Response from Mike Tilton Quality Plumbing & Heating
UPDATE: I have tried to reach this customer for an apology and to resolve the problem and did not get a return call. We have done work for this customer a couple times in the past, with no issues. My issue with this F grade is that we weren't allowed to correct the mistake. I will be the first to admit we are not perfect. We do make mistakes, and we try to minimize them. In this case, we went to repair an issue that we don't deal with, discovered that was the case, and informed the owner we'd call back in the morning. The employee was new and forgot to tell me this the next morning. But to me, a call from the customer after that morning passed reminding us that an employee had informed him he was supposed to receive a phone call would have been the thing to do. We would have immediately resolved the situation to the customers satisfaction. Instead the customer decided to wait two weeks, saying nothing, and then post a bad review in an attempt to hurt the business. Also, there was no charge to him for the call, we were there when we said were going to be, but the customer posted F's all around. Doesn't seem right. I hope it's concluded by potential customers who read this that while we did make a mistake, this review is far more damaging to our reputation than we deserved. Thankfully we have 50+ positive reviews on the site for customers to see and know that we are indeed a fair and able company, though not perfect. INITIAL RESPONSE: I sincerely apologize for this issue. I remember your call and I'm not sure where the miscommunication occurred but we do not work on field lines. That work requires a septic company. I think what happened was my new employee was sent out there and told you that I would call you back but never informed me of this. I will contact you and help you get you in touch with a septic company who can help you. I will personally be sure to follow up on this and see that it is handled. I will also be sure to fix this with the employee so it doesn't happen again.

Description of Work: After telling the plumber my budget would not allow for certain items to be done and telling him I could not afford above the set price to unclog my drain, he proceeded to come back the next day after spend the 1st day looking for the clean out which I told him I did not have and all previous plumbers had gone on the roof to flush it out, he said they did not go onto roofs, although they did exactly that the very next day, I got charged many labor hours and argued with the company about the charges. I believe they over charge and do not listen to the wishes of thier customers. I told them before they started I couldn't afford much but they kept trying to "up-sell" me and then did the work anyway, to my displeasure. I was sent a bull for work I did not approve. I won't rely on angies list for future business dealings.

Response from Mike Tilton Quality Plumbing & Heating
This job is one that did not go well for the customer and I do understand the frustration, however the frustration is terribly misplaced. We did go to the house because of the sewer stoppage. The customer did inform us that the previous plumbers got on the roof but we do not like to get onto roofs unless we have to due to the dangers involved. Keep in mind the men have to drag over 100 lbs of equipment onto the roof then steady this equipment as it powers through clogs in the drain line, all while balancing themselves on old roofing shingles. I won’t apologize for trying to avoid that situation. The plumber found the line in the ground and cabled it only to find that it was broken going under the house (we would’ve found the same thing from the roof). At this point we needed to dig up and replace the section of line that had collapsed. The customer stated other companies cabled it and had no trouble and we tried to explain that was because the line was not broken at that time, and they were able to cable it and leave. She did not want to hear this, she only wanted to hear that the cost would be the same as a typical sewer cabling, which was impossible at this point. I was told she could not afford the repairs but (and this is important!) I cannot leave a job with sewer backing up into the house, yard, and the neighbors yard, because it goes against the integrity of any decent plumbing company due to the fact it is dangerous to the health of the owner and the public. I told her I would work with her however I could but could not leave sewer pouring onto her and others property. Technically, I could’ve informed the city and they would have come to the job and given her a short time frame to get the broken sewer line fixed or they would take her water meter. That’s how serious leaving a sewer leak is, it’s dangerous. Just because a customer doesn’t want to pay what it takes doesn’t mean it should be left to pour on the ground. As a homeowner its your responsibility to take care of these things, and that’s the truth. I did not mention calling the city to the customer, however, because it can come across as a threat and that’s not what we’re about. Instead I took the time to convince her it was going to have to be fixed because it was the right thing to do and after long conversation she agreed and even signed all the paperwork approving the work, and the satisfactory completion of the work agreed upon once we were finished. I also put her on a payment plan to help out. Again, she agreed. Now to the parts of the review that are untrue. The customer states we tried to upsell her. This is completely false as there was nothing to sell. At all. The job was a collapsed line that had to be repiped. Period. The statement “I was sent a bill for work I did not approve” is also untrue as she signed the paperwork for all of it and the payment plan that was worked out. This job was done last March and we still haven’t been paid, and I think our collection efforts made the customer mad and resulted in this review a year later. The stance that we did anything unfair can also be disputed by the fact this jobs total cost when figured full price was $2,000, but notice the amount she paid was $1,000. I took $1,000 off the bill AND put her on a payment plan to help out. I took losses here and allowed it to be paid at a later date. That’s everything I can do and really is far more than I should have done but I genuinely wanted to help out. It just irks me a homeowner has sewer leaking everywhere due to a broken and bad line, and when its not ‘easy and cheap’ to fix, the plumbing company gets the blame. Its maddening really. I took a loss to make sure this job was done and done right, and that effort benefited the customer entirely, and there’s no two ways about it. I will say this customer was never mean or rude, and that’s why I tried so hard to help, but this review is misleading and unfair and I hope I have made that clear. I will ask that customers please look back on the many, many positive reviews on this site. We are a very reputable company with thousands of satisfied customers and I proudly stand by everything that we do. Mike Tilton, Owner

Description of Work: I noticed that I didn't have any hot water so I checked the tank, which is in my attic. It was sitting in 3 inches of water. I called them about 8:00 AM and they had someone out here by 10:30 AM. They determined that the tank had split opened and needed to be replaced. The removed the old one and brought a new one out and had it installed within 5 hours.....remember it is up in my attic and to get there they had to climb the old pull down ladder in my garage. They did a great job and I had hot water before the kids got home from school.

