lI have a 1920's one-and-a-half story bungalow that needed a new back deck, the front porch rebuilt, the back of the house jacked up, and the crawl space enclosed. Brad Abell came to look over the work and to give me an estimate. He was knowledgeable and professional. He thought that only the concrete top of the porch would need to be replaced, along with the porch roof supports and a railing added. As it turned out, the porch foundation also needed to be replaced. Brad found some concrete blocks that are very similar to the blocks of the house foundation, as well as some posts that suited the age and style of the house. He also came up with the idea for the low wall that acts as a railing around the porch, which was allowed because that is what the houses around me have. The result is a new facade for the house that is correct for its age and style. Chris and crew did an excellent job building the back deck. Vincent and his helper cleaned out (a very unpleasant job) and enclosed the crawl space, as well as jacking up the back of the house a few inches. As with any old house, unforeseen problems arose. This company was able to come up with solutions that gave the results I was looking for and stayed fairly close to budget. The end result of all this work and a new paint job is that my house looks great! I have gotten many compliments on it, including from my city housing inspector. I will definitely be calling Vincent Abell Contracting to do interior work on my house.
Description of Work: Tore down and replaced back deck, tore down and replaced front porch, jacked up the back of house, cleaned out and enclosed the crawl space

This is a family business and they were friendly and communicated frequently. I provided a drawing and explained what I wanted. Brad and Vincent Abel were able to explain the project in detail before beginning. They showed and explained parts of the existing house that would be removed/affected; how they would proceed to constructing the roof and ceiling first, masonry second--including rebuilding a sagging kneewall; electrical, and painting. It was their suggestion to paint everything facing the street, so it would match. Each person that came to our house was respectful, kept the area clean daily, and completed amazing work. The mason was remarkably able to repair and rebuild the brick such that many passersby cannot tell there was any work done. This can be said of the entire project. Our neighbors remark how the addition to our roof and the porch looks as though it was part of the original house. New friends cannot believe we had any work done because everything fits/matches the existing architecture so well.
Description of Work: Built an addition to our front porch, matching the design and architecture of our 90+ yr old house. I had made a drawing of what I wanted the porch to and roof line to look like. They were able to make it happen. The project included deconstructing the existing brick kneewall, rebuilding it, adding a brick pillar matching the existing pillars, electric lights installed, extending the roof, matching the red mortar and the existing shingles, painting, etc.

It was a good experience. We had problems with people calling us back, and they were about the only ones that did that, although they were much higher than everybody else. The work turned out pretty good. Somethings that we found that we didn't like, they came and fixed those for the most part. For the money that we spent, there were a few things that I thought could be better. The interactions with them was great.
Description of Work: They did some remodelingfor us. We remodeled the kitchen and bathroom. It was a total remodel.

I had a totally positive experience, it couldn't be better. They did a fabulous job, and the people that worked for him did a fabulous job.
Description of Work: We added on to our house with a second story bathroom, a walk in closet, a new HVAC system up there, and some other ancillary work connected to that, which was on the down floor and the basement. The primary work was constructing large dormers on the 2nd story. It was a brand new construction.
I was very pleased with the outcome of my project and I LOVE my new pantry. Brad Abell was very accessible when I called or emailed, and the work was done in a timely manner. All the sub-contractors' did quality work, and they were concerned about neatness and being respectful to me as the homeowner. I felt that Abell Contracting was a very reliable company, and I would definitely call them again for another project in my home.
Description of Work: Abell Contracting built a walk-in pantry closet in my kitchen utilizing space from the attached garage. This project included shelving, flooring, lighting and painting of the new pantry. Along with this, I had a new kitchen light fixture and under cabinet lighting installed, a custom-designed center island with granite top made, and then painting of the entire kitchen and hallway.

