I really appreciate reliability as much as a fair price. They showed up when they said they would, completed the job in about 5 days, cleaned up after themselves, did quality work and came in on budget. No surprises!! We are very pleased and will definitely use them for any future remodels.
Description of Work: We had a structural defect that required the installation of extra support beams in our cathederal ceiling to support our wall of windows and roof. They analized the problem, worked with us to find the best solution to fix it, at a price that was affordable. Some of our windows needed to be replaced to make room for the support beams. They did the support beams, replaced the windows and completed all the finish work to restore the wall back to its former state.

I began looking for a general contractor to repair a sagging sub-floor and replace some rotting exterior trim in late March, 2012. I began by contacting Vincent Abell Contracting. Brad Abell came out within a few days of our phone call and provided a quote within approximately 10 working days. Wanting to compare competitive quotes, I then reached out to two other well-regarded contractors on Angie's list. While the next contractor was quick to respond with a site visit, it took multiple follow up calls to get an actual quote. I ended up with a quote for half the necessary repairs 5 weeks later at a cost of $1,000 more than Brad's quote for all repairs needed. With two quotes in hand with such a huge disparity in cost, I decided to reach out to a third contractor. These guys came out within a day or two...and then NEVER provided a quote, even after multiple calls on my part over a six-week period. Around early July, I decided to stop trying to get an apples-to-apples comparison and just decided to move forward with Brad w/ VAC. It was the right decision even if I wasted almost three months trying to collect other quotes. It did take several months to pin Brad down on a time to begin the work needed, but that was understandable given that he had already committed to several other lengthy jobs. I can say with 100% certainty, it was worth the wait. Vincent himself and two other gentlemen began work on my subfloor in October, which only took two days. In all, the crew replaced roughly half of the subfloor in my living room and reinforced one of the floor joists. They took great care to hang a plastic sheet over the two large entrances into the room overnight so that dust, critters from the crawl space, etc. didn't venture into the rest of the house. Vincent explained the work he and his team were doing and why it was necessary. I never got the impression he was trying to cut any corners or was in a huge hurry to be finished. When the job was complete, I received an invoice for the amount quoted in the original proposal. Brad and I agreed the second half of the job -- the exterior trim work -- could wait several weeks and work began on it between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Two gentlemen came out to tear out and replace 5-6 areas of rotting wood. One place was so bad, in fact, that additional structural repairs were necessary. They were able to make these repairs -- which I witnessed before and after -- at a very reasonable additional charge given that this work was not part of the scope of the original quote. The work was complete in approximately a day and a half. A few days later, while tearing out some carpeting, my wife and I noticed water stains under a bay window in our dining room. We then examined the trim on the outside of the bay window, which is typically hidden behind several large hedges. There were an additional 4-5 spots that were in dire need of trim replacement. I was very pleased that, upon appealing to Brad to send the same guys out again to make the repairs, he was more than willing to make the additional repairs even though I had already confirmed all the necessary work had been completed. Brad acted in "good faith" and I think that kind of integrity goes a long way in the contracting field. There's a strong possibility we'll be either repairing or replacing our deck in 2013. I will NOT be seeking out bids on this job. After this most recent work, I trust Brad and Vincent. I think I'll just stick with these guys.
Description of Work: -VAC replaced roughly half of the subfloor in my living room and reinforced one of the floor joists that was contributing to some sagging -VAC replaced roughly 10 areas of exterior trim that were rotting and, in the process, also repaired some structural damage caused by water getting in behind the trim

Excellent. They showed up on time and did a great job. The sub-contractors that V. Abell had do the various tasks were professional, friendly and you didn't feel like you had to guard the possessions in your home while they were there. They were respectful and courteous. Good level of communication ..... Brad Abell let you know what sub-contractors would be showing up the next day know what time they would be there.... and they were.
Description of Work: We had a 2nd floor bathroom that was very outdated and in need of a complete remodel. We wanted to completely 'gut' the existing... remove the tub, toilet, vanity/sink, tile, drywall fixtures and plumbing.... and replace it with new (we did the painting). We hired Vincent Abell Contracting to do job. We did the picking-out of the style/color/type that what we wanted (tub, toilet, vanity/sink, tile, fixtures, lights etc) and they were responsible for gutting and removing what was there, and then installing the new. :

