John's Landscaping Service replied right back to me when I left a message looking for a quote on service. They said they would send someone out the next day to look at my yard and then prepare a quote. The quote came back at $750, which included two clean-ups, one in early Nov. and one later in Nov. The price was more than I was used to paying, but because I have a fairly large yard with dozens of trees surrounding it, I knew it would be a big effort. I needed to have the work done, so I went with it. I wish that I was able to talk to someone when they came out to look at the yard and give a quote. First of all, I happened to come home when the first clean-up was being performed, and there was a section of my property that wasn't cleaned up. I had to explain to the team where my property lines were because the property lines aren't necessarily symmetrical. This could have been avoided if I met someone when they came by to make an estimate. Second, both times the team performed the clean-up, they left a 4-5 ft strip of undisturbed leaves that runs along the border of my neighbor's driveway (so about 15-20 feet). My neighbor has already cleaned his yard, so now there's a whole patch of stuff that has to be cleaned. It's right on the property line, but 1) now it looks ridiculous, 2) I'm probably going to have to clean up the rest of it, and 3) if there was a question about where the property line was, or if they should go right to the driveway, why didn't someone ask? When I mow the lawn in the summer, I don't leave a patch unmowed. Ultimately, the service was fine, but I'm not sure if I will use John's Landscaping again due to price and some of these minor inconveniences.

Response from John's Landscape Services Inc
We would encourage this member to call our office and deal with us directly. We would happily send a crew out to address any concerns he may have. We have not received any message from him regarding any issues until reading this review. We are customer service oriented and a simple call or email to our office would have left this member over whelming pleased. Regarding meeting for the first estimate. If it is requested, we are happy to do so. However, on most occasions for general maintenance services most clients are not requesting to meet. If this client had requested it, we would have certainly met him. Regarding property line leaves, it sounds as though these leaves are on the neighbors property but when this member mows his own lawn he cuts that strip for the neighbor. We are very respectful of neighbors properties and do not do any work on the neighbors property unless specifically given permission (even though it may seem logical to do). You would be surprised at how many neighbors do not want anyone touching their property and then we get caught in the middle. We always encourage our clients to reach out to us directly with any questions or concerns instead of posting on a site like this. Angie's List is more concerned about advertising dollars than getting it right for the client. At John's Landscape we want to make sure our clients are happy and completely satisfied with our work. Any questions can be directed to John@johnslandscape.com. Thank you.
The work was timeline and extremely well done. John's was extremely professional and we absolutely love our garden!
Description of Work: John's removed the grass in our front yard and created a stone walkway and ground cover garden with different types of plans and bushes to create a colorful, season long garden of texture and depth. They also installed an irrigation system in our front and rear yard and amended the soil in our raised planting bed to prepare for vegetable gardening.

The Angie's List Profile for this contractor states the service are is the "Entire Area" however this is obviously false advertising because when I solicited a proposal for a seasonal lawn care services contract, the response I got was, "We do not provide maintenance services in Dorchester."

Why would Angie's post this review? It makes no sense. Angie's limits how we break down our areas of service and its not by individual service offered per area. We do offer landscape project work in Dorchester; Landscape Design and Installation, Hardscape Design and Installation and general landscape projects. However at this time we do not offer weekly maintenance services in that area. Reason being is that with the limited requests for weekly service we could not be This person contacted us regarding Landscape Maintenance Service in Dorchester and we replied within 24 hours that unfortunately we do not provide weekly maintenance services in that area at this time. My response was timely and professional.

John was great to work with. they first quoted me more for doing additional work and then we pared it down to the essentials based on my budget. John was easy to communicate with about my needs. He has a manager of some kind, Toni who keeps you in the loop and is a contact point while John is out on jobs. The work done was very good and they were very available especially given the high demand time of late summer. I was very happy to come home and see how nice the yard looked. They aren't inexpensive but you get what you pay for. I'd use John again for sure.

