Description of Work: Twp experiences with the Computer Cafe, both excellent. 1st was a Toshiba laptop that would not recognize my network - fixed while I waited - no charge. Seems Toshiba finds it necessary to overlay their own operation system on top of Windows 7. Canon Pixma Printer - paper feed jam. Fixed same day for minimal charge.

After the first repair failed ($220 - $60 diagnostic/$160 for repair labor), they determined that the part had to be replaced. As the repair was under a 30 day warranty, they should have done the second repair for the cost of the part (at their cost), but I agreed to pay for one hour of labor (instead of 2, even though about 2 hours was paid for the first repair) and for the part ($40). The second repair made the laptop inoperable. I should have tried it at the Computer Cafe rather than at home, but they had noted that it was tested in the shop. On first boot, the unit gave a smoky burning smell from the jack and then after five minutes turned off, which it did at every attempt. I asked for all money back. Justin, the manager, offered all but the $60 diagnostic fee, but later agreed to a full refund (considering that they ruined the laptop). Considering that I received af full refund, I feel a bit hesitant giving a D rating, but the overall experience was bad and time consuming.
Description of Work: Repair of jack connectivity problem on a Dell laptop. The cord had a poor connection and could only charge and make a connection if held in place at odd angles. Diagnosed problem with poor jack connectivity. First repair was to resolder the "loose" jack to the motherboard. This repair did not correct the problem, and after a short period of time a connection could be made but the battery would not charge. Second repair was to replace the jack piece. This repair ruined the laptop. The battery would no longer charge, the power indicator would blink on and off, and after 5 minutes of use the laptop would turn itself off, noting upon reboot that the laptop had become too hot.

I had received a good referral from a trusted source, so was not at all anxious about bringing my laptop to Computer Cafe. However, approximately a week after dropping it off, I called for an update and was told that Windows needed to be re-installed and I would get a call when it was complete. Another week went by, so I called and was told Oops! I was supposed to call you but I forgot. Upon going to retrieve my laptop and looking at the bill, I noticed a $50 charge for Norton Anti-Virus. I asked about it, reminding them that I'd expressly stated that I was happy with McAffee and was again told Oops! Well, it's too late it's already been installed with your information and cannot be re-sold. I was also never told that I'd lose programs such as Microsoft Office, etc. On top of all this, my laptop, with their Norton Anti-Virus, seems to be sick again. I won't be going back to Computer Cafe.
Description of Work: My laptop was not working properly and needed to be "cleaned." Windows had to be re-installed. I was using McAffee Virus protection software and they tried to sell me Norton, saying they'd had a lot of trouble with McAffee. I stated that I'd been using McAffee for several years without incident and did not wish to switch.

THE LAPTOP WAS BROUGHT IN FOR A VIRUS CLEANUP. HOWEVER WHEN TECH DIAGNOSES PROBLEM THE OPERATING SYSTEM WAS CORRUPT. WE TRIED A REPAIR INSTALLATION (SOFT INSTALL) AND THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THE ONLY WAY TO FIX WAS A FULL REINSTALL OF SYSTEM. DATA WAS BACKED UP AND WE VERBALLY EXPLAINED THAT SINCE THE OPERATING SYSTEM WAS CORRUPT WE COULD SAVE DATA FILES, HOWEVER, THE PROGRAMS WOULD NEED TO BE REINSTALLED. DATA WAS MOVED OVER TO THE SYSTEM. PROGRAMS WOULD HAVE TO BE REINSTALLED. DATA BACKUP WAS NOT CHARGED FOR (NORMALLY 2 HOURS OF BILLABLE TIME), AND IS THE REASON THAT THE SYSTEMS TIME IN STORE TOOK LONGER THAN EXPECTED. WE HAVE NOT HAD PROBLEMS WITH MCAFEE, ITS PROBLEM IS THAT ITS SYSTEM PROCESS INTENSIVE. IT SLOWS THE SYSTEM. WE HAVE HAD BETTER LUCK WITH NORTON IN THE PAST. THAT IS WHY WE RECOMMENDED IT. ALTHOUGH IT IS POSSIBLE THAT WE INSTALLED NORTON BY MISTAKE, HOWEVER, WE NORMALLY DO IT AT CUSTOMERS REQUEST AND THAT IS USUALLY GIVEN WHEN THEY DO NOT HAVE THE DISKS OR ABILITY TO RE-INSTALL THE CURRENT ANTI-VIRUS. WE WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO CREDIT THE COST OF NORTON FOR CUSTOMER. I CAN NOT VERIFY IF THAT OPTION WAS GIVEN.

Phone support and face-to-face customer treatment was excellent. Although when I went to pick up machine I could still see flecks of toner in the machine, technician had explained that I would need to run several sheets of paper to finish cleanup before machine would be ready. However, when I got printer home and finally hooked it up, I could hear the paper inside that the printer was telling me was still jammed. Since the technician did not have a toner cartridge (mine was faulty), he should have asked that I bring in one so they could complete the testing of machine before sending it home with me.
Description of Work: Technician diagnosed a problem (faulty toner cartridge), "removed" a paper jam, "cleaned" spilled toner inside, and replaced a part.

WE SHOULD HAVE ASKED HER TO BRING A TONER CARTRIDGE IN FOR TESTING. WE DID LET HER KNOW THAT WE DIDN'T HAVE A TONER CARTRIDGE TO FULLY TEST THE MACHINE. OUR TECHNICIAN THOUGHT THAT HE HAD FIXED THE PRINTER. THE MEMBER BROUGHT THE PRINTER BACK WITH A TONER AND WE FIXED THE PRINTER. WE OFFERED TO GO TO HER HOUSE FOR NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE IF THERE WAS ANY OTHER PROBLEM WHEN SHE GOT HOME.

COMPUTER CAFE WAS VERY PATIENT ON THE PHONE AND EXPLAINED THEIR SERVICES WELL. THE REPAIRS TO MY PRINTER WERE RATHER EXTENSIVE, AND I THINK I GOT GOOD VALUE FOR THE COST. THEY DID OFFER TO SELL ME A NEW, FASTER HP LASER PRINTER FOR ABOUT THE SAME COST AS REPAIRING MY OLD ONE. I HAD REASONS FOR NEEDING TO KEEP THE OLD ONE, BUT I WAS GLAD TO BE OFFERED THE CHOICE BEFORE I COMMITTED TO EXPENSIVE REPAIRS FOR AN OLD MACHINE. PARKING IS NOT VERY EASY AT THEIR LOCATION, BUT THEY WILL COME OUT AND HELP YOU CARRY THINGS IN AND OUT.
