Philip promptly returned phone calls and arrived on time. He completed his work so fast that he had enough time for one other task that I hadn't originally asked him to schedule. The work was of hight quality, tool I would definitely use his services again, and will recommend him to neighbors and friends.

I have every intention to use Philips Electrical again.
Description of Work: Philip & technician arrived the first time to replace a light switch. They arrived on time, were extremely courteous, and the price was reasonable .I very much appreciated how he respected my home by covering his shoes and laying down drop clothes, then cleaning up well afterwards. He was even able to fit in the work before I had to get to my office. I also asked for quotes on other work and received them in email quickly and at good rates . I had him check a bedroom fan , which he found some issue with how prior owner secured it, so returned later to repair . Again repair work was done quickly and professionally and he charged me nothing for the fan repair.

To disconnect the plant light transformer, Philip's helper just cut the cord in two and left me with three bare wires dangling out of the cord. He said that it would have to be wired into a plug-in, but they didn't have one on the truck, and I would have to hire an electrician to do the work. ??? He said that they could go to the part store to get one, but they would have to charge me travel time. Well, if I knew that, I would have just cut the cord in two myself. Worse yet, even though they supposedly checked all the working phone lines to make sure they didn't cut them, THEY CUT THE UPSTAIRS PHONE LINE. Now I have no phone service upstairs. It's not the phone. I checked. I called Philip and asked him to make this right. He said that he would not come to my home out unless I paid him to the tune of $120, quite a deal according to him, because it is less than his $180 per hour rate. (He was at my home for about 1/2 hour and charged me $180.) He said that someone else must have caused the problem during the week. Yes, I had a painter here WHILE he was here and plumbers AFTER he was here, but they were not messing around with the wiring on the ceiling. He demanded money to show up and was very nasty. I would never, ever, recommend that man to anyone. I counted on Angie's List for a good electrician and was very let down.
Description of Work: I asked Philip to remove bunches of wire in the basement. They said it would not be cost-effective for them to do so because there were so many wires to objects that probably were no longer in service, it would take days to figure it all out. So I asked them to at least remove the old phone lines and old alarm system lines. I also asked them to disconnect a plant light transformer that had a cord running through some metal piping in the garage.

Response from Philip's Electric LLC
I want to start off by saying all work performed is Guaranteed and I take pride and am punctual in all jobs small or big! Yes, I did charge a $180.00 for a service call fee. Our rate is $180.00 for the first hours of labor and then prorated to $120.00 an hour thereafter for small jobs that have unknown possibilities. I always allow about 1.5 hours for first hour of service calls I am not clock watcher. I had arrived at the house at 7:45 and drove away at 9:25. I spend a half hour just talking to her never mind all the furnisher I had to move just to work. The member is selling her house and wanted me to clean up and remove all visible wiring in the basement along the center support beam and outer walls. Along this center support beam there was the entire wiring for the house. To removing it I would have had to rewire all those circuits which would have be very costly and taken more than just a couple hours but more like days. I had mentioned this to her saying it would not be cost-effective to do so if you’re selling the house but if would like I will rewire and remove all wires. She choose not to because of the cost I did remove all dead wires that were rapped together and not working anymore which were alarm wires that I had traced out. All phone lines worked before I had started and before leaving I did check all phone lines because we did cut wires in the basement. Yes she had multiple people working around the house. Throughout the house and that bedroom they were fixing cracks, sanding and painting the walls and in the basement they were painting and replacing the furnace which had a lot of wires around in that area. Anything could have had happened and I tried to explain to her all the could have’s with puncturing wires around the door frames and molding or if the painter left the phone jack hanging from the wall as he painted and could have pulled a connection apart she processed to blame me and that I ripped her off. All phone lines worked before I left and they were all cordless phones that I checked in front of her and gave back to for her to put back on the chargers with the exception of the office phone which is working. I could have spent days there removing wires but I choose to inform her of the extent of work in rewiring and cost of doing this job verse just sell the house and let the next people remodel the place rather than spending a ton of money to hide wires and not get a return on investment. The plant (pot) growing light which she called a plant light transformer was wired directed into a metal box with an outlet attached to it in the garage. My employee disconnected the plant light cord from the metal box, had he just cut the cord there would have not been three bare wires dangling. The wires she is talking about are wires part of the cord from the light not wires hanging out of the box that it was connected to. This light originally came with a cord-end which you would have plugged into the outlet but she had it wired directly into the outlet. I told her you can have a cord-end put on the light so you don’t need an electrician to reconnect it but I don’t have a cord-end in my truck. Yes I would have went to get her one if she would had liked so she wouldn’t have to deal with it in the future. I had told the member, I will come and fix the problem but if it was not something I did (cutting a wire) there would be a charge for me to come out and fix the problem. I tried multiple times to explain and take care of this situation but in the end she did not want to agree if it was not something myself or employee did that caused the phone not to work that she would be charged a flat fee of $120.00 to fix the phone line if we were not at fault for the phone not working. What more could I have of done and before I left all phone were working and I even had her check them and put them back on the chargers? I could have spent days there removing wires but I choose to inform her of the extent of work in rewiring and cost of doing this job verse just sell the house and let the next people remodel the place rather than spending a ton of money to hide wires. What a misunderstanding and good choose of wording to try and mislead Angie’s List customers about Philip’s Electric a three time Super Service Award Winning Company.