As a property manager making the call to John's was one of the best decisions I have made...landscaping used to be a challenge. Now it's a call to John's...when residents take the time to stop and tell me how beautiful our property looks...to me there is not a better feeling. ..his staff does all the work and I get the benefit and praise of all the residents.
Description of Work: John's initially provided a proposal to repair several brick paver walkways throughout a property that I manage. Even before the job began I knew John's was something special...they provided samples and was able to match what was existing flawlessly. Residents were pleased with the project and John's crew was as pleasant and professional as could be. After my positive experience with this initial project I recommended John's be given the opportunity to continue providing service for all our landscaping and property enhancement needs, this initially included regular routine maintenance but now includes tree & shrub pruning, irrigation and lawn sprinkler maintenance, seasonal flowers and anything you can think of that adds curb appeal. John's has also installed various flower beds, trees, cobble walls and walks.

After removal of a swiming pool, we were left with a gravel patch covered with weeds. John graded out the pool area and the adjacent lawn to correct a steep bank. New loam was added to the entire yard, and raked out very well. This was followed by Hydro-Seeding. John's men were very pleasant and helpful. I would hire them again.
Description of Work: John's Landscaping rebuilt my back lawn.
John's Landscaping was very professional and prompt. John showed up on time and had some really creative ideas for a design. His design team does a great job and worked with us through multiple revisions of the project. The install was done on time and in a professional manner and the yard looks great.

I have a lot of trees and it was important that I be consulted on the work while they were there. They did a great job - the crew was the same as last year (I used them in Fall 2013) and they really worked hard all day. Each person was really good at what they did (the hedge trimmer was fantastic - I have a long over 7 feet high hedge in the front). They were friendly and even did some small tree replanting that wasn't on the schedule. Lisa also came to look at the yard and made some great suggestions, as well as getting some new last minute additions. They were punctual and I will definitely use them again next year. I did get quotes from several other landscapers but they were higher and they also did not follow up with making appointments.

John's group of three workers and designer completely cleared my urban jungle in one day -- while preserving the sacred items that needed to remain -- a very old dogwood in an awkward place, for example. They listened to my wishes the following day and planted everything as requested adding touches such as edging detail that enhanced the whole job. My only regret is that John's initial view of my place was not done as an in person visit with both of us discussing the project. His initial estimate that included a retaining wall and steps was higher than others and I didn't pursue. Judging from his quality of workmanship, I would have preferred to work with him, but a signed contract prevented this. I look forward to working with John's Landscaping going forward.
Description of Work: John's Landscape has been extremely helpful while so many contractors do not followup. Despite awkward timing with another contractor (masonry), John was generous enough to work around it and provide timely and well done landscaping. His designer was extremely gracious about my ideas and offer supportive advice to arrive at a very satisfactory result.

John and his team always do a great job. This latest job was one of many that they have done for us and the work has covered a wide range of services - yard waste removal, mulch spreading, stone work, sod, etc. they do it all and I recommend them go everyone. Work is done correctly, at a fair price and as-promised. Everything is handled very professionally. John is hands-on, meaning he is always available for questions, discussion or consults. Just a professional, well-run operation from top to bottom.

They my not be the cheapest but I can a sure you you'll get what you pay for and more!
Description of Work: They arrived before 8 A.M. and worked until after 4 P.M. Every part of the job was done beyond my expectations. The trees where exactly what I had hoped for and more. They did more then they had too. They fixed a tree that the city had planted as well. The crew was a pleasure to deal with very well organized.

We are quite disappointed with Angie's list - we hired John solely based on of his reviews here and it turned out to be a very bad experience. With John's, we never had a reliable contact who would be knowledgable, responsive and predictable schedule-wise. John sends different people to the property at random times, most of them don't know what the previous person did / did not do. The woman in the office is very unpleasant and the communication between John and his various crew members is non-existent. Some of the work they do is ok (and some of the workers are actually nice), but their customer service was dreadful. Would never recommend John's Landscaping to anyone. P.S. The entire amount of their bill ($5,200.00) was paid in full before this review was posted. Not at all surprised by the company's response - this seems to be their usual way of responding to any negative feedback (either this customer doesn't exist or this was all fabricated). Well, we do exist and we have a very bad experience with this landscaping company. Don't make the same mistake we made.