Work was performed from late Nov thru end of Jan. Due to the cold winter and snow, there were several days where it was just too cold to work with material. They did work on cold days and brought heater with them. Felt sorry for the installers as some days were quite windy (we sit up high) and cold. Hours worked per day was about what I expected and the timing to completion was not critical as it was winter and wasn't using the deck. Price was based on materials and labor, so time was not a factor in the cost. They need to come back when it is warmer to finish up a few things. Brad Abell was my main contact. He was responsive to phone and email (email most convenient). He explains in detail the work that will be done, but suggest as with any work you have done, be clear and get in writing what exactly they will do (haul away old material, hours, clean up, etc.). We did a walk through at the end and have a punch out list of a few items they need to wrap up. I trust Brad will be back to take care of it. They are not the least expensive guy in town, but I felt I got my money's worth. This was a big project for a deck that is 384 sqft and 10' off the ground, and a 225 sqft screened in porch.
Description of Work: Removed decking, joists and rails off old deck and replaced with new joists on 12" centers. Replaced decking and railing with AZEK material. Also, demoed screened in porch and replaced with new screen system and gorilla screen (very tough). Deck boards on porch replaced with AZEK as we're stairs and stair railing. Lastly, new frames installed for two screen doors and wrapped in AZEK.
After reading the reviews for Vincent Abell Contracting on Angie's List, I knew this was the contractor I could trust to maintain the integrity of my 87 year old home, notably the wood trim. Due to other jobs already in progress I had to wait several weeks for work to start. On the first day of the job, a young man arrived early, covered the openings to the rest of the house with plastic, made sure my hardwood floors were protected, worked late, and cleaned up all the debris before he left. He was here more often than any other worker and never failed to clean up at the end of the day. Most of the skilled professionals were top notch and all were courteous and polite. The carpenter's woodwork was exceptional and he went out of his way to make sure the new trim matched the old trim. Southern Kitchens supplied and installed the cabinets. General Manager, Brad Abell, answered most of my calls immediately, or, if unavailable, returned my calls in a timely manner. His motto was "We'll make it work" and they did. One thing I had read about Vincent is that he's good at solving problems. For 6 years I've watched the rain overflow my back porch gutter because the gutter company said it couldn't be fixed. Vincent took one look at it and knew what needed to be done! It was quite fixable. Also, because of another one of Vincent's unique skills (cannibalizing wood), he was able to salvage my original kitchen door and replace the old locks.
Description of Work: Complete kitchen remodel down to the studs. Installed new ceiling, electrical wiring & lighting, plumbing, new wood trim, and appliances. Enlarged opening between kitchen & dining room. Stripped wallpaper off dining room walls, painted both kitchen & dining room. Installed new back storm door & fixed gutter over storm door. Refurbished original wood kitchen back door & replaced locks.
Adapted readily to changes in project scope. No services provided as yet beyond initial scoping and budget.
Description of Work: Initial meeting to define project scope. Second meeting to discuss cost.

Vincent Abell and his workers made it a point to keep the house livable while the remodel was taking place. They protected the floors and rooms making sure to clean up each day. This was especially important to us. The answered our questions and worked with us to get the finished look we wanted. After the work was complete they came back to address issues with the installed doors. Overall we were very satisfied.

This was the second time we used Abell Contrating and their service was excellent. This was a complete kitchen remodel with the cabinetry supplied and installed by Southern Kitchens. We were guided through the process by Brad Able the project manager. He kept us informed of all project matters, when workers would come and what exactly they would be doing. Time lines were maintained, workers showed up when they were supposed to and several of them worked weekends to finish their part of the job. The quality of their work was excellent. All issues were handled professionally and the Abell team did all that we requested and beyond. We were completely satisifed with the end product.

This bathroom remodel took place in a historic 110 year old home and the room is somewhat large for a bathroom being approximately 12 x 13. Brad Abell worked with us regarding our supply and choice of fixtures and our own plan for the new bathroom and he was very helpful in providing suggestions for window choices, fixture choices and other essentials. As his father, Vincent Abell, said to me on the job once, that a bathroom remodel is one of those jobs that can be tough because it uses all of the trades: framers, dry wallers, plumbers, tile workers, carpenters, electricians, etc. As our old bathroom was taken down to the studs and then rebuilt, I saw those various teams and trades work their magic and they were all incredibly excellent! I do believe that Abell Contracting works with some of the very best of intelligent and skilled professionals who care about each and every job they do. We were notified of their start date and they arrived early each morning thereafter, never wasting their time or our time during this whole process which took about 4 weeks total. Brad Abell seems to have this managerial skill down to a science as each job or small part was completed he had the next trade arriving to start their part of the work! We seemed to witness magic happening before our very eyes as it all came together quite quickly and without a hitch! Whenever there was a slight issue, it was handled immediately, but there never were any big issues at all. We are just simply in awe of what this company was able to accomplish with just my plan drawn on graph paper...and in that amount of time! They listen and pay attention to what their customer wants and needs. They consistently go over and above what anyone else we have worked with has ever done. If there is one word that seems to exemplify and illustrate this company it is Quality. We will definitely use them again for other remodeling jobs at our home knowing that if it is done by Vincent Abell Contracting it will be done well and right and with respect and integrity. Thank you for everything and for our gorgeous new bathroom!

