Simply - I'd recommend Howard to anyone who wants a piece of furniture refinished, repaired and/or rebuilt with artisan quality. The sewing table I brought him had not been cared for & I wasn't sure it could be saved. He assessed what needed to be done honestly, described what he could do/what he'd recommend, quoted a fair price & then did everything he said he would. Honestly, the table now looks better than I thought it possibly could -- his recommendations were great (he was able to 'see' what I couldn't) & the quality of his workmanship is phenomenal.
Description of Work: I rescued a 100-or so year old sewing table from the trash. It had once been a beautiful piece of furniture, but it was in very rough condition -- the cast iron base was very rusty & chipped, the wooden drawers were water-damaged w/non-working closures, the top was unsave-able. Howard refinished, restored and rebuilt it into an again-beautiful piece.

I called Howard, left a message, and heard back the same day. I was able to bring the table in the very next day, he explained the problems in detail, showed me some of his before/after photos. I asked him if it could be finished within two weeks, he said absolutely. I wrote him a check for half the total price, an left my table in his hands. Within a week, he called to say the table was ready. I went to see the finished product, was VERY impressed, and wrote him a check for the remaining half. I asked him if it was alright if I left it there a few days until I had someone to help me move it, which he had no problem with. I'm picking it up in a few days.
Description of Work: I brought in an antique coffee table (or a trestle table as Howard later informed me) that was in horrible condition. In fact, he told me that everything that could be wrong with the table was. There were actually pieces missing that he had to manufacture himself. The end result was absolutely amazing. It was unrecognizable- in a good way! He worked very quickly, was done within a week. He was even nice enough to let me leave the table there over the weekend until I had someone to help me move it. I was very happy with the service. I would absolutely go to him again and would recommend him to anyone. Thanks again Howard!

Howard Freeman was courteous at estimate and pickup. Constantly checked in during the various refinishing stages and had me come and approve each color/stage. Adjusted the color of stair on the oak table to coordinate better with the teak chairs. Repaired springs on seat cushions. Howard has an easy going manner and is easy to talk to. He has you come and look at the work at each stage to make sure it's what you wanted.I hadn't anticipated how much refinishing furniture can cost since I never did it before. The color matching/coordinating was more difficult than I had imagined. Take advantage of the periodic check ins that Howard offers and if matching some thing, bring samples of what you mean. If changing a color ask for other samples to compare to.

Howard was professional and informative. When I asked him for an estimate for stripping some old chairs he honestly said that it probably wasn't worth the expense "unless the chairs have sentimental value." After I agreed to the estimate, he took the furniture with him. The table and bench looked wonderful when he returned them. After the child's chair seat been replaced, Howard cleaned the whole chair and carefully darkened the caned seat so that it looked appropriately old. I thought his work was priced fairly and would certainly use this company again.
Description of Work: The top of a walnut dining room table and the top of a cherry bench were refinished. The caned seat of an antique child's rocking chair was replaced.

Got an estimate for sideboard and chairs. Sideboard was done first, now chairs are being done. The sideboard was brought back finished early, since I wanted it for the holiday weekend. Punctual and professional. Now the chairs are being finished. Will write again later.
Description of Work: Had an antique sideboard repaired (broken leg) and cleaned up. It looks GREAT. Very respectful of my wishes about the quality of the patina and the job that was done is terrific.

I have had the table for almost fifty years and have wanted to do this all that time. It is beautiful. Howard did a wonderful job of repairing and restoring the wood to a warm satiny glow. Having actual wheels that are round (not flattened by age) and mechanisms (open and close for leafs) that operate smoothly, is a pleasure.

We inherited a 40" round cherry table which had had layers and layers of polyurethane slathered on top of it over the years, and the finish was extremely uneven and rough. The wood grain was barely visible. The finish looked as if globs of goo had been baked on it. The legs were also in fairly bad shape. We looked for a refinisher in Angie's list, and chose Howard Freeman, who responded promptly and courteously. He gave us an estimate on the spot, loaded the table into his van and took it to his workshop in Natick. After 1 week, he called to ask if we would like to come to his shop to see the table, and decide if we liked the color of wood, now that it had been completely stripped of the polyurethane finish. We went to his shop, and the table color was perfect, so we said go ahead and put a finish on it. We went home, and a few days later, Howard called to say the table was ready. He delivered it to our home, set it up, and it was perfect. An antique table restored to its former glory! The finish was absolutely beautiful, durable, and the cherry wood graining is now visible. Howard also repaired a crack in the wood, making it almost invisible. An excellent refinishing job at a fair and reasonable price. Howard also repaired the seat of an antique child's ladder back chair for us at reasonable cost.