100% complete fabrication of the events. These people simply did not want to pay their bill for the work that they requested. I dealt personally with both (member name removed) and (member name removed) (her husband). Him more than her. He was an extremely rude and ignorant person. Spoke rudely to my office staff as well as my crew. They signed up for a spring clean up of the property and then a new lawn installation. The clean up was completed first and the lawn installation soon after. Everything was executed professionally and they seemed to be happy. They requested an additional area, be weeded and we sent our operations manager by to look at the area. They sent him away, saying that he did not have an appt. We then coordinated a time to do review the weeding and scheduled a time to do this for them, which we did to 100 % satisfaction. The next round of emails from (member name removed) were concerning the new lawn. This was with in 2 weeks of a new hydroseed lawn. I explained how it takes time for germination etc and that he did not had a sod (instant) lawn installed. I explained how growing a new lawn is a process. The same explanations that were given before we did the installation. (member name removed) started complaining and talked about refusing to pay etc, wanted a discount etc. I refused and told him that email communication was getting ridiculous and that we should meet on-sight to review the lawn and discuss in person. This meeting was scheduled for Monday June 16th. On Saturday June 14th I received the following from them: From: (member name removed) <[email removed]> Date: Saturday, June 14, 2014 12:58 PM To: Toni Pascuccio Cc: John Tighe , [member name removed] Subject: Re: [member info removed] - Returned your call Hi John, We would like to cancel our appointment on Monday morning and cancel any and all services with John's Landscaping. Please send us your final bill with what you consider a fair amount in this situation. Please also provide the credit card payment instructions, as it will allow us to pay the bill sooner. Thanks, (member name removed) I was not surprised by this because, I know that there would have been nothing to be addressed at that meeting as the lawn had come in and looked great as it continues to do so. In that email above, they ask for a "fair amount", which to my response was the amount estimated for the work requested. They have since paid in full the $5250.00 that was estimated. I have over 20 emails with them directly. They had the point person to deal with, they were not dealing with multiple people. Our operations manger was the only person who met with them other than myself. I honestly believe that they just did not want to pay their bill. They had mentioned on the original estimate that they had limited resources but wanted to get an estimate for the work. They kept asking for a discount, paying only 1/2 etc etc, all of which made no sense since everything was completed at their request and everything looked great. To re-iterate - the work was pre-estimated, accepted, scheduled and completed in an efficient manner and within the quoted price. They were happy with the work once completed, please see from the email below: Hi John, Thanks for working on the lawn the other day...... ...Thank you very much. (member name removed), (member name removed). Communication with them was flawless, as noted in emails below: Hi John, Thanks for your prompt response.... Thanks, (member name removed) It is unfortunate that Angie's List does not research these reviews BEFORE allowing them to be posted. If any member has any questions on thei review or would like to discuss with me directly I can be reached at john@johnslandscape.com. Thank you, John Tighe President John's Landscape Service Inc.

John's Landscape Service had previously done some maintenance and cleanup on our yard when we had fallen behind due to work and travel. As we were very happy with those previous results, this year we contracted them for a full Spring Cleanup, as well as weekly Lawn Cutting services. So far, we've been equally happy with the quality of service as we were last fall--the lawn looks great, service is done on schedule (or at least as close as holidays and weather will allow), and everything is neat and tidy afterwards.

I didn't know when he was coming, and when I came home from work, I had discovered that he had been there. I couldn't tell someone had been there yet because I didn't have the smell of new mulch at all. There were still some weeds remaining in the beds and the right of my driveway where I have rocks only, there were weeds that weren't touched. My back yard is a T-shape. They said they had come and looked at it and gave me a price of $450.00. Last year I got the whole yard done for $500.00 from a different company, so I thought that's a good price. However, they only did straight back and not the sides, so all of the leaves and debris on each side were left. They did say they would come back for another $225.00. However, I declined.

