I hired Antique Rose Gardens to take out grass, add soil, till and mulch flower beds around my house. They took out the grass, replaced the soil with soil that nearly killed all of the plants I put in, didn't till deep enough even after I called them back a second time, and put in mulch full of clay and weed seeds. I knew they were using bagass (as mulch), but didn't know that it would be scraped off of the groung with all of the clay and grass that was under the pile. I mean clay as big as canteloupes!! In my flower beds! They were in such a hurry that they left my sidewalks a mess, which I scrubbed for 4 hours to get the dirt and black tire marks off. They have trouble with employees and brought a worker to my house that they didn't even know the last name of (found this out later) and this man came to my house that night after they left asking me for money! The other man they had working for them commented repeatedly on the size of my house and made inappropriate remarks to me. They hire whoever they can get without doing any checks on these men and I was furious when I was confronted by the man asking me for money after he had the nerve to come around the back of my house onto my screen porch looking for me! I have had to hire another landscaping company to remove all the plants put in because they were dying. I had the county agent for our area come out and look at my yard. He said the soil they put in had no organic matter in it, only bark and sand, and that is why I was loosing my plants. There was no new growth on the roots after 2 months and all of the leaves were turning yellow. I had to dig up over 30 bushes, find pots and repot all of them. I asked for a portion of my money back and I was hung up on by the owner of the business. My mother also had a similar experience and has had to hire another company to redo all of the work that Antique Rose Gardens did for her. These people have no clue about soil, bed preparation, or how to till. This experience was horrible!!!! It has taken me months to save and have all of my landscaping redone by a reputable landscaping company. I gave them a chance to come out and remedy the situation or give me a refund of part of the costs. I reported them to the Better Business Bureau and was told that since I had already redone the flower beds they could not help me get my money back. Very dissappointing! The company I hired to redo all of this did it for a fourth of the costs that Antique Rose Gardens charged. They sounded like they knew what they were doing. My fault for not checking on the company and getting references. Update:I received the letter in response from Antique Rose Gardens. I was disturbed by the lies he stated in the letter. I was not offered any other dirt than what was delivered, I was not offered any warranty, but I did want the bagass because I had used it in the past. The bagass I had used in the past was also free, but is was clean and free of clay, dirt and weeds. This is a byproduct of the sugarcane industry and has always been free! I did not have them do all of my planting because I am having the exterior of my house painted and intended on having the planting done after the painting so my plants wouldn't be disturbed. I only had him plant the ones I had in pots which I subsequently had to have dug up before I replaced all of the crap they put in.I figured they wouldn't give me any of my money back. I thought at the time they were in financial need because they offered to paint or do any odd jobs that I had. Should have been a red flag for me, my fault.
Description of Work: I hired Antique Rose Gardens to landscape my yard. Remove grass, add good bedding soil, till the hard ground, and add mulch.

Response from Antique Rose Gardens
When I first met with the member, I recommended a complete landscaping job with Bed Builders soil, pine bark mulch, irrigation, plants and a warranty. She declined and told me she wanted me to prepare the beds & use free ground up sugar cane stalks (known as bagass) for mulch. Since the bagass mulch was free she would only pay for the bagass delivery. I told her we would dig out 3-4” of top soil that was full of weeds, treat the soil with chemicals to impede the weeds, till the soil and add Nature’s Best Bed Builders landscaping soil (the best & most expensive soil used by most landscapers in the Lafayette area). She did not want any chemical in her yard. WE dug down to remove top soil with weeds and discovered another layer of weeds also. Her contractor had spread 4” of topsoil over existing weeds without treating the existing weeds. I recommended that we dig down another 3-4” to remove that layer of weeds. She agreed and thanked me for pointing out this layer of weeds. She said most people would not have taken the time to dig down so deep. She said she realized it was a lot of extra work and she would reimburse me for the extra labor and soil to fill the garden beds. I charged her a small amount more plus the extra cost of soil. I charged her as little as possible for the extra work to help keep her cost down. Next we did a light tilling since we already removed 6-8” of topsoil and added 8” of Bed Builders landscaping soil. Some of the areas were tilled by hand since she had underground pipes running through her gardens. Her gardens were enclosed with cement sidewalks with no opening for drainage and she had no gutters on her roof to divert water. That means that every time it rained the gardens not only received direct rain but also any rain that fell of the roof flooded her gardens with no openings for drainage. I told her before we started that she would need gutters. In fact it poured down raining while we were working and the gardens flooded. She said she was in a hurry to get job done since she had already bought a bunch of plants for her gardens and had to water them by hand. To answer her complaints: She contacted the county agent about the quality of soil and mulch used. I followed up with the same agent and his supervisor. She said she was told the soil used is not good. When I spoke with the agents they said the soil is very good, doesn’t see a problem with planting in 8” of Bed Builders and plants should perform will. He said he attended demos where Bed Builders was used. They said it is more porous than heavy top soil and may need to be watered a little more often. She declined irrigation. This soil is used by most landscapers in Lafayette. She complained that the free bagass mulch from the sugar mill was full of clay and weed seed. Sugar mill employees load the dump trucks with front end loaders. I arranged for delivery of this free mulch. I have no control over how it loaded or the quality of the bagass. It’s free. She complained the sidewalks were left dirty. We spread 2 dump trucks of soil and 2 dump trucks of bagass mulch by wheelbarrow to her gardens and had to Passover all her sidewalks to get to the gardens. We also removed all the bad soil from her gardens to low spot in her yard. This was also done by wheelbarrow. Sure there was dirt and tire marks on her sidewalk. She cleaned it herself and didn’t say a work about the dirt marks until after. She complained about employees. I did hire a temporary worker to help push a wheelbarrow. He only worked one day and I had his check for him to pick up. I don’t know why he would go to her house to collect his check. It was had delivered to him the next day. The other worker she talked about has been working with me for 6 years. He is very trustworthy and honest. After the work was finished she mentioned his commenting on the size of her house made her feel uncomfortable. If she would have said something sooner I would have addressed it with him. She had an add-on job to clear up the weeds between her fence and house so she could lay a brick path. Her ground was uneven and I told her we would dig out 2” of soil. We did exactly what she wanted done. She called and said the ground was still uneven and that some of her beds needed to be retiled. I rented a tiller the next day at my own expense and had her show me which gardens needed retilling. The gardens were retiled and I even tilled the area between her house and fence at no extra cost to her. We have been in business since 2001 and have landscaped numerous homes, a church and businesses and have never had a problem. We have a complete portfolio of our landscaping jobs and have very satisfied customers. In fact our clients call us back when extra projects are needed. To recap: she declined a complete landscaping job with warranty, she elected to use free bagass mulch instead of paying for pine bark mulch, she said no chemicals to treat the weeds, she had no gutters, she had no drain openings under her sidewalks, she declined irrigation, she did not want to pay me to plant her shrubs.