Howard came to my home on January 11th to see our kitchen table that needed refinishing. He brought with him pictures of his work, including before and after shots. He looked over my table, gave me a price to refinish the table and took it with him that day. He estimated that the table would be done in two weeks and he delivered it back to me earlier than promised. The table looks beautiful, like new. Howard is a true craftsman and it is obvious that he takes pride in his work. The entire process was very easy. Howard's response to my initial phone call was very quick and he was here to take a look at the table within 2 days of my initial phone call. We are very pleased.

Howard came to my home to see the work involved and to show me pictures of his work. He looked at the three pieces I was interested in refinishing or repairing and offered suggestions. He took with smallest piece with him. He called me in about a week to see the stripped piece and to select the stain. Work was completed in about another week. It was beautiful work. I saw several pieces in progress at his shop and was very impressed with his work. I purchased another piece from Howard and it is in progress now.

I am very happy: the tables look very nice. Howard first came to my house to examine several pieces I wanted to repair and then sent an estimate for the work. He completed the work promptly, after picking up the furniture at my home. Once completed (about two weeks for each piece) he brought them back to my home at a time that was convenient for me, He did not suggest doing any work that was unnecessary; for example, for some other furniture items with more superficial scratches he explained how I could repair the scratches myself (but was also willing to repair them for me if I chose that alternative). He is knowledgeable and professional, and i will have him do some more work for me on a stereo cabinet in about a month from now.

So, overall, he was quick to come out to my house to give me a quote, proud to show me his portfolio of work, which is impressive and which helped me to make the decision to award him the work, and clear in his communication about what would be required and what it would cost. When he discovered that there was a bit more damage than he first had noticed, he called to be sure that the additional $50 charge would be acceptable. He called when the work was done and was completely flexible and accommodating about delivering the completed piece. And the completed piece was more beautiful than I could have ever hoped it would be -- better than my wildest imagination could have conjured.
Description of Work: I could not be happier than I am with the work that Howard did for me, and that is on top of thinking he is just a super top shelf extra nice and extra professional person! My antique hope chest, purchased from an antique dealer with a prayer that it could be made to look reasonably respectable (because it was about two steps away from being suitable for firewood when I bought it), now looks BRAND NEW. It is a miraculous and fabulous piece of restoration work that Howard did, which required among other things (1) a repair of a leg that had broken off and then was put back on very badly by the previous owner, (2) a bunch of veneer had lifted and needed to be fixed, (3) all the surfaces of the wood were in pathetically bad shape and needed to be stripped, repaired, and refinished, (4) one of the claw feet had been eaten away by rot, creatures, or something else, and needed to be recreated, (5) whole chunks of the legs were missing and needed to be recreated, and generally (6) repair of the damage to the entire piece from years of evidently having been stored in a cruddy basement or garage. So, that's the description of why I think he is an artist, a craftsman and a magician, too. But, to go along with all that, Howard is a good communicator, respectful and gentlemanly, straightforward and trustworthy, and incredibly responsive and polite, which are not qualities any of us take for granted anymore. I recommend him without reservation!

It went great! I am THRILLED with the results. Howard came and took the coffee table. And then returned it 2 weeks to the day - looking AMAZING! I had lived with the table for so long with the crack and the uneven finish -- I can't get over how fantastic it looks. And now it has a matte waterproof finish that will protect this table which gets so much use. I was a little disappointed that a couple minor surface scratches (caused by sharp cat claws walking) didn't come out. But I hadn't really noticed them before, and it was just that I was studying the table when it came back. For what I paid, I'm very happy with the results. It looks so great now that it is a main focal point of the living room! Would definitely use Howard again (as soon as I can afford to do another piece)!!
Description of Work: For nearly 20 years, I've had a bare antique oak coffee table that had clearly be somewhat stripped in the past (there were traces of black paint and green beneath that, left on the turned detail part of the legs and along the side of the tabletop). There had long been a crack running the length of the table, but in recent years that board started to warp up. Someone put a wine glass on the crack and it nearly went flying (because the crack was now sticking up so much!). Over the years it had also gotten many other problems that I looked past - such as the finish completely disappearing and the leg bottom lightening significantly on one leg, and all the pieces of wood making up the table were all different shades, depending on where sunlight had hit the table, etc. So I called Howard. He completely refinished the table, making it all the similar shade, finishing it with a matte waterproof finish that looks like lustrous wood but will protect the surface during future use. He repaired the crack and amazingly managed to get rid of the warping completely! The table looks FABULOUS, and it was a worthy investment to make it look attractive AND protect it.

