We needed a light fixture fixed. Paul was extremely prompt in responding, asked the right questions, and managed to fix the issue the same day. On top of that - his costs are very reasonable. We are really impressed with his professionalism and work quality. Would definitely be contacting him for all our handyman needs.

Everything went well. Paul works hard and seems to enjoy the challenge of each project and successfully finishing it.
Description of Work: Paul installed a medicine cabinet and an LED light above the cabinet. He took off off its hinges to shave off the bottom so it would did not rub floor. Paul installed five shelves in a large closet to hold binders which he cut out of plywood.

The small tasks went well in general - making doors latch etc. However, the plumbing work of fixing a shower handle that wouldn't fully shut off was not correct. Basically, the handle was so loose, that when you turned it to be warm, gravity would pull the handle (lever style) all the way to hot. We dealt with it for a while, but then something came loose in the internal fixture and the shower wouldn't turn off. I had to pay a plumber to come fix it (for another $300). Paul did tell me that he wasn't a plumber, but if he couldn't do a professional job, he should not have attempted it. In addition, the door handle on a swing door had previously been pulled out of the door. His fix (not sure what it was) didn't last for more than 6 weeks or so. It pulled out again. All in all, he is a fix-it kind of person that is probably just fine for small tasks that don't require a lot of skill. Basically - I could have figured out everything he did if I had the tools and the time. Next time, I'll spend the money on some tools and do it myself. It was about $650 for time and materials.
Description of Work: Paul did a number of tasks around the house - fixing doors that didn't latch, handles that pulled out of swing doors, and a shower that didn't fully shut off.

Paul was punctual and very professional according to the tenants. Because I could not be on site we communicated by phone while he worked. Whenever there was a decision to be made he sent me pictures and gave me options. He then went to purchase the required materials and installed them. He got all the work done in the time he had forecast. He was friendly and proactive in his communications. He has a very good eye for the little things - in some cases he suggested simple repairs on items I had overlooked - very good. I saw his work a couple days later and it all looked great. Overall I am very happy with his work and will work with him again.
Description of Work: Paul fixed a laundry list of problems in our rental unit. He patched a small hole in the roof, reworked and repainted a wet corner in the ceiling, replaced a door sill, fixed a fence, tightened some dripping plumbing, changed ceiling tiles and a few other items.

I am going to try to write an honest and thorough review based on my experience. First of all, I hired him based on his many good reviews. I did notice a couple bad reviews that commented on lack of professionalism, but opted to focus on the overwhelming number of good reviews. For starters, my first few emails went un-noticed in his inbox - but after that, communication went smoothly other than some confusion in his calendar on the dates of service. To be honest, I sensed something odd over the phone in terms of personality, but ignored it. He arrived and did a good job with the A/C removal...but early on I noticed something off in terms of his professionalism and what was appropriate for conversation and action. My electrician also happened to be onsite that morning and also commented this to me. I decided to ignore this since he was doing good work....until my new window was broken - a legitimate accident - but it shouldn't have happened...and this is where things went rapidly downhill in my mind. He acknowledged that this was his fault and he would pay for the repair, but when I jumped in to tell him this was a new window and might need a whole new sash, he asked that i let him finish and not interrupt (i felt that this was inappropriate) - he didn't seem to comprehend how upsetting it was to have a brand new window end up broken (even if it would get fixed) and i had to tell him that it was best if he just left at that point since I was so frustrated. Furthermore, when discussing how timing would even work to get the window fixed, he discussed my leaving him a key - which I told him i was uncomfortable with - and he seemed confused that this would be an issue for me. And somewhere in the middle of this while he was waiting for me, he just flopped himself on my floor on his back and sighed out-loud...the whole experience just seemed so unprofessional.... I've worked with alot of different people since buying a new home and dealt with lots of different personalities, but this was the first time I opted not to hire again. On top of that, he was running late that morning (for legitimate reasons due to another job) and knew I had late afternoon/early evening plans - but still chose to take an hour long lunch break in town at a local restaurant rather than packing a lunch and trying to finish on time....
Description of Work: I was looking for a general handyman to do a few tasks. For starters, I hired him to remove some A/C units and also stain some new windows.

