Family operated for over 30 years. At Patrick Hourican Plastering, we have a clear and concise company mission statement: Deliver quality work, on time with a service-oriented attitude. We have been living out our mission statement in the Boston area since 1986.
As part of a bathroom renovation, we took the room down to the studs. Patrick quickly returned my first phone call and was at our house the next day for an estimate. The price was good and we scheduled the job. The day before Patrick was expected to plaster, we hit a delay in the project and he was very nice and accommodating about it. Several days later, the bathroom was ready and Patrick arrived with his two-man crew. He made sure that they were all set up and then headed off. The two men finished the job quickly and the walls look great. They were polite and answered several questions I had. They did leave behind a fair amount of trash, but I think that's standard with this type of job.
Description of Work: Installed blueboard and plastered the walls and ceiling in a small bathroom as well as a wall in the adjoining room.

Patrick returned my phone call promptly and came over the same day to give me an estimate. Due to a cancellation, he was able to do the job 4 to 5 days earlier. They arrived on time and covered hallways and stairs leading to the bedroom, as well as all of the bedroom walls. They were very efficient and cleaned up perfectly. The room has detailed mouldings around the ceiling which I didn't want to risk removing first, but Patrick was able to b*** the blueboard up to it nicely and the result looks great. (Another plasterer, also from Angie's list, had told me this wouldn't be possible when he gave me an estimate, and wanted to demo the whole ceiling.)
Description of Work: Patrick and his crew blueboarded the master bedroom ceiling and skim-coated it.

Overall we had a very good experience. Patrick was very responsive. He came over the day after I called him to get a quote and provided one quickly. He called me to tell me when he and his crew could come over. They arrived exactly when he said they would and finished the work in less than a day. When I noticed that an additional part of one of the walls they repaired was also in need of repair, Patrick himself came the day I called him, which was a Saturday, and fixed it himself. The crew dealt with moving furniture they wanted moved and covering other stuff. I thought the price was fair, and it was lower than the other quote I got. My one criticism is that they were a little messy. There were drips of plaster on several of the walls and window sills and part of a wall they did not work on was scratched.

I found Patrick's in Angie's list magazine, "no job too small." I had a small job so I gave him a call. We played phone tag for a few days, but finally scheduled a visit to check out the work. He stopped by on a Saturday morning and quoted $125. I was amazed at the price and agreed to see him some time in the future. Some more phone tag occurred, but nothing that was annoying - he always called back. We agreed on a time and he showed up to complete the job. He was extremely prepared to keep things clean with drop cloths and plastic. I appreciated the care he took when taping up the wall and furniture. He was done in an hour and the patching took another 12 ish hours to dry. I've since painted over the patching and it looks like there was never a hole! I will use Patrick in the future and recommend him as well.
Description of Work: Patrick patched a 2' x 2' hole in a wall left after some noisy pipes were fixed. He used drywall and plaster (and I'm sure other stuff) to do the job.

Patrick responded immediately to my phone call (within a day), came over the day he contacted me to provide an estimate and to look for other areas that needed work. He was the one who actually pointed out that the bedroom ceiling was about to fall in. Since it's a rental property, I hadn't even been in that room in a while. Patrick called me that night to give me an estimate and then called back to say he had a cancellation for Saturday the 15th. Needless to say, I grabbed the date. I let him into the house with his crew and 3 hours later they were done. It looked amazing and my husband said that that's what we should have done over 10 years ago when the walls in the kitchen began to sag. We've tried having folks fix it in the past, but Patrick was the only one who really explained the whole thing to us. He's now a fixture on my cell phone address book.
Description of Work: Patrick and his crew put up blueboard and plastered all the walls of our kitchen and replaced part of a bedroom ceiling that was about to fall in. Our home is very old and Patrick was working over horsehair plaster. He finished the whole job in about 3 hours and it looks amazing! Those walls aren't going anywhere, now.

Partick responded to my phone inquiry promptly and showed up at my house an hour later to look over and estimate the job. He was pleasant and easy to talk to. His optimism about the job was a selling point. He mentioned parts of the work that would be tricky, but didn't seem fazed by the complexities. The estimate was very reasonable and the time frame (one week) within which he could perform the work was perfect for us. He brought a four-man crew on one day to prep the space and finished the following day. Plastering is messy and dusty, but I was surprised by how well-contained the mess was.
Description of Work: Patrick and his crew prepped and plastered a large living room with cathedral ceilings and a bathroom. The job was complicated because of several skylights, many nooks and crannies in our 200-year-old house, and the height of the gable portion of the ceiling and staircases.

Patrick was immediately responsive to my call for an estimate on this small job and even stopped by that evening to review the proposed work. Gave me a verbal quote on the spot and asked if he could do the work in a week. That was acceptable to me. His estimate was in line with the other two I had gotten but I selected Patrick because he didn't shy away from the job because it was small. Other two companies would do the work I was asking for but made it clear that they didn't normally do this small of jobs. I will note that all three companies each recommended a different way to repair the cracked and damaged walls. Patrick himself arrive to do the work at the time he said he would and was done in about 3 hours. He did a great job and I'm truly pleased with the work.