Overall, it went well. He and his assistant picked up the dresser and mirror and took it away. Right afterward, the friend who gave me the dresser realized she didn't give me the strip of wood trim that had fallen off the dresser. So I called Howard to see if he'd wanted it, but he'd already made a new strip to go there. When he first saw the dresser and quoted me the price, he wasn't planning to strip the dresser, but do other things to bring it back to how it should look. In the end, he found that he needed to completely strip and refinish the top, and I was thrilled that he didn't change the price even though he ended up doing significantly more work. Howard invited me to come to his studio and choose the exact shade of stain, but I wasn't able to go. So we discussed it at length, and I was very pleased with the color he used. He also (at my request) changed the finish from a shiny finish (which showed the dings and problems more) to a matte surface... which he tells me is water proof (but I haven't wanted to test that!). I think the dresser looks like new. I really can't imagine how it would've looked better if the whole thing had been stripped completely and then refinished. I think it looks like that was done, for the most part. So I am very happy with Howard's work and his price, which I found was SO much less than the other companies I got quotes from. The only down side of this project was that originally I think he said it would take 2 weeks, but because of humid weather it ended up taking almost 4 weeks. The delay was also partly due to the added work of refinishing the top. I will definitely use Howard again! He brought an old dresser back to life!
Description of Work: I had a solid mahogany mirrored dresser that was quite beat up, missing a bit of trim and the finished had whitened. It had a lot of dings and uneven color, too. Howard refurbished the dresser and wood around the mirror.

On the initial consult Howard came personally to look at the table, see the surrounding pieces (from other makers) and discussed at length what we wanted. He showed us examples of his previous work. He called with questions during the process - for example did we want a satin or shiny finish. He delivered the table personally and took plenty of time to explain just how to care for the piece (as well as other pieces in the room)
Description of Work: We had an heirloom table inherited from my grandmother which Howard refinished beautifully. He took off the dark built up polish and found a gorgeous grain underneath, he repaired the chipped border so well that we can't tell where the wood was missing. He made the edging look inlaid by the addition of a tiny black line - it looks absolutely amazing! He also polished the brass feet, replaced the mechanisms for holding the table together with new solid brass fittings (keeping the character of the table but making it much more stable) It looks absolutely fantastic.

All the pieces that I have brought to Howard have been refinished with expert craftsmanship. This is obviously due to his experience, knowledge, and skill. He explains what will be done, sets the price, calls with questions, and has even had me come back in to chose a color of stain or consult on additional work he finds necessary. When two chairs needed to be upholstered, he sent them out for the work and they are perfect! He is a highly skilled craftsman and treats furniture with respect and care.
Description of Work: This antique desk was in deplorable condition, literally falling apart. It was a family antique, that I wanted to restore and give to one of my children. It was in desperate need of refinishing. When I brought the desk into be looked at, Howard told me exactly what needed to be done, how long it would take to restore and refinish, and set the price. It was in such horrible condition he took pictures of it... So I would have a picture of the before and after work. He completely took it apart, refinished the wood, had to make two pieces to complete a missing piece on the top, polished the hardware and put a gorgeous piece of leather on the top to finish it. I was absolutely amazed at the finished piece. I am so proud to have this in my home. It is an antique that was treated with respect and carefully restored to its original beauty. I have since brought in five other pieces to be refinished.

Because he did such a good job with a fall board from my Steinway piano and the antique spinning wheel, I have asked Mr. Freeman to repair and refinish several other pieces of antique furniture. In all cases, he showed himself to be a skilled craftsman, with finesse and respect for my requests. The work was finished promptly, and I felt the prices were reasonable.
Description of Work: Mr. Freeman refinished and repaired a damaged 165-year-old spinning wheel from my family, replaced a leg on an antique metronome, repaired and replaced the seats on two family heirloom side chairs, stripped and stained a bookcase of sentimental value, and repaired and restored an antique butternut side chair made by a member of my family.

Very well. Howard showed me his portfolio of work when i was considering hiring him. He picked up and delivered the furniture. I had two bureaus, a vanity table, an oak farmers table, a bench and a chair done over 18 months.
Description of Work: Between Jan 2009 and May 2010, used PFS' services on four large pieces of family furniture, and two chairs. Had them done one at a time. All were done beautifully. A bureau had serious water damage on the top that made me think about scrapping it, even though was a wedding present to my grandmother. PFS rescued this and all the pieces. Very respectful that it was family pieces--looked for marks etc. For some pieces, the timeline for when the piece was finished didn't matter, but for the last piece, a table, Howard worked hard to meet my time constraints for having the piece done. Restoration is labor-intensive and is not cheap---BUT the value of the pieces that i had restored surpasses anything i could buy in stores with same amount of money. Plus these were family pieces that meant alot to me. Now they're the most beautiful objects i own. Howard communicated with me throughout to let me know the progress of the pieces.

I think it went very well overall from start to finish. He was very personable and took the time to talk things through. He explained his services and his approach to it. He took the time to listen and to me, it seemed as if he took great pride in the quality of his work and had good customer service.