Due to some positive experiences with Philip on previous jobs, we hired him to do the electrical hookup for a new high-velocity central A/C. In doing this work, he had to do a lot more poking around inside the attic and walls then in the previous jobs, and he found a number of serious code and safety issues. He showed us pictures of the problems and took the time to explain them thoroughly, and we also knew some things about the building's history which corroborated Philip's claims. Philip took the time to redo things the right way, including moving light switches that used to be behind doors and rewiring things so that, for instance, one light switch now operates both of the overhead lights in the front stairwell. He worked with the city wiring inspector to make sure that all permits were in order. He and his team consistently showed up on time, and he was very communicative, both through phone and email, over the course of the job, giving status updates each day and explaining what areas he'd need access to. When Philip ran into unanticipated difficulties, due to finding out (once walls were opened, etc.) that the existing wiring had far more problems than anticipated, he reduced his hourly rate and did some work for free to keep things from going excessively over the original estimate, and also offered to come nights and weekends to get the job completed. Philip also took photos of the problems he found so that we'd have documentation of the problems left by the previous electrician. When we had some minor issues with the bath fan and one of the recessed lights after Philip was done, he came back at no charge to address the issues. We're extremely happy with all of the work, and our experience working with Philip to make it happen, and everything's been flawless since then. I have strongly encouraged the owner of the downstairs unit to also use Philip to fix the issues in that unit.
Description of Work: Hooked up high-velocity A/C; upgraded electrical service for a 2-unit condo building to 400 amps; upgraded service for each unit to 200 amps and common panel to 60 amps and replaced all breaker panels; installed sub panel in one unit; identified numerous serious code and safety violations in existing wiring and addressed by doing extensive rewiring of one unit; added travel switching in numerous locations and rationalized location of light switches; installed hardwired smoke detectors; replaced recessed lights; corrected issues with having too many things, or the wrong things, on the same circuit by adding new circuits.

Philip gave us an estimate over the phone based on our description of the work. He scheduled us for first thing in the morning (7:45) and was right on time. In about 10 minutes he was able to tell us whether he would be able install the outlet under a light switch without a lot of extra holes in the wall. Turns out he was able to do it on the same circuit as the light switch so it was a relatively easy job. (Another electrician had visited to give us an estimate and told us he would probably have to run a wire from the basement which would have been prohibitively expensive -- we're on the 2nd floor). He was able to install the other outlet on the other side of the wall from another outlet, which made that fairly straightforward as well. They also upgraded an outlet on an exterior porch to GFCI, tightened up a few loose outlets, and added missing circuit labels to our circuit box (they discovered it was mostly labeled, but we had just missed the labels). Philip and his assistant were friendly, professional, and fast, and everything looks and works great. I don't remember the exact estimate he gave us, but the final price was close to or less than the estimate.
Description of Work: Wired and installed two electrical outlets. Changed outdoor outlet to GFCI. Repaired two loose electrical outlets. Labeled electrical panel in basement.