Came on time-very nice, polite, explained the procedures he'd use. Uses blueboard, not skim coat so my ceilings would have been half an inch lower, which may not sound like much but they're not that tall to start with! That's the primary reason that I did not go with his company.

When I called he came out the next day for an estimate which I received in writing a few days later. Three portions of wall had been cut out in my daughter's closet and linen closet due to a flood. It was a little tricky to schedule because it was such a small job so the time was set only 2 days in advance. However, on the scheduled day/time he came and was done in less than three hours. The area was clean of all debris and dust. He took care of removing old shelving that needed to be removed from one of the closets. The walls are extremely smooth. His estimate came in $200 less than others I had received so I was a little nervous but without any justification. This was an excellent job.

Overall I was disappointed with Mr. Hourican's work. During the estimate visit, he said that he would plaster all cracks and leave them in good enough condition so that I only had to sand very lightly before painting over them. He also strongly cautioned me right after doing the work, to only sand lightly before painting; that his work did not need anything more than a light sanding. When I looked at the work, however, I found it had been too sloppily done for a light sanding, and I had to sand quite vigorously and for a long time to smooth out some of the thickened areas. Also, there were areas where he had left thick edges that did not blend at all into the existing plaster board. This was especially true in transitional areas, such as where a wall becomes a closet opening, or where a crack was plastered over and meets a 90 degree angle in the wall. There were many places like this one. I was very disappointed in the quality, as I was assured and I assumed that he was a professional plasterer. I hated having to work so hard to repair the work of a professional. I would not trust him again to do the kind of quality work he promised and did not deliver.

Patrick did a fantastic job. He returned my call the same day and came by the house the next day to give a quote. We called him 2 days later (a Monday) to ask him to schedule the job. He scheduled us in at the end of the week. He called on Wednesday night to say they would do the job on Friday morning at 7:00 am. Friday morning at 7:00 am he came with his crew. They had the whole job done at 10:30 am and cleaned up and gone by 11:15 am. Patrick came back about 3:00 pm and cleaned any dust and washed the floors. What a perfect job. The ceiling looks like glass it is so smooth. I could not recommend Patrick Hourican Plastering more. We are going to have him do some additional rooms upstairs during the winter.

Overall he did good work in a short period of time. The ceilings came out great, Patrick put up drywall and then skimcoated it. The patches seemed messy and required some attention before we painted over them. I think that might be standard, though. We ended up having to reschedule him a few times, and he was very amenable to the changes and worked around other work being done in the house. Three concerns should be noted: 1. He came earlier than expected and therefore, the rooms weren't cleared out. He proceeded to throw our belongings/antique doors into closets resulting in some badly damaged doors that we will now have to spend time fixing (or money replacing). 2. He put a sign advertising his business in our front yard - he did not ask for permission to do this, and it is not allowed by our condo association, so we had to move it. 3. He scheduled his work with our electrician, which was fine with us, but never bothered to check in to let us know he was done with his work. This resulted in some time delays on other things we wanted to do within the house.

There had a been a water leak in the bedroom, and he laminated over the existing plaster, and plastered over the laminated blue board. Everything went very, very well. They were prompt, got things moved that I couldn't do myself, and they were as clean as anyone could be in a messy job like this. They covered everything perfectly, and there's no sign of them being there beside the fact of the ceiling being fixed. Overall, I am completely satisfied with the work that they did.

Mr. Hourican was responsive, friendly, knowledgeable, and punctual. His team did the work as promised. We had a few problems--the crew put the banister in the garbage rather than reinstalling it, and they lost several good brass switch plate covers. There were also a couple of difficult areas where the work was initially sub par. Mr. Hourican corrected the problems as soon as they were brought to his attention and reimbursed us for the lost switch plate covers.

First floor kitchen ceiling was damaged when second floor kitchen flooded from pipe leak. Beaver board ceiling panels had been installed on top of original plaster ceiling. The beaver board absorbed quite a bit of water and pulled away from the original ceiling. I call Hourican Plastering, my call was returned the same day. Patrick came by the next day, a Saturday, to look at the job. He called me the following day to give me the estimate. I called Patrick back on Monday and the job was scheduled for the following Monday. His crew came in early, they pulled the old beaver board panels down, installed the blue board and added the plaster, and cleaned up all before noon. His crew was very quiet and efficient, and very polite. Patrick came back later in the day to haul the remainder of the of the trash from the demolition. The new ceiling looks great, he also skimmed some of the wall around the kitchen sink that had cracked from the water. I would not hesitate to call on Hourican Plastering again.
Description of Work: Removed water damaged beaver board ceiling in kitchen, that was attached to the original ceiling. Reinforced water damaged original ceiling. Installed blue board over entire area and plastered.
