It all went very well. The work was performed excellently, the contact between the office, the workmen and me (concerning scheduling, pricing, assignment of workers) was great, and the men sent were competent and courteous. I would definitely use this company again.
Description of Work: Sheet-rocked, plastered, and painted a large area of the living-room wall which had fallen in when an attached mirror cracked; also plastered and painted a small plaster break in the stairwell. Cleanup was done at once with no grit or dust remaining.

The job was completed and I am happy with the results. It was supposed to be a 5 day job though it was finished in fewer days, and on one day, only one person showed up. The painters were polite, kind, and hardworking. They kept their work environment clean and have left my house looking much nicer than it was before. The job seemed smaller than was outlined, which may be a testament to the painters' efficiency and/or an over-exaggeration on the estimate.

I purchased a number of closet/wall units and bookshelves from IKEA. Feeling extremely overwhelmed thinking about putting them all together, I called Tom Curran Co. over the weekend. Early Monday morning they returned my call. I mentioned that I had vacation week after Christmas and they said I would be able to send a handyman on Dec. 27, 2012. Joe C. came promptly on 12/27 and once I showed him all of the IKEA materials, he went quickly to work on the wall unit for the office. However, the amount of work to put these items together was more than both of us anticipated!! Since I am a bit handy, I assisted him by putting some of the pieces of the bookshelves together while Joe worked on the office wall unit and part 1 of the closet. The next day (12/28/12), Joe brought a work partner, Dave to help assist with the numerous projects. Since they were only able to work 3 hrs., Dave agreed to return on 12/31/12 to complete the work. When all was ?said and done?- I had 1 wall unit and 2 bookshelves installed in the office, 3-double door bookcases and cabinet for fuse box in family room, a wall-to-wall (3 section) closet and 2 mirrors securely installed. Everything looks and works great!! I really appreciate the work they both did considering it was right near 2 major holidays (Christmas and New Years).
Description of Work: Assembled and installed IKEA wall shelf unit and a wall closet with 3 sections. They also installed (secured) to wall- a large mirror in the living room, 5 bookcases, a cabinet over the electrical panel box and a small mirror in the bathroom.

I have used Tom Curran in the past and been very happy with the work provided. I have used the company for interior painting and attic insulation and handyman work. i did not use them for most recent interior painting work as there price was much higher than the vendor I used. However I am sure there work would have been excellent as it has been in the past.

This was my first experince with a gut renovation. Ouch! Was it ever painful! The good: Tom is very honest and straightforward. He knows his business, what is entailed in achieving the desired results, and he communicates clearly. He came to the house, saw our spaces (we were looking to update 2.5 bathrooms), understood our "vision", and gave us his estimates. The first project started on the anticipated Monday date, despite a weekend blizzard we thought might cause delays. All of Tom's subcontractors were unfailingly pleasant and polite. His designer, Sage, is great, and helped to coordinate tile, paint, and fixtures. The bad: Communication was lousy, between the company and us, and even more so internally. As an example, the estimate we received included an $1800 allowance for a glass shower enclosure; the project manager tried to charge us an additional $1800. When I explained to him that I thought it was included, rather than looking into it on his end, we were forced to appeal to his boss, Tom, to get that resolved. Episodes like that happened repeatedly, and definitely soured the relationship. Despite asking, we were offered very little advice on things we simply couldn't know as first-timers, such as outlet location, the pros and cons of relocating a drain, or product choice. In fact, I incorrectly chose two different vanity options before being informed of the correct size required by my space. Having never done a renovation, and knowing nothing whatsoever about plumbing fixtures, it would have been nice to have been told, "brand XYZ is a very reliable brand; we prefer to avoid ABC as we've known it to have some issues; LMNO is a great value for the price," the sorts of things one learns from experience. The ugly: After the initial meeting, Tom stepped away and left everything in the hands of his Project Manager, Nick. This should have worked in theory, however, his project manager had negligible communication skills, and no idea whatsoever of customer service. He was hard to reach, difficult to talk to, and just plain rude on several occasions. Promises were made, promises were broken; yet he always blamed someone else (often me!), and never took responsibility for his actions. He was completely insensitive to the fact that my 84-year-old mother was in the house. It seemed that he cared little about quality of work or customer retention, and that his only concern was the company's (short-sighted) bottom line. Our relationship deteriorated to the point where he and I stopped talking completely, and all communication was left in the hands of a subcontractor (who had no trouble communicating with me). To be fair, the new bathroom is very nice. Unfortunately, because of the problems we encountered with the project manager, we were forced to start over with another contractor to complete the other 1.5 bathroom renovations.
Description of Work: Gut renovation of a small old master bath.