Response from Paul W. Gerzon Handyman & Carpentry Services
Well, you can't please everyone! I'm sorry [Member Name Removed] didn't like my personality or some behaviors. I find her report to be fair and descriptive of her experience. I don't know why someone with a negative experience wants to share that with the world. So my personal preference is not to reply, and to ignore all this, but of course people read the reviews, and as of this writing, her review is at the top of the list! So I must respond in some way. What shall I say? My most people enjoy my relaxed style of relating. Nearly everyone finds my work excellent, and I have countless repeat customers (since 2001). I am also trusted, as I have the house keys to about 30 houses in the Boston area, so I can go do work when no one is home. To me, "professionalism" does not mean stiffness or lack of relaxed friendliness! [Member Name Removed]'s views on this are different, I think. My success since 2001 with hundreds of satisfied customers suggests to me that my way of being is not bad. In fact, it works. [Member Name Removed] didn't like my personality, but most people have no problem with it. Some customers clearly love it, in fact! Rather than discuss her personality or any other such thoughts of mine, let me just ask you to please look at the next nine reviews, where you'll see I get almost 100% A's from nine different customers in the six categories. Their satisfied and happy experience with my work is far more common than [Member Name Removed]'s. So please notice them, as that is really all I wish to say about this review. Thank you.

The plumber had taken out a large, roughly 1'x2', chunk of drywall. I contacted Paul about repairing it. He replied within a couple of hours and was able to come by shortly after that. He was quick, professional, thorough and polite. He explained what he had done and cleaned up well.

We had just started leasing a house to a new tenant. The tenant had alerted us to some issues with some of the electrical outlets. We also knew there were issues with some of the doors that would need to be addresses. We also wanted to install new lighting in the house and repair some of the existing lighting if possible. We weren't sure if we needed an electrician as in a new house, the wiring would not be an issue. But in a hundred year old house, this could be a lot trickier. Paul advertised that he could do small electrical jobs and was up front about saying that he wouldn't know what required an electrician until he could take a look at the wiring. Paul did a great job with the doors, with the replacement of the non-working outlets and dealing with the lighting that was straightforward. He also helped us understand what we would need from an electrician (replacement of electrical boxes, etc.) which was a great help as well.
Description of Work: A number of small jobs in a house occupied by a tenant. This included adjusting strike plates on doors, cutting and planing doors, assessing electrical wiring for installation of chandeliers, trouble shooting non-working outlets and replacing them if possible.

Paul and his colleague Gary came to our residence on multiple occasions for a basement remodel project. We demo'd a kitchenette, moved some water lines, replaced a main shutoff value, replaced an outdoor water spigot with a freeze-proof model, ran a new fridge water line (pex), pulled and stapled new romex and installed electrical boxes, tiled the floor where the old kitchen cabinets were located, built a corner box with removable top to house the water meter and main shutoff. Everything went smoothly and Paul/Gary worked quickly. The quality of the work is superb. As usual, Paul was courteous, on time, and helped clean up the site.

I contacted Paul through Angie's List and he responded the next day. He requested that I email him with details about the job. This is were the communication became a bit difficult - maybe that email go lost or went to spam. I finally called Paul after 2 days and he responded right away via text message. We scheduled the date and worked out the details of the job. Paul communicated his rates and terms which I must say are very fair. The day Paul showed up, he knew exactly what needed to be done. I had purchased some of the supplies ahead of time but I needed to run to the hardware store to get additional supplies, which didn't take long at all since the store was around the corner. My better half stayed at the house while Paul did the work and I had to run to my job. When Paul completed the job, he sent photos of the completed work. He did an EXCELLENT job! The two doors he repaired, had never worked properly and Paul repaired them to perfection! I highly, highly, highly recommend Paul!

We left a message for Paul Monday afternoon and he returned our call that night. He had a job he hoped to finish Wed and be able to come to us Thur. He called Wed. afternoon with word that he could come Thursday morning. He gave us a time frame and then called again when he was on his way. He was professional, did excellent work, and cleaned up the work areas. The broken disposal was leaking badly so we couldn't use our kitchen sink so we were grateful he could come within a few days as he is much in demand. He sends an email telling exactly what he charges. He has a 2 hour minimum ($150) and after that in 15 minute segments. We would definitely use him again.

Paul was very responsive and sent Gary his assistant promptly, and on time as discussed. Gary installed LED under cabinet lights which were plug in and had to be modified to hard wired. He did a clean and excellent job. We also had some switch plates with dimmer switches changed out. Most importantly we had to get door leading to a nook removed so that our stacked washer-dryer could be replaced. Once the washer dryer was removed, while installing the new ones, we found that the vent and duct were damaged.Paul sent Gary back with a day's notice to do a major change in the ducting which went through our floor under our crawl space, to the outside. This was difficult work, but Gary was patient, calm and creative and got the job done. The W/D was installed the next day and then Gary did a beautiful job replacing the door and frame. You would not know anything had been done. Gary was always well equipped with the right tools for each task.
Description of Work: Multiple jobs, including installing under cabinet lights, replacing a switch panel with new dimmers and switches, removing door frame and door and reinstalling, removing old dryer vent and replacing with new metal duct and vent.