Phil was great. I called and told him what we wanted done, and he gave us an hourly rate over the phone. We agreed to the job, and he and Jeff showed up right on time. He looked things over and got right to work. He went up in the attic, then came back down with good news. A lot of the cable did not have to be replaced. He also saved us some labor by installing one of the new drops by going outside, then inside. Saved us a ton of money. Phil had the job done in half the time we expected. He was efficient, cleaned up all the old cable, and did not waste any time. We will have him back later to do some outside electrical work. Thanks Phil Mike and Gail.
Description of Work: We had our old Analog coax cables replaced throughout the house, from the attic to the basement and had 2 new cable drops installed. Also had an older style outdoor outlet replaced with a GFI type.

We got multiple bids to do the work. It came down primarily to cost, scheduling, and confidence in the contractor's skill. Phillip and his crew did an excellent job installing 7 recessed lights in our living room ceiling. We were amazed by how few patches needed to be repainted after the recessed lights and switches were installed. They were very clean and careful in the house and friendly with our young kids. We are very pleased with the work and have hired Phillip to do additional work for us as well - in the kitchen, on the electric panel, etc. He's friendly to work with and has good ideas and suggestions. Definately will continue to use him as needed.
Description of Work: Installation of 7 recessed lights in the living room and wiring of new wall sconces and a dining room chandelier ($1400). We also hired him seperately to replace circuit breakers in the main panel, upgrade an outlet to GFI, remove a light switch near a bath tub, etc ($600). We've also hired him to change the electrical service for a new stove, to be done in the near future.

I was coming in from out of town to fix up some issues with my Dad's house. So, I needed a contractor who would be there on time, and who could take care of the issue quickly and thoroughly. Phil was great. His guy showed up right on time, called to let me know when he was en route, and took care of the issue straight away. Phil himself stopped by and introduced himself during the job, and checked on the work. I was really pleased that I'd found a contractor who could show up the next day, on time, fix the job without delay, and who communicated efficiently via phone and email. Since I was traveling, Phil emailed me the invoice and this worked best for me. If you're looking for professional service and efficiency, I couldn't recommend anybody higher than Phil's Electric.

I called for an estimate and Philip was able to come out the next day. An estimate was available the following day and we did the work about a week later. I appreciated that Philip used both email and phone effectively and when there were clarifications to be made he was proactive in contacting me about them. Kevin, who was working with him, made a very small hole in the wall/ceiling and hooked up all the lights from that one place - so not a lot of patching left to do afterwards. They cleaned up nicely and were conscientious about keeping dust off the furniture. I only got one other estimate which was for a little less but for the quality and efficiency of the work done I am pleased. He is young but professional and knowledgeable and I'd use the company again. Philip was also helpful in terms of giving advice about lighting types and where the lights might look best in the ceiling. I really had no idea and appreciated those ideas.

We were very pleased with the work. Philip, the owner, does his own work. He is punctual, and works very efficiently. He does high quality work, and cleans up around every work area. A couple weeks later, when we needed a certification form signed (something we hadn't anticipated), Philip stopped by our house the next day to sign the form (at no charge). We will definitely use him again for our future electric work.

Philip is the owner of the company. He was very efficient and he came home in a very short period of time and got the job done very quickly. I am happy with him in general. He is very polite, very professional and very efficient with the projects. He is on the expensive side because he comes really fast within 5 to 10 minutes and it was $150 which included the traveling expenses too. The quality is good. He is very responsive. He is very punctual. I would use him again in the future.

Philips Electric arrived precisely on-time and wasted no time getting right to work. Philip took the time to go over some issues with me prior to the installation of the ceiling fans. I thought the work was very done quickly and both Philip and his assistant, Kevin, were very professional and considerate. I am very pleased with the installation and all of the new light fixtures and ceiling fans look fantastic and work well. Also, I am happy to report that the ceiling fans work silently, no rattling or shaking, so I know they were installed correctly. Kudos on the clean-up, the work area was meticulously cleaned and the trash disposed of. Both individuals even took care to wipe their feet before walking into the house. I was very pleased with the work done and professionalism by this electrician. A+ -- I will be a returning customer.

