Overall, I feel that Ken Giles (Plumbing Solutions) knew what he was doing. He and his workers are nice and ultimately got the job done. My main complaint is that the services were a little over-priced.
Description of Work: Background: We have a house that was built in the '70's that has the kitchen drain line (a two-inch cast-iron pipe) embedded in the concrete slab, a common building practice at that time. This had become clogged and was causing a sink in the basement to overflow. We had had another plumber come and struggle to unclog the pipe but to no avail. That plumber recommended Ken Giles (Plumbing Solutions) because Ken possessed a "jetter", a snake that uses a high-pressure stream of water to power out the clog. The Good: Ken Giles, the owner, is extremely nice and I felt he knew what he was talking about with regard to the problem. He and his workers took time to explain what they were doing. Even though he had sent two of his employees to do the job, he stopped by to make sure everything was going okay and in fact stayed until the job was done. David, one of the other two employees who showed up, was also nice and did a good job of keeping me updated about what he was doing and explaining what was going on. The other employee was just a little more shy, but still was nice enough and seemed competent. After the line was unclogged, Ken explained patiently to me what might need to be done in the future in the way of re-routing the kitchen drain line to keep this kind of clog from happening again, or at least, make the line more accessible if it does. He had no future money to be gained from taking the time to explain this to me, considering he was recommended to me by another plumber who did not have the right kind of equipment for tackling this clog and who he said would be more than capable of doing the re-routing if I decided to do it later. The "Not-so-good": I felt the price was a little high for what was being done. Three-hundred dollars was charged for use of the high-pressure "jetter" that unfortunately could not be used to unclog the clogged drain line because the cable was too stiff and the angle of the pipes too sharp for it to "make the turn" to get into the clogged pipe. This was not their fault, but still, that particular machine ultimately could not be used to help solve the problem. They did try to run the jetter from the other end of the clogged drain line, but again it couldn't, because of the angle of the pipes, be used. They decided to run the jetter from the clean-out toward the yard to get any gunk out of the main line that might cause me a problem in the future. There's no way to say if that will in fact help in the future, but I do feel Ken Giles was genuine in his offer to do that and believed it might help with other potential problems. I think there probably was some value gained from use of the jetter from a preventative standpoint, but because it didn't actually help with the problem they came to solve (the clogged drain line) they could have charged me less for use of the machine. They charged me $167 to use a motorized snake on the line. Don't get me wrong...this DID solve the problem, but it seems a little expensive considering they did not have to struggle to "work the snake" manually back and forth to get through the clog but instead it was just a simple matter of guiding the snake while the motor did the work. I will say this though, they did make the attempt with two different snakes, a smaller motorized one first, followed by a larger one with a spade bit that ultimately did the job. The $167 cost, however, was what was quoted up front for snaking the line and is what they were going to charge regardless of the effort involved. Just a neutral observation: I had to suggest at several points what it was I felt like needed to be done next. For example, I had to suggest we try the jetter from the other end of the clogged line. Remember, from above, that this was to no avail because of the angles involved, but still it would have been nice if they had suggested it. Similarily, I had to ask them, after the line was unclogged to run the snake back and forth a few times to make sure it was cleaned out good. Again, it would have been nice if they had thought of that. On the other side of things though, they listened to what I suggested and were willing without any hesitancy to do it. I appreciated that.