Brad Abell came out to hear our story and give us an estimate. Brad was very open and honest about what could be and what could not be done. He was also very good with setting expectations on timing the completion. We were very impressed with the teams performing the work. We had nothing but a great experience with each. They were polite, gave a lot of attention to detail and cleaned up after themselves. Brad personally supervised the work and made sure the end result was high quality. Vincent and Brad actually fabricated an exhaust flow system for the new down draft that they installed in our new granite island. The end result was fantastic. We highly recommend Vincent Abell contracting to anyone planning a renovation or just needs an excellent contractor.
Description of Work: Complete kitchen renovation which included an adjoining family room. Brad Abell's team handled demolition, electrical, plumbing, painting, installation, flooring, you name it, they did it.

This is a local, family-owned business, that is excellent to work with -- very friendly and polite. Their craftsmanship is top-notch, and, just as important, they are people that you can really trust. I felt comfortable leaving my house to go to the office all day, while they were in my home working. This is a wonderful company that I would highly recommend to everyone.

Abell was awesome from the very first contact. Very professional. Everyone who worked on my home was top notch. They showed up when they said they would and everyone was very skilled, extremely polite and did high quality work. They also cleaned up so well I never had to do a thing. Whenever I had a question or needed something, Brad Abell always responded quickly and with great knowledge about what was needed. My new front porch looks awesome and my new backporch ceiling, molding and new outside boards are, too. Before I even called a contractor I cross-referenced Angie's List to the BBB and Vincent Abell Contracting was at the top of the list. I would use them again and again and highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Abell Contracting updated my back porch and removed/rebuilt my front porch with a new foundation, brick and columns. Along the way they fixed a large area on my roofline, re-bricked an old cat-door, repaired/replaced water damaged boards and painted areas where I could not get to.

Initial quote was very competitive. Estimate to start work ~ 1 month later. There was a delay, but it was due to Lowe's having a backorder on the moisture shield composite deck railings that matched our decking. That was the only hiccup with the whole process and was not in Abell's control. They kept us informed throughout the process. The crew did a 1st class job on the deck construction. It was built on 12" centers to make sure that the composite decking does not bow. Additionally, they took extra care to make sure that the gaps were perfect and boards were straight (this is very difficult with the hidden fasteners). They installed skirting around the entire deck and it looks fantastic. Any issues that we pointed out, were quickly addressed. After construction was complete, I had a few screws that must have been bad. One of the skirt boards was loose. They came back our and fixed it without any problem. They stand behind their work and build it the way they would want it built for their house. I can tell you that the deck that I have is far more than the deck that I had them quote. The fit and finish details exceeded my expectations...and I am very picky.

We had four estimates on this remodel. Vincent Abell Contrating was not the least or most expensive estimate. However, they were the only contractor that provided us with an estimate that met all the Contract's 101 specifications outline in Angies List magazine of May 2012. Bard Abell was the project manager from start to finish. He met all our needs, checked on his people regularly and constantly kept us informed of progress, appointment times and workers. Workers showed up when they were supposed, did their work, cleaned up and let us know exactly what they were doing. We are extremely satisfied, had no problems and felt that this was one of the best experiences we had using a contractor. We will use them in the future for other work.
Description of Work: Total shower and water closet remodel. Complete new tile shower and water closet w/frameless glass door. New exhaust fan, recessed light and switches.upgraded to fan w/night light. upgraded shower fixtures to a handheld with diverter valve and rain-shower head. Additional eplacement of 4 faucets.