We feel badly that poor communication negatively impacted our customer’s experience of the remodeling process. Clearly, the chemistry between our production manager and the customer did not work well and there were miscommunications that detracted from the customer’s experience. This is not how things typically go. We strive to go beyond customer expectations and emphasize customer service. The talented people on our team take great pride in their work and will go to great lengths to create a positive experience for our customers. On a standard remodeling project our designer will spend time with the customer making selections, going to show rooms to look at different options, and discussing brands and product choices. We do not like to leave customers feeling overwhelmed and without guidance and regret that this customer felt that way. We’re happy that she was pleased with how her new bathroom turned out in the end and hope that she will be able to enjoy it for years to come.

As a company, we emphasize high quality work and long-term customer satisfaction. When we estimate a job, we give an honest assessment of what it would take to do the job well, without cutting any corners. We always give a written estimate and are transparent about what it includes. We take into account the steps required to produce a high quality job, so our estimates are not always the lowest, however, because we take the time to do a thorough job, our work tends to look great and hold up longer than other paint jobs. Most of our paint work is covered by a three year warranty. If there are issues, we take care of them. We have been painting Boston area homes for over 25 years and our success comes from offering the best value to customers, that is, high quality, professional work and responsive customer service at a fair price.

The handyman removed a broken storm door, picked up a new one at Home Depot, and installed it. While there, he noticed that an exterior light was dangling, and repaired that, as well. The work took longer than I had anticipated, so cost me more than I thought it would, but the quality of the work was excellent. This particular handyman has worked for me before and does a fine job. I will definitely use Tom Curren again.

I asked Tom Curren Companies to provide a quote for the above job. I had contacted 4 vendors for the job - 2 would not even quote for the work as the ceiling heights were quite challenging. Bryan from the business department was prompt, professional and took the time to fully investigate the work before submitting a comprehensive quote for the job. He was very happy to re-work the quote and provide complete transparency on the break-down of the costs such that we could make a fully informed and correct decision for us. We decided to go forward with TC for the work after much analysis of the options. We were very impressed with the overall professionalism of the organization, i.e. quoting process, pre-commencement coordination calls and preparation and scheduling for the work to start, and follow-through of on-site work. The on-site team showed up exactly when they said they would, took on-board my detailed expectations and started the job. The on site workers we 100% professional, contentious, clean, courteous and of course hard working. They worked consistently and professionally and though took a bit longer to complete the task than originally forecasted, the quality was better than expected. The house was left in as good a state as could be expected having undertaken this level of work/intrusion. The house was not left "hospital clean" but clean enough that a once over by us made it that way. I was pleasantly surprised with the results and would use them again.
Description of Work: The work desired was to paint the majority of the ceilings in our home and skim-coat plaster over three walls of stucco finish and then paint these walls. The job required working on double height walls (over 20') and painting some cathedral/vaulted ceilings.