Paul is very kind, intelligent and calming, and efficient. We have an old colonial, and a section of plumbing drain pipe developed a leak, in the corner of the house, behind the kitchen counter, cabinets, tile, wall. We contacted Paul with the request to dis-assemble this section of the kitchen, then re-assemble, after a plumber had repaired. Several plumbers had said this approach, to widely open the entire 8' (vertical) of corner wall, followed by plumbing repair, was our only option. Paul located the leak by sequentially testing multiple fixtures, communicated his thoughts, then suggested we attempt an epoxy patch. Paul made the repair, and the leak is completely resolved, bone dry. This required none of the above mentioned dis-assembly. Paul was extremely respectful of the expected disarray that befell the area. We are extremely grateful.

Paul was terrific and very responsive. We had a new tenant who raised a few issues. We called Paul on the Friday of thanksgiving weekend and asked how quickly he could fit the job in. He promised to call back quickly. Within an half hour, Paul called back to report that he was able to move some personal commitments around, and come the next day. He very quickly and efficiently attacked the jobs and had the work completed in slightly less time than he estimated. In the past, Paul has been great at giving very accurate estimates when we've accurately outlined what work needs to get done. His estimates have been accurate for both time and costs. Paul was always open about balancing his work time with his family commitments, but we found this a plus not a negative....it helps make him the kind of guy we are comfortable having in our house and home. We have already recommended Paul to friends and will continue to do so.

It went very well. I called him and within three days he was here and he had the gutters cleaned in a couple of hours and they hadn't been cleaned in several years. And the most remarkable thing was that there was a lot of junk up there that they threw down on the ground and they cleaned everything completely. The price was extremely reasonable. The quality of service was very good. The responsiveness was outstanding; I think it was one of the few times I have called some place and not gotten an answering machine and Paul actually picked up the phone and I spoke directly to him. He said he would be here at nine and he was here at nine. He was very professional.

It's not easy to get in touch with him. Call and email him. After 3 or 4 messages, eventually maybe he gets back to you. He showed up late and took a very long lunch break (might have been 2 hrs, maybe more). Meanwhile, I sat around waiting for him, missing more work. He did the work quickly and in a sloppy way, eager to rush on to the next job. I hired him because I wanted high-quality professional workmanship. I wanted the work done right. That seemed to irritate Paul. Here was the coup de gracie: he set his tools on audio equipment (expensive stuff, which I borrowed from a friend) and then said to me and quot;Oh, is this one of those houses where i have to be careful about where I put things?and quot; Really? Shouldn't you always be careful in someone else's house? Ah . . just hire someone else.

Wow. This is interesting. I wonder what kind of person [member name removed] is, to write such a nasty review. I don't recall meeting her! Her significant other was there the whole time, and it is his name on the bill and on the account. He expressed happiness with all the work I did -- the TV and another small carpentry project. He wanted things done very well.He asked me back some weeks later to do more work. He expressed appreciation and gratitude for the work. We had a friendly and chatty time, in fact, both visits. Re some of her other comments: I called him about arriving later than planned, and that was no problem since he worked from home that day. I told him I'd take a long lunch, to do some personal things, and that was fine with him. I cannot account for why this [member name removed], who I assume is his significant other, would write such a negative review. I never dealt with her. It's as if she is practicing writing fiction or something! I'm always careful about where I put things, and arrive on time, and do good work, as most of the reviews below demonstrate. (Many straight A's...) I do sometime wish to spend time with my daughter or have other obligation or need, and do sometimes call about arriving later than originally planned, saying I will come on time, unless it's okay. This was okay (to repeat) and represents my balancing doing a good job for someone with having my own life and being a good father.

A friendly guy, Paul's quality of work was good but he just took much longer than he had initially told us on the phone ( 8 hours in the end not including breaks etc vs an initial estimate of 3 hrs). We were there for the first few hours and the work seemed to be coming along well but then we had to leave because we hadn't factored being there the whole day and he continued working and when we came back almost 6 hrs later, he was still there and the remaining work just shouldn't have taken so long. That being said, the work itself was nicely done but I think you just need to make sure you are around when the work is being done to make sure its going smoothly. He also offered to take $20 off the total at the end for having taken longer than expected but as it didn't make much of a difference to the total in the end, we just paid the full amount.