Job went great. Phil emailed estimates and followed up via phone. The expectations he set that it would take 2 days and that our power would be out most of one day is exactly how the job played out. I had absolutely zero plaster dust cleanup to do after the installation of new outlets and ceiling light. He showed up on time and his apprentice offered to let our dogs in/out during the day while we were at work. Nice honest people who take pride in their work.
Description of Work: Upgraded electricity service to 200amps, which included replacing utility connection to house and wiring a new breaker box. He warned us that we might need to repaint after the outside utility line was replaced, but he was able to install it over the existing area so repainting isn't necessary. While he was there, we had some misc. work done such as adding 2 4-way outlets to an office, wiring a new overhead light and wall switch in a bedroom, and adding a new circuit for the bathroom

Philip never showed up for an appointment to do an estimate. When I called about 30 min after the planned time, he was surprised and admitted that he had not checked his calendar and had completely forgotten about our appointment. The no show was particularly frustrating because the estimate was on a condo I had not yet closed on. Thus, to set up this appointment, I had had to coordinate with the current owner, his broker, my broker, and my own schedule. Four different people had made time in their schedules for this to happen, and Philip didn't check his calendar. When I reached him on the phone, he was strangely matter of fact about it and offered to set up another time, but did not see fit to apologize for the inconvenience. Later, I thought perhaps he had figured I was just at my home waiting for him so no big deal, so I emailed him to make clear how many people he had inconvenienced and that we had all gone there specifically to meet up with him; I said "everyone makes mistakes" but that this made me question his reliability. He did not bother to respond to my message at all. His complete lack of concern about a potential customer's experience or his reputation convinced me not to try again. A simple email in response apologizing and indicating a desire to make it right would have convinced me to give him the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to a bad day. Blowing off my email just like he blew off the appointment convinced me instead to pass on this guy.

Response from Philip's Electric LLC
There is never a good excuse for missing any kind of appointment, but at least I was honest and straight forward. In the 6 years I have been in business this might be the 4th time this has happened virus all the times people have forgotten about there appointment with me. Its not that I didn’t look at my calendar, it is on my phone with reminders that go off. I was working late and lost track of time while the phone was in the truck. I apologized and offered to come by that night still which was already late. If you have lived there and owned the place this might not have been such as big of an issue. I didn’t respond to your email cause quite frankly I don’t need to respond to someone bad mouthing me and putting me down which was unprofessional on your behalf. I am a hard working individual that strives at being one of the best! I have a great reputation that I have built for myself and company. Don’t be discouraged by this post give me a call and experience the difference.

It took two visits to get the job done. On the first visit, which was Friday morning, Philip put together the lighting fixture, which had been shipped in many different pieces. He then turned on the switch, but the light didn't work. He wasn't able to stay to diagnose the problem, so we scheduled another visit for him to come back and figure out what was wrong. He came promptly the following Monday and discovered the light switch was broken inside. He was very pleasant and professional both times and we have no complaints. Each visit cost $150. I have nothing to compare this to, but it seems fair. We would definitely use him again.

From the moment Philip stepped into my house, I knew I was in the capable hands of a knowledgeable Electrical contractor. He assessed the job thoroughly and followed up promptly with a proposal. Within a couple of days of proposal acceptance he was back to perform the job, which he also completed promptly and very cleanly. From what I could tell Philip is a no nonsense guy and he'll tell you the job the way it is. He will not try to oversell you, and is very innovative in order to save you cost. He's already working on a second proposal for me for a future job, and I have also recommended him to a friend of mine.