We hired Tom Curren to repair external wood stairs, door frames and porches. Overall, things are better, but it was somewhat painful getting to the end result. The good: - Very professional and good communication - Punctual, written estimates - Willingness to resolve problems - Showed up when they said they would The bad: - They didn't use the highest quality materials - On every job so far, it has ended up costing more than was originally estimated - Original estimate was much higher than others...sometimes twice as much - There were some questions about building codes. I'm not convinced everyone is up to date on current building codes. Overall, the people at Tom Curren are nice people, but in terms of price and quality, I believe there are better options. Just an update in response to Tom Curren's response. (3/8/13) Like I said, they are nice people, professional, and try to make good, but.... - As TC stated, we hired them for two additional jobs and both ended up costing more than was originally estimated. - During the very first job, I had to remind them what was included in the job. They thought they were finished but I reminded them that still had half the work to do (back railings on decks). They had to pull up the original estimate to confirm. They proceeded to fix the back railings but they changed us more, because they discovered other problems. - I asked TC for yet another estimate on removing an ac from our wall and the estimate was over 1K. A local carpenter removed it for $350. - I sent TC an email asking for a quote on painting 7 interior doors. Their painting prices are competitive and paint jobs are less risky, but I never received an email back. - The crack in the BEAM TO SUPPORT the staircase was not superficial, in my opinion. No crack is superficial. Cracks grow. Cracks that are exposed to extreme elements grow faster. Cracks in SUPPORT BEAMS should not exist.
Description of Work: My association hired Tom Curren for various carpentry and painting projects last fall.

Response from Tom Curren Companies
As the customer wrote, this was a multi-component job. We did have to adjust the original estimate because during the course of the job we discovered that the porch railing posts, which we were to reinforce, were cut too short during the original construction and needed to be extended. This went beyond the original scope of the estimate. Anytime there is a change in the scope of work we meet with the customer at the job site to go over the additional work and come to a mutual agreement. In this instance, we explained the situation to the customer and he okayed the change in the scope of work and cost estimate. Regarding quality of material, we always discuss expectations with customers and purchase exactly what we spec out in the estimate. We always aim to use high quality materials. This project was no different. During this job the customer called us with concern about the quality of one of the beams installed to support the staircase. Our production manager, carpenter, and estimator met with the customer to inspect the beam. The beam contained a superficial crack that did not compromise its structural integrity. The customer said he understood this but did not like the look of the crack and we agreed to replace the beam with no additional charge. During our initial carpentry inspection of this job our carpenter believed that the railing height might not be to code and the staircase was not braced properly. We suggested that the town building inspector be asked to verify code compliance. The inspector said that the height was okay but the bracing was not. We are always concerned that our work is done safely and that workmanship meets state building codes. When the job was completed, the customer came to our office and expressed satisfaction with the project. He has since hired us to perform two additional jobs, one at the same association building and another at his home. Whenever issues arise during a job, we work to resolve them promptly and professionally. Our company prioritizes quality of work and customer satisfaction so we very much regret that this customer was not fully happy with the experience.

I was pleased with his services. He did a good job. He also looked at the gutters, saw some of them were loose, and just fixed them without being told and at no extra charge. He was responsive. It was necessarily not the cheapest price but he seemed to know what he was doing, which is important with a handyman. He did gutter cleaning twice since then, that was like $125 each time, and the other work was a couple of hundred dollars. He had to cancel once, but he called.

We were very satisfied with the service of this group from start to finish. The whole process was smooth and the results were great. Barry walked through several house projects with us and then came back personally to explain the quote and how their service worked. They totally took out and redid the window sills on our 1925 house to tighten up the drafts and you cannot even remotely tell they have been done. They look just exactly like the original sills, but with no gigantic gap! They painted the new sills and around the window frame as necessary and were clean and efficient about the whole project. They also fixed a gutter for us and some rotting wood around our threshold. They showed up when they said they would, charged what they quoted, and were courteous the whole time. We would certainly use them for additional projects in the future.

After initial phone call, we met with a company representative whom we knew from a previous job. He was punctual, friendly, helpful, and professional. Within the expected time, the carpenter called to arrange a time to come and survey the job. He also was punctual and professional. When a date was arranged for the project to begin, the men who were to do the work arrived as planned. They were considerate of the functioning of the household and accomplished their tasks efficiently and with a minimum of disruption. I particularly liked how enthusiastic the carpenter was about the staircase and the clear pride he took in his work. We were very happy with the outcome.