We were so pleased with the bathroom remodel last year that we had them redo our kitchen. We didn't even bother getting a competing quote. Quality, trust, and respect and responsiveness trumped everything else so we weren't going to take a chance hiring someone else and have those attributes be an unknown. Brad, Vincent's son and project manager, as before, stayed on top of things. He is the 'face' of the company and really understands consumer needs and customer service. He responds promptly to all communications, shows up almost every day and makes sure all components get done. As before, all of their workers understand and respected our property. Every single day they cleaned up as much as possible and left no messes. It really made a relatively major construction job less stressful. One of the things we really like about the company is that they will not ask for nor accept final payment (a significant amount) until the entire punch list is done and we are satisfied. They will continue to be our 'go to' company for our remodeling needs.
Description of Work: Last year we contracted with them to demolish and completely remodel a bathroom. This year we remodeled our kitchen including new cabinets, appliances, counters, and lighting. Pretty much everything except walls and floors.

Wanted some custom cabinetry and reconfiguration of some existing closet space in a guest bedroom. Brad Abell responded to my request over Angie's List in a timely fashion. Told Brad that I was under an Aug. 1 deadline and at first he was uncertain that he could do that with such short notice. he recehceked his schedule and was able to fit me in and proceeded to do the work over the course of approximately one week. Kept in touch the whole time either personally or through his subs. Am very happy with the work which was done as I had described. Was very pleased with the overall experience.

aying for The job, through no fault of Abell's, ended up taking far longer than anticipated. We had planned to do the heavy work over the winter, after the ground froze, to keep the tracked skid loader from tearing up the lawn too badly. Unfortunately, it never froze -- it was one of the warmest winters on record! So, giving up on Mother Nature, the work was done in June of this year. Abells built the reinforced walls, and was able to dump some broken concrete footings and foundations from another job, saving us some expense of fill gravel. Then, they subcontracted the gravel fill and topsoil layer to Don Parr, who turned out to be a genuine artist with a Bobcat; I believe that Don could make that Bobcat do the moonwalk if he wanted to. As with every single other contract we've had with Abells, I am completely satisfied with work, and the cost. Abell's will be the only contractor that I'll use. ANd if your estimate from them isn't the lowest, please remember that you are also paying for such intangibles as courtesy and worksite safety and cleanliness. Abell's attention to such detail is a hallmark of their complete professionalism.
Description of Work: Our house is on a ridge line, with an in-ground pool. When the pool was installed about thirty-six years ago, the builder skimped on the amount of earth placed on the downhill side. Over time, the pool has started to bow out on the downhill side, with the top of the wall deflected about five inches from the vertical, enough to be quite noticeable and to cause the concrete-exposed aggregate sidewalk and apron to crack. I decided to put in two retaining walls, one tiered below the other to try to arrest the seemingly-inevitable slide down the slope. I started to do the work myself, but my middle-aged body (despite my late youth mind) quickly convinced me of the folly of THAT idea. I called Brad Abell, who is the field manager and supervisor for Vincent Abell Contracting. They've done several jobs for us in the past, from small to very large, and I've always found them to be exceptional in quality of work, professionalism, and price. Brad came out, and we looked at the site, and determined where the walls should go, and how to fill them with gravel and a top layer of clean soil. He was nice enough not to comment on my solo attempts, which would need to be removed.

Vince and his crew did a fantastic job. We had a lot of work done in order to change our existing first-floor plan. Our house is a traditional two-story. The first floor had a wall separating the formal and informal living rooms, and another separating the kitchen from the dinning room, with a small laundry closet in the middle. Our idea was to open the floor plan by removing these walls, and moving the laundry room into the basement. After several consultations and estimates, we gave the job to Vince. Not being from Louisville, it was important to us to have a company with a good reputation, since the job required several trades (plumbing, electric, duct work, etc.). Abell certainly lived up to that reputation. Each of the trades that Vince used did an excellent job. His crew was also prompt, professional, and did great work. As with any major renovations, there were a handful of unforseen issues that arose during the course of the work, but Vince provided good solutions, and kept the cost of the project within the original estimate. We have some other jobs coming up in the near future, and I plan on using Abell.
Description of Work: Demolish two load-bearing walls in our living room, and dinning room, and install two structural beams in their place Install additional duct work Finish drywall on the ceiling and walls Install crown moulding, and baseboards throughout the first floor Moving laundry room from first floor to basement General electric and plumbing work

The price they quoted was $ 11000 and they stuck to that. I had another quote for the same work and it was $ 15000. I am quite happy with the results. They came in and did the work. They took a few days but they did a great job. They cleaned up the debris. They did the job for $ 11000 and I was quiet happy. They were out there when they said they would be. They were pretty professional about everything. I would recommend them. I would use them again in the future.

