Description of Work: Needed a sub-floor replaced in a bathroom due to water leakage in a South Louisville rental we own. Said he only works in areas East of I65. I asked him if he only serviced rich areas, and he said that wasn't the case, that they worked out of Oldham County (ahem). Their offices on here says they are in the 40213 area code. Can't say what kind of work they do, but if you live in South Louisville - DO NOT CALL THESE PEOPLE, but my East End friends will hear this story. Guess it is best to FOLLOW THE MONEY.

Description of Work: We were doing a kitchen remodel, adding doors and windows. Abell came in and helped with the framing and drywall. They were very professional and knowledgeable. WE have an older house built in 1900 and they handled structural issues very well.

Description of Work: Garage - Replaced rotting soffit board, repaired repaired roof cupola, replaced 2 eave light fixtures, tore off an attached derelict greenhouse and put new aluminum siding where the greenhouse was, up to a second story height, prepped and painted trim. Added a gutter to one side of the garage. |Other - tore down an old shed-barn. Removed all debris. Removed a wall in the basement that had a piano 'trapped'. Good workmanship and communication. They have a machine that feeds a roll of sheet aluminum and folds and crimps it on-site to make lengths of siding, very impressive. A sub plumber put in a new kitchen faucet. Only problem: they installed the new garage gutter level with the earth. I pointed out this is incorrect; a gutter must to slope in pitch from the beginning of the run downhill to the downspout end. They re-attached it properly sloped.

Description of Work: I would use them again if I needed a major restoration like we did. We gutted the Kitchen and Bathroom down to the studs - plumbing, electric, the works. When we had any concerns or problems, Brad took care of it on a timely manor. Whether one of his team had to come over or someone that he contracted for electric or plumbing. He got it done. I found him to be honest, friendly and up front, very trust worthy. The price was the highest. But you get what you pay for and customer service is very important to us. They were also timely and stayed pretty much on the time frame they gave us.

We work hard to return all phone calls in a timely manner. Unfortunately, not everyone leaves clear precise messages. In this particular case the person called, and left a hurried message with a phone number but I was not able to make it out, even after listening to the message a dozen times. I'm sorry I did not return the call but I have to be able to clearly hear the message to make a return call. For anyone that may read this that decides to call and leave a message, please state your phone number slowly, two times. If you don't get a return call within 24 hrs there is probably a good chance the message did not come through so please try me again. Thanks - Brad Abell

Brad Abell promptly returned my call and came to give an estimate and was patient with my questions. The workers came timely, worked diligently, and were very nice. It appears they did a very good job, far better than the company that installed new siding.

All three of the Abell employees with whom we interacted were professional, polite, and attentive. When we do move forward with remodeling our bathroom it will be with Abell. They don't take credit cards so we're currently saving the money to cover the cost of the project. We are looking forward to working with them.

I looked up Abell Contracting on Angie's List and called to get a quote to install exhaust fans in both bathrooms in our home, which required routing the ducts through the attic and out the side of the house. They came to give me a quote the day I called and sent me an estimate by email shortly thereafter. They came on time, on the day the work was scheduled, were friendly, professional, knowledgeable and cleaned up their mess after they were finished (which is more than I can say for the last electrician who came in). The price was reasonable and they gave me a discount for being an Angie's List customer. I was extremely happy with the work and will definitely call them again.

Setup appointment to view the scope of the work and two representatives arrived on time at our home location. We explained our understanding of the work to be done and the problems we had had with the orginal contractor that did the work. We also explained that we were in time crunch to get the work done. We followed up with a detail task list and PDF of the smaill framing that needed to be redone in an email to the company (babell.vac@gmail.com). Their estimate was done within a few working days addressing all of our tasks and included another that they felt needed to be added based upon the home visit. The work is (as stated in Angie's List) warranted, insured and licensed - which is a great assurance Ultimately, we opted to utilize a different contractor.

They came out the same day that we called them. We emailed them the specifications of what we wanted done in writing and what our time frame was to do it. They emailed us back the same day and said that they would have a bid ready by the end of this week.
Description of Work: We contacted Vincent Abell Contracting to get a bid for remodeling work in both the kitchen and bathroom in a basement apartment.
I started out with a frantic need, my porch wall had popped apart during a heavy windstorm and there was almost nothing holding up a large section of my roof. They were able to get someone out to me within a few hours of my initial call, before a couple of other places I called had even responded, they were already en route. The contractor, Tim, was able to quickly shift the wall back into place and keep my roof from collapsing and discussed a couple options with me on how to permanently affix the framing to the masonry. After they averted what could have been an enormously expensive, destructive accident, I got to talking with Tim about some of the other projects around the house I had in mind. I discussed some of the minor roof leaks that I had noticed and he came back the following Monday to repair the flashing and end caps on the roof. He explained what he was doing and how he was shaping and caulking the metal to ensure the water was all diverted away from the joints in the metal roofing. He came back shortly after, with another worker, and they spent a day adding a gutter to the rear of my house and fixing up the siding and flashing on my barn. The gutter is good and solid, the downspouts have been directed right where I'm planning on having a drainage ditch put in. Working on the barn, they fixed missing flashing, enclosing some gaps that would allow water into the loft and re-attached some metal panels that had fallen off. While they were working on the barn, Tim talked me through several issues with the construction and a lot of options that I had to improve the strength of the loft and brace the ridgepole and roof. It was never a hard sell for more work, but he wanted to make sure I understood what the issues were and how it could reasonably be improved. I plan to take his advice and do a good bit of this work myself, but there are some other suggestions that I may have them come back to work on. Tim was also very helpful in discussing some options for a planned drainage ditch in the back of the house. I had fixed in my mind a complete a French drain, but he pointed out that the new gutters might make enough of a difference that I could go with a much simpler and cheaper drain system using catch boxes under the downspouts. After I can assess the effects after the next big rain, I definitely plan to have them back to do this work. They've been great to me. Quick responses, good work and a free sharing of knowledge without an aggressive sales pitch. I've already learned a lot and I plan on having them back out to work on several other small projects.
Description of Work: Repaired porch wall, re-positioned framing on top of masonry knee wall and fastened it down. Installed gutters on house. Fixed flashing and end caps on metal roof. Replaced flashing on metal pole barn, including some roof work. They also replaced loose metal siding and added screws to replace inadequate nails in the siding. Total of 3 days/28 man hours of work.

