We have come to know Richard over a period of years. We first hired him for our previous home and he built a gorgeous natural hillside garden. When we moved to our new house, we were excited to have Richard improve the landscaping. He provides a drawing of his work plan at every stage. He also points us to examples of the different ideas he is suggesting. He thinks like an artist and his vision evolves as the project progresses. He estimates on time and price are pretty on target. He has a few established employees who are respectful. They work hard and take direction. Whenever we have had a question or concern, Richard has been responsive. He explains his thinking and is willing to adapt the plan based on our input. The work he has done on our houses has included bluestone walkways, landscaping, retaining walls and steps, updating the gardens as needed. He follows up after each project and is committed to making sure that both he and we like it. When we have needed additional updates and maintenance, he is available and helpful.
Description of Work: Richard has worked on our yard in stages. Initially, he laid down 2 beautiful bluestone walkways in the front, then he worked extensively on the backyard. He did some work to flatten the yard, then created beds of plantings and flowers around the periphery. Where we needed a retaining wall, he created a very natural looking wall of boulders with naturalistic steps. Since then, he has come back and added to the garden at different points.

Richard is truly an artist. His knowledge of plants is amazing. He created a landscape that makes me smile every time I pull into my driveway. I would highly recommend Richard to anyone who wants a truly exceptional landscape.

We were absolutely delighted with Richard and his crew. Of all the contractors we consulted, he was the only one who offered to put together an outline design for us without charging first, so that we would know roughly what we would be getting. From that point on it was clear to us that Richard is a highly experienced and knowledgeable landscaper. He had many great ideas for how to create a border that would be both functional (in providing a screen between us and our neighbours) and aesthetically attractive, and his team were all a pleasure to work with; friendly, punctual, and tidy. Richard himself was full of good advice and has continued to be in touch since the job was completed to check on the plants. We would not hesitate to recommend his services to any of our friends.
Description of Work: Removed a large area of overgrown and unsightly shrubbery; cut down several dead trees and cleared out an invasive vine; designed a new border for one entire side of our front and back yards (120+ feet in length); planted numerous shrubs and trees and finished the border with mulch. Main job completed late 2014.

While Richard was not the lowest quote after talking with several landscapers, he did provide the most comprehensive proposal and did held firm to his initial quote. Work was done in the time frame discussed and appears to be of highest quality.

My guess is that the job was too big for him. He showed little interest, had no ideas and seemed a little overwhelmed. He said he would come back with a co-worker to take measurements in order to give us an estimate....never came, we never heard from him again.
Description of Work: He came for an initial meeting with us to walk the property and talk about the job.

Response from Richard Ivers Landscaping
I really feel bad about this review and will try to discribe what happened to me at this time. The day before I met with them I was discharged from the hospital with a serious illness from which I almost died.I was anxious to get back to work but I over did it and fell ill a second time.I usually like to be very responsive.I would have liked to get back to them but at that time I was unable to

We purchased a new house and did some renovation works. As a result, some area of the yard needs quite extensive rework in additional general cleanup of the whole property. Richard was actually the most expansive among the 3 estimates I received (all found on Angie's list) but his was the only one that came with detail design and planting plan. Because of his attentions to design and philosophy (work with the existing natural landscape), we hired Richard to do our landscape improvement project. Once the work was scheduled, it was completed timely and the results were fantastic. The new flower beds were beautiful and the plants compliments each other while being easy to took care of. Richard also continued to came back to check on the health of the plants and even water them when we were away on a vacation. I've also ask him to came several times for up-keeping advises which was was very glad to accommodate. In the end, you get that you paid for. Reasonable price for very detailed and professional work. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: - Design and install new flower bed (trees, shrubs, and perennials). - Grade and seed lawn. - Install mulch. - Flower bed clean up. - Bush/tree pruning. - Remove old tree stumps.

