboard) wall and prepped, repaired and stained an outdoor mahogany deck and wood railings.

+ 0 moreTom Curren's gutter crew did a great job. For the gutter cleaning they identified loose fittings and tightened them without extra charge or any fuss. This is more than I expected. For the new section of gutter, they previewed the work the day before and the foreman made some suggestions I had not thought about. They told me what would be involved, when and where they needed access to the property and what time the job would start and should be completed. The job went exactly as planned without a hitch and they checked in with me at the end to make sure it was complete to my satisfaction. Of particular importance to me was the risk of damage to some new plants and shrubs around the area of the new gutter work. Even though the ladders had to be in amongst the new shrubs, there was no damage. They were extremely careful and professional.
Description of Work: 1. Clean existing gutters 2. Install gutters on extension with a flat roof which had been built without gutters (and run off was causing erosion and problems) 3. Add an extra down spout to a long section of roof needing an extra downspout.

+ 0 moreI wasn’t pleased with the carpenters, but I was very pleased with the painters. They were very expensive. The painters did a very fine job. They were expensive, but they did a really nice job. The carpenter took a long time and charged a lot. I didn’t get a specific estimate. He didn’t do well and he kept going back and forth with little pieces of board and so on. It ended up costing a lot more than I thought it should and I wasn’t really pleased with the job. There were 3 men here to do the painting job. They were excellent painters. They were very careful. The sanding and stuff was wonderful. The person that came out and looked at the work and stuff was very professional. I wouldn’t use them again in the future.
Description of Work: I used the services of Tom Curren Companies probably over a year ago. They did some carpentry work and painted the interior of the house. The carpenter worked on replacing some molding under a gutter.
