Glenn and his team were easy to work with. He has a strong knowledge about old houses. Glenn really listened to what we wanted, making several iterations of the design, and he was patient when we made decisions slowly. There were no cost surprises, and he worked with us as we changed the scope of the project. Their work is meticulous, and they were clean, respectful, and friendly to everyone in our family.

Glenn's team did excellent work. The bathroom space is quite small and our house is old so nothing is level or square. Despite these problems, the work was very well done and we are completely happy with the results. Glenn worked with my wife and me to solve a number of design challenges the job presented. The roll-out cabinet was a great solution to our storage problem in the bathroom. Glenn has a "can-do" attitude and is unflappable. No matter what problem popped up (and they always do in old houses), Glenn found a clever solution. He also has great suppliers who have excellent products and who also worked with us to come up with choices that fit our needs and budget. Acton Woodworks is not cheap. You can probably find lower quotes from other contractors but we felt we got good value for our money. And if Glenn said he'd do something, he did it. Totally reliable. We would certainly hire him again.
Description of Work: Complete bathroom remodel including a new heated floor, all new fixtures, and a custom made roll-out cabinet. Also, added a linen closet in bedroom, finished a previously unfinished closet in another room, and installed new support columns in basement.

Glenn asked me to send photos of the job and gave me an accurate estimate via email. He came out to get estimates after that. His team arrived on time, and where very careful about protecting my floor. There was some issue and confusion with permits but Glenn was amazing. Times like this are want might turn into something bad, but not with Acton Woodwork's. Glenn was at my home first thing Monday and assured me whatever was needed would be done. No hassle. Everything worked out wonderfully. While we all prefer all things to go perfectly, we really don't know what will happen when their are hiccups with who we hire. It is of great comfort to know when you hire Acton Woodworks you are hiring professions that fully stand behind their work. Hiccups fixed and the bill wasn't sent until everything was done up to high standards.

The job went very well. Acton Woodworks presented several alternative designs and worked with us to try to keep things within our budget. They were very easy to work with and always responsive. The workmen were friendly. They cleaned up and left the project orderly at the end of the day. When we were dissatisfied with one of the vendors, Acton Woodworks intervened and protected our interests to insure that we were 100% satisfied. We were very pleased with the quality of the final project and many visitors to our home have asked us: "who did your work?"

After interviewing six firms, I chose Acton Woodworks to update our out of date and poorly functioning kitchen. Five of the chosen firms gave perfunctory presentations, just replacing our current cabinets and layout with new ones, showing no creativity at all. When I initially talked with all the firms I emphasized that they should use their imagination and think creatively. Only one firm demonstrated that the designer had put time and effort into the new kitchen design -- Acton Woodworks. They are a design/build firm and the same person, Glenn Berger is the designer as well as the contractor on the job and that really appealed to me. Glenn came up with a fantastic design and actually took the time to create a virtual model of the kitchen on his computer. We began working on the design with Glenn in August 2013. He was flexible and easy to work with, listening and seriously considering our ideas as well as his. We completed the design phase in October 2013. Because my husband and I were not available until March, Glenn began demolition and construction the end of March. His lead carpenter and project manager, Dave, was fantastic. He is a perfectionist and that was just fine with me. He patiently answered all our questions as well as paid close attention to all details of the renovation. Glenn uses the same plumber and electrician on all jobs. Unfortunately, the electrician's work was not as precise as I would have wanted and he had to return a number of times to either correct problems or install additional items. He also broke a wall sconce and my husband had a difficult time getting it replaced as the original company is no longer in business. The construction sailed along right on schedule and everything looked great, so I was very optimistic that the project would be completed by July 2014. Then problems started to appear. Some of the cabinets did not match an existing cabinet and righting that problem took until October 2014. There were several other problems, i.e. the transformer for our track lighting was faulty and had to be replaced but the replacement unit was on a slow boat from China and was not installed until October 2014 as well. The kitchen was completed today, October 13, 2014. Despite the multiple delays and problems, the end product, our kitchen is magnificent. When friends come to see it their jaws drop open in amazement. It is a joy to work in such a beautiful environment. The extra time and expense that it took was worth our patience. I would definitely work with Glenn Berger, Dave, the office staff and others again.
Description of Work: The provider designed and built a completely new kitchen for us.