Our house has a unique design that includes many odd angles. Vincent Abell Contracting was the only company that brought in an architect who draw up a design. This company was a pleasure to work with. They always arrived on time and did what they said they would. They listened to our concerns and address them in a timely and satisfactory manner. We needed to be able to use our bedroom during the construction. This was manageable because the team with Vincent Abell Contracting was very professional and cleaned up after themselves. I have never seen a demolition performed so neatly. They arrived promptly every week day and we could trust them to work in the house when we were not home. When we made the decision to do this remodel I had many concerns about finding a contractor. I wondered if we would be able to find some one who was reliable, trustworthy, and able do a professional job. All these concerns were put to rest by Vincent Abell Contracting. As far as we are concerned we have found the contractor for all our future projects,
Description of Work: A small master bedroom and bathroom was expanded to include a walk- in closet by taking over an adjoining bedroom. This involved a complete demolition and remodeling of the bathroom. Another bedroom was also expanded into the surrounding attic space.
I contacted Vincent Abell Contracting when we found that we had a leak around our chimney. We also wanted our front porch pillars replaced -- they were rotting out, and thanks to some woodpeckers, we've had quite a menagerie living in them, including a family of owls. I've always preferred to work with companies that have their own names in the company title -- I believe that anyone who is truly proud of their work isn't afraid to put their name on the work that they do. I found the Abell company in an internet search, and called them. Our house is thirty-three years old, and is brick on the lower floor, and sheathed with classic vertical wallboard on the upper story. Although we've been diligent about keeping it painted, the vertical wallboard was beginning to rot from the bottom, where the water would eventually creep in. Brad, the Project Manager, and a recent college graduate with a degree in construction management, came out with his father, Vincent. They closely examined the house, and gave me the options that were available. This wasn't an easy job -- the areas requiring the new siding were in somewhat difficult locations, and on the back of the house were about sixty feet in the air, requiring the use of scaffolding. On the ends of the porch, and the scaffolding had to be set up around foundation plantings, including one yew that was as large as a small R.V. The pillars were also large, sixteen feet high and about twenty inches square, and as I mentioned before, beginning to rot. The option that we selected was to have new pillars custom built from a manufactured wood product. Not only was it guaranteed not to rot, it is mechanically stronger that to original wood pillars, and, while they don't carry a great deal of weight, the ARE load-bearing. I talked to two other contractors, but decided upon asking the Abells to do the work. They weren't the least expensive -- in fact, just the opposite, and I am notoriously tight (or thrifty, in my opinion) -- but I thought that the Abells presented the best options, and gave me the complete picture. They were excellent at providing samples of the proposed material, and, unlike the other two contractors, didn't try to 'steer' us toward or away from certain options. The just presented the case, and let us make up our minds. The work commenced, and the gentlemen that did the work were extremely skilled, and conscientious. Not only was I happy with the quality of the work, but the attention to detail was unusual, too, even the little things like policing the area for trash and cigarette butts before leaving for the day. There was never a question about when they'd arrive, either. Everyone with the company was scrupulous about calling ahead to alert me as to when to expect them. (I had requested this.) It may be a trifling thing, but as it was important to me, it seemed to make it important to them, too. The work was completed when they said it would be, and -- this was a first for me, and quite a pleasant surprise -- exactly for the estimated amount. We did a final walkaround with Brad after the job was completed, and (other than finding on small piece of siding under a bush) the job site was clean and tidy, and the work was first-rate. Here's a small detail that I believe is important. In the twelve years that we've lived in Kentucky, we've had a variety of contractors; roofers, asphalt, concrete, and other repair and remodel businesses. The Abells were the first, and I mean the FIRST, that never used any of MY tools. That is something that drives me crazy, and most especially when my tools are used without permission. There's a certain concrete contractor that will get a recommendation (let alone work) from me about the time that I'm named the next Pope because of doing just that. Not only did the Abells not need to 'borry' and of my tools, they took excellent care of their own -- something else that I tend to observe. And for those of you that think that this is a picky little detail, and are amused at my concern for tools, let me just say that this tendency may be testosterone-driven, but it is quite real. Asking to borrow another man's tools is like asking to dance with his wife, or to borrow his car. I'm entirely happy with the work, and in fact have asked them to come back for a smaller job. I'm delighted to have found them, and as the company seems to be multi-generational, I'm confident that they'll be around to handle the contracting needs at our house in the future.
Description of Work: Covered exterior wallboard with vinyl siding, and removed and replaced rotted pillars on front porch.