This was no simple project as the house is perched on a steep hillside. VAC had to dance around utilities and a septic leach field to do major excavating to pour large footers. The carpenters reminded me of sitting in geometry class. These guys were not your buck 99 run of the mill hammer in hand knuckleheads. They were skilled carpenters that took pride in their craft. The job site was kept very clean which was important to me as we have dogs and a 5 year old boy. We had one bump in the road with the bluestone floor install and VAC quickly took care of it and looks better than ever. Thank you Vincent Able Contracting.
Description of Work: This was the 4th project Vincent Abell Contracting has done for my family. Most recently they built a very large 2 story(in height) arts crafts / contemporary covered front porch with stone masonry a gorgeous bluestone floor.

Vincent was on site almost daily when work was being done. That impressed me when the owner is in the field with the workers and did a lot himself. All the workers were very professional and worked the whole time they were on site. They did a beautiful job in the sunroom. Brad was easy to get in touch with when I had questions, responded promptly. Always kept me informed of what was being done and explained things I didn't understand. Great experience and I will call them again if I need something else done or advice. They cleaned up the area as much as possible on a daily basis.
Description of Work: Built a beautiful sunroom addition, matched perfectly to the house. Also added a HVAC to our current upstairs. Fixed drainage issues in backyard. removed a big tree and hauled all away. had the electrical system upgraded.

It was a great experience - we will DEFINITELY use them in the future. We couldn't have picked a better contractor. We bought our house 1 year ago and it didn't have a first floor bathroom. We bought it knowing we would put one in soon after buying the house (the house was built in 1920). We knew exactly where we wanted the bathroom and knew we wanted to keep within the style of our house - we wanted the bathroom to look as if it was always there. My husband met with Brad Abell, Vincent's son and we got an estimate quickly. He came out twice and brought a plumber with him to make sure he gave us a solid price. We were happy with the price so we proceeded. Before long, construction began. The crew always kept everything clean, which was much appreciated since we have 2 little kids, one being 10 months and always putting things in his mouth. I was very impressed. Everyday it was so exciting to come from work to see the progress. It didn't take long, but we made our own delay, we needed a custom door to fit in with the rest of our house, and it took awhile to come in (at no fault of Abell Construction). Brad asked our input at every stage, so we knew exactly what was going on and where everything was going. There were no surprises. Their carpenter who did our trim was amazing! We have detailed old trim, and he matched it dead on with the rest of the trim in our house! My mom asked--"where did you found these people?!, they're amazing!" We love our new bathroom and will definitely make the call to Abell Construction for all of our future projects - no question. Mike and Jeana Koerber

Overall, the experience was extremely good. A few key points: 1. Collaboration: Vincent Abell was extremely good at trying to understand my overall vision for the project. I wanted to keep as much of the existing architectural details and focused on repair rather than replacement. Vincent Abell was highly collaborative and was willing to walk through the details and listen to my input. It was great collabortion. 2. Quality & Trust: I travel frequently and there was a lot of time I was out of town when key parts of the project were underway. I was 100% confident that the work was going to be done to a high quality. When I came back to town, the work was always extremely well done and met my expectations. 3. Responsiveness: The entire team was extremely responsive. As an example, on July 4th, there was a rainstorm and a vent was leaking. I called Vincent Abell and they had someone at my house to investigate the situation within 15 minutes. This was at 11 PM at night on a national holiday. Brad Abell was at my house within 30 minutes to personally assess the situation. 4. Cost Effective: I'm sure there are people that would have quoted a lower price than Vincent Abell. In fact, I got those binds. However, when the actuals come in, it would have been the same price. Vincent Abell doesn't "nickel and dime" you. They constantly give you cost options and try to figure out how to achieve the right result in the most cost-effective way. Through strong collaboration, they were able to help me achieve the results I wanted in the most cost-effective ways possible. 5. Professionalism; All of the people Vincent Abell engages are customer oriented and committed to quality. It was refreshing to have people show up on-time or even early that were ready to work. When you asked a question, you got an answer and there was a positve, "can do" attitude from everyone.
Description of Work: Vincent Abell did a two stage renovation of my home. They started with a complete renovation of the interior. This included new plumbing, electrical, plaster and carpentry. It was essentially a gut rehabilitation. All exisitng bathroom and kitchen were redone as well as the creation of two new bathrooms. After the inteior renovation, Vincent Abell has also done a complete renovation of the landscaping. This includes rebuilding a new deck as well as putting together and extensive hardscaping and water remediation plan.

They took longer to start the job than I expected. First they told me 5 weeks and then it went out on more like 6 months but they did a good job. I wanted it done before Thanksgiving so it would have been around just before Thanksgiving. They were very friendly, when I told them I couldn't do without a bathroom on Thanksgiving, they readjusted their schedule. They seem to hire, they subcontract just about everything but they seem to do a pretty good job. The problem with the job was that they got dust all over everything when they destroyed the old bathroom, they just went all over the house and he told me that was the problem, they said we haven't figured out how to prevent that. They used a subcontractor to do some painting in there and we rehired those people because we liked it, they did a good job and because we needed the backroom painted.