Richard ordered special "Goshen stone" (aka mica schist) for us to match a patio that was installed previously. Not only did he order the stone and handle the delivery, but he stored it offsite because our yard isn't large enough to accommodate that much stone. Working with a rough sketch I made of the yard, he installed one large circular path around the house, plus two sets of informal steps and an additional loop of stepping stones around a small garden pond. Richard has a good sense of design, picking stones that work well together and reshaping some of the stones for a nicer design. Average size of the stepping stones is between 20 and 30 inches. The project took around 3 weeks. I'm including a photo of the stepping stones around the pond. They were just installed and it's winter, so they look a little rough. I'll take another photo once the plants have had a chance to grow in.
Description of Work: Order and transport special order stone for project Install stepping stones around our 6600 sq ft. yard, plus informal garden steps. An additional masonry project involved repairing a stone wall next to the driveway, not included in this review.

Richard Ivers removed an old walkway and cement underlay to my house and replaced it with a new brick walkway. He completed a sketch and showed me several brick styles that he recommended. In contrast to what I had previously, he gave my walkway a slight arch/flare in its design which compliments the architectural style of my home. He layed the brick in a style which is unique and adds interest to something that otherwise is unimpressive. Richard has the knack of creating tasteful, aesthetically pleasing results out of hardscape material taking it above and beyond the average hardscape professional. Every homeowner wants work performed on their home to be cheaper than it is, but if his estimate is not the lowest, rest assure, you get what you pay for. He and his apprentice were professional, respectful, unobtrusive and easy to talk to during the process. I hated the idea of spending money on a walkway, but after Richard's handywork, I was actually excited (yes excited) with the end result. I have used Richard on 2 additional projects at my home. One project included taking a dust-ball ugly yard and transforming it into a wonderful backyard retreat with a beautiful patio. Richard continues to impress me which is not often the case. He really knows what he is doing and does it with skill and accuracy. His artistic eye gives him an edge over others that puts him in a league of his own.
Description of Work: Richard Ivers and his apprentice removed an old crumbly walkway and its cement underlay. He created a new brick walkway incorporating a new look he designed.

I wanted a nature path that would have the suggestion of a room at the end and one that included various ground textures in the path in the back yard with the plantings at the side, in some instances. I asked Richard to keep a couple trees that were already there. Richard described the trees and other plantings he planned to use and I agreed with his choices and found his suggested plantings to work out quite well. The plantings Richard used are withstanding the elements. And his designswere well executed and artistic. His ideas fell into place with mine and are working out very well.Richard followed through in all of the details of designing, carrying out and answering my questions. He always returned my phone calls and answered my comments in a timely manner. He has been punctual in keeping appointmentsand consistently responsive.I have been delighted with our professional relationship and feel Richard Ivers Landscaping did an excellent job and fulfilled my landscaping goals.
Description of Work: Richard consulted with me to find out what plantings I wanted, where I wanted them and then he did a mockup plan. After we discussed the mockup he made the design and planting locations Richard prepared the ground before he planted the trees and followed his plans.

Perfectly. On time, on budget. Mr. Ivers and his team were professional and friendly, and cleaned-up at the end of the job. We had seen the more extensive work that Mr. Ivers had completed on a neighbor's home (completely rebuilding the front steps, landing and walk with flat stones, as well as landscaping), which is why--in addition to the competitive pricing--we decided to go with his company. And we will certainly do so again when we are ready for a larger masonry repair/replacement we have planned in the future (backyard retaining walls, walkways, landscaping, etc.).
Description of Work: After getting three bids for masonry repair, we hired Richard Ivers and his team. Our house is a small cape, built in the 1930s. The pavers in the front walk and the outside landing had come loose and were scattered about, the cement had broken up and crumbled. We also needed repair work on the small brick stairs leading up to the front walk (mortar had come loose and fallen out--bricks had fallen out, as well), the small brick stairs leading up to the side of the house, and the front retaining walls (that had huge cracks). Mr. Ivers and his team did a fantastic job--even color-matching the new mortar to the old. It is absolutely impossible to see the repairs on either the front walk (now smooth as silk, all pavers in place), the landing, or on the brick stairs (seamlessly repaired, all bricks back in place, re-mortared). Impossible! The repairs on the retaining wall are a bit obvious, but this is to be expected, given the age of the wall and the size of the cracks (huge!), and--given the team's care in selecting mortar color--they will no doubt weather quickly to blend in with the rest of the wall (and, in any case, I sort of like the look of imperfection on retaining walls: character!). We could not be more pleased, and offer our highest recommendation to other AngiesList members. We will also be enthusiastically recommending this company to our friends.