My calls were returned promptly and a visit was easily arranged.
Description of Work: Requested an estimate for remodeling a bathtub for easier access. I really enjoyed talking with Glenn. He had excellent ideas and knows a lot about construction. He came up with some alternate plans to address our situation I had not thought of but which were very worthwhile. We have not yet decided whether or not to do this project, as the price quoted was beyond what we had hoped.

I have uniformly found Acton Woodworks to be on the job when they say the will be. They clean up every day before leaving. They communicate when problems come up. The quality of the work is extraordinary and their commitment to fixing issues is extraordinary. One example is that after one of the house remodels they did we had a persistent leak in one of the bedrooms. They kept coming out until the problem was resolved (5 or 6 trips). I will use them until I leave the area.
Description of Work: I have worked with Acton Woodworks for over 30 years now. They have done (and this list isn't complete): 1. Two major housing remodeling. 2. A new garage with apartment. 3. A garage remodeling. 4. Bathroom remodeling. In addition to a whole lot of smaller stuff.
We first met with Glenn in March of 2011, and after discussing our thoughts regarding our current kitchen/mudroom layout, he immediately started to brainstorm. We subsequently met with several other kitchen designers/builders, and we quickly realized that Glenn had a unique ability to design and visualize the new space long before any demo work occurred. His enthusiasm was surely appreciated, and we eventually signed the necessary paperwork and made a deposit after approving the proposal and the estimate. Evaluating the estimate for a project of this scale was a bit daunting, since unlike a painting job, their is no practical way to get other design/build firms to supply bids on such an involved plan. Ultimately we took the plunge based on Glenn's abilities, his professional and direct manner, and the fact that we liked dealing with a business that would be able to do the design and construction work. At no time did we feel engaging the services of an architect to be necessary; Glenn believes that interior design and function are the highest priority, but he also considers exterior appearance issues needed to pull the whole "package" together. We certainly did not agree on all ideas, but I think we worked well together to come up with a great result. With over 20 years of experience, Glenn has some very strong convictions regarding kitchen/bathroom design and function. Fortunately, he is also very open to the ideas and concerns of his clients. On occasion during the design process, we would disagree on some matter. I think we prevailed when we felt strongly, but on other issues, we felt less sure of our choices and did go with Glenn's ideas. It has been my impression that Glenn places great importance on customer satisfaction, and I suspect that Glenn's experience has taught him that a desired result cannot be achieved without challenging clients' own plans and preferences. Overall, the project was a great success, but due to its size, a number of hurdles needed to be cleared. I had the fortune of being home during this project, and as such, I was able to ask lots of questions and make many on-the-spot decisions. This time also allowed me manage our share of the project responsibilities. The good rapport we established during the design phase helped facilitate direct, efficient communication, and Glenn's office assistant was always reachable and responsive. I highly recommend Acton Woodworks!
Description of Work: After an initial brainstorming session with Glenn in March of 2011, we received the first formal kitchen remodeling proposal about six weeks later. During this six week window, Glenn visited several times to check which walls were load-bearing, and several holes were made to verify the position of beams and other hidden structural elements. After a couple of months of weekly meetings needed to fine tune the plan, and to finalize cabinetry, countertop and appliance choices and orders, Glenn's crew broke ground about the fall of 2011. A covered exterior porch was removed, the footings for a mudroom bump-out were dug and poured, and framing this new space followed. After this bump-out was mostly complete and sealed off from the elements, the old exterior wall was removed, and the kitchen cabinets, counters, a previously exterior and several interior walls were removed. Plastic barriers were placed inside around the work zone to minimize heat loss and dust migration to the untouched areas of the first floor. Fortunately Glenn and his crew were very responsive and thoughtful with regards to a temporary kitchen solution. We also started talking to Glenn about a master bathroom renovation upstairs. Over the next month, the plumbing (gas and water) and electrical work was completed. Special consideration was made for moving the plumbing lines previously located in the now removed interior walls, and with the open walls, plumbing work needed for the second floor bathroom project was also completed. As unanticipated issues arose, Glenn was always available to discuss design modifications and additions. After installing blue board, a subcontractor came for a week to apply the skim coat of plaster to all new surfaces, and with the subsequent delivery of cabinetry and appliances, the space started to take shape. As the kitchen work slowed somewhat, the demo work in the bathroom commenced with the removal of an old tub and the vanity. The floor tile was patched, a wall and doorway were modified, and a new ventilation fan/light were roughed-in. By late March of 2012, the work was nearly completed and with the final delivery of some lighting supplies, the project was completed and final inspections occurred.