Thank you for your feedback. People ask regularly when I'm in the bidding process how long before we can start the work? At the time we bid this job we were approx. 5 weeks out, but I try to explain that our schedule changes daily. By the time we got this particular job our schedule was much busier, but we still finished by the Thanksgiving deadline. We use subcontractors for tasks like Plumbing and Electrical that require licensed contractors in their particular trade. We also believe the best craftsman are those that master their trade daily. This is why you will find our tile guy only does tile, our plumber is only a plumber, painters, etc. Residual dust is possible with any major demolition project but we manage it the best we can and clean up daily. We take great care in protecting people's home and belongings during the work; using plastic barriers, fans, drop clothes, etc. We cleaned the home with HEPA filter vacuums and dusted everything, leaving the house as clean or cleaner than it was before we came. - Brad Abell

Very pleased with the architect and the design presented. Also very pleased with the quote provided by the contractor based on the architect's design. Contractor was very professional and willing to work with me. The only reason we did not use this contractor was because we had a family friend in the building business that managed the job for a special price.

Dear Angie's List. I believe reviews should be reserved for those that entrust us to their remodeling projects. Dear Customer, I don't believe the D in punctuality is a fair assessment considering I called hours before our initial appointment stating I would not be able to pull away from a job. I set up a new date and time and showed up on time for the appointment. If something comes up and I'm not able to meet for an initial consultation I always call to reschedule.
I contacted the company via email with description of work I needed done. The owner responded the next day to inform me I may be better suited with a handyman company and they would not be able to see me until August.

Brad Abell was the main contact person. Quote was midrange, we got three. He was punctual with meeting with us to discuss quote. Telephone calls during the quote process returned within 1-3 days. Once work underway, phone calls returned usually same day. Brad also responded well to email and texting. The bathroom was demolished to the studs, including 2 1/2 days of removing 3-6 inches of concrete mortar. FYI Highlands residents, these old bathrooms were built to be bomb proof. A definite smash job, loud and noisy. We had some gravel trickle down through kitchen lights, even into the basement... beyond the control of the contractors. Un-nerving at times but no harm done. They used bagsters in the front yard that were removed the day demo finished. The carpenter was superb and matched the molding wonderfully. In addition, all the other subs were pleased, said his floor was very flat and sturdy. The electricians were prompt. The plumbers found previous builder's ventilation problems that they fixed. The drywall guy was good, although he spilled a bucket of mud on the driveway.... but Brad came and cleaned it up the next day. The tile guys were fantastic. Fine attention to detail. We had one problem with the wainscoting. Not a quality problem but it wasn't on the original quote... but we thought it was. We may or may not have told Brad we wanted wainscoting. That said, he quickly adjusted the quote and it was reasonable. In addition, because we had to order extra tile it slowed down the tiles guys, but they adjusted also... made it more technical for them, and they did great. There was a small, barely noticeable pattern mismatch on the floor, but no big deal.... Like a master carpet weaver who misses a knot. Makes a good conversation piece. There was one small problem with a towel rack a little loose, but is was fixed within two business days and we were not billed until everything was to our satisfaction. Would definitely use again. Brad and his crews are top notch and very professional. I almost don't want to write this review... don't want them too popular.... We need them to remodel our other bathroom, hopefully soon!

We purchased an older home in Louisville that we needed to gut the entire inside of the house. We went with Vincent Abell Contracting because they were affordable, had a positive track record, and when we met them they were very professional. Over the course of four months they transformed our house. As always in remodeling there were changes in our plans due to budget constraints or unexpected issues, they would always work with us and made sure we were comfortable with the decisions. They created a den, a bathroom, a closet, completely redid our kitchen, removed walls and added walls, and created our master bedroom. Additionally, they worked on our basement to make it more cost efficient for heating and cooling as well as installed a new HVAC system for our house since ours was no longer working. I couldn't be happier with the house, especially all the archways in the hallways they created. Our house was a challenge as we had limited space and considerable limitations with large concrete walls and working around additions that had been made over the years to the home before we purchased it. With a large project like this especially if you work full time you have concerns about not being around. But with Vincent Abell Contracting I did not worry about all of the workers being in my house without me. They were trustworthy and always respectful of our things. Additionally, we have several pets they had to work around while we were gone during the workweek. They were great with our dogs and cats (aka children). One of our dogs would escape (jumping out the window) and one of the workers (Carl) would retrieve her for us and bring her inside. They were great with the animals and always considerate, conscientious and respectful of us. I would highly recommend this company and will use them in the future if we ever need to remodel. Thank you for everything! Katie