From soup to nuts, a great experience with John's Landscape and John himself. Brought three landscapers out to get quotes for a backyard project: remove the remnants of a stonewall that spanned the length of the backyard (approx 28'). What remained of this wall was dirt, rocks, hedges, tree and plant roots. We had removed the stone facade the previous year. The first quote was for $1990, the second quote was about $900. John came in the lowest at $750. He returned phone calls promptly, emailed a detailed estimate to us very quickly, and completed the job within a week or two (once the ground had thawed). The crew did a fantastic job - made short work of what would have taken us several weekends to complete and left everything cleaned up (even reassembled our swing set that needed to be taken down to access the wall with a mini excavator). They had to bring in a bobcat which wasn't on the original estimate, but we were not charged any extra for that. I would definitely recommend John's Landscape Services and will certainly be calling them for future projects.

The brick work was fine. The landscaping for the walkway was not done well or to our specifications. We asked for changes which were never addressed. We withheld part of the payment hoping to have the company contact us. Finally the owner filed a claim in small claims court. The court found we should pay a portion of the final bill not the entire amount being claimed. Note that day Johns Landscaping had several cases before the court that day.

It really is a shame that Angie's List does not verify reviews before they allow them to be posted. There are blatant lies in the review. Please see [member name removed] emails to me below! She was very happy with the work and simply did not pay her bill while her house sat on the market for sale. Backgroud of project: [member name removed] was a client in 2011 and 2012. They were preparing to sell their home in 2012 and wanted the front walkway area improved. We pre-estimated the work and the client was very pleased. They summer on the Cape and told us to proceed with the work while they were away. When the work was completed they were very pleased but had a question on one of the plantings which we immediately made ourselves available to address for her. Unfortunately she did not respond to our request or options to switch out the one planting she did not like. She was so pleased with our work that she requested a referral to a roofer which we provided in an email below. Please see the email exchanges between us and the client: (Susan in the email is our office manager) Hi Susan Please tell John the stairs and the walkway look great. As far as the plantings-it looks great. However I thought your designer was supposed to send ideas. I am sure the plants were chosen for hardiness and price. Most of the choices are fine except we don't like the grassy, fern like plants. What can be done? [member name removed] _____________________________________________________________________________________ [member name removed], Happy to hear your happy with the walkway and stairs. Sorry for the mis - communication on the planting. You told me to go ahead and get something in and I said my designer would put it together for you. Anyways, Lisa (designer) said we could switch out the grasses for Black Eyed Susan's or is there something else you have in mind. Let me know and I can switch it up for you. Regards, John Tighe _____________________________________________________________________________________ John, Sorry not too get back to you sooner but this is the first chance I have had since last week. I am not sure what I want to plant. If Lisa could get in touch with me maybe we could discuss some options. I am usually available after 4:30 weekdays and we will be home this weekend. Also need the name of the roofer you recommended. By the way we have a great feedback from the work done Thanks for all your help. [member name removed] _____________________________________________________________________________________ [member name removed], l have cc'ed Lisa on this email. I have asked her to contact you to meet to go over any changes you may want in the planting. The roofer I use is Tim Leahy 781-727-1836. I mention to him today that you may be calling. Thanks John __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Unfortunately, we never heard back from [member name removed] and our designers emails / calls were not returned. After attempting to resolve this several times and after receiving confrontational emails from her husband we were forced to send this to small claims. Her husband later apologized for his confrontational email. See below: Hi John, I sent that under some tight time constraints here and in re-reading, it came across more confrontational than I had intended. -[member name removed] ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ We won the small claims case outright. [member name removed] was found responsible for the amount owed. Small claims does not award late fees so they were subtracted from the final amount that the court determined that [member name removed] had to pay. (Before court we had offered to wave late fees to get the actual amount owed paid). The [member name removed] filed a counter suit which was dismissed by the court in favor of John's Landscape.. Regarding small claims in general. - Each year John's Landscape provides service to over 1000 clients. Most are exceptional clients but there are always a few who choose not to pay their bills. After and only after several attempts to resolve any dispute or offer a payment plan, the client that ignore us get processed through small claims. This is an absolute last resort for us. We only go on 1 day per year which is why the [member name removed] noticed that their were other cases called that day. Most as usual were no shows. It is extremely frustrating when a client simply chooses not to pay a bill after requesting our services. Over all we have excellent clients and are very lucky to have them. Most pay promptly and communicate with us when there is some reason it may be delayed. We are overly understanding when a client requests a payment plan or delay in making a payment for one reason or another. We work very hard to keep all clients pleased. If there is a problem or an issue I personally work to resolve it for the client. Only when a client refuses to engage in the solution process or totally ignores us all together are we forced to elevate it to small claims action. If anyone has a question or concern on this review or my response, please do not hesitate to conatc me directly at john@johnslandscape.com or my cell at 347-236-0531. I found the company on Angie’s List and it was easy to schedule an appointment. I wasn’t home for the work on the day they said they would come, but they did come on that day to complete the work. They did a very good job with the mowing. However, I felt that they were really expensive. Also, I did not want my lawn mowed every week and if they agreed to mow my lawn regularly, they would only do it on a weekly basis.