Process went well except for the problem of the boulder, which we did not know existed until construction started. It took Mr. Abell a whole day to remove the boulder, I suggested changing the dimensions of the deck to avoid having to remove the boulder yet Mr. Abell was persistant and successful in getting the huge rock out of the ground! The company provided me with a comprehensive estimate of the job which included a list of all supplies and described process. Company submitted drawings to obtain permit. Vincent Abell Contracting showed up when they said they would, kept premises as clean as possible during the construction process. I love my new deck, it is solid, well built, attractive, and even has a low cross bar on the railing so my small pets won't fall off the deck. I know I will enjoy it for years, I am VERY HAPPY with the work performed.
Description of Work: Vincent Abell Contracting was hired to build a deck off my second floor, this construction included an 8' by 10' wood deck with railing, placed on concrete anchored posts, and installing a door (provided by me, homeowner) to the deck where a window had previously been. The job also included removing siding and replacing it; and removing a huge boulder (about 28" x 19") that was underground where a post needed to be placed. Mr. Abell also had to trim a few branches off a tree and bush to make clearance for the deck.

Brad provided an estimate which was a good price for the work needed to be done. This was a custom remodel. Vincent showed up and did the measuring and framing. The plumbing and electrical crew were very professional and did quality work. The area was always cleaned up at the end of the day. Brad coordinated with me on completion times so I could do my job of painting before the appliances and shelving were installed. I would have them do another remodel in my house.
Description of Work: This remodel was converting an upstairs hallway between two bedrooms that was dead end. It included putting up a wall and making an opening into one room for an additional closet and then putting in the necessary plumbing and electrical for a laundry. Since I live in a two story house and the W/D were in the basement, putting the W/D hookup upstairs with the bedrooms has been a create convenience and time saver. The project including putting up a wall, framing the new door and installation, mudding the sheet rock, pulling new plumbing from the basement to the upstairs and pulling electrical for a complete W/D hook up. The plumbing also included a drain pan as well.

Everything went very smoothly. Brad Abell, the Project Manager, came out to look at our basement and discuss what we wanted done. We provided a layout showing the walls we wanted removed as well as a a detailed electrical plan that showed the new outlets and lights we wanted. Brad was the only contractor we talked to that took pictures during his visit and presented us with a written quote. Each sub-contractor that came out was very professional and took a lot of pride in their work. The crew hanging the drywall was the only group that didn't clean up very well after they were finished. Brad did offer to clean the spots on our carpet after all the work was completed. We ran into an unexpected issue with a crawl space which wasn't in the original quote. Brad helped us find someone to fix the problem and was very fair when it came to adjusting the final cost. He came to our home often to check on the job and was always available by either phone or e-mail.

They were very prompt. When they said they were going to come and give me an estimate, they arrived on time. They told me that because of their work they might not be able to get to it for a week or two. However, they called me later that day and said that they could have somebody here the next day and they did. They did not do a big job but I felt that their estimate was fair. From the beginning, Brad Vincent was professional, courteous and prompt. He showed up or called when he said he would and kept in contact with me during the whole process. The workmen were clean and tidied up after each day's work. They were professional and friendly. I am very pleased with the quality of services for the job completed as well as the customer service aspect.