From the initial estimate, I knew that Philip was the person I would hire. I saw 4 electricians about my circuit panel. Most recommended installing an additional sub-panel versus re-wiring an larger main panel. Philip was the only electrician who presented all the options to me, including some very cheap alternatives. He let the decision be mine based on my future needs and my confort level. I ultimately decided to go with the complete re-wire and his price beat everyone else's. On the day of the work, he was punctual, friendly and professional. I was here the whole time and these guys really worked and were respectful of my things when drilling and cutting for the outlets. After they left, I realized the doorbell no longer worked. I called Philip and he returned immediately that week to fix it. No questions asked. I am a new homeowner and was hoping to find an electician I could go to for all future needs and I think I found that. I would recommend Philip strongly.
Description of Work: Philip installed 4 new outlets in my home. In addtion, the breaker panel was old and did not have the capicty to support the additional outlet and a dryer that needed to be hooked up. Philip replaced the circuit panel with a larger one and basically re-wired the entire thing.

I called to get an estimate on having a roof vent in the attic powered up. Instead of coming out to the house to take a look, the man I spoke with just asked me some questions and then gave me an estimate based on my answers. Bottom line, his estimate came in at $1000 ($800 for labor and $200 for parts). We had 2 previous estimates done, one of which was $330 and the other was $756. Additionally, the work he told me we needed (which was to run a completely new circuit for our power vent - he actually told me that it draws a lot of power and couldn't tap off of another existing circuit), wasn't really needed. The electrician we finally went with told us that the vent only draws 4.5 amps (similar to a hairdryer). I got the impression that this company was just trying to rack up the hours (they charge by the hour, not by the job).
Description of Work: We were going to have an attic roof vent powered up.

Response from Philip's Electric LLC
Yes the person you spoke with was Philip Mendonca, Company Owner. Yes, I asked a serious of questions and explained to the customer with out looking at job and depending on what was available for power to install the attic fan that a dedicated feed maybe required. For example if you use the power from your bathroom outlet and there are other loads now you add the attic fan and it is going to running continuously and your using your hair dryer the bathroom lights and fan are running you may run the risk of tripping to circuit caused by an overload, or you use an outlet in the bedroom were you may have air-conditions in the window, computers, television, etc., you may also cause an overload After asking questions and explaining how I would go about proceeding I estimated the job on time and material base estimating it could take 2 hours or more if I had to run a dedicated circuit it could take up to 8 hours but not likely if there was a chase from the attic to the basement, if the basement was finished or unfinished to get the panel circuit, had to move storing boxes, furniture, etc. The job was estimated from $400 up to $1000 Philip’s Electric has worked on time and material to save pervious Angie’s List member money that has rated us very well awarding us with the Super Service Award. Electrical company’s all have different rates and methods and then there is your electrician who works on the side, at Philip’s Electric we try our best to educate our customers and make the right decision the first time so there is no future dilemmas. We are on time, work hard, clean and we meet our customer expectations!

Great. They came and gave me a quote the next day. Showed up on time and were very responses. Came out as soon as possible to do the job. Very nice and great work. patched all holes made. Couldn't even tell they had been there because they cleaned up after themselves. Would use again.
Description of Work: Had two pendant lights put in with a dimmer switch. Three lights changed out. One bathroom vanity light raised up.

Every step, from estimation to the cleanup, was performed efficiently and in a very pleasant manner. Everything was completed on time. The final price went slightly over the estimate, but within reason.I have absolutely no complaints about this company. I will definitely use them again.

Our a/c and heat system was not responding, we thought it was an electrical problem. Phil came first thing the next morning, checked it out and determined it was not an electrical problem. Despite this, he came back later that day with an HVAC guy to fix it all up for us. Turns out the whole system needed to be cleaned and tuned up, and there was a wire that needed replacing because it kept blowing the fuse. He was super professional and helpful, we will definitely contact him in the future if we need any electrical work done.

Philip is straightforward and honest. He works efficiently and cleans up well afterwards. It is unique to find someone who actually loves what they do and creatively thinks about solving problems and lighting. With one exception, Philip seems to manage his time well. He was extremely apologetic the one time he lost track of time on another project and missed our appointment. Irritating but not the end of the world. I think this is uncommon and all other times (4-5) Philip has been punctual and timely. Recommend Philip to anyone in Cambridge/Arlington.
Description of Work: Philip has installed ceiling fans, recessed lights and wall lights as well as given solicited advice on other miscellaneous home electrical projects and questions.