I am pleased that this member was pleased and happy with our work. The $125 for the cut was because it had not been cut in over a month. We do not typically do "on call" mowings on a regular basis which is why we offered our weekly plan. Weather and conditions permitting we are able togo to an every other week service, but not in the spring growing months. Again we are happy that this client was pleased with the services that we provided.

I had never met him so I was not impressed that he did not make an appointment so I could show him what I needed, however, I happened to be home and saw him outside, otherwise I don't feel he would have known exactly what I wanted though I had left a pretty detailed account on the website (very good one, btw). He was personable and explained what he would do and we had a detailed estimate via email by the afternoon. His estimate was a bit higher than others we received so I didn't hire their services. I was very impressed by the promptness in answering my contact with them and in providing an estimate. Perhaps they could add something on the website asking if the homeowner would like to be present when the estimate is made.
Description of Work: John came by the house to provide an estimate.

Angie's Members, There is always an option to meet with me prior to estimating if desired. For the more routine estimates we often suggest us taking a quick look and then we provide some detailed budget numbers for the project and if that looks good we schedule a meeting to review and answer any final questions before the project begins. This is the most efficient way for everyone involved. What I hear most is "I really don't know how much this will cost". So we are able to provide budget numbers for the client to determine if this project is something that they would like to proceed with.

We asked him to be very careful of a newly seeded lawn and use equipment that was light and not heavy to not damage the tender grass, he used a ride on mower that created deep grooves in the lawn when he made a turn. We also wanted the lawn cut to three inches and his men refused to reset the height of the blades and the lawn never became healthy. He also reneged on removing poison ivy he said he would remove when we first hired him. This was five years ago, so we have no knowledge if he has changed to be more accommodating to special needs.
Description of Work: He was supposed to provide grass cutting and lawn maintenance every 2 weeks along with hedge trimming and poison ivy removal.

This is an absolute RIDICULOUS review something that ANGIE' should be ashamed to allow on its site. There is not one once of truth to it. I can not even confirm if this person was a client 6 years ago without pulling files that are retired after 3 years. What I can say is that everything that was written is 100% false. Why Angie's List allows a self admitted 6 year old review (either positive or negative) is of question to me and the reliability of the information listed on this site.

John and his team were very professional and did a great job. They were very responsive, and extremely helpful. We appreciated all the guidance from his design team. We look forward to working with them again.
Description of Work: Removed all existing plants including two trees. Installed new pavers. Planted new full garden.
John was great. He was extremely responsive. We got a few quotes and the job we wanted done would have been about 4x our budget. John was creative and proposed a much more affordable work-around. He completed the work very fast and when he said he would. He was able to repurpose existing materials to create a nice trim around our backyard. The outcome was way better than we ever expected! The price was most reasonable to begin with but John was able to work with us a little to get the number within our budget. Would definitely recommend!
Description of Work: Removed overgrown weeds, resurfaced patio, reworked existing materials to create nice trim (due to our own cost constraints)

John's Landscaping crew was here for one and one-half days completing our spring cleanup. The crew was here on time, worked hard, and was neat and professional. The quality of their work was excellent, and I plan to have them back again to do next spring's clean up.
Description of Work: Full spring clean up of one acre yard. Included removal of last leaves fallen previous fall, cutting back/trimming all plantings, refreshing extensive mulch beds, dethatching and raking lawn, and first lawn cutting of the new season. Also included digging out an approximate 200-300 sq. ft. area of dead grass, putting in 6 in. of fresh topsoil, and reseeding/mulching the area.