After talking to Johnny, one of MIkes plumbers, he told me they re-plumb these old houses all the time. So I had them return the next morning and re-plumb the entire house and place a water filter where the water main comes up to the house. They did a fantastic job and I no longer taste Cross Lake in my tap water! They did the job in one day and the craftsmanship is impressive. Mike's crews take pride in the work they do and it is obvious.
Description of Work: Have a old highland home. I found a small leak in the PVC plumbing in the crawl space. I tried to fix it, Huge mistake. I split it open and then I had to shut my water down at the street at a 11:00 PM!! The next morning tried to find a plumber, I talked to Mike who had no available crews. However, he sent a crew that afternoon when they got done with another job. They fixed my water line and got the water in my home up and running again. They did a great job and were great to work with.

I called Mike Tilton's Plumbing late one afternoon in late Dec. 2012. The lady I spoke with was very friendly. I explained that the tank on the toilet had been leaking, and that I had turned the water off at the valve behind the toilet. Told her I needed to have it taken care of by the next evening as I had family coming in from out of state. I told her since the line was shut off, it could wait until the next day. She said she would call in the morning to let me know when they would come. The next morning at 8:30 I got a call from her saying they would come between noon and 2 pm. which was fine with me. The plumber called about 1:30 saying he was on his way and that it would be here in about 30 minutes. He arrived at 2:00, so he made it in the time frame the lady had given me. I explained to him the problem and that the water was off. He went right to work, wasting no time. While he was working I asked him to check the flush valve and flapper as it had overflowed once. He checked it out and replaced whatever needed replacing. He completed the work in about 30 minutes. He explained to me what he had done before he left. The work that he did solved the problem. The toilet is working fine now- no leaks I had never called a plumber before so am not aware of what other plumbers charge, but comparing to other repairmen I have had out for other things, the price was comparable. I did use the Angie's List coupon that this company provided on Angie's List. I would call this company again to do work.;

Great! Though Mike is the owner and does not perform the work himself, he cones out and performs a check to see what is needed and gives you an estimate. The estimate was fair and he didn't charge to come out and take a look at what was damaged. Our repair was somewhat complicated because it involved a plumber, carpenter and granite specialist. He coordinated with each department and they were all excellent. They performed high above any expectation and Mike was a phone call away at any time. Mike called after the repairs we completed to see if I was satisfied. I assured him that he had earned our business and referral for life. After being taken advantage of by the building contractor for our home in regard to the sink falling in three times and being patched back together, Mike had to reassure me a lot because it was hard for me to trust another person with this repair. He is above board and I highly recommend his work! Thanks Mike!

I called three companies and chose Tilton's to do the job based on price and availability on the same day. They actually called and were able to come sooner than expected just a couple hours after the initial call. The problem was diagnosed and fixed very quickly. The repairman was very polite and professional. I would rate this an A experience all across the board but I was surprised at being charged for travel 25 minutes across town since I chose them based on hourly rate. Not all companies charge this way and I paid about $45 more than I estimated.
Description of Work: Dual water heater system was not working properly. One of the thermostats needed to be replaced in one of the units. The actual job took about 30-35 minutes. He also tightened up a leaky valve while he was here since it appeared to be leaking. System appears to be working properly now.

When I got home, the faucet was repaired. Other than that, there was no indication that anyone had been in my home. I called Monday and asked them to fax me a bill. I felt that the charge was reasonable for an emergency call on a weekend.
Description of Work: I was getting ready to go to a bridal shower for my son's fiance. After running bath water, the hot water faucet would not turn off. I called Mike Tilton and told him my problem. Very pleasant and professional, from the first phone call (you get a human who can discuss the problem with you--no phone menus, no answering service), through the entire job. The time it all took was appropriate for a hard job, and the consulting they did. The names of the techs were listed on the invoice, along with the charges all broken out properly--for the main person, $90/hour, and for the assistant, $40.00/hour. There were separate twenty-five dollar charges for the K-50 machine and the sewer machine they had to use; I have no idea if this is usual. I've never seen such an itemized bill! The nice young tech asked if I had a coupon to use (these folks give coupons for future work). They left everything clean and neat. I would definitely use these folks again.
Description of Work: Several drains in my house had gotten sluggish, and glugging sounds happened when the washing machine drained. Also, we were noticing the characteristic smell that tells you the main sewer line probably was getting clogged with tree roots again. We called these folks, whom we had used two other times, and they sent the tech and a helper very quickly. They looked at the entire situation (I had several potential trouble spots under the house to show them, where the pipes didn't have the proper angle), then went to work. Evidently I had a bad tree root problem; I could hear them outside grunting, exclaiming, and putting the big drilling rig through some noisy maneuvers. It took quite over an hour just to grind through it all (we have huge trees, and had not done this in a while). Then they snaked out the other drains I pointed out (shower drains full of hair, and kitchen sink.) The tech spotted some improper outflow configuration from the dishwasher hose into the disposal, and zip-tied it up to the proper angle, to avoid more problems. I kept them talking a bit about re-plumbing the parts of our old house that would be needed before we sell it, and they'll give us a quote soon for that.