We've lived in our home for a little over one year and our original Carriage House was condemned by the City. After demolition, we evaluated four contractors to bid on the new construction project. We were very particular in what we wanted, as well as what Landmarks would allow. We also have a grade change of approximately 4 ft between the back yard and alley which was "pushing" the old building over, so a quality foundation was a paramount concern in building the new garage. (The foundation of the original Carriage House also had been replaced with concrete block and ground water ran through it like a river when it rained.). During the bid process, Brad Abell from Abell Contracting was the only vendor that actually listened to what I wanted and provided an exact estimate to my spec. Their price seemed fair and I felt confident that they would deliver to my satisfaction. I'm very happy to say that the original bid matched the final cost. Through the entire construction process, the job site was kept clean, orderly and safe. I work from home, so I was able to watch most of the construction process and check in with the workers. Each of the individuals that worked on our project took care and created a quality product that I expect will stand beside our 107 year old home for the next 100 years. We are extremely pleased with the new garage and it fits in perfectly with the house and neighborhood. Although new construction, it pays homage to the original Carriage House, while being a modern garage. Vincent Abell Contracting was a pleasure to work with and I would highly recommend them.
Description of Work: We live in a Landmarks Preservation District with strict oversight and community involvement. We selected Abell contracting to build our new detached 3 car garage at the rear of our property and it turned out GREAT! They were recommended to us by two of our neighbors who had structural work perfomed by Vincent Abell in the past. The new garage dimension is 36'w x 24'd x 13'h and covered in Hardi-Plank siding. The construction is poured concrete footers, floor and wall to grade with wood frame construction above grade.

Working with Abell Contracting was great from the start. I had most contact with Brad Abell, who was courteous, prompt and professional. When he came for the estimate, he came prepared and was punctual. I told him what I was wanting with the basement room and he prepared the first estimate. When I decided to hire Abell Contracting, I told Brad that I would like to see what changes could be made to the estimate to bring it to a cost that I was looking for. I decided to paint the room and to modify my original request for waterproofing the exterior wall. I eliminated the requirements to put plastic sheeting over the waterproof-painted wall. I wasn't sure what kind of flooring I wanted for the room since I had had some minor flooding. Brad suggested an Armstrong product which has the look of wood but is all vinyl so it is more water-resistent than carpet but cheaper than tile. It was a good suggestion because it really tops off the look of the room. Abell's men showed up when they said they would, cleaned up after themselves, and did what they said they would do. I couldn't have asked for better service. And, the room looks fabulous. It's a playroom for my granddaughters and now they have a well lit, room where they can spread out their toys and as they grow, the room can accommodate teenagers!!! I couldn't be happier with a contractor and will definitely use Abell Contracting for future remodeling jobs. And, I will have no problem recommending them to my friends and family. The company is top-notch!!!!!
Description of Work: Abell Contracting demolished old panelling, studs, electrical wiring, ceiling and carpet remnants. They extended 2 walls - 1 wall by about 4 feet and the other by about 2 feet. They painted the exterior cement walls with an oil-based waterproofing paint to reduce the risk of moisture to the new drywall. The smell was pretty bad so they brought in a large fan to circulate the fumes to the outside. Once the paint dried, they installed new, pressure-treated studs and plates to replace the old ones which were not treated and had some mold on them from previous flooding. They installed new drywall on the walls and ceiling to include enclosing ductwork with new drywall. The basement room previously had a single flourescent light fixture and 2 canister lights. I decided to put in 9 new canister lights in the ceiling. In order to accomodate the new lighting the electrician had to install a new box. He also installed new outlets on all walls and 3 new switches so that the canister lights could be turned on in groups. Once the drywall was installed and the electrical wiring installed, I painted the ceiling and walls. The electrician finished putting plates on the new switches and outlets and put the finishing touches on the canister lights. Then new flooring was put in - Abell Contracting suggested vinyl planks from Armstrong, which gives the look of wood but the durability of vinyl. the really good thing about the new flooring is that it will withstand minor flooding should that happen in the basement. It is a floating floor system so not glue was used. Abell Contracting replaced a bi-fold door for the closet with a 6-panel door and installed the hardware for the door. As an added bonus, the worker did something to 2 other doors that allowed them to close without sticking or dragging the floor (that was great!!!).
